I’ve watched multiple reviews over this camera and tons of other reviews over other cameras and no one has ever done a better job explaining things like you did. Kept my attention the whole time and and actually answered several questions I had right after I thought them. Excellent job sir!
Olympus has had Live Composite in their cameras for five years or so and it’s a fantastic feature. Good to see it has found another camera system. You can some amazing things with it.
Yeah, I've been using Live Composite with the E-M1. Great feature for lightning storms and have been waiting for FF version so this might be the upgrade for me.
An absolutely fantastic and informative introduction, especially the insights on stills photography. For landscapes usually 24mp is good enough, but a 48mp and 96mp option is great
My S5/20-60mm kit arrived this week. A real advantage of holiday shopping is the extended return period available from most retailers, which allows enough time to give the product a really thorough test. I don't doubt that it does many things well, but I'll need to discover for myself whether the AF issues are as serious as some reviewers claim. 🤞🤞🤞
What do you need auto focus for? Manuel Focusing is better, you can have full control of the camera. But only rookies prefer auto focus. Real Videograhpers use Manuel.
Conundrum: I have the Panasonic G9 and am mostly a stills shooter. I love the ergonomics of the camera more than any other I’ve shot (Sony A series, Fuji X series, Canon R series). I wish it had better low light ability and the files weren’t as crunchy at high ISOs. I wish tracking AF was better but I stay because I adore the PL 10-25mm lens - I shoot wide family photography mostly and don’t care for DOF shallower than 2.8 so these mega fast and heavy lenses in FF don’t appeal to me. Is it worth moving to the S5 and 20-60mm or is that basically a wash in terms of image quality when compared with the G9 + 10-25mm? I’ll have to use higher ISOs with the slower kit lens but is the dynamic range and color info in the FF sensor still going to give me better results and can that lens stand up against the 10-25mm?
Oh, wow, Panasonic is finally catching up with most of the Olympus heritage ;) Great to see other companies slowly adopting old Oly features such as Live Comp or HiRes functions (though the new Olympus flagships can do with handheld shots as well)
I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . I am looking at the S5 because the color science is similar, but it can push me closer towards the future..... from 8 bit and beyond. Plus it is a package that I can take on the motorcycle as well as hike with and has the weather resistance that the UX-180 does not have..... for out of the box, I can match the UX-180 with Cin-D mode, or switch to V-Log between primary and B camera..... that is my thinking anyway.
Looks like a very interesting camera. Seems to me that the G9 and the S1 cameras were just getting too big, now Panasonic have realised that and packaged the ability of those cameras into a nice comfortable GH5 body (........nearly) for a far more practical camera. I did also see Gerald undones review of this camera and the autofocus in film, even for a total non starter like me, was really poor, as Panasonic have been selling this as a 'content creators' camera, I would have expected it to be like lightning, I'm hoping it was just the kit lens he was using.
As someone whose first camera is a G85, and is considering a Canon R6 as an upgrade, I"m curious what your thoughts would be. I am turned on by the Canon's stills quality, but not jazzed about the video shortcomings. The S5 solves those, but I'm not sure about the stills. Also, not many lens options at this time. I'm torn between this and the R6.
It always ticks me off a bit when I read there is going to be a camera photography review and then more than 3/4 of the time it is not photography but videography. Since personally, I feel it an imposition to pay for video stuff on my photo cameras, I generally couldn't care less what video features it has or doesn't have. They are an anathema to me. I enjoyed this video because you spent time on the stills aspect before waxing poetic on the video aspects. Maybe when you do a full review, you could split it in two. One review would deal only with the photo aspect and the other with the video aspect. Anyway thank you for the reasoned review.
I feel almost the same way. I'm trying to find out about the video functions and AF quality in video then a UA-cam review gets bogged down again in photography nonsense.
Like a lot of other pro GH5 users who this is kinda/sorta/maybe aimed at, I'm not likely to get this camera. Despite liking Lumix gear, I'm too heavily invested in MFT to slightly 'downgrade' in key features to this and then pay an astronomical amount for current huge lenses. The lack of custom buttons makes zero sense to me and for wide angle architecture work I actually do need 4k60 no crop. Would love to see a higher res version of this with S1H screen, good auto focus and uncropped 4k60 with fan. That would tempt me to spend the cash crossgrading to an L mount hybrid. Meanwhile my ground-breaking-GH6 hope fades daily. Thanks for the video.
It's a MIRCO hdmi port, not mini, they're different. I know you just misspoke, I just don't want people buying the wrong cables lol, I just ordered this and a ninja v and I got scared and had to go check the specs
This is a great camera for Panasonic! I honestly thought, "Another FF camera..." Make a new m43 camera already. Which got me thinking... S5 vs GH5s. Same price. For the most part, for most people and applications, the GH5s is now 'dead'. (Expect good holiday sales to come.) This camera alone has me really pondering the future of m43. People have been talking about m43 dying out for a decade now, and I'm one for defending its place. But today, what could they do to make m34 stand out? Unless they make the GH6 and launch it under or around $2000 with internal RAW recording... or something like that... Its going to be a hard sell. But Panasonic has a history of bring unbelievable features to the markets by introducing them with m43. What could they do? We really need to be creative with this one...
Yep.. I fear too that m43 is going to have a really hard time now.. Always liked the idea of m43. Almost bought one.. But then i looked at the fuji's and fell in love lol so bought a xt4 instead🤣 still not gonna lie.. Kinda have a sweet spot for the G9 🙈
They could have an much faster sensor like 4k180p. They might throw out the mechanical shutter and have an internal variable ND-filter. There could be a high res version with 8k (no overheating, no record limit). There could be a low low res version with 12MP, faster than the A7S-III. There could be a GoPro like electronic stabilization based on the full sensor readout and gyro data. This kind of stabilization is much better for heavy movements and bumps than any IBIS.
Panasonic is saying this is content creator camera because it's cheaper than s1 which was a flagship. Colors and sensor is same on s5, s1 and a monster s1h. And it will give you netflix and cinema quality if you know what you're doing.
Ted, what a lovely introduction to Panasonic's new offering. I shoot a lot of hand held video---fully manual, and also own the S1H. Unfortunately, after purchasing the S1H I had no $$ left over for a fork lift. So, the S5 is going to be a fantastic addition from my perspective. I do have a few personal questions when you go to review the camera. First, unlike the GH5, the S1 and S1H have diopters. My guess is they can only be adjusted to 3.0..or 3.5 at the most. I wonder if the S5 suffers from the same bizarre limitation. Second, does the peaking feature remain robust during recording? It virtually vanishes on the S1---but remains unchanged during recording on the S1H. Third, do you know if the eye cup of the S5 the same as the GH5? It looks like it to me. What picture profile were you using for the S5 footage? You skin tones look great---actually, on both the Sony and Panasonic. Finally, in your review, please take a few moments to check out the IBIS----without a stabilized lens. Thanks so much.
Lol yeah, makes sense. The DP guys reviewed the S1 and S1H with the new firmware updates. I might just go for the S1. But definitely I see the benefits of using a flip screen. Currently I shoot with a G9.
Hy I am watching your video from Pakistan🇵🇰 I want to buy a new camera in few days for videos and images as well but my main focus is cinematic videos can you please give me your good advice either I should buy mirrorless or DSLR . I am begginer so also I am having some budjet issues almost count under 500$. Please give me a suggestion.
Why would you need a top lcd screen When you can see all you need on the back lcd screen or in the view finder. Through the view finder you see what you will take and can adjust as you look through. This feature is great and much more usable than the top lcd Nice video again
The top LCD always shows every important parameter. The screen can sometimes hide the numbers when you're doing things. the top LCD will always have the numbers.
Bhagwan Singh Screen will alway give you numbers if you set the information to your liking In the view finder all you need to know when you set it up. In the view finder is what you get in the photo. Looking through the view finder is possible to alter your numbers to what you require. Well my cameras do that. No need for a top screen especially with a mirrorless camera Cheers
It is sad. they won't give. up their inferior autofocus system it does make a difference in the video. I have the GH5 and G9 I would not buy this camera because it means I got a buy all new lenses and I'd rather buy the Sony and their lenses
See the Sony's are a pain in the ass especially with non flip screens and crappy menus and sometimes colours which leaves me wanting to stay with Panasonic but then almost impossible to because the S series can't really work for wildlife.
The Gh5 Mark ll has more video features than the S5, with no crop in any mode. C4k 60, 420 10 bit And C4k 30, 422 10 bit All Intra with 400 MBPS. All Internal.
S5 looks good but me as a gh5 user wont buy it. Micro hdmi is something i dont want in 2020 and no all i will degrade my image quality n video. It seems i willl wait for the gh6
Ted....other reviewers tested AF, and it simply sucks....now my gh5 like yours dramatically improved AF after firmware 2.4. good light it's pretty damn good now. but this thing? unless they do another tweek on the AF? I'll pass and wait for a gh6. EVF is crappy, worse than gh5, HDMI is a mini, nuff said, 4K as you said is a crop (wtf? $2000>), there are recording limits, unlike gh5, and so what FF. ok better low light than a gh5, but not an S....and well, this seems a "Frankenstein" of a camera, put together by a committee that needs glasses to focus on USERS complaints about the crappy AF. 2 grand for the body, and L mount lenses are not cheap...so for the price of this system? you can get a Sony A7sIII or even the R5. Hell, you can buy 2 gh5s for the price of this thing, and I challenge anyone, in decent lighting in a comparison to tell the difference. Stills? now that's another matter. This thing should be great for that.
I’ve watched multiple reviews over this camera and tons of other reviews over other cameras and no one has ever done a better job explaining things like you did. Kept my attention the whole time and and actually answered several questions I had right after I thought them. Excellent job sir!
Lumix is my brand and I’m pretty excited about the S5. I’ve been using the S1R and love it.
So anxious to start shooting on the S5. Looks like a great run and gun 10 bit 422 full frame camera without the need for a fork lift.
Ted is the best in reviewing cameras, simple but neatly done and always spot-on. 👌🏻
That is so true....,.and at lear in the video there he exchanged the Camera the S 5 was just as good as the A 7 S III
This guy is so professional . Awesome review! 10 of 10 !
Olympus has had Live Composite in their cameras for five years or so and it’s a fantastic feature. Good to see it has found another camera system. You can some amazing things with it.
I was wandering if its the same life composite feature, us Olympus selling off their tech already? =/
Yeah, I've been using Live Composite with the E-M1. Great feature for lightning storms and have been waiting for FF version so this might be the upgrade for me.
Am I the only one who would love to see Panasonic release a more stills focused S5R??
A JUPITER LENSES! i still use it some times! regards from Moscow and thanks a lot for your work.
An absolutely fantastic and informative introduction, especially the insights on stills photography. For landscapes usually 24mp is good enough, but a 48mp and 96mp option is great
To me, they did incredible job, it's a very interesting camera.
Would definitely like to buy it, if only I could
Outstanding review. My LX100 and PanaLeica 15 f1.7 gave me enough of a taste to take this seriously.
I had barely any money and finally bought my s5
My S5/20-60mm kit arrived this week. I don't doubt that it does many things well, but I'll need to discover for myself whether the AF issues are as serious as some reviewers claim. 🤞🤞🤞
Thank you Ted, the best review as always
Looks very promising!
I like how they nail the ergonomics in their first try unlike Sony!
Great first impressions review. The AF looked pretty good here.
Man, so close. That autofocus kills it for me but I was yearning for this.
How about you shoot manual? I've bought one and I so need dramas with the af
What do you need auto focus for? Manuel Focusing is better, you can have full control of the camera. But only rookies prefer auto focus. Real Videograhpers use Manuel.

4th video in one week.. you're on fire, Ted! :D
Awesome camera, awesome review! 💟🔥📷
Oh, wow, Panasonic is finally catching up with most of the Olympus heritage ;) Great to see other companies slowly adopting old Oly features such as Live Comp or HiRes functions (though the new Olympus flagships can do with handheld shots as well)
The Nikon Z5 and Panasonic S5 are on my shopping list.
2020-- good year to be a photography gear head :) Great video Ted-
John Steinbeck finally! A good year for something!
Always been a Canon guy since 1983, but I did just buy this camera last month.
I currently focus on documentary films (on a very lean starting budget; all out of pocket) and my initial canera is the old Panasonic UX-180.... . Another great review 👍 very good deals on this camera at the moment - think it’s still worth it over say the x-t4 in that price point?
I think this camera is very interesting
I am not quiet sure if I should go for this one or for the a7iii because there are far more e mount lenses
It’s basically a full frame Gh5....I think the S5 will be the camera of 2021
Thank you for the quick video. I'm curious as to how the size compares to Sony A7 models, are they about the same size?
Respect for Zorkij 3

So tempted to get the s5 before our Crete trip in august

The Panasonic S5 is most definitely on my shopping list. Actually might put a deposit on it. In maybe soon.
It always ticks me off a bit when I read there is going to be a camera photography review and then more than 3/4 of the time it is not photography but videography. Come on... I feel the same way about STILLS, I love video. I think all in one review is good and better use of the reviewer's time!
I feel almost the same way. I'm trying to find out about the video functions and AF quality in video then a UA-cam review gets bogged down again in photography nonsense.
Panasonic should make a full frame range finder style camera like their GX Micro 4/3 series or like the Sony A7c
I just wish to say my personal experience with Panasonic brand has always been very positive whether it's a micro wave oven , TV or a camera.
Kai W said that the camera will have 5.9 Raw via atamos by the end of the year.
Right, and DCI---take that, Sony.
Like a lot of other pro GH5 users who this is kinda/sorta/maybe aimed at, I'm not likely to get this camera. hi are you going to review the new Fuji 50 1.0? thank you Bill.
Can you use M lenses on this camera?
It's a MIRCO hdmi port, not mini, they're different. I know you just misspoke, I just don't want people buying the wrong cables lol, I just ordered this and a ninja v and I got scared and had to go check the specs
wow image quality looked just like the 3,500 sony. Pretty impressive.
✌💛

Ulrich Bierwisch then the cost of the camera will go up
i was pretty excited about s5 now i can buy fuji xt3or a6400!

Mmm i wish other systems had a light 20-60 option...
👍Nice video, looks amazing. 😊
Will be picking one of these up soon
For your review, please comment on how it works with manual lenses like Leica M considering it’s lowres EVF
So how is it for stills? I never shoot video.
Can you please make a video on printing black and white photographs
When can we expect a test of the Fujifilm XF50mmF1.0 R WR ?
You make awesome and informative videos .🙂🙂
Am I missing something here? I don't think there's a video of the full review. I scrolled and scrolled and nothing besides this preview.
probably never got to do the full review...
Lol yeah, makes sense. The DP guys reviewed the S1 and S1H with the new firmware updates. I might just go for the S1. But definitely I see the benefits of using a flip screen. Currently I shoot with a G9.

Sony user here, preorodered this.
Panasonic just need to cater for wildlife shooters a bit better with their S series now. That might convince me to move over from M43 but not yet!

What else could have been better? A new video by TAOP!
I did several double takes coz I thought Ted was rocking the pirate look with an earring on the right ear. Ha!

Great camera! But aim not so sure about de auto focus.
If live comp works as well as it does on Olympus MFT it'll be a very useful feature
This camera + 20-60 kit lens + the new Sigma 85 1.4 and I (maybe) wouldn't need other lenses...
It looks almost exactly like A7III in terms of ergonomics.
The Gh5 Mark ll has more video features than the S5, with no crop in any mode. C4k 60, 420 10 bit And C4k 30, 422 10 bit All Intra with 400 MBPS. All Internal.
10:09 Raptor Ted :D
It has face detection but not phase detection :-) (pun intended) great little camera compared to the beast S1R
I’ll admit this camera is REALLY interesting but I also don’t see the point when you consider the S1 exists
Its making me wonder why there's an S1 now…
It’s depth from refocus
Sorry that should be depth from defocus
That's a micro HDMI not a mini
Panasonic has great cameras but not a very good autofocus. They need a new autofocus system but fast.
S5 looks good but me as a gh5 user wont buy it. Micro hdmi is something i dont want in 2020 and no all i will degrade my image quality n video. It seems i willl wait for the gh6
I have mixed feelings about the product made in China. Given my previous nikkor lenses made in China, frequent failures and went to services.
Bought...
wow
Oh I just
know why Panasonic now look like Sony now 🤣
2 views, niicce
They need to sort out the Contrast AF ..... it’s poor
Its not. You dontveven tried one , i have
castiel vargas it’s shit..... just look at everybody who’s been given a S5 to tests and see their videos.... It’s all about the Contrast focus
$2000>), there are recording limits, unlike gh5, and
so what FF. ok better low light than a gh5, but not an S....and well, this seems a "Frankenstein" of a camera, put together by a committee that needs glasses to focus on USERS complaints about the crappy AF. 2 grand for the body, and L mount lenses are not cheap...so for the price of this system? you can get a Sony A7sIII or even the R5. I dunno. I love my gh5. They don't finally listen to users and fix the AF? I'm going to say bye bye Panny, hello someone else. yes there are a lot of cool features, but honestly? for the money? much better options. Hell, you can buy 2 gh5s for the price of this thing, and I challenge anyone, in decent lighting in a comparison to tell the difference. Stills? now that's another matter. This thing should be great for that.
JUST GOT MINE!!!
GREAT DEAL AT B&H PHOTO..FREE LENS AND THINKTANK BAG
