The folks at Mind’s Vision sent me a digital copy of this game and I reviewed it a couple months ago. I felt like it really learned a lot of the lessons of Ironsworn in its design. The folks at Minds Vision are very engaged with the community and put out great stuff. Very happy that I got a chance to play this game.
I'd interpret the 20% change of a Great Old One appearing as not directly attacking your shelter but walking in the general vicinity and any effects are unintentional. A kaiju-sized one may cause some structural damage that night. What could escalate this is that the GOO either A) has a procession of followers, B) sheds parasites/spawn/spores, or C) warps the area creating or gating life in. Now the player has to grab supplies and either run for it or patch up their shelter best they can for the minion attack.
Great video and review! As a long time player of Legacy of Cthulhu (Herança de Cthulhu, in portuguese) I can attest that the game is amazing at what it offers: a rules-light post-apocalypse survival game. I've played it many times solo, a few time cooperative and I've even run a quick game as GM and the game ran flawlessly. Plus, it can be used as a scenario generator for any post-apocalyptic game, specialy a lovecraftian one, such as "Cthulhu End Times" for Call of Cthulhu or "Cthulhu Apocalypse" for Trail of Cthulhu (wich I used it for). If you're not into Lovecraft, it could be run as any post-apocalyptic setting (just humans, zombies, aliens, mutants...) with little changes. Oh, and the portuguese character sheet has a more intuitive oganization, I honestly don't know why they changed it. I own all of their games, but I have played only Vampire deeply. It is as good as Legacy of Cthulhu, just way more social since the world is still going on.
Yep, and now I have another RPG to buy. I personally like rules lite systems. Since I tend to have players that are new to RPGs, rules lite systems are easier to teach and are less intimidating to new players. Plus, they let you get to what is most important in RPGs, and that's playing the game. I've been running a rules lite cyberpunk game and a rules lite horror game for 3 years now with no problems at all. But I'll definitely be picking this up and keeping my eye out for their other books, especially the witch and vampire books. I really liked WOD, but always found the system a bit... much... especially when it came to combat. I love rolling dice as much as any gamer, but after a while that's just too many D10s to keep rolling over and over again. And another nice aspect of rules lite systems... they are easy to modify and change to get the exact feel you like in your games with little effort or worry that you'll break the system in the long run.
This TT RPG is amazing I played it with my family and solo. We had a great time. I am a complete TT RPG beginner the system is simple and the tables are amazing. Great buy.
It sounds very enticing. I play IronSworn where there seems to be some cross-over in the mechanics so it might be fun to adapt this setting and some of it's play into my ongoing game. My only qualm is PDF. I prefer physical books and printing over 20 pages at home or with a service is quite prohibitive.
I've been hearing about this recently since I've been looking for a horror- themed solo game. It sounds interesting but what is a bit unclear to me is whether it's possible to really build a campaign with an evolving story, recurring NPCs, etc, or if it's just a series of mini "adventures" each with their own objective and a "win" condition. Looking at the free sample rules it seems more like the latter, or even a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book, but I'm still reading. I understand that the lethality of the system means a long campaign is unlikely but I'm more interested in an evolving story than a series of one shots, so I'm not sure if this is for me.
Are there rules for dealing with other shelters as allies (with trading and such, perhaps for help)? I had an idea where an allied shelter needs help dealing with a ghost or zombie horde. They made have been folded in there and I missed them.

I'm glad to see a Brazilian game being reviewed by you. 🎉🎉🎉

If these folks try to fill the niche that White Wolf/World of Darkness abandoned with their 5th edition, they are simply getting all my money!
Forgive my ignorance what niche did wod leave with fifth edition?
@@Darkestdarkifyhe is talking about "The Vampire" and 5th edition is hippster sheit with BS.

Like Brazilian player, im happy about your review one of my favorite author's in the scenario of RPG in Brazil! Thanks for that man...
Cool option for horror post apocalyptic game Dave! Thank you very much for the review!
Nice review! I wouldn't have known about this game otherwise. I like the completeness and "chaosity" of it 🙂
So referring to zombie games there was one game I played and I think I have a book. It was called all flesh must be eaten.
Excellent, two new games for the library. Looking forward to the eventual hardbacks. Thank you muchly for the review.

This sounds pretty cool, I'd like to try it solo :)
Could you review the Vampire one? I've been trying to get into some solo TTRPGS and am wondering about a simpler VtM, ruleslite game.
He has reviewed World of Darkness and Masqurade in the past but I dont think he mentioned a solo mode
He is talking about Vampire Alone in the Dark, which is made by the same company and uses the same system as this Cthulhu game. @ejsmith7626

Sold.
Very interesting game
I'll definitely check out the Vampire game because VTM is too "theater" for me.
I'd love to see an in-depth review of the *CTHULHU AWAKENS RPG* from Green Ronin.

Oh, if they're doing WoD, I hope they do Hunter...
Iä! Iä! My friends
It sounds like a drastically simplified version of Apocthulhu.
This is ironic just put together a ruleset that does all this and more
"Dead Simple RPG" made it sound like it was out of business, not that it was "dead simple" haha
