- It just so happens that animals make friends only with their own kind or similar animals. Sure, there have been instances when a cat got along with a puppy. However, there have also been cases of completely unusual interactions, such that they’re even difficult to believe in. It’s actually very entertaining to watch how these animals try to communicate with each other, and it’s interesting to try and find the reason behind this relationship.

A easy way for people to differentiate them is to remember that monkeys have tails, and apes do not.

Thank you! Hearing the orangs referred to as monkees throughout the entire video (vs a once or twice mistake) made me both cringe & angry. These videos are seen by countless numbers of people and sadly, many of those viewers have limited or no access to "proper" education; what they see on the internet is taken as fact. But I also was afraid I'd come across as a nit-picking Karen for pointing out a mistake that, while pretty major for a fact-based article, if corrected wouldn't have affected the viewers' ultimate take-away. So thanks for picking that nit first, Karen. Hopefully the writers will check their facts better on any future videos. Love, Karen😘

Just a single minute talking to the caretaker, a main player, would have prevented this nonsense. But.., you know know-it-alls. I know know-it-alls, too. They co-opted someone else's work. No credit given other than "The Photographer." Contacting the source would have blown the project. 😳 Can't have that!

We are still far from knowning how much smart and sensitive animals really are.

My husband and I discuss this almost daily! We have a great responsibility to our Earth and her inhabitants, animal, plant and human! Our Earth will provide everything we need if we are wise enough to not destroy it! I truly believe that we will forever regret the destruction of our rainforests and the Amazon, we need to stop now! We have made great progress in replanting some of our forests, we need to continue while we continue to make sure we lose no more animals or plants to extinction. ❤
Orangutans are not monkeys, they are Great Apes. They do not have paws, they have hands. They are very complex, similar to us. I am glad that they finally have other company, I can imagine how lonely it would have been for them. Thank you for the vid.

I can't help but feel very sorry for captured animals. I'm glad that these two groups have given each other some company.
theyre typically "captured" because theyre injured in a way where they are going to die. so they save them, but then they cant be released back into the wild and survive on their own. At least thats how ethical zoos work.
they are not 'captured', probably conservation zoo bred in order to keep certain species from going extinct by ruthless humans in their home countries. The old concept of 'zoos' is a thing of the past. Its now all about conservation. There are still some people who have had the old concepts indoctrinated into them at school etc.

Putting the Orangatans together with the otters was genius! Also putting other species together is a great idea. Animals are smarter than we give them credit for.

What an excellent idea. Animals in the wild don't live in isolation from each other, though the unique circumstances of being in a zoo has allowed this interaction to blossom into mutual friendship. Well done to this innovative keeper👏

These beautiful creatures deserve so much better than what humans have given. I could watch them all day long and never get bored. They are absolutely magical!
I am an animal lover to begin with but the Orangutan is up in my top 5 and has been for decades. There was, at one time (He is probably "gone" by now) an Orangutan at the Milwaukee Zoo that LOVED to interact with the visitors MUCH more than others. He would "preform" by doing rolls, jumping on the tire swing and just act like a clown, periodically stopping to laugh boisterously and applaud himself. He would do this for a few minutes then he would end the performance with his signature move. There were a few different ways he would do it, but my favorite was he would turn his back to the glass, bend over and look at the people them laugh in that position while he flipped you off! EVERYONE would just die laughing which made him even happier!!

Sorry but your information is incorrect…. Those otters were there long before the pandemic and has nothing to do with loneliness. Pairi Daiza is a very animal friendly zoo where they have a lot of space and distraction. The zoo is not even open all year around just to protect the animals from too much stress. They were never bored…. Let alone dying from loneliness. This zoo invests a lot into the welfare for the animals.

You should come and have a visit and you’ll see with your own eyes. This video is fake… go to the website of pairi daiza and you’ll see how much effort they do to save these animals. There natural habitats get destroyed for the palm industry so you can wash your hair! So don’t judge….

It’s a fictional story.
Another key difference to note between the orangutans' interactions with the otters vs. human park visitors, is that they're able to actually touch and play with their new friends, rather than being separated by glass, only able to look.
I love how the young'ins run off to play, while the "adults" chat, just like humans often do!
I agree, unfortunately you can't trust humans to play nice with anything.
Orangutans are very, very social animals and need a community. They are not meant to be kept in the isolation of zoos. Im so sad about captive animals. Especially those who are healthy enough to thrive in the wild but were captured very young and cant be released because they adapted to captivity. I mean its understandable if the animals have health concerns that prevent their release, but most zoos have very unethical practices pf buying young animals that otherwise could've been rehabilitated and released.
@@stass2933 Don't be sad about captive animals because they are safer with humans. Animals are hunted in the wild and forests are becoming few. So where would they go? They are safe with us.
@@Simplythetruthfulone: If wild animals are kept in captivity then they should have plenty of land to move around on, and not be used to do tricks in a circus. Many lions, tigers and beers have been abused by circus ppl, and it's wrong to do that to a wild animal. I've seen videos of circus ppl putting wild animals like a bear or lion in small cages for years on end and that's Animal abuse, and it's why we have rescuers take them away from circus ppl and put them on wild life reservations. And often times these wild animals need dental work done on their teeth because the circus ppl neglected them, and it hurts them to eat food.

But also be wary of imposing 2020s rich (despite current economic tensions) western societies values on more close to the edge of surviving cultures. Predators and Omnivores make connections also. Just go hug a Shark, Grizzly Bear, Lion, Tiger or Crocodile the next time you see one to get that "connection & Love" in you desire. The first, famous kitten of KOKO’s, she named “All-Ball”, bc the kitten was a Manx mix, a rumpy. She was quite happy with A-B, an I don’t blame her a bit!

The San Diego Zoo has orangutans and siamangs in the same enclosure as they share the same habitat in the wild. Their interactions are heartwarming and very funny most of the time. Siamangs can be rather naughty toward the orangutans and it's always fun to see what they get up to.
Animals have feelings just like people do. They need interaction with others, be it people or animals. Loosing the interaction that they are used too can make them lonely and depressed. They need some kind of stimulus to keep them happy. What this zoo did was genius. They created an environment that helped many different animals. Well done!

I have 3 cats. They keep me sane. Having weird little creatures sharing my living space is entertaining and comforting. We have nothing in common but mutual existence and it works well. They do cat stuff, I do human stuff, everyone's happy.

@@erickpoorbaugh6728 maybe his language origin is from a non english country. Im german and monkey and ape both translate to "Affe" so we make no difference there and call both the same. There is another word "Menschenaffe" wich literally means humanmonkey and/or humanape, but this is rarely used by anyone. Most just say "Affe" to any ape and monkey that isnt a Gorilla.

Otters are quite the playful things we had some in the crick next to us and I'd watch them play for hours floating and sliding down the bank it was so cool how they float on their backs with their hands crossed just chilling 😁👍🏼
The main problem with keeping animals in zoos is mental stimulation, keeping them from being bored and in the case of more intelligent animals like apes & elephants providing fun is so important. The keepers here have created an interesting & fun environment for the animals to ENJOY.
Why keep them in a zoom though, they must be taken back to their natural habitat.
@@TafaraBwerinofa Without zoos many animals would be extinct. Ideally, yes no zoos and all animals in the wild, safe & free. If you think that is possible I bet you believe in world peace too. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Best we can hope for are zoos that carry out serious research in animals conservation and treat the animals in their care well.

We can trust zoos yes, but I am more in support of game parks, at least animals have the freedom to roam about in their natural habitat. Tourism still exists but animals are not in cages.
@@TafaraBwerinofa No money, no research. Game parks are few and far between. I would think zoos play a far greater role in conservation then game reserves. Very few tourist can see and hence pay to see animals in a game reserve, unless you are a millionaire. The worlds is not perfect.
@@TafaraBwerinofa The world has become a lot better for those animals that still survive. I have seen some disgraceful zoos but less and less now, thankfully. Have you ever seen Australia (Park) Zoo in Queensland. The enclosures are massive and you really need to be fit to walk it. Its why they have a train system. The enclosures are wonderfully designed, not as good as nature but close and nature does not have a medical plan.

This is my favorite kind of story, love developing between two different species. I think it happens a lot more than we realize, but it shows how animals aren't all instinct, how they have big beating hearts just like us.
I, being human, have a very best friend who happens to be a cat. It's not that unusual, two species hanging out and loving life together. The more pals, the better, I'd say. 👍

A companion makes a world of difference to any truly lonely person, it doesn't just apply to great apes and monkeys, that's for sure.
kudos to all involved in recognizing and attending to this major jump in animal husbandry.

The solution to the problem would be to get the orangutans out of cages and set them free.
Zoos should be banned.

Humans have destroyed their natural habitat, so we breed them in captivity hoping that one day all captive animals will find a safe living space in the wild.
The ideal would be to have sufficiently large nature reserves, but for political or financial reasons this is generally not possible.
Zoos raise money to care for animals, and make the public care about their welfare.
On the other hand, we must boycott parks like Marineland which imprison marine animals such as killer whales in small basins when they need to swim hundreds of kilometres.

I always thought I would be fine with my own company forever, as long as I had my stuff to work with (making my music and writing). but there are even limits to the most crazy homebodies of us, it seems.
I casually slipped into just not talking or doing anything with anyone for a long while and became quite literally insane. It's like your balance and reward centers get out of wack.
... started constantly stuffing my face with extremely unhealthy foods such as icing, sticks of butter, brown sugar, and vanilla extract all mixed and put in warm soft wheat tortillas for every meal... laying down in bed all day watching Star Trek... getting pissed, cursing to myself out loud when I had to do tiny things likie brush my teeth or go to the grocery... my muscles just melted away and I started to look like Gollum.

Kudos to Methew for doing this, it is done in the Zoo in Hamburg for many years. And there the otters try to tease the Orangutans quite often and sometimes have to be locked away ;-)
In my hometown in a small zoo, a lonely orangutan was given a kitten. It was love at first sight. His keeper write a childrens book about the friendship.
Baby Orangutan: "Can we get a cat?"
Adult Orangutan: "ask your father"
Baby Orangutan: "PUPPIES!!!"

Having ferrets, which are in the same family as otters, they are the most inquisitive little creatures I have ever encountered. They are extremely social and I think more curious than cats. I have to guess that otters are very similar with their social skills and quirky curious minds. What a great idea! Brought joy to all of their lives. I love the thought of the otters being able to swim from their enclosure to the orangutans. You can get even more creative with it. The more they can explore the happier they will be. My ferrets are free range. The thought of caging them would be like keeping a cat in a cage. It would break their little souls.
i miss my ferret Pest he was buddy! before he died got real sick turned yellow then got healthy again about 4 months later he passed away...then there was baja my albino one i got from friends mom... she loved being held and sitting on laps

Hello everyone...I subscribe to several Otter channels on UA-cam. They were very interesting and entertaining. I can imagine they were a good addition to the Primate exhibit.

I had a South American Redfoot Tortoise named Studebaker for almost 40 years. One year, during a really bad winter a black cat started hanging out in a basement window well. I started putting food and water out for her. One day she came in and made it clear I was going to be her human. I kept Studebaker in my kitchen. She was paper trained and hand fed. When Motor City Kitty first saw Studebaker she didn't know how to react. Over time they became best friends to the point where they slept together. Inter-species friendships can happen, all we need to do is keep out of the way and let it happen.

Social life is equally important to human beings also. The elderly should also be kept engaged in the interests of their mental.health.

Elderly in facilities are already form very close attachments to staff, and likewise. We become a substitute family. We were there for them during the COVID struggle. They saw how hard and shirt staffed we worked, but we still comforted them anyway we could. As soon as possible we had family visits through patio fences, throw plexiglass, then together with masks.
As our governments lock us down knowing a social life is important for our health, think about it.

Otters are very friendly - I personally watched them play tag at an Indiana, USA zoo with a 5 year old boy. He was running alongside the aquarium glass wall, switching directions as fast as he could, while the otters swam underwater inside the glass aquarium, matching his speed and direction with ease. Every time he switched direction to try to lose his "tail" and the otter instantly flipped over and reversed direction too, the boy would shout with glee.
I also knew a native american Ojibwe medicine woman & grandmother, who tells of playing with a wild otter family as a very young girl. She was watching the otters play on a mud slide into the creek, and it looked like such fun that the girl could not resist taking a turn on the mudslide herself. This startled the whole otter family, but the adults came and circled her swimming and sniffing her while she froze, and eventually they touched her showing trust and friendship. The girl began visiting the otters daily, sharing her lunch with them. One day she had the bright idea to invite the otters to come and visit her home for a tea party, and she enticed the whole otter family to follow her home, where she fed them bits of cooked fish on her tiny tea party saucers at a short tree stump/ table just their size. A great time was had by all, and her parents were amazed, because when she previously told them about her adventures with the otters, they thought she just had vivid imaginary friends. The human family moved away shortly afterward, as it was time for the young girl to go to school and there wasn't one nearby.
This was not the first time Grandmother made friends with local wildlife; she got her childhood name "walks with bears" when she was just beginning to walk; a bear family stopped by the wilderness clearing where her family lived, and the cubs played with her, and she was steadying herself while walking by gripping the bear cub's coats as they walked beside her under mama bear's watchful eyes. When Grandmother's mama saw this, it scared her half to death; she feared what a normally over-protective mama bear could do to her bold daughter gripping the cubs, but the mama bear was very patient and caring to this tiny, hairless cub of a different species. The bears left after the grown humans showed up.
Otters can be killers

It is terrible. There is no right way to do a wrong thing. Animals should be in their natural environment - not in enclosures.
whatever makes you feel better about zoos but you know deep down they are there purely for the entertainment of humans. Yes they care but only to a point and only whilst profitable.

What a wonderful story of friendship to see. I’m just glad the Orang-utans have found friends through this pandemic. I could imagine their how they felt. I lost my mum in March this year, my heart breaks every day, I really miss her. Being alone is no fun.
So sorry for your loss, completely understand, it hasn’t been long for you to be without her. Do you have friends? Pandemic doesn’t help matters. Other family members? Your pain will change, cherish the good memories.

My mum had bowel cancer & chemo, then twenty years later suffered with bladder cancer & shingles + mum had a Urinary Tract infection, I didn’t know; if gone undetected can affect your heart & brain. Mum’s went to her brain. So now she is at peace. It will always hurt, sometimes more than other times. My friends & family do support me, but as they say, “you can have a hundred people around you & still feel alone”. It’s just hard knowing both our parents are dead. I will always miss them. Thank you for your kind words.

I love the friendliness between the Otters and Orangutans, it just seems so natural, its just beautiful to see.
Chimpanzee would probably eat the otters a.s first like they do with other animals.
Both species are ridiculously intelligent.
I used to live on a boat and this group of 3 otters used to hang around, I'd give them the occasional treat but mostly they just seemed to want to socialize and show off and do acrobatics in the water, then they began leaving "gifts" exactly as some cats do, fish heads, pieces of crab, etc. They are amazing creatures.
Me: "Oh wow. I would love to see video of Orangutans actually playing with Otters!"

Humans literally invented the idea of pets, what can we learn exactly?
Before domestication was probably co-habitation in the animal kingdom, where animals sees one another as necessity for security, shelter, or food source (indirectly).
For instance burrows made by moles and such animals may be used as shelter by other small animals. Small animals may seek security from larger animals that does not prey on them (like Rhinos and Birds or Rabbits).

My b-i-l, Randy, was like that at the Atlanta Zoo before it was Zoo Atlanta. During the era when the cheetahs were fat and the enclosures were no bigger than a whirlpool tub with a little window about 7’ up. He put dirt, logs, and plants in them and made a shelf on the window. Then he began working with Coca, the elephant donated by, you guessed it, the Coca-Cola Company! He taught her tricks, got her walking around a little (her pads were a little damaged from having only to the end of the chain for walking). The people and animals LOVED the change, and the Safari lands in zoos took off!❤️

I find it strange that different species were "discovered" to be able to live and play together. Anyone that has ever had a farm or ranch knows this. I have dogs playing with goats. When we had cows, the goats would often come to them and play and they would try to headbutt each other. We would give cracked corn in a 50 gallon barrel that had been cut in half length-wise so they would come when we called them. One of the goats got smart and she would lie in the barrel and eat to her heart's content. The cows would try to get her out with their horns but could not as she laid real low. The cows would start bellowing their displeasure. :D The cows would even play with our dogs. And of course, many of them wanted to be with us or play with us. Elsie, one of cows, would run over to my wife for her to scratch her neck. Some of the goats would jump on us. Many of the animals wanted little "snacks" that we had for them and would try to sniff our pockets and nudge us for them.

When I used to help out at the stable when I was a kid, we also had a few cows, maybe 20 head tops. They learnt to recognise my hi vis, because I always had a few scraps in my pocket. Of course, that meant that when someone else borrowed the jacket, the cows harassed them too 😁
They probably just made the video for people that don't know better. This guy doesn't even pronounce their name correctly so he's not so smart.
