MatPat's pronunciation of Japanese words being either spot-on or "there was an attempt" sent me for a loop
Me too. I was laughing pretty hard.
YouRye
@@potentiallyRealWarrenGraham very much an attempt was made
I mean at least he tries! That can't be said for very many youtubers, a lot of them just guess on the pronunciation and never bother to check, whereas it seems like Matpat usually looks up the pronunciations of words he's unfamilliar with and at least attempts to pronounce it properly.
I just know he was listening closely to Google and repeating the words over and over again, only to start over because he heard a local say the word, knew he was saying it wrong, and he started the whole process again.
As someone who has lived near reservations and heard many Native-American stories, their monsters freak me out more than anything else I've ever heard. It's a lot of work just getting them to talk about the darker stuff - they're so passionate about their beliefs and you can feel it when they speak in reverent tones of the things in the dark... it really makes me wonder sometimes!
It's hard to get us to talk about them because its actually not allowed. Saying their names and ( at least in my culture ) writing their names can call them.
@@sinfully.sweet.2548 mine too
Agreed. I was always cautioned by my family to never speak such a name outlook and especially not if I was alone at night near any kind of forest. Years later, and here I am still on edge ever hearing it being spoken aloud through a phone screen.
Its because in their belief mentioning the evil things can draw their attention
the true wendigo is one of very few monsters I find scary!
As a native I'm so happy you did your research. The amount of people that throw around terms like wendigo or skinwalkers for things they don't understand is eye rolling. Every horror channel on UA-cam brings them up but never does any research- so happy you have!
Not native but I am very particular about my religious scholarship, and I too appreciate his research
Fr
I learned about the skinwalker from an episode of Ben 10 . In Ben 10, the Yenaldooshi was described as a werewolf which was half right since skinwalkers are shapeshifters and so were old school werewolves but this version merged the classic movie monster and the yenaldooshi into a hybrid of the two.
I had done my research into wendigos myself a few years ago, but apparently I managed to miss some stuff cuz I learned new things I didn’t know. Not much, granted, but I didn’t know that the legends say a person can be taken over by more reasons other than just cannibalism. Super interesting, and I love that the theorist team always tries to do as much research about every topic they can.
@@sapphirewingthefurrycritic985 I saw that a long time ago and hated it. Mostly 'cause the native female (I'm Navajo and I Believe she was) was just an awful character (personality wise) and was disappointed. But I wasn't really into how they portrayed it. There were a lot of nit picks but since it was a children's cartoon I didn't expect anything.
“This meets all of our criteria KIDS check POSSESSIONS check” I think this perfectly describes Mat and the editors mental health
This comment deserves so much more love. It’s the funniest line in the whole episode
I do find it really interesting that these exorcisms... mostly involve, essentially, giving someone some care and attention.
Clean up the room and ask them what's wrong
Get them clean and bathed, surrounded by people trying to help them.
You can really see how these would work, whether its a real spirit possessing them. Or someone suffering some kind of menral breakdown
on the topic i remember a story that i think belonged to the islamic folklore, about a woman being unattended by her husband, she made a plan with other people, she would act like a crazy person and when her husband get worried and call a priest to check what's happening they tell him that she was possessed and he has to do some things to drive away the djin, buy jewelry and clothes, good food, treat her well and so on, this kept going for sometime and then she calmed down but he was warned that this happen because of his attitude toward her and the djin may come back again, so solving their marital dispute.
i likely missed or got wrong some dettails but you get the gist.
@@samuelesanfilippo222huh, that’s interesting and surprisingly believable
Another thing to note, if you’re ever on a reservation or in the woods by native or sacred land, DO NOT SPEAK THEIR NAMES. To them it would be like you’re trying to get their attention, especially skin walkers. Even talking about them can draw them towards you.
I've heard some people make something that sounds similar like flesh pedestrians or smth
Is that cool to say or is it anything that alludes to skin walkers
What names would you have to speak? I just need to know what not to say
@@Crow-jo2nq don’t say skinwalker or wendigo those are really the main ones, but i don’t like saying the rugaroos name either because they’re shapeshifters as well. Its honestly better to not know about them. Then you don’t have any incentive to speak their names or speak about them.
@@Oleanierum as long as you don’t include their actual name you should be ok.
Or don't worry about it, if you don't want to be possessed by fear instead
I wonder how many people that were "demonically possessed" actually had undiagnosed mental disorders that were made worse by performing exorcisms on them instead of getting them actual help.
Nearly all of them
I am the last person you would think who would believe in "possession" but it absolutely exists. A lot of the cases probably are what you say they are. But I promise there are some that are absolutely authentic. You won't fully believe it till you actually experience it but I hope you don't have that experience.
If you listen to "actual" Exorcists, they say they test for exactly that first. Some of the indicators of possession that they test for, that can't fall under mental disorders are knowledge that the patient couldn't have and them being able to speak languages they couldn't have learned.
Saleem witch trials want their money back
@@Deppability they thought priests will not test that. It is sad how low priests sit on their mind.
8:01 i loved that. "Our king died and hes hauting us what do we do?"
"Tell him hes a demi god and he has to go to heaven to rule us."
"By the heavens that just might work!"
Having a Yurei/Yokai themed Exorcist movie would be really rad. Onmyoji (shinto exorcists) have been very much romanticized and fantasized in modern media. A more grounded, faith-based version without all the magic could be interesting, especially exploring their historical relevance.
I'm so happy he actually got SPONSORED by the movie itself!!! I'm so proud of you mattyboi!!
I feel like Matpat should do a theory on The Promised Neverland, it would be interesting.
the anime, what would he even theorize about?
That would be cool
Even Turning Red was possession and exorcism.
I could see a couple theories there, but the second season was very rushed and didn't come out as good as the first
I so love the way MatPat portrays Islam (and religions in general) so respectfully and how almost everything he says is actually true.
Yeah for real. A lot of UA-camrs insult and joke about Islam and religion in general, but I appreciate that he tried being highly respectful. Sad to see him go now
You know matpats on the high life when hes sponsored by LITERAL UNIVERSAL
The amount of money he would've made...
@@drcgaming4195not just him …don’t forget he sold the company
Matpat I just wanna say that im so happy you actually do your research in all your videos :] The way you talk about all of these cultures with respect makes me so happy
Hey, follower of Shintoism here!
6:59 - If an exorcist movie or series is ever set in Japan, it would be a great representation to see Inari Shrines and their maidens.
matpat can find lore in anything even if it was a single piece of grass
Is grass REAL?! (THEORY)
XD Love this comment section
@qrter124 yeah-...
There's a UA-cam channel called The Grass Man that's pretty fun
@qrter124 Game Theory: You NEED to touch GRASS!
I love seeing accurate representation of the wendigos here! The wendigo is one of my favorite bits of folklore from where I’m from and it was also nice seeing representation from Japan as someone who’s also Japanese!
We definitely need more monster/ghost movies based on these spirits, I watched “The Weird Origins of The Wendigo” and the story the guy tells us from the 1800’s…
Yeah…that’s definitely worth it to make a movie about the Wendigo.
Agree, I kinda wanna see him watch Cult of the lambs for fun
I love how chill everyone in the comment's are it feels just really welcoming so thank you everyone for that
The analysis of the wendigo makes me realise just how much Until Dawn's team nailed the interpretation of the wendigo in the game
Right? Such a good game!
Wow, never expected Matt to cover Cree mythology! As Cree myself, I think he did a pretty good job. I just wish he mentioned how uncomfortable most of us in the culture get when someone uses the name of the creature. I dont expect him to refrain from using it as hes not part of the culture, just wish he at least acknowledged that its a taboo. Otherwise, lovely episode as usual.
If it's ok to ask, if you don't call it by name, how do you refer to it? If not ok to ask, I completely understand
What is cree?

The way I CHEERED at the monster reveal
They are honestly just… some of the most horrifying things. The twisting and devouring of humanity, both your own and others, the inescapable nature of it, how it is driven by desperation and need, the metaphor for how the acts can warp a person, etc.
I appreciate you giving disclaimers at the start of the video and being tactful and respectful about faith and religion instead of just treating it like a joke for entertainment.
I always enjoy hearing religious stories. I'm an atheist, but I believe that humanity as a whole needs faith, and it's fascinating hearing what good and evil looks like in other cultures.
Can we get maybe another part or two for this, going over some more possible possession and exorcism processes cause this video was extremely entertaining plus getting to hear about these other cultures like this is extremely fun.
Please do more of these videos!!! I love learning about different cultures’ beliefs surrounding spirits and how they interact with the world in different ways. Whether it be guardian angels, haunting, curses, possession, I love hearing about it. I find it so interesting!!!
Educate yourself. There is already enough esoteric bs going around.
We have to move forward and abolish superstition!
As a 13 year old who has never watched the exorcist, or any other scary movies, this video scared me a lot
For the record MatPat, the Shaitan is not a type of jin, he is one specific jinn/demon who disopayed god and vowed to lead humans to sin. He is like lucifer, but in Islam we believe He wasn't an Angel, but a jinn that worked with the angels at first. And Plus, all Jinn are said to be Made of spacifically smokeless fire. And also, in islam nothing can come from the underworld, except angels that watch over the souls there.
The Wendigo is probably one of my favorite spirit/monsters when it comes to myths and legend's. Thought it's to bad that it's been miss appropriated so much, both in that it changes a group of peoples culture to something very different than what it actually is and that it sucks that the whole deer skull monster we usually see with wendigos is bad, because it looks like a really awesome monster.
I'm glad Until Dawn gets wendigos right. It's only one game, but it's popular and is a good example of how they should be portrayed (with the usual amounts of artistic license). I'm still waiting on the "grows in proportion to what it eats" thing turning a wendigo into a kaiju equivalent. That would make a good movie.
@@jayemover_16 loved how scary they looked in that game, reminds me a bit of that shy guy scp or the rake.
i never heard of wendigos until that game, heard its quite accurate which is good@@jayemover_16
yeah, feel you, there is a reason why tht design caught on that well . . . the truely unforgivable thing though is not changing the monsters appearance, but its essence. Making just a yeti that eats humans out of it destroys what the wendigo is about, kills all the nuance and what makes is so so scary. The deerhead makes kinda sense, its a pray animal so having that hunt you is scaryer for the broken trust in a way just how the wendigo turns your fellow men into a threat you cant easely spot. deception as in calling with a loved ones voice does belong to the wendigos nature after all
Yeah, I feel like pop culture mixed up the windy boi and the not-deer. It's a shame, because they're both very cool and terrifying creatures, and I don't see hardly anyone talk about the not-deer as they're not very well known outside of the Appalachian mountain region.
The idea that future Exorcist could take inspiration from other cultures and their spirits is something that has me extremely excited, especially if they put the effort and make it all extremely faithful and accurate
Kids, Possessions... no death...? You've forgotten a key part Matthew!!! 0:35
He forgot purple guys and yellow rabbits
I need a film theory on the movie Talk to Me!! After watching it I have so many questions and Matt is the only one I trust for these answers!! Hoping to see a breakdown on the LOREEEE in this movie as I religiously watch almost every video from each of the theory channels. Can’t wait to see more amazing stuff from y’all !
I'm a Norse Pagan and Cherokee descendant as somebody who is half Cherokee. I like to say that your research on the wendigo was very good, but Norse mythology also has some demonic entities that would make pretty good final bosses for this franchise. Edit I'm also half Creek, according to my grandmother and she said when she was young they had to deal with a wendigo.
i’m a native american (navajo) and you got the Wendigo explanation amazing!!! I can’t explain a wendigo more perfectly than you
I think one of the most necessary exorcisms comes from film (and art), itself. ^_^ We need to encounter our demons through the magic circle of cinema in order to integrate them harmlessly into our waking persona. At least, that's one of the reasons I make films.
God I love watching Matpat on a cold autumn day
Even though he’s retired from being the head of the channel, his memory will always live on. I hope he’ll be able to have a good life with his family and I hope that will all be able to eventually accept the change is something that has to happen change all always happen and nothing will forever be the same not the oxygen in the air nothing, so we need to accept that sometimes people need to stop what they do and I hope that will all be able to accept that he is still living a good life
So glad a very popular YT channel like yours is educating viewers on what wendigos really are because like you said, people keep misrepresenting them and TikTok is not helping (although TikTok is more obssessed with skinwalkers and they also misrepresent them a lot). I'm not even a Native American.
Like I said on your Game Theory, could you also do a Film Theory on Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs? The one about the giant meatball exploding, and the scene where it intakes large amount of water molecules in the atmosphere to create those wave of foods. I’m genuinely curious as to the consequences those two could have on the planet as a whole.
My childhood! Ah yes, a theory about Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs would be great. Plus, I can't wait to hear MatPat make jokes about the voice cast (like the fact that Bill Hader, who voiced our beloved Flint Lockwood, is now famous for his role as Barry) and coming out on top with a theory that will be either dark or hopeful..
You know, the anime Ghost Hunt is about a group of ghost hunters solving paranormal mysteries that feature a group rooted in science, a person ordained by a catholic church, a monk (buddhist), a shinto priestess, and a medium. This is really cool if you’re interested in this stuff.
I remember reading a story on the wendigo. A woman encountered a wendigo, so in order to survive the encounter she decided to treat the creature as it were her grandparent. Eventually when her brother had gotten back from hunting and he saw the creature his sister pulled him aside and told him her plan. I'm a bit fuzzy on the details after the start, but eventually the wendigo asks the woman to make a sweat lodge and the man to get a constant stream of wood. I don't remember how long the story said it was inside, but eventually an old man emerged from the lodge and coughed out a frozen heart and instructed the girl to toss it in the fireplace. At least I think that how the story went, it's been at least an actual ten years since I last read that story
8:25 Guys, I have solved furries.

My mid just said YAY when I heard it.
9:50 so who's going to tell MatPat that concept is used in the anime/manga "Blue Exorcist" 😂
Honestly MatPat going on a ghost hunting trip with Sam and Colby would be really funny because he would be pointing out facts in every. single. place. imaginable.
Also everyone reading this comment, demons are no joke, so no poking around because doing so can lead to something far beyond our understanding. Something evil.
10:20 did anyone else thought that was cutout matpat or was it just me-
I thought as well
These theory’s have more real life fact than most paranormal investigators in the western world put into their jobs lol well done mat
The worst demon is the secular one which are just mental heal disorders which must dealt with by showing understanding and patience while taking sometimes years of hard work to overcome.
Small correction about Ifreet. They're not really much more evil than the average Djinn, but just more easy to anger. As spirits of fire and smoke are wanton to be.
I wonder how hard it was for him to tell so much stuff about yokai without mentioning the parallels to yokai watch. I guess there's another episode about it already at 80% completion, just because of the research done for this episode 😜
I'm really glad Mat did some in depth research on these so people can learn a little bit about it, especially Wendigo. Until Dawn did a surprisingly good job but a lot of other media portrayals focus on what makes for good entertainment instead of accuracy.
I was just watching Halloween Wars this year, where they used the skeletal figure with antlers to represent the Wendigo. (They also said something about it being part tree?) But when someone made the comment "What is a Wendigo without antlers?" All I could think was "Correct."
I heard an interpretation that it looked like a humanoid deer (without antlers) that was rotten and decomposing, that also stood on its hind legs. Is this right or am I wrong?
@@Jumpyman_thegamerYTHii so if your still wondering about this they are called "Not deer." They smell of rotting flesh and they do stand on their hind legs. If you have any more questions just ask!!
@@royal_bloom3925 Thanks for letting me know! Both the Wendigo and Not Deer are 2 of my favourite cryptids/folklore.
Regarding the Arab exorcism ritual, its very casual in concept but I've been in the room for an exorcism once. It's so much more hectic than you could ever imagine. The "possessed" individual is flailing around and screaming while the exorcist is trying dominate the jinn by reciting the Quran loud enough to be able to be heard over all the screaming. I wish no one has to witness anything like that, especially when it involves loved ones.
Film theory, thank you so much for that quick disclaimer on how you were approaching this faith-based topic. I just really appreciate the candor and respect you took a minute to show.

I definitely think you're right. The Wendigo would be an interesting final boss. These movies have so much based around faith/religion that it would be interesting to see one where there's a real world mental disorder equivalent that could be the explanation behind it. You'd be able to watch the film not knowing whether or not the person/people are truly possessed or suffering from a mental disorder. They could even touch on the morality of exorcisms and how they've been used in the past wrongfully/unknowingly, due to lack of knowledge, on people who were suffering from mental illness, just making their issues worse. It'd definitely be an interesting plotline for a story in this universe, while also bring some new things to the table like the new film is with multiple faith's rather than just one.
I really like videos like this where it's more of theorizing a hypothetical instead of trying to spin an outlandish story from the base material
Matpat: “ if you encounter a wendigo in your dreams it can follow you into the real world.”
Me: “no mom i can’t go to sleep tonight! I will get possessed!”
MatPat mispronunciation of Afarit and Yurei killed me
As a Baptist Christian who loves your videos, I'm excited to see how the pastor deals with the demon!
I tried to get some information about the Wendigo a few months ago. You explain it better than many of the things I found.
9:53 the wendigo
The demon of my people
I feel vindicated that I wasn’t the only one tired of seeing exorcism done through a Christian/Catholic viewpoint.
I’m by no means trying to bash it, but I always felt that it would be incredibly interesting to see another religions/culture take on it.
this episode was done beautifully, the way islam was covered was amazing!! it’s rare to see islam talked about in a way that doesn’t just spew hatred.
5:00, Fun Fact, there are more evil jinns than there are good jinns.
ps I am a muslim, fyi
I have a theory request. In the Disney Channel original series Recess, there was a feature length motion picture special called Recess School's Out. In it, the main antagonist Dr. Phillium Benedict opted to eliminate summer vacation as we know it by moving the moon with a tractor beam, and sending the Earth into another Ice Age. But can this be done in real life? What would happen if someone tried it?
I think a good idea for a game theory during October would be for Phasmophobia and trying to find the hidden story in the game! Or maybe seeing how many of the ghosts are close to their real life representation
I fully respect the disclaimer about religion, you have done more than 99% of entertainment in respecting other beliefs
I like how I've warched 3 different videos that all somehow talk about jinn/genies without knowing I would.
Wow, this quickly became one of my fav film theories so far!
A well researched video. Exorcisms and stuff scare me since I saw a lot of horror movies as a kid but I find religion and folklore so fascinating. Great video!
I'm surprised you didn't get gaijin goombah to come back and help with this video. He's got a whole series on Yokai, but he's also covered dJinn and even the wendigo in the past. Would have been the perfect chance to bring on an old friend
Matt showing he hasn't watched the actual movies by mispronouncing the main character's name.
Let’s be completely honest. Hearing the demon and/or the possessed person be referred to as “the exorcist” and not the person actually performing the exorcism is the spiritual successor (pardon the pun) to the monster (whose name is Adam) from Mary Shelly’s seminal novel being falsely referred to as “Frankenstein”.
Wow, the exorcist sponsored film theory. That's got to be an unfathomable feat for the theorists!
As a muslim. You did you work. But. You missed few things: 1_ It takes a strongly religious healer to talk to an entity and to fire it away.
2- yes. Many of the Jinns attack humans as a revenge from a human who hurt them and yes they just want to be heard.
3- jinns are dangerous only when they fall in love with a human. They stick to the human and refuse to leave.
4- most of exorcism sessions have a relation to jealously.
5- Allah said clearly in Quran. Ppl who use witch craft are no longer muslims. Even if they remained practicing Islam because : you ask help from an entity to hurt humans which means Forbidden . But ppl do it anyway.
6- Witch craft has few goals: to make you sick and spend the rest of your life in bed with no known sickness. To stop a woman from finding true love and marrying or have children . To stop a person from having any successful business or even finish school. And the most common one is to separate married couple and cause hate and divorce.
7- exorcism takes a lot of power and it leaves the cursed broken. Physical healing takes time.
So . Yes. May Allah protect us all.
There is ONLY one way to deal with people who say they got a demon inside them.
Punch Punch Punch Punch
Until they say
"Ok, Ok! I am an adult! I go back to work! Just stop punching me!"
Back a few thousand years ago, people with epilepsy were considered possessed. Have fun trying to exorcise seizures…
0:50 what’s behind the hair mat pat 🧐(I’m not meaning to be rude I just wanna say something (I think) is funny)
Hey MatPat love the theories they help me get through work and I appreciate all you guys do. But I haven't seen any theories on supernatural, it's one of my favorite TV shows and I'm sure with 15 seasons there's so much you could find to theorize about.
It’s Halloween season! This is perfect!!😁

Universal is taking notes, right?
Those ideas are the next Exorcist movies right there.
It always a great day when matt posts
2 thoughts came to my head when discussing the Wendigo.
1, the Wendigo is the equivalent to a real life zombie attack. So you have to blast it to pieces without getting infected by the spirit.
2, call up the WB studious to get Jensen and Jared to resurrect themselves as the Winchester bros to fight Wendigos like they did in S1E2.
Those are really the only options.
As a muslim, it's wonderful that our religion does the one thing we believe in' peace. Don't hurt the jinns, just let them vent.
As a japanese, that's hilarious. Yokai and Yurei = Covid
If you want a movie about someone afraid of becoming a cannibal while becoming a cannibal just watch "Raw". Or "Bones and All."
I think it would have been nice to see Gaijin Goomba explain part of the Japanese segment. It just felt like a good place to see him
10:49 "They're gaunt and emaciated, so hungry for human flesh they chew their own lips off."
Or, like me, they don't get enough sun and have anxiety.
Bodies made of ice sound to me like a frost Giant there are many similarities between the Indian religious beliefs and the Norse mythology
I really hope it’s good. I also love the idea of different demonic entities and that exorcism exists everywhere.
9:35 there's a really awesome anime called Mononoke about an exorcist who uses a katana. It's obviously more complicated than that, and it's a *really* trippy show, visually, but definitely worth a watch. It's a spinoff from a different anime called Ayakashi:Samurai Horror Stories(or something like that), where the protagonist of Mononoke (Medicine Seller is his name) appears in one of the arcs of the Ayakashi.
Been on a horror kick, exactly what I’ve been waiting for!
Funny story:
My 40 year old dad is terrified of the exorcist movie. When he was a kid his older siblings put the movie on there TV when he was a kid. And he's still terrified of everything about this movie.
One time he was looking through a magazine at a gas station and saw the face of the girl wile she was being pazest in the magazine and he quickly throwe the magazine on the flor.
You won't be hiding behind your hands. You'll be hiding behind your shame. This movie was a mess. Look, I'm a huge fan of the original , and Blumhouse had some good ideas mixed in here. It was just so poorly done.
They're NOT besties...they're mortal enemies. Pazuzu was explicitly invoked to violently drive Lamashtu off.
On the topic of Yokai interestingly some Yokai are created when a Kami becomes corrupted, usually by what they are the Kami of becoming polluted and those particular Yokai can actually be turned back into a Kami. An AMAZING example is in the movie Spirited Away where by washing all the garbage (including a whole bicycle) off of the Stink Spirit it turns back into the dragon like form it had as the Kami of a specific river. As another UA-camr put it: Yokai are unworshipped Kami and Kami are worshipped Yokai, or in other words the only difference between Kami and Yokai is that Kami are worshipped.
