The crazy, the British. But how great! With wonderful music, enthusiastic people full of love for their country and an incomparable atmosphere. we poor Germans can no longer allow ourselves such honest patriotism, even if the post-war generation is not responsible for these terrible crimes of the Nazis. meanwhile we have been stripped of our identities and are being fooled by a corrupt government with no dignity or pride. I am all the more delighted with such images and hope that these enviable Britons will continue to proudly wave their flags.

Thank you Wolfgang. This clip is from a 1989 edition of Last Night of the Proms. More recent editions show an increasing use of flags of other nations and even the EU flag. For those who can receive the BBC, the next Last Night of the Proms will the first or second Saturday in Sept.

I was nineteen at the time of this footage and always liked to watch the Last Night of the Proms. The men's white jackets show sartorial elegance, something that I don't notice much of these days. Heart on sleeve music always go down well with me, especially the patriotic variety! I have a very good musical memory and possess perfect pitch.

      Lyrics to Jerusalem:
"And did those feet in ancient time
      Walk upon England's mountains green?
And was the holy Lamb of God
      On England's pleasant pastures seen?
      And did the Countenance Divine
Shine forth upon our clouded hills?
      And was Jerusalem builded here
      Among these dark Satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold:
Bring me my arrows of desire:
Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold!
Bring me my chariot of fire.
I will not cease from mental fight,
Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand
      Till we have built Jerusalem
In England's green and pleasant land."

Actually you are bang on: the dress was designed to mimic the French tricolour because this recording was made at the Last Night celebration in 1989 - the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution - and the dress was a conscious tribute to mark the occasion. Only at the very end does it transform into the flag of the UK. Not many people remember that fact (or, give the current state of Anglo-French relations, choose to do so!).

Big brother is watching you at school, in football fields. If you are caught not singing in the right attitude, you will be punished by the school or arrested by the police. @@itstuff4744 Well, that's true but Sarah Walker's dress is designed to resemble the French tricolour in honour of the 200th anniversary of the French Revolution! Thankfully, it transforms, as it should, into the UK flag at the end of "Rule Britannia!".

They argue that European composers and musicians could not flourish in the UK because we left the EU. Yet most of the greats came here decades and even generations before the UK left the EU. They don't make sense.

I will, I hope you will too. The Monarch represents us all, no longer rules over us. She/He protects us from politicians, a role reversal to be sure but would you like Tony Blair or Corbyn or Grove to be our overlord? God forbid. Let's be carefull of what we wish for!!

It may be a dirge but I cannot see what you mean when you say "God save the Queen" is german. The first man to publish it, Henry Carey in 1744 (roughly the same times "Rule Britannia" was written), was English; there is a French claim without evidence that they wrote it in the 1680s and there is a counterclaim that it dates from the early 1600s amongst the works of the English composer, John Bull. Beethoven quoted it much, much later in his "Wellington's Victory" (to represent the British victory over the French), was commissioned to write a set of keyboard variations on the tune in the early 19th century and numerous European states later adopted this anthem including the German Empire, Switzerland and Liechtenstein but its origin is definitely not german, so far as anyone knows.

No one seems to remember why Sarah Walker was dressed as she was (or they're deliberately not mentioning it).
This was 1989, the bicentenary of the French Revolution. Sarah was dressed in long, thick stripes of red, white and blue - a representation of the French tricolor! Only at the very end of "Rule, Britannia!" does her dress miraculously transform into the flag of the UK.
Are there any French viewers out there who noticed?

Thank God for UA-cam. I don’t know what this is all about, but it was exciting. I enjoyed the enthusiasm and patriotism of the Brits. We are fast approaching 2024 and many changes have occurred in both our countries since this event took place and I doubt that this event today would ring with such unabashed pride and patriotism. It’s not fashionable anymore.
