As a Dutchmen, i can only be jealous of your sense and awareness of your history and traditions. I wish we can only have 10% of that. I was at the tattoo in Edinburgh last weekend and that was a true eye-opener

I'm not even British but I love watching this - the history, the culture, the music, everyone coming together and they know what to do, when to do it, and why. It's what makes everyone feel a part of the same thing, it's what makes a country.

let me just say this (as a German): You can be very proud of having such a music and these muscial traditions. They are amazing and it's great too see all people shaking hands in the end. It simply shows: We're all brothers and sisters somehow!

Beautiful song worth being an anthem of its own. Portugal won't forget that during all these many centuries of history, full of ups and downs, England was the only nation that always stood by our side in every war against the invaders from the East and we retributed by sending our men to fight by your side in the WW1 even having no stake on that conflict. The Portuguese patriots will always salute you.

England has had an alliance with Portugal since 1386, the longest standing alliance ever, even before the Uk became the Uk. If you send us wine, we'll send you Morris Dancers...... ummm, we'll try to justify that later. And yes, England needs its own anthem, be it this or Jerusalem, to distiguish itself from the rest of the UK.

They piped this over the school intercom, in all the classrooms, the night we gathered and walked the hall for the last time and into the gymnasium to graduate. Anytime I hear "Land of Hope and Glory/Pomp and Circumstance", GOOOOOOOD things are happening, and is usually accompanied by extreme joy and laughter and smiling.

I wish we would have these kinds of gatherings as a people and just sing off the hymns and songs reflecting our rich history. Great Britain, you truly are impressive, not only causing me and my ancestors learn English but wow, your people have been and still are being Britons of the Nation where the sun never sets. Bob Foy As you may already know, the original line was "while you've a Lucifer to light your fag, smile boys, that's the style." But of course, in this politically correct day & age, you can't use the word "fag" anymore, even when it's being used as a slang term for a cigarette (as it is in this musical context) and NOT as a homophobic epithet.

I've enjoyed 'The Proms' on TV for many years and marvelled at the quality of the musicianship of the members of the BBC orchestras over that period. However, for me there is one glaring and very sad omission from all the favourable comments posted in that time. That is - to express profound admiration and grateful thanks to all the members of the orchestra for their wonderful music making. I'm proud to do that here and now.

We may look stupid. These songs as I remember as a small child at parties. Always played at the end of the night before we go. It does calm everyone down and bid farewell. All get together for once last moment for our Queen and country. It is very long old tradition. Bobbing (moving) up and down is very old ways to move with the music. I am in my 30's and this my parent's thing to do. Yes, it's actually lovely and funny and make each other laugh. You have to join hands even the children. It's a chance silly father's get to pull their kids about. Everyone has to hold hands. And it makes a good line of waves. Just like the Mexican wave. It's a wind down time. Then bye bye afterwards.

You are not only wanted, but loved and respected. Have a check and see how many Scots live in England, Wales and N. Ireland. Imagine a village or town with only Joneses in it! I was in the Army thirty years ago, and even now I get a lump in my throat, and my heart beats faster when I see a British Forces parade, regardless of the birthplace of the troops. Don't do yourselves down my friends. British people are not divisible, but they can be multiplied.

I was referring to the music of Elgar AND to the poetry of Kipling as a pair to each other for Queen Victoria's "Little Wars'...Auld Lang Syne (and I'm well aware that it originated from the pen of 'Bobby Burns') didn't come into the conversation...kind came to me when I noticed the theme for the 70s mopvier Young Winston was based on Elgar's Enigma variations" (Specifically variation No 10 'Nimrod' dedicated to his friend, Agustus J Jaeger)...THAT was the train (and reasoning) of my thoughts...HTH

The music to which the words of the refrain "Land of Hope and Glory, is the "trio" theme from Edward Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. The words were fitted to the melody on the suggestion of King Edward VII who told Elgar he thought the melody would make a great song.

+PrismTV we used to rule the waves and we had the worlds most powerful army and we had the biggest empire the world had ever seen, now we have the Falkland Islands, a few ships and submarines and no aircraft carriers, at the moment 2 are on the way, and a really small but really well trained army. We are but a shadow of what we were

+lee brondum I'm not British (from Hong Kong) but to be honest, I'm pretty sure plenty of us in Hong Kong who want the british back, (even at the expense of being second class citizens) -what I am trying to say is, you don't need military strength, if you were to claim Hong Kong tommorow, I know most people would be happier than we are under the god awful Chinese rule. (although I can't speak for other colonies though) we miss you, and we are ever grateful for what you did for us.

Dear Sir, I feel sad for your loss, but we in here the UK suffer the same loss. The integrity and justice we had in years gone by has been replaced with political correctness that would make present day dictatorships look benign. The only difference is that we British disguise it as 'progressiveness'

I left Britain in 1970 to get a better life! I cannot really complain - I have seen the world. But in some ways it is sad - I really want to come home to see my aging mother - now in her nineties.

Anybody living in England who finds this offensive should PISS OFF whether born here or not. My father fought under this flag.

    • @jakewells7795
      @jakewells7795 8 років тому

+loriblue1000 Nobody finds this offensive, white or black, Christian/atheist/muslim. Nobody. Someone might complain about the way the country has been run recently but everyone has a right to moan now and then (whether they were born here or not). The idea that people find any elements of innocent british patriotism offensive is a ridiculous idea anyway
(I think we are patriotic in a pretty minimalist way, yknow a prom here and there to pat ourselves on the back and then we all carry on. I like it)
That whole fiasco was really just something the media (newspapers particularly) blew up to get readers. Don't worry so much, you'll do yourself mischief.

+Jake Wells nobody is entitled to live here and moan about the flag or patriotism. I repeat - if anybody doesn't like either - piss off. Nobody should stay here grabbing what they find acceptable to them whilst objecting to our flag and our PATRIOTISM I repeat #pissoff
