    The BBC Proms is a classical music festival held every summer at the Royal Albert Hall in London, and in recent years has explored new venue spaces through the innovative Proms at... series of events. Its aim; to bring the best in classical music to the widest possible audience, which remains true to founder-conductor Henry Wood's original vision in 1895.
    Whether you are a classical connoisseur or think 'classical music is not for me' there is surely something for everyone in the 8 week stretch of concerts, workshops, talks and family events.

Perhaps because they were never in the British sphere of influence/close neighbours like most others. They just seem to be more out of place than even American or French flags. KekskruemelReloaded The DDR National Anthem wasn’t bad. It was fairly stirring, had worthy motives even if naïve ones and at least it didn’t worship whichever species of Emperor was current. Frankly, regardless of nationality or ideology, National Anthems as such tend to the banal. Songs such as “Land of Hope and Glory” and (much better) “Jerusalem” are more to the point because they express desire to serve our fellow human beings.

    I graduated today and I had the pleasure of walking out during that crescendo at 3:15 and it was surreal.

    I think this must be the patriotic song of a united world! With hundreds of millions of people, poor and rich, heroic and cowardly,
    creator and destroyer, king and peasant, every guy, girl, man and woman, I think this must be the patriotic anthem of the world!
    From Philippines.

    I can't listen to this magnificent composition without thinking of the time when England stood alone against Hitler. Although the composer lived in a different time his masterpiece speaks to all history of England's "finest hour".
    Bravo, Commonwealth friends; you deserve your glory and celebration.

      That's crazy. I was thinking the exact same thing. Gotta love the plucky Brits. Tough, proud people with awesome history. Would love to live there, from a Canadian. Always loved anything British and seeing this just reinforces that. Well said man.

    God this me gives goosebumps. BTW funny thing is that I know Sakari Oramo personally, and knew that he is a conductor okay, no other details leaked - very modest guy, But when this clip came up I was flabbergasted : Sakari Oramo conducting BBC symphony orchestra in Royal Albert Hall in BBC proms! As I said very down to earth guy in a good way.

    The irony of it is that sir Elgar never graduated.
    yet this is the standart graduation song of English speaking world.

    • @Langstrath
      @Langstrath 3 місяці тому

      Actually, it is not a graduation song in the UK and never has been; it has always been regarded as a patriotic march here. I don't think it is used as a graduation march in Australia or New Zealand either. Elgar was awarded an honorary doctorate in music by Yale University in the USA in 1905 where this March was played in his honour. It is from this performance that it began to be used as a graduation march in the USA and then later in Canada and the Philippines.

    Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free,
    How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee ?
    Wider still and wider shall thy bounds be set ;
    God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet,
    God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet.
