Rokker Legend single layer jean review

  • We love single-layer jeans; in fact, so much so that we have for some years now refused to sell lined or kevlar jeans. Our favourite jeans manufacturer is the Swiss company Rokker, and to date our favourite Rokker jean has been the Rokkertech Tapered Slim. Made from a UHMWPE, it is lightweight and super strong. It looks and wears like a regular jean, but is much, much stronger. In fact, on a Cambridge test conducted by SATRA the jean achieved a slide time just shy of seven seconds. And this is impressive given that leather comes in somewhere around four seconds. The jeans also contain a component of stretch for unparalleled comfort. The final piece of the jigsaw is a set of adjustable knee pockets that take Ghost armour. Ghost also comes as standard in the hips. The Tapered Slims are not inexpensive, but we consider them to be the best and nicest motorcycle jeans that money can buy.
In only one respect did we feel that they could be improved. The taper below the knee made them, for some people, just a little bit restrictive in the calf region. And so we went to Rokker and asked them to make a jean that was a tiny bit more generous below the knee. But we were, and are, talking a tiny bit. We tested lots of different versions. Too much extra and you had an authentic 1950s look. Too little, and there wasn’t sufficient of a change to be discernible. Eventually we felt we got the fit just right.
The new jean, which has been made exclusively for us, and which is called the Rokker Legend, is in our view the perfect jean. It is everything the Tapered Slim was. To most, it will look no different. But for some, it will be just that little bit more comfortable; especially on the bike.

Not sure it's good practice to say all other manufacturers jeans are of poor quality compared to the Rokker. Not an unbiased opinion so really this video is just Chris in sales b/s mode

I understood this the orther way: Others are good, Rokker are better. But it‘s hard to argue what is better. The combination of comfort, style and protection makes Rokker very good.

I was hoping these would be an upgrade on my slim fits. Armalith comes in three abrasion grades of A-45, AA-70 and AAA-120Km/h. Knowing which grade is used in each style and how it compares to 1.2mm cowhide would be proper useful in addition to the dubious new A ratings. 1.2mm cowhide has been proven to just scuff after several track slides by MCN and survived 5+ seconds on a Cambridge machine. Rokkertechs survived 2+ seconds on the same machine, totally adequate for road use in my opinion but clear facts would be so very useful for informed choice innit!

These jeans were tested by SATRA on a Cambridge machine and scored a slide time of 6.96 seconds, hence our assertion that they are stronger than leather.

@@Motolegends Time to test 1.2mm cowhide on the same machine for a meaningful comparison then?

@@Motolegends with a 60 grit belt? That's what would be likely to give a relative abrasion time of around four to five seconds for leather on a Cambridge machine.

@@Motolegends It would be good to have a proper rebuttal/reply to the Bennetts BikeSocial video which clearly asserts that both leather and double layer jeans have a superior slide time to any single layer jeans, Rokker's included. Not least because I think both content channels represent the best in the sector and I think you both champion high quality information, transparency and push for what's best for us bikers. I for one buy my gear at Motolegends and my bike insurance from Bennetts! 😁
Also, why do single layer jeans need to be MORE abrasion protective to justify being on every biker's summer shopping list? Surely just being in the same ballpark is a fine achievement given no-one would contest how much more comfortable and wearable they are? That's a more than acceptable trade off isn't it?
The winner here can only be the consumer and hopefully, in the mid term, we might get yet clearer standards out of this. Even the newish A/AA/AAA standards can be misleading it seems.

@@AyoHues That might not be possible, certainly not on the Bennetts video thread because if you post a comment on that thread that questions their findings, they remove it. Here is a comment I posted on the Bennetts thread, they removed it because "it incited hatred":
"Some of your statements, whether made with the best intentions or not, are scientifically incorrect. The Cambridge machine is most certainly not a more realistic example of a bad crash on the grippiest surface. When you come off a bike and begin to slide, you immediately begin to decelerate. The rate of deceleration will be determined by the coefficient of friction of what is sliding, which in this case is the material from which the jeans are made. The Cambridge machine does not in any way take this into account, the velocity is kept constant. This is not what happens in a crash, you do not slide forever, hence your assertion that "the Cambridge machine is a more realistic example of a bad crash on the grippiest surface" is false. The Darmstadt test however, drops the jeans at a set speed, and they then decelerate until they stop, and then the damage is assessed to see if they pass. Which is far more similar to what happens in a crash. Put another way, a very weak material soaked in a highly technical lubricant could well have a better slide time on the Cambridge machine than a motorcycle jean, be that a single layer jean or a lined one. The problem we have here is that we have a journalist hungry for clicks going up against a marketeer desparate for sales, both trying to simplify a highly technical and scientific subject when it is not really appropriate to do so."

Jeans are great but after wearing they do crease and colour fades on the creasing behind the knee - checked with Motolegends and this is how they are. Appreciate that they are not fashion items but worth being aware of. Doesn't distract from the overall quality fo the jeans.

Never tried Rokker, but recently tried the new Roadskin Taranis jeans, Triple A, with D30 armour @ £180.00, and it was really impressive the fit and comfort. I wonder how these two would compare.

Evening Chris, I have to say that this is one of the finest videos on motorcycle clothing I’ve ever watched and listened too. You knowledge and passion leap from the screen and make me want to buy a pair of these jeans. I have quite well developed calf muscles so these will be ideal. The price is fair enough for the top notch product that it is. Thank you for putting so much effort in to what you do 🙏

👋 hi ! ... it still does appear to be a struggle to find jeans for the larger lady, who is vertically challenged 🤷🏻‍♀️ recent struggles to find summer riding gear, has proved a frustrating problem so far

We manage to fit jeans to a lot of larger, vertically-challenged ladies. We are probably your best bet, especially as we do lots of custom fitting. Very rarely do we fail, although just occasionally the challenge is too much, even for us!
