I love how Jay still has a sense of how far your money can go and what it's worth. Even though he's worth almost $500 million he still knows that 28k for a tool box is stupid expensive. Most people can't even afford a car that cost that much let alone just a box to hold your tools.
When Jay blushes at the price, you know you got problems...
Jay bought himself some new jeans, good for him.
Probably paid for by this 18-minute ad for Snap-on.
thats a good one
lol, good eye.
pietje puk check out the Apple Watch!
Put that check for this fuckin commercial to good use I guess.
11: 37
I love the part where Jay lets us look into his own Snap-On tool box with its jumble of tools..
"28000$ Wow..." Jays jaw just dented one of those steel tops.
Trish Rodman he couldn't believe it
Trish Rodman Almost every price quote from Snap-on will break the average guys, bank.
LMAO here...Even a Snap-on can't handle getting Jay jaw'd.
Yep I was going to say this !
28K, OMG i'm dead
I push out those wrenches six day a week for a living. The tools are excellent. My dad wouldn’t use any other brand but Snap On.
I hope he’s proud that I’m in the wrench shop. RIP dad.🔧❤️🙏🏻
I inherited my dad's Snap On tools and tool boxes which made his living for 53 years as a mechanic. The boxes work exactly like new, of course there are stains and scratches on the doors and sides. His tools are scratched and slightly disarrayed from when I moved them to my garage. It literally took a tow truck to pick up the 5 cabinets and place them on the trailer then again to off load them at my place! The tow truck driver knew my dad well and would not take a dime from me for the move! Awesome guy! Dad's Snap On boxes have many scrapes and a few deep, down to the bare metel scratches in them. I have been contemplating restoring the paint to new condition but also feel I should just apply a coat of wax and leave them as dad left them. These scratches are a testament to the hard work he did as a for real mechanic and not a "service technician". I'm on the fence, as to a tool box paint restoration. I do use his tools often, they are nicer than mine. My tools are all older Craftsman. Not quite the high finish and super tight fit of the older Snap On , but they have served me well for many years as a weekend warrior and handyman. I get a warm feeling using dad's tools!
I do collect old and modern tools. My favorite place because it is so close to me is the Habitat Restore. One of my recent finds was a Starrett # 443 ratchet with a 1916 patent date. It is a 5/8 female drive in good working condition. I had no idea Starrett made this type of tool. I also recently picked up a 12 piece set of Starrett machinist jacks and several Mitutoyo micrometers.
My dad worked for a family owned tool company that SNAP-ON bought and moved production overseas. What a great company for selling expensive tools made overseas.
Jay, as always, thank you for taking the time to show different aspects of your passion/collection. Carry on!
I rarely comment on uploads, but I've seen most of Jays, and this is probably my favourite. You get even more of a sense of how much Jay is a car guy, and it's probably made me like him even more.
For the weekend mechanic, walking onto a Snap On truck means you've made it. That's fine, I remember feeling that way.
For guys who fix other people's garbage for a living, the Snap On guy is basically a tax collector, ready to take your hard-earned money so that you can keep on making money. It's the price of living the life we chose to live. The Snap-On guy is just making a living too.
Snap On makes some of the finest tools in the industry and the name rightly carries a certain amount of romance and respect, but keep in mind that it's not all fun and emotion. Depending on the particular job, you can make a fine pay check on Harbor Freight and Sears.
Moral of the story, Snap-On makes beautifully durable tools, but that level of quality isn't necessary for most tools for most jobs. You have to balance convenience and debt.
RebelFlag61 well said mate
Snap-On even over prices rulers, it's like $30 for a 6" ruler and almost $50 for 12".
Well spoken my friend!
I like that (The Snap-On guy is just making a living too.) No, he’s making a killing! I’ve bought my share of Snap-On Tools also and they are great but I always advise young mechanics starting out to NOT buy them on the E.C. Extended Credit plan.
Now I want to hear more about that steam engine for the MIT thesis.
Waiting for the Harbor Freight truck.

Rickshaw!
Hahaha Amen brother!!!
So a truck full of crap.
The garbage truck comes once a day
It's just amazing!!! When I watch some episodes of this show like this one, time passes so fast. 18 mins feels like 3. It's like time travel. I love it. I wish I had a place to put and money to buy these tools. Jay is living the dream.
$28000!!!!! LMAO
It has keys, but no motor?!
Exactly,,, 30 grand for a toolbox you got to do a lot of mechanicing.
I went through 2 divorces. Lost a business due to my health. And 4 brain surgeries. And through all that I have lost in life. the most important thing I was able to keep was my tools and I Cherish them to this day. And hope to pass them on to my son one day.
I treat my tools better than my health.
#LifeOfAGearHead
#SnapOn#1
i hope u r son is not like my own, he would not touch a tool to save his life , what a disappointment
Welcome to another Episode of Joe Leno's Garage
That's Jay leno
i bought my nephew a four draw Rollcab when he was born(about 20 years ago),removed the Castors and fitted rubber pads so it could be used in his bedroom as a "domestic" set of Drawers.
Originally filled with bay stuff(diapers, clothes and pacifiers) and over the years has had Shirts,Toys,Crayons and has had whatever else boys collect up until he was about 16 years old.
Then it slowly started storing Tools,Manuals and other trinkets until he started his Trade as an apprentice Vehicle Mechanic and now it's proudly placed at his workplace where his planning to add a TopBox soon.
My Snap-on tools have been planning a "jail break" from their section 8 Craftsman roll-away...for over three decades...
I would've kept calling him Joe the entire time.
Mr. Quarters like Matt Farah... Lol 😜
Mr. Quarters I used to have a Snap On dealer named Joe. Called him Snappy Joe.
Looks like they did it on purpose. Jay laughed about it.
Even down here in Texas the ethanol is rough. It's the EPA that people need to fight against.
Jay lets his true eco-weenie side show when he drones on about electric bicycles, solar panels, hybrids, EVs, etc. He forgets all that liberal crap when it comes to ethanol in gasoline.
That was pretty good. Was it an ad? I don't care. When they returned to the shop and started opening the drawers in the tool chest, I began to drool.
Jay is so right about collecting tools over a lifetime. I'm 66 and I still use a lot of the tools my father collected over HIS lifetime.
Marshall Dunlap So true! Some of my Craftman socket sets are almost 40 years old. I use them clean them up and put back in my $400.00 Craftman toolbox. It is the size of the one they were customizing. $30,000.00 for an empty toolbox is simply outrageous! I don't care how well made and secure it is.
I like my craftman tools. Never had any problems. Had them for over 23 years.
I've been using Snap On tools since I was old enough to pick them up, wipe them off, and put them back in my dads tool box. He was a mechanic and I learned from him there's no such thing as cheap tools. You can buy cheap tools and replace them often or by good tools and not have to replace them. At the age of 73 and now retired I have the tools for three trades, mechanic, locksmith and pipefitter. Snap On is not the only good tool but they are one of the best.
They are the Kings of the tools and chests. Thanks Jay.
Tim only buys Binford Tools…
I know snap on is expensive but I spat out my drink when I saw that price for the tool box $28000
40 plus years in the business...I own tons of Snap On tools, my youngest son who is a tech has benefited from my vast assortment. I am gradually getting out of the repair end, but I must say, Snap On are the best out there, would not use anything else...never let me down over the years. Expensive, yes, but you get what you pay for...Use Snap On tools and you will use no other...
0:37 "Would you like to see the inside?"
Just once I'd like to see Jay say, "No, not really," then just stare at him awkwardly.
This guy is a hard core salesman pushing overpriced but beautiful tools.
PIMA20132770579 sales guy was freaking annoying
My dad was a preacher/mechanic, a real car guy. He showed me all his tools one time when I was 12 and said "All these will be yours one day." Those and his rod n reels. :-)
Hey Jay,
Really appreciate the calm sense of entertainment.
Thank you.
Mr. Leno, first I love you car collection, it is impressive and amazing. Second love the passion you have for the cars you have. As a new Tech it is amazing to see someone that take pride in the tools they us and the vehicles they drive. Thank you for a great video.
I enjoyed hearing Leno answer some questions about his collection, etc. He does a great job of giving others exposure and showcasing cars and car collections but it's good to satisfy the curiosities of his many followers.
Cool! I'm headed to Harbor Freight to get one just like it! Sorry, Snap-on, it's nothing personal..
At 9:29 mark, when the actual display of tools began, my jaw hit my keyboard. Jay/Joe Leno, go right ahead and let the Prada guy make his pitch, just as long as I can see that drawer full of wrenches/spanners. Money aside, those few minutes of viewing the tools were like being in a fine art museum - for blokes. Meanwhile here in DIY land, I will keep using my mix of Harbor Freight, Craftsman, and decent finds from pawn shops and garage sales. If I worked on cars for a living, it would be a different story, but I'm not sure if SnapOn would be how my story ended or began. I like the other commenter - "tools make you money, not the toolboxes."
When Jay Leno goes..."woah, thats a lot of money" you might have to rethink your pricing.
If i could afford snap on i would buy it. The tools really do last a lifetime and then some. I have a old snap on 1/2" breaker bar i got at a garage sale for $5 that has been thru hell but works like new and I would venture guess it's 50 years old. I have had it for 20.
My favorite is "My Apprentice" being my smallish genuine vise grips, I'm 75 now and I have loved it for at least 30 years.
I make my living with Snap-On tools, love them.
28k on a toolbox? thats ridiculous...
reiner Zufall Soooo ridiculous. It kinda makes me mad that people even consider paying that. You could start a used car lot with that money. I don't get how they expect a mechanic to drop almost a years earnings on a fucking box, a box!!!! no tools just a box.
ganymedeIV4 actually no. master techs do use those boxes for their own personal tools. its how u make $ is the right tools = faster jobs= more flag hours. yes teams use them but really they are individuals boxes. Source; i was an a.s.e. mechanic
Eroc Wildson
A $28k box isn't for a entry level guy, a dealer mechanic can easily make over 100k. Nobody pays list price, trade in value on a Snap On is usually about what you paid for it. I own a $15k Snap On box I have maybe 6k into it over 30 years.
last time i checked the BOX HOLDING the tools doesnt help actually make any money. There is no debate that the right tool for the job will definitely make you more money, however the BRAND of tool can be argued.
Obecny75
No question there are many, high quality tool manufacturers, and many high quality tool box manufacturers. Keep in mind most high quality European tools are not readily available in the US, and if you order them they end up being just as or more expensive than Snap On. For a guy who takes pride in his work and likes things to look good and feel good, cost is only a small factor. If you want to dig around in a $400.00 tool box for the next 30-40 years rock on brother. If my box went missing today I'd order a new one Monday morning. Do you want a Cruze or a Corvette? I'll take the Vette thanks.
Awesome love snap on tools and their boxes.
$17k for just the bottom part of that blue epiq, is fucking stupid. I get that they are nice, but SnapOn has always been extremely overpriced.
ApostleJack Then don't buy it... its that simple
Yes, feels overpriced. But then again, it is for professionals that really value it (and see it as an 30+ year investment). Is like a thousand dollar (or way more) knife set. A professional chef will value it (and invest in it because of how long they last) but for everybody else they are just overpriced.
they work via their own credit line. The image factor, like at dealers or garages.. all that fairy taling stuff that runs through peoples heads. Another fact within integrity is a lot of worthless values written. I remember a toolbox on our military plane.. thousands of dollars. Basic tools. Some pros need incredibly nerdy numbers.
If you open your toolbox once a week you might be right but if you rely on your toolbox every minute of the day you'll find it money well spent.
DerSchmuseTigger Well said!
I love how every time the guy tries to go on about one of his products, Jay just sort of cuts him off with some care free response.
LOL. Jay does that to everyone, which normally annoys me if I'm being honest, but in this case, it's refreshing because the Snap-on salesperson acts pretty cringe-worthy.
:) Excellent episode!
Great to see that side of Jay & Jay's Garage!!
great video - should have a whole episode someone just asks jay questions! he really has very thoughtful and insightful answers!
Thank you Mr. Leno everyone else is slamming the Snap-On tools nice review .
Snap on are the Best Period, been in Business for over 100 years for a Reason
I bought Snap on badge from Ebay to my good tool box.Now i have proper tool box.
Random808 😂😂😂😂😂
I'm still drooling. Snap-On Tools 😋
I bought a Harbor Freight tool box for a Grand. Got Snap On Emblems on E bay Saved Myself 27K on a Snap On tool box 😂😂😂😂 put a down payment on a house with the 27k🤗🤗🤗🤗
Does it suck being poor?
@@joeframer9642 No, because we don't have to worry about burning in hell.
@@joeframer9642 28K richer for buying my stuff at harbor freight 😂😂😂😂😂
@@bob733333 hell ya lol
@@joeframer9642 "Does it suck being poor?"
LOL at you not realizing that poor people are Snap-on's primary market. They make WAY more money off poor people than off people like Jay Leno, because poor people get themselves stuck in a rut of paying the Snap-on guy on a weekly basis for the next few decades, at exorbitant interest rates. Snap-on franchise owners have been reprimanded or even have had their franchises taken away from them for not pushing Snap-on's financing plans hard enough. That's why the Snap-on guys go so hard after the young mechanics just starting out; they know they are poor and easily duped.
My 72" KRL (Master series) was the upgrade from a NAPA purchased Homak bottom and top. Its been great. As I needed more room I bought a matching cart. Thankfully because of doing all heavy trucks I'm done needing more space. They're still great to look at but I think the last addition I may go for will be a side cab. Yes, they're expensive, but as was said - its the last box I will ever need.
Now that its been 6 years it still runs like the day it was new. In terms of whats in my box - Everything from Snap-On to MAC to Harbor freight 12 point metric sockets I might have used one of in 10 years but its required by the company tool list. Napa adjustable wrenches because I don't use them often but they are still a reasonable quality product. Theres SK tools, LANG stuff, we buy what we buy and what works. Its all based on what we do. That being said - for the guys shocked over the price - those of us who use them in and out have tool sets and boxes that would blow your minds. Often times we own more stuff than the shop we work for does. And its usually over $100,000 by the time you own "everything" if you work on enough stuff. So a $28,000 tool storage that you can set up for your investment isn't really a shocker. I'm more pissed off over the fact that I have to own things I wont ever use and as such have had to literally throw money away to buy them. I've never needed a set of brake spring pliers or a hydraulic brake system bleeder (I have also not seen a vehicle in the shop with a hydraulic brake system in over 10 years). But the mandated shop tool list says I must own them. So there sits $120 worth of crap I will never use and little things like that are the waste of my money.
Thanks for the Q&A Jay! Interesting answers to questions you could have just glossed over...
Why is the skip ad button not working?
They turned it off but UA-cam still shows the tabs.
James Townsey I was talking about the 17 and a half minute ad. Normally you can skip long ads after 5 seconds.
What are ads?? I installed some free youtube ad free thing and I don't see anything? I think it's called adblock for youtube... dunno how it works, but I used to see ads every couple of minutes but after installing this, never an ad again.. Probably doesn't help the creater of the vid with youtube $$ however..
Pretty sure he was joking. The whole video was like a Snap On ad.
Michael I'd bet Jay's tool box just got a free addition.
Hell, I do it too.
Joe, you have the best videos! Thanks Joe.
Jay my friend don't feel bad our tool box looks just like yours!!!!!😄👍 you are my idol Jay!!!😃 your the reason I got interested in Mercedes Benz!!!:)
Les & Joe have amazing chemistry.
I really enjoyed this!! More shop videos , please.
Snap On makes quality tools. Have quite a few of them and they work great. I love their line/open end wrenches. They fit the best in my opinion. I have never rouned off a fastener with them.🙂
Jay says I need to get this episode done quick after seeing the prices of snap on products 👀😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I will never forget being in the boat house of one of the big shots from snap on tools he had a great big banner " we are snap on tools you screw us we screw you" loved it
That's insane when you can get a decked out Milwaukee workstation and all the drawers you want for under $3000
Woooha...love the tools....goodness ,gracious show Jay....
I love the questions at the end what a good idea I really enjoyed Jay's answers
I really enjoy watching Leno garage, it is a true man cave, hahaha.
Listening to an American say "Vee-hickle" is one of life's great pleasures.
Jay that is a working man's tool box, it doesn't need to be reorganized, it's perfect.
Nothing bad to say about Snap-On. The best quality.
As a DIYer I buy Snap-on for the most used hand tools. Hope to get a nice big Snappy box one day. Man they're pricey.
Back in 2004, when my old partner and I were building our new shop, Snap-On and Cornwell were my tool guys... I needed a new tool box; Modular system, a few new tools and a new laptop at the same time... So I pitted them against each other... the Snap-On guy just laughed me off. The Cornwell guy called me the evening after the Snap On guy was at my shop and told me to pick out the laptop I wanted, and then the color of my new tool box! Guess who got my business!
I'm retired now and traded that tool box with all of the tools to a young mechanic who has great aspirations, for the labor involved to rebuild my pick up truck. It took him over a year, but he earned his tool box with flying colors! He now has the tools he needs to excel at his trade and I have a "Retirement Truck" that will last me the rest of my life. So I have over $40000 invested in a truck that cost me $3500 and will never be worth more than $10000, but as you know Jay, it's what it's worth to the guy driving it! I'll brag about J&T Automotive in Mineral Wells Texas for as long as I live, and show off their work every single day in the big ol Country Cadillac Ford F250 Dually that I get to drive every day! Tools get the job done! When the job is done the tools are still there. Don't let them rust, pass them on to the next mechanical genius!
Your awesome Jay! Thanks for all the videos and sharing the car culture and all the knowledge. from new cars to old.. would be a dream to tour your garage. take care!
That 'triple-bank epic' tool box they go through in the shop looks like the typical garage queen type automobile. This is for display only. Did you notice the 'chrome' wheels on the tool box? All the other tool boxes in the garage area are the standard black rubber wheels.
I also love Jay's reaction every time Mr. Perry opens a drawer. He laughs, then catches himself and tries to say something positive about it. My tool boxes look just like Jay's. Here is the wrench drawer, here is the socket drawer, here is the screwdriver drawer, ... etc, etc, etc.
Snap-On is the ultimate "I need to find $50k of additional write-offs for the year" expenditure. I really enjoyed Les's presentation though! You can tell he's an exceptionally talented salesman.
After 35 years I wound up with 5 different tool boxes, plus an old school locker to keep my winter coats and boots in, and a cabinet just for my manuals and paper work. I always wanted to buy a big roll around box. It's hard sometimes for new mechanics to appreciate just how good Snap-on tools are, MAC and Matco are good, but they aren't in the same class.
This guy could sell Slimfast in Somolia.
But he couldn't sell a toolbox to a multi millionaire
Nice boxes ! Everyone thinks Snap-on is overpriced but with a lifetime warranty, customer support, and precision you get what you pay for. I'd use them if I could afford them but I'll keep using my Craftsman tools.
0:15 Always counting something. If you have to worry about counting calories you don't have to worry about counting dollars and when you have to count dollars, calories is not a problem.
This was a great video
Good looking truck Joe.
Really enjoyed Snap On Video.... the Q&A was fun. Both son's live in LA.... do you ever give tours of your garage to the public ??
this is just great stuff. more guys and i guess environments like this in the world
i love snap on have for 40 yrs
I would've guessed maybe 12k for that box. Definitely not 28k!
I was guessing 5k
Yeah i was guessing $ 973 and 5 cent but 28k wow
I was guessing aboot $620.00 maybe $55.99.
$12,000 would be drastically overpriced too. You can just about buy a new car for $12,000, and a car is WAY more complex and expensive to manufacture than any tool box Snap-on sells. Snap-on could sell it for $1,000 and still make a hefty profit. It's mostly just flat sheet metal with 90-degree bends with an extruded aluminum frame. You can build a 3-car garage for the cost of that toolbox:
"Building a garage averages $50 per square foot. Homeowners report paying between $16,821 and $38,823. A single-car garage ranges $7,750 to $17,000, 2-car garage between $16,500 and $31,000, and 3 or more upwards of $28,500."
Just droolin' on the tools. I do like a well set up box tho.
why didn't he take the truck for a spin afterword?
does it do a burnout..? lol
that was a good
Jake Leno's Garage episode
it was like Christmas when the snap-on truck came over to my tuner's shop!
When the Snap on guy says yeah we make that😂 like they have their own factory or something 😂
I love how they open the top drawer and it's full
Keep up the great videos Joel!
Whoah! Jay got rid of his flip phone!!!? World's are colliding! LOL
Man, Jay oughtta give his workers a treat and say: "Buy whatever you need, boys!"
11:37. You know Jay doesn't do any of his work when his tools and tool box are that clean.
Jay Leno seems like a good humble guy
The snap on sales guy didn't like that.
Love the videos Joe.
Being a professional mechanic. I can attest to the fact that Snap-On is a quality brand. You may pay more, but it's a high end manufacturer. My Box was a used unit, and was over $7500. At first I was hesitant to buy it. You can use the drawers as a step stool. These tools and boxes are worth it for the professional. The average homeowner, maybe a bit of overkill.
he shedds his jean skin once a few years its a beautiful site to behold im glad it happened in my lifetime
Snap on for the most part is a pleasure to use. I do not own any snap on stuff yet. Yes the price is very high and the tools even used cost more than new tools from others. With that said, there is a market for them. Having a tool that is built out of hardened tool steel from top to bottom is nice. I also do know some of the snap on stuff is being outsourced to other countries where the other red brand buys. As with anything your mileage may vary. There is a nut for every bolt. Even if that nut costs 28K to own. If money were no object for me, snap on would be my first stop for anything that is hand tools. Power tools on the other hand I prefer other brands.
28 grand are you kidding me!!!!! Sorry I'll stick with craftsman products no way I'd pay the price of a car for a tool box unless it did all the work in the shop for me.
Reid Rutledge Craftsmen has outsource to China, there not that good anymore.. I rather buy husky tools @ Home Depot...
Six of Yuan...half a dozen of the 其他
let's pray Sears doesn't go totally under.
Reid Rutledge $30,000.00 + after taxes, delivery fees, extended warranty... All my tool chest are Craftman and I have had them over 40 years. It's just as large and well laid out as the one they were customizing. Brand new tool boxes of similar size at Home Depot cost below $500.00! I am not going to lie though, I am really going to miss the quality, the reasonable prices and life time warranty of Sears/Craftman Tools😞
Getting a warranty on anything craftsman than isn't sold individually and in stock at wherever you're at is next to impossible now (in my experience, anyways). The new craftsman professional boxes aren't bad, but the cheaper ones are terrible. Sure, they might LOOK similar, but the steel is super thin, terrible drawers, terrible casters, terrible paint.
Great idea
