Jay comes across as a genuine guy who sees himself as curator and custodian of some of the worlds most coveted vehicles. The result is a very watchable series, like a book I just can't put down!

The work he's done for automotive history far outstrips his work in comedy. Good new is he made enough money doing comedy to pursue something that really matters.
I get the feeling Jay is specifically using these videos as a future preservation tool. One day sadly Jay will be gone, and his cars auctioned off (hopefully on many decades). You KNOW that each of these videos will be played with the car, and will be treasured by the future owner. It's almost like Jay is speaking directly into the future.
@Cereal Killa - I'll go one step further and say how can you not like this man! He's great, and I'm sure glad he has such a passion and knowledge of great, historic cars. Leno rules!
For sure. Leno was collecting cars before he got the tonight show. I remember him riding one of his Harley's on the Late Show when he was nothing more than a guest. He use to travel his comedy tours on his Harley. Even if he never got NBC money he would still own alot of cars.
What an amazing honor it must be for the man that originally built it (RIP) for it to be kept in this condition with as much care and love being put into it as when he first built it. Good job Jay
I'm sure he was cringing from that scrape that they put on the underside of the gullwing, but it was neat seeing him give the "no big deal". That's one of the big reasons why I admire him and his shop and all these videos he shares - he drives and uses his stuff, doesn't just polish and stare at them. That scrape just adds to the patina. Thanks for sharing this Jay.
Jay, if you're reading this, I just wanted to say how much admiration I have for you. And it's not the usual admiration for a Hollywood star because I really don't have any admiration for any of those people. It's admiration for what a normal, regular person you are despite being a Hollywood star. I admire your love for vehicles, your knowledge of them and the way you present this show. You must have had numerous fights with executives who have wanted to hide the occasional imperfections that crop up (like the scratch in today's episode). These people always want to present a sanitized, squeaky clean image of life, even while presenting a reality show. I want you to know that there are people out there (I am one) who greatly appreciate the fact that you show it like it was filmed..like it occurred. A true reality show. I watch every episode. Airbag suspension . Just like a semi . That little truck isn't anywhere near heavy enough to overcome those bags ! Must ride awful funny , though , beyond just the steering happening behind you .
The centre of gravity is probably very similar to a big front wheel drive car, so the suspension would be fine. Think lorry suspension, really heavy duty stuff. As far as the design decision of making it with such a huge overhang... Crash safety would be like if you put an egg on the nose of a brick and drove it around like that, lol :P That's taking into account the materials and design styles of the time. A modern version of that transporter could be as safe as any new lorry if you really wanted to make it.
This car was built by my mothers cousin Sigge Petersson. He lived in in a place called Kaxholmen 7 km north of Husqvarna in Sweden. He also owned a Mercedes 300 SL from 1955. I do not know what happened to that car when he died but it is really cool that this car ended up at Jay Leno.
I know it's debatable, but IMHO this is the COOLEST in your collection Jay. I mean the other cars are great but this....WOW this is awhile different level of COOL.
Mine's pretty diverse if you consider the volume to wealth ratio! :-D But seriously, no. Jay's got some Edwardian steam thing parked next to a 1950s racing car, next to an electric carriage, next to an early 90s hot hatch, next to an exotic 80s supercar, next to a prewar land speed record breaker... it just goes to each and every extreme. Brilliant!

I would love to be able to get to know Jay Leno & spend time in his shop, Meet all of his mechanics while absorbing the knowledge, knowhow, & ability of the craftsman who work for Jay!!!
You hit the nail on the head with your comment, Malcolm! You are exactly correct! He is kind enough to share his love of these vehicles with the world, and our lives become more enriched with each video that he makes - may he live forever - I wish that his collection could be preserved as a singular entity, and his garage turned into a museum, or at least turned over to the Petersen Museum, which Jay loves only second to his own collection!
Jay is so old school, God bless him. Shows us a photo album of a vintage reconstruction of an esoteric truck instead of some slick PowerPoint presentation of the latest model and with his "Grandpa glasses," still finds time to throw a dig at Netflix..
My dad got a 1961 190 sedan just before I was born, sold after I graduated High School. The windshield and door looks like that body. So cool Jay showed us this icon, thank you.
This is my favorite episode so far. I LOVE all the cool cars you have, Jay. But this is just plain wonderful, eclectic and amazing. Please keep up the awesome content.
Jay reminds me so much of my uncle talking about vintage cars. It’s awesome that people like this are out there preserving these classic machines and feats of engineering. If Jay or Sergei weren’t out there putting the work in this would have probably stayed a corgi model or a brick of steel that Mercedes just crushed. Fantastic show.
I like this guy so much !!! I did not have a chance to know him as a show man, only as a car collector ! And I could listen to him talking about his collection non stop for hours !
Back up to 12:25 There is no scratch. But it happened right where Jay was supposed to be watching so he has no one to blame but himself. Note that there is a break in the video so some expletives were probably uttered in the interim before he resumed his talk-show host unflappability.
The fact that they crushed the original Transporter is insane. I'd reinforce it a little bit so loading and unloading will get safer, because that scratch was really shocking, good thing that gullwing isn't fully restored yet. Why not go for a little more power? It's a transporter but the real thing wasn't called the Renntransporter for no reason and I'd really like to see one of those going at a 100 mp/h
Yeah .. An AMG engine :D Then the truck is louder and probably faster than the 300 sl on top of it. Why are you people so angry about this? The guys who decided to destroy obviously made a bad choice, everyone does, it wasn't some perfidious plan they followed, And come on, those "CEOs" didn't pay anything, the Renntransporter was crushed about 50 years ago, I don't think one of them is still working
People don't think of future values on what seems junk. Heck I see things all the time that I trashed as a kid and it's now worth something. I have a friend in his late 70s that is a real car guy and saved many things but he is really sad to think of when he was a kid how many of those old cars he cut up with a torch for a guy that sold scrap metal. They wouldn't have more than scrap value for 30-50 years. Think about what you throw away today as junk and what it could be worth in 50 years. Then again in 50 years it might still be junk.
@@Denstoradiskmaskinen The extreme over hang of the front end was designed so the wheelbase could be made as short as practical, which makes it significantly easier to maneuver in paddock areas. Smart fellers those Krauts!
Anybody else watching this cool video about a unique "old" car, but still can't help but look at everything in the background? The other cars, the unique old signs, etc.. it's all so cool..
I love how Jay, a real car guy's car guy, does not put some emotion evoking sound track or other antics to "jazz up" the video. It is just Jay flipping through pictures & talking about car craft - simple, love it!
It was amazing and funny to see the cabin bouncing up and down going through a putthole. And how cars were following this unique car, not overtaking it.
This is now July 2020. This video was made back in 2016, thus is at 4 years old at this time. From his recent videos, Jay looks younger and more healthy today than he did when he made this video. Hopefully that trend continues. Take good care of yourself, Jay!
I'm so glad we have Jay taking on the preservation of the cars and the men behind the cars. He is in a unique position that most of us cannot afford to do and I applaud him for his efforts.
My grandad had one of those toys! I remember playing with it when we went to visit. I (we) are so happy you have made this beautiful, quirky, unique vehicle. I just wish I could take it for a spin or push it on a carpet...
What I like about these videos is that you have information that cannot be found anywhere else, not in a library, not online, not in a government database, and you have cars that don't exist anywhere else. The fabrication photos are nice.
Excellent episode, I love my old Mercedes Benz I growing up my first 10 ten years riding in Dad's 1960 190D with it's classic rounded 1950s body style. I hope you do a full detailed episode on your Corvair Ramside pickup truck @ 1:45 , love these old Corvairs for there unique unusual design.
very cool. when i was 15 i built the model of this exact combo.. what a trip.. same colors too or close to it i just copy the picture on the box, so yeah. woohoo.
Jay, we love how you don't keep your passion all to yourself like some rich snob. We love how you share your incredible collection of cars and motorcycles, and that whole factory you run to restore and maintain them. It's all so cool; thank you, thank you, than...
Sign of a real car\vehicle collector he likes what he likes and doesn't care about other peoples tastes, or making money, or making people jealous, and he finds out the history behind these beautiful machines, but the biggest thing is he loves these cars! there used! enjoyed! And taken care of! This one off work horse that was only built for one job, and nothing more! is as loved as the most expensive pony in his stable. Keep up the good work Jay
Jay, you are the best. You can take anyone on a trip to the garage and make almost any car dream come true. Especially for the guys that are limited on funds you complete the dream with info and a ride in the car. With respect to Carson you were the greatest on the Tonight Show! Jay, thanks for constantly broadening our automotive vocabulary. Once again, you highlighted a vehicle most of us never knew existed. I love this transporter with its beautiful curves! How long did it take for you to calibrate to the steering with the front wheels so far back?
When you're a racer have the fun is getting to the racetrack. I know I have many fond memories of the vehicles I used to transport, my race cars to and from the track.
Jay, I don't speak swedish, but the pictures are in English. How cool and smart. How many of you cought that. Thank you Jay for bringing so much please for us car enthusiasm. I am retired worked some 30 plus years as an engineers and now I kinda play with my seven classic cars for which 5 are old Mercedes. I love it.
yea that's exactly my thoughts aswell and sure the restoration aint complete but im sure he didnt like that deep down inside. then again he probably doesnt care too too much about that because he isnt into these things because of the investment potential. he rarely sells cars and the ones he does probably dont interest him anymore. like the VIN # 003 Hemi Challenger (2012 or whatever) he sold at auction. back then you couldnt have the manual at all for the Challenger (how stupid is that). and a while back he sold his F150 Harley Davidson edition. the very first one made and the very first one to have the SVT Lightning package which didnt come in until later in the years of the Harley Davidson editions.
it would be a good ideal to add a safety cable on the ramp stands, have it go from the ground point and clip to the ramp like 3ft back from the stand. that would keep them from easily collapsing and causing you to damage your car
The scratch that occurred during unloading really hurt me and I'm sorry for the owner who now has the damage even though he just wanted to show us UA-cam watchers the unloading.
I feel you man.. but the car was already damaged Jay found the vehicle at the desert he make it fully operational but said he wanted to use it in that condition for a while.. it would be a shame if thay happened after the final restoration.

Of all the rear windows I have seen on the highway that window on the Mercedes truck is the best. Thanks Jay!
oh man, that scrape....adds character I guess
Fabulous. Well done Jay for sharing this wonderfully preserved piece of car history.
Jay, thank you for sharing these amazing cars with us. Your love for these cars is contagious!
I've watched this video twice now. I think its one of Jay's best. Thank you Mr. Leno.
Reminds me of an old Fire Truck-
every bump looks like the entire
cab is gonna snap off.
Thank you, Jay.
I miss YOUR Tonite Show dearly.😥
That's a beautiful truck Jay. Really have to appreciate the time and skill put into it. Thanks for sharing.
Great episode, Jay. That Fangio trophy is really something.
Hey, Jay knows his stuff, he’s a real car guy, has an amazing collection and he’s sharing it all with us. How can anyone complain about that?
Oh I'm sure they will find a way. That seems to be a hobby for far too many.. Can't learn to appreciate nothing and need to feel entitled. Smh
It's obvious this a build means more to you than most of your others. And the beautiful gift of that trophy! Thank you for sharing this!
SUPER COOL!
So happy to see it was built in Sweden.
Nobody has ever made such a “thing”. It was an amazing idea from MB.
With the SL on, it looks great!!!!
Watch the fiat multipla on this channel.
Did the ramp just scratch the car at 13:39?
Another great video, thanks for sharing.
Ohhhh NO! That gash looked horrible!
The car is all original and the "patina" was from its heritage and/or years of storage in a shipping container.
+vector6977 You can see where ramp dug into paint. original patina or not, that's a shame.
Have a feeling that scratch was already. Jay did an episode on that car and its never been repainted. All original paint.
C 63 S engine >:)
The mercedes 722s is the car that stand on that truck
It's ok. The heartless CEOs (aka the scum of many companies) who decided paid in full considering the bad rep and cost they paid.
Yeah .. An AMG engine :D Then the truck is louder and probably faster than the 300 sl on top of it.
Why are you people so angry about this? The guys who decided to destroy obviously made a bad choice, everyone does, it wasn't some perfidious plan they followed,
And come on, those "CEOs" didn't pay anything, the Renntransporter was crushed about 50 years ago, I don't think one of them is still working
Engineer: how long do you want the front overhang to be?
Merc: *Yes*
Merc: dont you ever just look at a fire engine
Longer than the one you can find on a bus!
Merc: picture a school bus, but in reverse.
Its a goofy sweep area :)
I absolutely love this transporter thanks for sharing your out of this world vehicle collection I'm a huge fan Full Send U.K.
This is now July 2020. This video was made back in 2016, thus is at 4 years old at this time. From his recent videos, Jay looks younger and more healthy today than he did when he made this video. Hopefully that trend continues. Take good care of yourself, Jay!
I really enjoy going back and viewing the past episodes. Wonderful vehicle. Jay is AWESOME.
I'm so glad we have Jay taking on the preservation of the cars and the men behind the cars. He is in a unique position that most of us cannot afford to do and I applaud him for his efforts.
The pictures are in English lol ur definitely 1 of the coolest car enthusiasts of all time...keep er goin.
I just love how passionate he is and wants to show us everything. I really appreciate it and like to watch your videos!
Crusard Modding Same here, I usually when i arrive from work i take a shower and eat while watching one these Jay car videos.
Hey Jay, thank you for sharing your passion. You know you’re also a classic 👍🏼
I wish I could be as chilled as Jay Leno!
I hope you do a full detailed episode on your Corvair Ramside pickup truck @ 1:45 , love these old Corvairs for there unique unusual design.
very cool. when i was 15 i built the model of this exact combo.. what a trip.. same colors too or close to it i just copy the picture on the box, so yeah. woohoo.
Jay Leno is the best automotive enthusiast. His knowledge of such a diverse range of automobiles is amazing. Love these videos!
Jay, we love how you don't keep your passion all to yourself like some rich snob. We love how you share your incredible collection of cars and motorcycles, and that whole factory you run to restore and maintain them. It's all so cool; thank you, thank you, than...
Jay, this video is exactly why I subscribe to your channel! Amazing. Thank you for doing what you do!
"The pictures are in English." Hahaha.
Great vehicle. I have seen the one in the Mercedes Museum and thought it was the coolest truck.
I'm just so glad you share these unique and wonderful cars, trucks and memories. Thank you Big Time
Sign of a real car\vehicle collector he likes what he likes and doesn't care about other peoples tastes, or making money, or making people jealous, and he finds out the history behind these beautiful machines, but the biggest thing is he loves these cars! there used! enjoyed! And taken care of! This one off work horse that was only built for one job, and nothing more! is as loved as the most expensive pony in his stable. Keep up the good work Jay
Thanks, Jay. Keep it alive.
Looks like the finished product if you asked Dr. Seuss to design a flatbed.
Way to keep it together Jay. I might have lost my cool to witness that gauging.
Jay, you are the best. You can take anyone on a trip to the garage and make almost any car dream come true. Especially for the guys that are limited on funds you complete the dream with info and a ride in the car. With respect to Carson you were the greatest on the Tonight Show! May you keep motoring for many many years!
Got to admit Jay is a great guy to share his love of motor vehicles and share them with the rest of use, unlike others in the hobby who just lock them away. Kudos. A real one of the kind, hats off to Sir.
Jay I might be late joining your channel but I love it. I watch Netflix and do a lot of crafting while watching. Now I watch your videos while doing crafting. I multitask 😁😁
Just wondering: when people give this type of stuff a thumbs down what are they saying they dislike?
kids. with no idea
Probably Conan fans.
Themselves, for being losers.
There just trolling
B
I love it.
just put a scratch on a million plus car! ouch!
Not fully restored yet ;-)
But still ouch
yea that's exactly my thoughts aswell and sure the restoration aint complete but im sure he didnt like that deep down inside. then again he probably doesnt care too too much about that because he isnt into these things because of the investment potential. he rarely sells cars and the ones he does probably dont interest him anymore. like the VIN # 003 Hemi Challenger (2012 or whatever) he sold at auction. back then you couldnt have the manual at all for the Challenger (how stupid is that). and a while back he sold his F150 Harley Davidson edition. the very first one made and the very first one to have the SVT Lightning package which didnt come in until later in the years of the Harley Davidson editions.
He isn't going to restore it. Not the paint anyway. (At least that's what he said when he did the video on it.)
Ander Pendragon actually he said he might do a full restoration eventually in that video
it would be a good ideal to add a safety cable on the ramp stands, have it go from the ground point and clip to the ramp like 3ft back from the stand. that would keep them from easily collapsing and causing you to damage your car
OMG! That is totally awesome! We need more people like Jay, who seemingly gives of himself, to restore cars and keep alive the history!
Jay Leno's Garage and the Vice Grip Garage are the two best shows on UA-cam!!!!!!!!!!!!!
