15:00 "goes against the entropy of an entire industry" Well said. TENET did something DIFFERENT. Love it or hate it, you have to applaud film makers who actually try to make their films more than the sum of all current tropes.
One thing I love about Christopher Nolan even in movies of his that I’m not crazy about, is that he’s constantly experimenting and trying new things and totally committing to them. Even when it doesn’t totally work for me, I can admire that creative instinct.
I personally loved it, but even if I shared your opinion, I’ll take that over safe, boring, generic, studio mandated, sterile blockbusters, any day of the week.
It's the energy you bring to talking about a movie I haven't even seen and don't have a whole lot of interest in seeing that gets me. Nolan might not really do it for me most of the time, but it's so much fun to hear you talk about his work.
I saw Tenet 2x in the movie theatre when it came out. I didn't understand it the first time, but it didn't matter because I was invested in the Protagonist story. The second time it was amazing. And then I bought the dvd and I've rewatched it many times. I even have a Sator square tattoo. I adore Tenet. The movie is amazing. Just feel it. And I felt it so much in the movie theatre with the music blasting off, wow.
I heard in a different comment section that a poor dude went to watch this in IMAX in a seat by the wall and left the theater hearing slightly less in his left ear than his right 😆
“This shit is fire, drop it.” - Christopher Nolan This is definitely how it happened. I’m in the same boat. I wasn’t crazy about Tenet when I first watched it, but the more I watched it, the more I was able to embrace it. I still think it’s Nolan’s weakest film in a long time, but I like it for what it is.
I thought it was amazing the first time I watched it (With subtitles but it was on a plane so those two cancel out.) and by far better than Interstellar and weirdly I enjoy the emotions of the Protagonist. That being written Dunkirk (2017) and other such films in Nolan's repertoire are better.
When I first saw it I must have been in “vibes mode” because I came out and absolutely loved it. I have watched it multiple times which helped to solidify everything inside it. I followed along with the plot on first watch but obviously it clicked even more on future watches. Glad to see you did a video on it because it does deserve the love
I love how Bailey talks about the things he loves, fuck it’s like serotonin to me! Giving Tenet the love it deserves…I’ve always said when people ask what it’s about “how cares it’s sick as shit!!”
_Tenet_ - one of my favorite movies of all time. Up there with _2001, Arrival, Alien_ - I think this movie is brilliant, original, and, as you say, pedal to the metal all the way through.
I watched Tenet for the first time yesterday. I was so impressed I went to UA-cam to watch all the "explained" and such videos. Not because I needed explanations, but because I wanted MORE. And I watched them all. And this one is definitely the best of them!
I LOVED & LOVE Tenet!! On my sixth rewatch now! The film demands something of you. It’s not a passive experience. It both compels and demands your engagement! I’ve never seen anything quite like it!
I love TENET as well. I literally watched it in theaters about 5 times and then I bought it in 4K and watched it at least 3 more times. Multiple rewatches (at least seeing it twice) do result in a BETTER understanding of the film even if not a COMPLETE understanding of the film. This movie had enthralled me so much that I spent a lot of time researching TENET on the internet, but I know the majority of normal humans wouldn’t do that lol.
Even without completely understanding tenet. I do know but after the first time I loved it. Everything. The sound. The cinematography. The actinng. The weirdness. It's for me yet another masterpiece in the Nolan filmography. He is a master. Even the name tenet is masterful.
I honestly loved Tenet on my first and only watch, and like yourself I keep coming back to the movie. I'm glad you've released this video, I've found it difficult to find any video essays that aren't negative about the film.
This movie had my full attention for close to five hours. When the movie ended on my first watch, I felt so bamboozled and clueless that I had to watch it again……immediately. I tried to piece things together from both watches but I can tell you that I’m still learning about this movie till today. Tenet is still my fav Nolan movie…..after The Prestige
I definitely don't consider myself a genius in any way, but when I hear people talk about how they didn't understand Tenet at all, I kinda feel like one. I walked out of the theatre on my first viewing and actually felt like I understood most of it. Obviously repeat viewings showed me some things I missed and deepened my understanding of the movie, but from the first time I felt like I generally understood the plot and all the sci-fi mechanics and was able to keep track of most everything that happened.
I too love Tenet, had to watch it about six times to fully get it. Once with the subtitles on. It's a puzzle box of a movie. You have to delve deep to fully appreciate it, it's not a casual viewing experience.
And you still didn't manage it...cause it's impossible, literally has zero internal coherence But you managed the second best thing: to convince yourself that you did
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. “Tenet” is going to be for movies what “808s & Heartbreak” was for Hip Hop. Pieces of art that were ahead of their time.
The moment the bass drop hit during the opening sequence I could've cried. I hadn't been to theater in MONTHS and seeing it in IMAX was just incredible. 😭
Thank you! I've been waiting for someone to go ahead and say it and I'm so proud and happy that you did. This movie requires you to shut off your snobby, prejudged notions of what a film is and forces you to play along, adapt, and roll with the punches. You saying it's a vibe is perfect, I've seen the movie probably 6 or 7 times now and between the thrills, the score (MMMMMMM), and the extreme technicality behind its making, I love it more and more every time. Watching the making of featurettes also adds a beautiful amount of clarity to things I didn't entirely consider. Like how extreme the editing must have been, how he pulled off the extreme sailing scenes with boats that literally "don't jive like this", the inverted and still going forward fight scenes, and landing a huge helicopter on the deck of a private yacht - just to name a few things. Thank you for showing me I'm not a minority on loving this film, it's honestly in my top 3 Nolans.
I absolutely love tenet's score, I remember blasting that off on my headphones and speakers constantly last year when it was released on spotify. It's something else and so unique.
Wow. Thank you for this video. That you can articulate so perfectly all my own thoughts and feelings on tenet and WITHOUT spoilers is… amazing. I don’t know where to start when people ask about this movie so from this day on I’ll take a deep breath, sit them down, and play your vid. Thanks again!!
This movie feels more like a video game. In a good way. It's engaging and it's meant to strap you in for the thrill of all that it does. It's like when you have a really good gameplay loop and something is engaging till the end but the narrative is ingrained in the gameplay loop and it's not completely clear. You're meant to take it as is.
DUDES ROCK and bailey is an absolute dude for making such a kickass video. More people need to find this channel so share, share share! This dude deserves the appreciation.
Make It Make Sense is the best advice when viewing this movie, I've seen some theorize that Neil is Kat & Sator's son. My theory is that The Protagonist is Michael from Fresh(1994).
Don't you wonder why no other truly great film needs you to do this? Not one? Not Apocalypse Now, not Jaws, not The Parallax View, Not any of Kubrick's films, not Shutter Island, not Memento or any other of Nolan's films, not Donnie Darko, not Fight Club, not Jacob's Ladder, not David Lynch's stuff, not 2001 - A Space Odyssey, not Fight Club, not anything else I can think of EXCEPT for Primer. Whose basic concept Tenet "borrows". Coincidence? I mean there are films where you don't get the basic story and plot mechanics the first time you watch them. But then we are in the territory of comparing Nolan to Tommy Wiseau. Tenet is Nolan over-indulging in an approach he likes, but overdid here. I think Tenet is a super interesting movie. But storytelling-wise it's a failure. Not because of ambition, but because the craftmanship of storytelling here is just misguided. The editing, making an exposition-heavy film and then messing with the sound mix, the reliance on plot mechanics and treating characters as mechanical things within these plot mechanics. All basic tools in filmmaking/ storytelling that were applied badly. Every time I talk to someone else in the business about Tenet, everyone is baffled how it happened in this form.
@@TheJedifr33style There's no high horse. But there are expectations of a film working as a film. And all the films I mentioned don't need to be watched several times to fully work. I still have to meet one person from the industry, who doesn't shake their head over how Tenet got made in this form.

Tenet is my favorite Nolan film so far. But my experience seeing it in cinemas was different than most. I basically went in and "felt" it rather than understood it from the first viewing simply because I've always felt that Nolan leans too far into exposition, or complexity for complexities sake, and have never taken those scenes too seriously. This meant that I got the big picture, it being a time travel Roger Moore Bond film, with a humanist protagonist as an example of the type of human we have to be to do the hard things and better this world. Small things, like what the heck is in the coat check in the opening sequence? Didn't know, didn't care. I think the story is easy to follow visually, and I never felt lost. I think the people who were lost got hung up on catching every word, which you never needed to. American agents. American agents pretending to be Ukrainian or Russian, or it doesn't matter. Double agent, here to rescue him, something important in coat check, got it.
When I heard the scientist say, "don't try to understand it. Feel it." I took her advice. I just tried to vibe with the movie. Didn't turn my brain off but ya know... Just relaxed and stopped bothering with understanding it all. And I ended up really understanding most of what was going on and I just had a blast. It was a fantastic experience. Great job, Bailey. I have come to expect well-made, thoughtful, energetic videos from this channel and you never disappoint. Great job, my guy
As soon as I saw you dropped this video I knew I had to watch Tenet 1) because you have great taste and 2) so I can watch this video without risk of being spoiled
Great video man. Keep it up. And let me just say it.. Tenet is masterpiece. My favourite action movie of all time. Haven't watched it in like 10 month but after ur video i'll have to watch it for the 4th time!
Thanks to this video I went and rewatched it for a second time and I have to say it was a far better and far more enjoyable experience this time around. Definitely made much more sense, it was just that first viewing was extremely overwhelming. This is for sure that kind of movie you need to see more than once
There's a mistake most people who watch TENET make: thinking it's a bond film. It's not. The concept of a movie is based on a paradox. Temporal Pincer Movement. And the villain isn't Sator, It's actually the humans from the future who contacted him and gave him gold in the past to make him do what they want which will destroy the present humans and possibly themselves based on the grandfather paradox. And it's because of climate change. So maybe the actual villain is Us? Destroying the world? But whatever you believe, it's not a bond film.
I agree with your frame 1457 Chapter! I mean, I agree with the whole video but that is the one I agreed with the most! It's like the music gives the movies what it needed And Honestly, there was a time around 2020 ending when I was obsessed with its whole Soundtrack!
whenever i watch tenet i feel like i am on the cusp of fully understanding what's going on but afterwards i couldn't tell you a thing about the actual inversion parts. I don't understand tenet, but i _get_ tenet
i got lost right after the theater scene, so i just watched the movie, didn't think it's bad. The stunt, the visuals and techniques are pure master class. I think people are bashing it because they want to know the details of the entire movie; knowing the plot wasnt enough for them.
Yup, beyond reason it is my favorite Nolan film. I said the same thing when I saw it in theaters, it's more than the sum of its parts. There's something about it that keeps drawing me back. I saw it twice on the big screen and would have gone back more but that was when Covid was really hurting theaters and we had to wear masks. But I fucking loved the experience
Brilliant Video Great points I Never thought about it that way before I've watched it twice it's a movie I want to love even more but I Feel it just doesn't allow you to I'd definitely watch it again a few more times tho there's nothing quite like it .

So why is this an exposition-heavy movie then? Which is not about feelings - not at all - but about plot mechanics playing out?
I love the way you talk about movies. Great vid
As soon as I saw you dropped this video I knew I had to watch Tenet 1) because you have great taste and 2) so I can watch this video without risk of being spoiled
I haven’t even seen Tenet but I thought this rocked, dude
An excellent vid essay, well done, you need more recognition!
Great video man. Keep it up.
And let me just say it.. Tenet is masterpiece. My favourite action movie of all time. Haven't watched it in like 10 month but after ur video i'll have to watch it for the 4th time!
tell don't show, it's entropy runs backwards
you nailed it. i just wish they'd bring it back to IMAX in Toronto b/c we never got to see it here.
Thanks to this video I went and rewatched it for a second time and I have to say it was a far better and far more enjoyable experience this time around. Definitely made much more sense, it was just that first viewing was extremely overwhelming. This is for sure that kind of movie you need to see more than once
welcome back man :) we missed ya
i highly recommend watching it with captions
honestly, this is how i initially approached the movie and i enjoyed it
There's a mistake most people who watch TENET make: thinking it's a bond film.
I think the dialogue sound 'problem' actually helps the film as you just have to surrender and experience the work
I agree with your frame 1457 Chapter!
I mean, I agree with the whole video but that is the one I agreed with the most!
It's like the music gives the movies what it needed
And Honestly, there was a time around 2020 ending when I was obsessed with its whole Soundtrack!
I feel the same, couldn’t stop thinking about this movie
the moment you used sicko mode in the background i went WTF. amazing video!
Exactly how I felt. First viewing, a bit dissapointed. Just thinking about it a year later? I'm amazed by it (haven't even rewatched yet)
whenever i watch tenet i feel like i am on the cusp of fully understanding what's going on but afterwards i couldn't tell you a thing about the actual inversion parts. I don't understand tenet, but i _get_ tenet
I might not truly understand your take but I certainly FEEL it
i got lost right after the theater scene, so i just watched the movie, didn't think it's bad. The stunt, the visuals and techniques are pure master class. I think people are bashing it because they want to know the details of the entire movie; knowing the plot wasnt enough for them.
11:53 I’ve thought about this too lmfao Nolan’s one of the best
"Against the entropy of an entire industry"...🤯🤯🤯
Yup, beyond reason it is my favorite Nolan film. I said the same thing when I saw it in theaters, it's more than the sum of its parts. There's something about it that keeps drawing me back. I saw it twice on the big screen and would have gone back more but that was when Covid was really hurting theaters and we had to wear masks. But I fucking loved the experience
The score of TEn3T is out of this world, no other movie comes close
Another A-tier video, Bailey. I still do not like this movie but I think it’s insanely cool how much you do.
I needed this, thank you so much!
Absolutely great vid as always ❤
dudes rock and so does this video man! so good.
Put my feelings to a UA-cam video! Gorhanssen's entire soundtrack is Oscar worthy.
I love this movie. I personally think the reason he is just called The Protagonist is this is not his story. It's Kat's.
bailey just dropped another banger LFG
Absolutely stupendous work
Greatest movie ever made for
Me.
Ahhh my weekly dose of serotonin, thanks bailey.
THE KING IS BACK!!!
Brilliant Video Great points I Never thought about it that way before I've watched it twice it's a movie I want to love even more but I Feel it just doesn't allow you to I'd definitely watch it again a few more times tho there's nothing quite like it .
You had me at "Dudes Rock"👍
Amazing video, great work my friend
Perfect way to describe Tenet is 'A Good Failure'.
