The starter set is the free taste of dope from the dealer to get you hooked, I can speak from experience. I haven’t even finished running all the starter scenarios and I’ve already ordered the Keeper book. Great review, great channel!
Very good overview. You really explain the mechanics well. I prefer Delta Green's streamlining and setting myself, but still beautiful books and a great game.
I haven't played Call of Cthulhu since the 1st edition (still have my box...) Your review has encouraged me to revisit an rpg of my childhood. Thank you for that!
All your reviews give a great overview. Also give a great view into the flavor of the setting and the game mechanics. Only wish I have is that you keep making these videos. I have all notifications on maybe 1-2% of the channels I follow. Yours is one of them. I could have posted this on pretty much any of the 10 reviews I have seen so far. They are all great! Now I want to buy even more TTRPG rule books. :)
Having only ever heard of CoC from friends in my youth, and never having seen the actual game due to a lack of a good game store in our area at the time, now that I’ve found the game I’m really loving it. However, given the system, it seems to me they really over-complicated the combat rules. It’s almost a social engineering thing. “Don’t fight lest ye surely die.” Okay, I won’t; far too damned complicated. It’s really a downer that such an integral part of any TTRPG system has to be essentially homebrewed or borrowed from another game system.
This video makes me want to buy products from several companies heretofore unknown to my online shopping history. It makes me want to visit those retailers repeatedly and make large purchases, and I want to return to this video for the foreseeable future in order to find out what to buy next.
Idk, I just can't get into this game. Watching this shows me how my DM is messing up and screwing us out of mechanics, but even with all this explanation, I just don't care about this. There's no fun when you don't get more than 1/5 chance to even drive a fucking car.
Nice review. I have to say, while I do appreciate the aesthetics of the Cthulu mythos, I have a real problem with the underlying premise. Especially the parts dealing with sanity and gaining knowledge. because, you know, gaining knowledge about something removes its mystique and making it less scary, not more. The whole notion of 'forbidden knowledge' is just ridiculous to me. Also, the unknown isn't scary, it might be exciting, or even annoying but it isn't scary. I guess what I'd like to see is a game that's like this but without any of the Hollywood style insanity BS in it.
idk, I don’t agree. the more you learn about these horrors the more that it sets in on what you’re reading may actually be real, and that sounds pretty terrifying to me
Take a walk in the dark at night.. In a forest maybe.. Or an empty farm.. Walk off the beaten path in a mountain area.. Preferably at night.. Enter an asylum that's been abandoned for years.. You see that fear you feel? those shivers down your spine? your constant looking back behind you? Sweet hubristic soul, when you're faced with true unknowns your mind will never have the capacity to even consider silly emotions like excitement or annoyance. Or you'll think about is running, and or you'll be able to do is freeze in fear. and knowledge won't save you. knowledge will condemn you. for through it, you'll only confirm that what you're witnessing is no smoke and mirrors. Although you'll wish it was.
This game has some of the worst firearms rules I have ever seen in any game, I understand combat is not supposed to be a huge part of the game but it would be nice if the firearms rules made sense or were based even a little bit in real world physics.
@@whiskeyvictor5703 Lets start with the Handguns multiple shots rule (KH pg.113) it says that handguns can fire 1,2 or 3 shots per round but will do so with a penalty die for each shot if more than 1 shot is fired. First of all every firearm can quickly fire follow up shots sometimes with a loss in accuracy sometimes not, this is not exclusive to handguns so this rule should apply to all firearms, even bolt actions, secondly the penalty die should only apply to the follow up shots it should not apply to the first shot regardless of how many rounds are fired and lets be honest depending how long you make your combat rounds (we do 20 seconds in our games) you can fire more or less shots, it really depends on the firearm and what it is capable of; which brings me to my biggest complaint the full auto rules, the speed at which a full auto weapon fires at has nothing to do with the skill of the shooter and everything to do with the weapon itself but because they did not bother to do any research on firearms and just made them all generic they had to come up with a rule that just makes no sense. In my game I fixed all the weapons and rewrote all their stats so that the rate of fire of the weapon determines the number of rounds that can be fired in a combat round not the shooters skill, the shooters skill does help to determine how many of the rounds fired hits but not how many they can fire. My players and myself are all big gun guys in real life so we needed rules that made sense so re-writing all the weapons was the best thing to do, it didn't take that long and now we have firearms rules that make sense and we are all happy with. There are a number of other things I could go into more detail about but it would take a long time and too much space but I have fixed all the problems to the satisfaction of my players which was what they demanded before they would even consider playing Call of Cthulhu and now everyone in my gaming group is happy.
@@douglasrood2650 Thanks, Doug! Being unsure about whether or not to get into CoC is in part about the confusion caused by multiple editions being available, and their respective differences.

This is one of the best, most condensed yet still complete reviews of 7th. Loved it!
Thanks!

Wow, glad to have done something that cool. I hope your rediscovery experience is a good one!
This video is fantastic! How does this channel not have more views?
Thanks! And I have no idea!
