I personally prefer 2049, just because it hit me on a more personal level. But I’m not going to argue with anyone who prefers the original, since it’s also so amazing on its own right.
'2049'. I watched the Director's Cut of the Original and '2049' back to back for my first watches, and I felt so out of the original. Whereas '2049' was like watching something I'd dreamed of before my eyes, and I finally felt like I "got" the world
2049 is my 4th favorite movie of all time. Watching it reminds me in every possible way why I love cinema. A technical masterpiece interwoven with deep rich themes and a bittersweet mix of loneliness and despair complimented with hope and beauty.
Only your 4th? What's your favorite? Joker? Taxi Driver? Revenge of The Sith? I can't choose a favorite. I have a half a dozen favorite movies. There is no 2nd, 3rd, or 4th favorite movie for me
This film is a true masterpiece and it’s all the more impressive because it was a reboot sequel to a ~35 year old bonafide classic. Truly an incredible feat.
Hey there! Nothing to add, nothing to plug - just want to say: THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE If 2023 is to be my last year of doing this, I want to go out as spectacularly as possible, and this BLADE RUNNER video is just the start. Y'all have no idea what you're in for over the next few months, and if you don't wanna miss any of it, well... you know what to do. [S U B S C R I B E]. It's as easy as that. Oh wait, I guess I just both added and plugged. Oh well. Keep that heart open and flowing, and I'll see you all again with another WHY I LOVE video in April ❤
I come here... leave a like (to help the algortithm), leave a comment (to help the algorithm) and leave UA-cam, because I haven't seen 2049 (so I'm gonna watch the movie to watch the video because this channel is pure gold).
Watch the original 1982 film first. You can watch 2049 on its own and still get everything essential, it can stand alone. But seeing the original will enhance the experience.
Are we just not gonna bring up the fact this mans editing is so on point, like he literally dose the most whiling doing so little, adding touches of glitched in texts popping up, and the certain filter usage (not that other UA-camrs haven’t) but this was to really nail in to what needed to be said, and even the small connection to Loverboy saying how K wanted to find love with Deckard but instead luv found K then cuts to that explosion, 😮💨😮💨 some stuff right there just rewatched blade runner yesterday and just watched this, i feel connected with someone ❤
Bailey, all your video essays are great, but this is definitely the greatest yet! The philosophical and ethical issues were very deftly handled and all your thoughts were expressed in an incredibly beautiful way. You should absolutely be proud of yourself for this one!
I remember first watching this movie when it came out with my friends one day after we got out of high school. We were all hyped to go had the tickets arrived to the theater and walked in. To all of our amazement the theater was empty no body was there to watch it. Maybe we got there really early? Nope. As the movie started we were the only ones in the theater and it was amazing. Both the movie and the experience of enjoying it alone with friends added to the atmosphere. I have never experienced a movie like this before. I had never experienced a movie theater empty. This made the movie that much more special turning it into a core memory. And I’m so glad this movie is finally getting the recognition it deserves as well as Ryan gosling I feel so many people sleep on his acting abilities. Definitely one of my favorite movies ever and one of my first literally me characters too lol
Joining the people that are leaving likes and comments for the algorithm but not watching the video yet because I haven't seen 2049, though I'm very excited to do so and circle back round to this video eventually!
This movie is THAT movie for me where before I sat down in theaters and was absorbed by this film I loved movies but I didn’t love the art of film. I saw the trailer for this and was blown away by the way it looked I could just feel something was different so I made my dad show me Ridley’s Blade Runner and I thought it was cool but it went pretty over my head, then I sat down in seat G14 to watch 2049 and at the very second of that opening image until the very last cut I was in a trance - I could just tell this film was different then the ones I was watching, there was thought behind ever shot, light, cut, prop, cue of music, etc. I watched it 5 times in theaters and now I’m junior studying film and this movie is a big reason for that. Villeneuve + Deakins = powers god himself can’t fathom
This is awesome, seeing someone fall in love with the art of film making because of one my favorite films of all time. This movie is a love letter to our collective human soul, for the desire of connection and to feel real and whole.
Lucky are those whose consciousness is elevated enough to be conscious of the matter this movie, and your commentary, is made of. Thank you for making me feel a little elevated in your light.
That was so beautifully done. I don’t think anyone else could explain it any other way? You just made me love Blade Runner 2049 even more now and I’m sure dissecting this movie wasn’t easy so thank you again and have a pleasant day. 👍😉
Oh my God, this video is amazing. This is one of the best video essays on 2049 that I've seen. You literally made me cry, especially when you talked about what real love is in the "Just Your Average Joe" segment. Real love has to be authentic, with all the ups and downs. If it is just validation seeking, then you are not accpeting or even ackowledging the other person with all of their flaws and all of their goodness. Fake love is Joe's relationship with Joi. She was merely a projection of what Joe wanted her to be, and nothing more. Real love constitutes allowing the other person to be who they are, and making sacrifices on your part for the sake of the relationship.
This is beautiful bro. 2049 is my favourite movie of all time, yet I've always struggled to figure out why and how to explain it to someone else, you explained it so well, thank you for making this. Like K, we all think we're special but in reality we aren't.
This was such an excellent analysis. When I first watched the movie, I was amazed at how the film spoke to me. This movie captures the truth of loneliness in a way I haven’t seen in many other films.
What a video... Your videos make me feel the emotions the film instilled in me, and that is phenomenal. I'm gonna rewatch this movie now with a whole new perspective.
This is the best essay on Blade Runner 2049 I have come across. I am an older woman who at 10 fell in love with serious sci-fi reading Clarke, Asimov, Bradbury, Simak and Huxley. I saw Kubrick’s 2001 on Opening night - which gives you an idea of how old I am. And yes I saw the original in the theatre and a directors cut in 1994. I loved it. Of course the most compelling character in that film is Roy Batty and his eloquent Tears in Rain speech. However, 2049 is another level entirely. I went to see it and was so mesmerized by it, I saw it again at my local theatre the next day. I own the DVD’s of both. 2049 is my favorite and on my best 5 movies of all time and I have seen many movies over the years. Your video encapsulates what I felt watching it. Gosling’s performance - what he can do with just his eyes to convey feeling is first rate. A three time Oscar nominee, he should have been nominated for this role also. The direction and Deakin’s cinematography was so beautiful - I remember saying to myself if he doesn’t win the Oscar for this film after 13 nominations, there is something seriously wrong with Hollywood. And of course, he did. This movie is a soul-searching, wrenching absolute masterpiece. And like the first will just gain in stature as the years pass. Thank you so much for your insightful take. I have subscribed I was so impressed.
This hits so many themes I’ve felt but never quite able to articulate watching this movie. This could’ve been an hour long or even a series but it was all masterfully analyzed. I can’t wait to watch this movie again but with new perspective. Thank you!👊🏽
Man, you just GET it. (Blade Runner 2049 is my fav movie of all time) great job! not only on this one but on all your essays. I really wanna see your take on Elden Ring.
Considering what you said at the end of the video about Purpose and how it drives human existence and the experience of it, I would love to see you do a video on The Matrix, a lot of Agent Smiths character arc touches on very similar themes and I would love to hear your take on it. Great video!
This video should been titled “why I love bladerunner 2049 and you should too” because the movie is such an under appreciated movie. Sure it did earn some money at the box office but nobody really appreciated it or talked about it enough. It’s my favorite movie of all time and it’s just a beautiful film visually and with its themes that I still think about and watch videos analyzing the film. Theres so much to this movie and i personally believe it’s 10/10. It does everything right and delivers a great story, respecting its characters from the previous film while also creating a new story that’s so intriguing and impactful.
I had to watch Blade Runner a million times in high school when studying some unit on dystopian futures, it was one of those movies I’ve always known is super culturally significant but has always just been there, it’s hard to feel the same emotional connection to something you’ve had to write essay after essay on. But 2049 is something else - I’m so glad I got to experience it the way I did on the big screen, knowing I was watching something that was important, and I’m so stoked it gets discussed and analysed to this level today. Box office results are arbitrary for movies on this artistic level, they impact the industry around it regardless.
Congrats on another great one. When I first watched this movie I didn't particularly like it much because I felt disconnected from the characters. Like Villeneuve made it with this cold and clinical approach, when I much prefer stories as empathetic towards them as your channel. But like with the first video that changed my view, Batman vs Superman, I now appreciate it much more and am definitely going to rewatch it at some point. Keep up the great work. I hope one of the videos coming is on at least one of the harry potter movies.
One of the few reboots/new entries into or of a established world that I consider to be a 10/10. I love the original but 2049 left me feeling depressed as hell for a few days after finishing it. Fantastic movie
Love the video only thing is i disagree with the notion that K's Joi was just programmed to be perfect for him and was only that way. Considering her dislike for somethings K liked, wanting to risk herself so K doesnt get caught (By the literally people that programmed her and K didnt want that), and her final moments where she sacrifce herself i just cant believe that programming would make her like this. I think Joi found her soul because of K and him validating her agency always reminding her she doesnt have to cater to his every need... So she doesnt. Growing her own motives, desires, and wants for K to be more than just a machine. She might of had a programming favorabilty to the name Joe and gave him validation for something that isnt true but that validation was a important step for K's journey to find his soul just like how K was a important step for Joi to find hers. Which ties in nicely with the themes of what it means to be human and how it isnt our physical body that determines our soul/humanity expanding that wing to even beings that are purely digital. Which imo just makes more sense and is themetical consistent with the bladerunner series. Which brings me to the black eye Joi scene where he gets confronted by a advertisment of Joi, a shell of his version of her. I think what this does for him is remind him of the memories he has with Joi and genuine love they shared. That was the moment K realized what is important to him. So he saves deckard and reunites a love of a family that made those memories that made K... K. Even if he meant nothing to them they meant the world for him (kinda quite literally). Wanna reiterate that I loved the video essay beauitfully edited and great vo. Great work and keep it up.
Hey Bailey. First of all, thank you. It's an awesome video. I can't ever get enough of 2049, and getting your take on it made my day. Also, like Villeneuve, i'm french-canadian (Québécois); and it's refresing to hear someone with english as first language say "Villeneuve" properly, and not "Villenouve".😅
William Blake: "Why wilt thou give to her a Body whose life is but a Shade? Her joy and love, a shade: a shade of sweet repose: But animated and vegetated, she is a devouring worm:" "Man divided from his Emanation is a dark Spectre His Emanation is an ever-weeping melancholy Shadow." "The deep of winter came, What time the secret child Descended thro’ the orient gates of the eternal day."
Very good video of a wonderful film. I know this might be considered sacrilegious, but I actually prefer 2049 to the original. Either way, this is one of the best sequels in history.
Hello Mr. Loverboy. This was a very good "analysis" of the whole atmosphere that involves this movie and the people who watch it. The fact that the movie is sterile, its architecture is utilitarian and without artistry or warmth, as well as the fact the the characters appear often alone are all very coherent with what is communicated, a cut and dry world. A world in which, at least for me, replicants can seem more human than the humans . It took me time to appreciate this movie, since in the first time I watched it gave me a bad sensation in the stomach, but as I watched more times, I came to understand it and notice that is part of a context. However, I still prefer the first Blade Runner (1982), maybe because I was a kid at the time and I had an emotional connection with the characters of Harrison Ford and Rutger Hauer. Their interaction in the last scene, in the roof top, was epic.
One thing I forgot, perhaps you can answer this question. At the end when K is lying on the steps, he puts his hand out and looks at the snow falling on it, and at the same time Deckard walks in Anna has her back to him with her hand stretched out with snow on her hand. Symbolism? I have the feeling there is something more about the connection between K and Anna. Yes he has her memories, but could there be a real connection between K and Anna. Being that a female replicant who could reproduce, wouldn’t one assume a female child would have been more important than a male child. Since Freya said that is just a piece of the puzzle, could it be Rachael had twins, but the boy was taken away and hidden somewhere else. And Anna was the one they were more interested in? It is far fetched I know, however, that is something I have pondered over because of that last five minutes. Had this done well at the box office, I wonder if there was a story line for a sequel, with K not actually dying but passed out and saved with just such a twist. To speculate is pointless since it will not come to pass. However, I could envision all kinds of scenarios where this could have been achieved given the blackout and the technology. I just felt there was something about K having her memories. How did he get them in the first place. I wish I knew, since it does not explain in the movie. Just a thought.
All these other yt act like joy was the same as a replicant looking to find the definition of humanity and they are so so off this is probably the best take on 2049 I’ve seen and I’ve seen a bunch of them
I love being isolated. If you hate being alone, get a clingy girlfriend for a year. That'll cure your isolation depression. That was a few years ago and just seeing another person's face STILL pisses me off. I can't get alone enough
My parents said I was almost named Bailey. I dodged a massive bullet there. I'm not even kidding. I wish I had proof cause I'm genuinely not even kidding. I love my name. My name means "He who God sends" mega kickass and based
Oh and what do you think about harry potter 6?? I've always wanted someone smarter than me to make a video essay analyzing it's cinematography and how it makes me feel
I actually disagree that Kay not being human is an inherently cruel twist. Both blade runner movies are deeply about the humanity of androids. That they aren't without humanity, but rather it is deprived of them from a culture and economy that uses them as slave labor. 2049 is, I think, a story about the experience of claiming ones humanity in the face of minoritization. Kay's pain at hearing he isn't human isn't due having his humanity taken from him. Rather, his pain is the realization that he has been tying humanity to being human - justifying his work and killing his own kind on those grounds. It's the pain of someone realizing what they've always had, and that they denied it and killed to deny it. It's the pain of the loss of so many years and so many lives to the myth that they're less a person than anyone else.
Ran this as a poll on Twitter and it proved pretty divisive so - which is your preferred Blade Runner movie: the original or 2049?
Both are in my top 70 or so, but I'm a 2049 boy, easily. K is just too perfectly involving as a protagonist!
2049 is the better film, 1982 has the best scene.
Whereas '2049' was like watching something I'd dreamed of before my eyes, and I finally felt like I "got" the world
Both. I refuse to choose.
2049 is my 4th favorite movie of all time. Watching it reminds me in every possible way why I love cinema. A technical masterpiece interwoven with deep rich themes and a bittersweet mix of loneliness and despair complimented with hope and beauty.
You are not alone in there. I thought 2001 was unbeatable until I watched BR2049. It feels like a dream
Only your 4th? What's your favorite? Joker? Taxi Driver? Revenge of The Sith? I can't choose a favorite. I have a half a dozen favorite movies. There is no 2nd, 3rd, or 4th favorite movie for me
It’s also in my top ten, easily.
“I’m gonna make a video as quick as a can” ends up making a masterpiece. Well done once again dude, truly inspirational stuff
This film is a true masterpiece and it’s all the more impressive because it was a reboot sequel to a ~35 year old bonafide classic. Truly an incredible feat.
yeah reboot sequels are generally not very good, but I liked this one actually more than the first one.
Both Blade Runner films are utter masterpieces, both left me in tears.
It’s interesting that the thing that connects K most to his longing for humanity is a wooden horse, AKA a trick, a facade, something not real.
Oh wow I hadn't thought about it like that.
Really good analysis.
Like the Origamis in the original film
Villeneuve’s masterpiece. Loneliness and isolation hadn’t felt this intimate in cinema since Coppola’s THE CONVERSATION.
Hey there! Nothing to add, nothing to plug - just want to say: THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE

@@LoverboyMedia of course man! Trust me I know exactly what it’s like to put forth shots and scene together to it sometimes overlooked
Bailey, all your video essays are great, but this is definitely the greatest yet! The philosophical and ethical issues were very deftly handled and all your thoughts were expressed in an incredibly beautiful way. You should absolutely be proud of yourself for this one!
Haven't watched either Blade Runner movie, so I'm dropping a comment for the algorithm now, and I'll be back to watch this video later.
Same!
Did you finally get to watch them?
All hits no misses how does he do it
beautifully said. thank you for expressing 2049's delicate heart so well
One of my all-time favorites! Best movie of 2017 imo
Best movie of 2049
Genuinely one of the best video essays I have ever seen. You recontextualized how I see a film I already dearly love. Incredible work.
This is the one. This is the heart of 2049. Bravo.
Another absolute banger of a video. One of the best in this space. All hits, no misses.

I bought Blade Runner: 2049 on blu-ray recently. But for some reason I never actually got around to watching it... I will now!
i love that you posted this, i have not stopped thkning about this movie
I hope this isn't the last year of you doing this but if it is WHAT A WAY TO START. Can't wait for everything else to come.
It's my ideal film. I can revisit it anytime and not get bored. Every frame is perfect, so that's an art gallery of 351,360 beautiful frames.
Probably my favorite sci-fi film, it's great to see a video on it from you! I've seen so many analyses but yours are always unique so I'm excited.

Like tears in snow is the only way this could have ended and it was still so earned. The legend has done it again. Here’s to the trench run!
I am stunned. All I can say is thank you.

Desolution and despair have their beauty. Isolation and empathy are two poles of being and their contrast completes each other.

WOW. What a phenomenal video for a phenomenal movie!!!
Bladerunner 1982: Like tears in the rain.
Bladerunner 2049: Like tears in the snow
The movies are Yin and Yang. The strive for life and expression in Blade Runner and that of Love and Attachment in BR 2049.
I really like this film. A really good break down of the film. I think it went over most people’s head.
Nice use of burials Moth at the 6 Minute mark.!

William Blake:
"Why wilt thou give to her a Body whose life is but a Shade?
Her joy and love, a shade: a shade of sweet repose:
But animated and vegetated, she is a devouring worm:"
"Man divided from his Emanation is a dark Spectre
His Emanation is an ever-weeping melancholy Shadow."
"The deep of winter came,
What time the secret child
Descended thro’ the orient gates of the eternal day."
Brilliant review for the most brilliant sci-fi movie of the 21st century (or at least one of top five sci-movies of this century)!
Love, love, love, love, love, love this video. Empathy First! ❤
I kinda hate that you can click the like button more than once 🙃
25:58 I think he found causality and merovingian in the matrix can elaborate for another discussion.
Great perspective on the film.
28:00 This is what drove neo of the matrix to find the architect. This is insane, reality is geometric gravitacional life source that moves in waves.
Good job mate! Luv ya brother :)
Loved it🔥
This was awesome!!!
can you please do avatar 2?????? absolutely love this channel
Very good video of a wonderful film. I know this might be considered sacrilegious, but I actually prefer 2049 to the original. Either way, this is one of the best sequels in history.
loved this!
Hello Mr.
Dead Heat as far as antagonists - Roy Batty and Luv. Damn!
Another video about literally me? Sure why not
All these other yt act like joy was the same as a replicant looking to find the definition of humanity and they are so so off this is probably the best take on 2049 I’ve seen and I’ve seen a bunch of them
I love being isolated. If you hate being alone, get a clingy girlfriend for a year. That'll cure your isolation depression. That was a few years ago and just seeing another person's face STILL pisses me off. I can't get alone enough
whats the background music from 0:50 to 1:50?
You gotta post the music you used for this video man, its great!
My parents said I was almost named Bailey. I dodged a massive bullet there. I'm not even kidding. I wish I had proof cause I'm genuinely not even kidding. I love my name. My name means "He who God sends" mega kickass and based
great vid! I subscribed... what are the 2 songs at 0:09 & 15:57 please?
DAMN good job. 👏👏👏
MASTERPIECE OF A VID. NOW WE NEED ONE ON DUNKIRK. THE LAST OF US 2. THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.
Oh and what do you think about harry potter 6?? I've always wanted someone smarter than me to make a video essay analyzing it's cinematography and how it makes me feel
❤
I felt so bad for the Deckard’s dog. They just left him in a radiated abandoned building. The dog probably was a replicant but still.
Great job ! You got the quote wrong, though . It's
tears in the rain
Not tears in the snow❄️
You can just dubs it in i won't tell. 🎉
what about the original
@loverboymedia Ya wouldn't happen to have any cheese on ya...would ya boy ?
🎉😮🎉😮🎉...
