As you noted, there's so much going on here and everyone is at the top of their game. It's interesting that you mention the influence of the Beatles to their early sound. If/when you check out Your Move/All Good People, the transition between the two sections features them singing John Lennon's "All We Are Saying Is Give Peace a Chance." Jon is definitely a spiritual individual and his observations, both direct and obscure are throughout Yes' lyrics. Other Yes songs I hope you explore soon are some of my favorites from the next album, Fragile. That album introduced Rick Wakeman on keyboards, replacing Tony Kaye): You've already done Long Distance Runaround and The Fish, but the live version of The Fish (from Yessongs) is a masterclass in what Squire could do on the bass, and probably an inspiration for guys like Cliff Burton of Metallica. Next up: South Side of the Sky, Heart of the Sunrise, and of course Roundabout (Another great "first" song, Lex, but you probably know that one already. If not, it's their signature early '70s track, and you MUST check it out). Can't wait to experience more with you guys. Be well, my friends. :-)

Up until Chris Squire I never knew a live bass solo could even be achieved. It just did not happen. There was the odd guitar solo or keyboards but the main attraction was always a drum solo which gave the rest in a group a break. Listening to Yessongs "The Fish" for the very first time was a revelation, and pretty incredible. - To call his first album solo away from Yes - "Fish Out Of Water" was genius. He is missed so much.
Watching people hear this music for the first time and truly love and appreciate it often makes me cry. I lived my teenage years in the 70s, and we were so spoiled. Anytime young people are exposed to 70s music is very special and emotional for me because you don't know what you're missing until you actually hear it. And then I feel like my wishes have come true. There is nothing like sharing beauty, and especially beautiful music.
The second vocal is not an overdub, it's Chris Squire. If you listen to it again, try to imagine playing that bass line and singing the vocal at the same time. Squire was a monster
Chris sang in a church choir under the tutelage of choirmaster Barry Rose (who directed the music for Charles and Di's wedding) as a child. He credits Mr Rose as having a major influence on his formative musical proclivities.
Chris Squire was an absolute legend. I had the pleasure of seeing him, along with with all the other guys less Jon Anderson (Trevor Horn filled in) in 2009 not too long before his passing. An absolutely incredible experience.
@@100percentSNAFU I saw him with Yes many times in the 70s. I wore the grooves off my "Fish Out Of Water" album. I lost interest in Yes when they released "Tormato." And without Jon Anderson, it's just not Yes for me. Squire was a one off though. A true original. In addition to pkaying bass like no one else, many do not know that he arranged most of the band's vocal harmonies.
Yes! His vocals are so key live. He really stepped up his vocal during the Trevor Rabin Years. His bass playing so extraordinary everyone overlooks how great a vocalist he was. Hard to get recognition when singing with the likes of Jon Anderson.
@@markhavens1153 Bassists with outstanding vocal abilities really help propel a band to greatness. Of course Geddy Lee of Rush is a given, as he was principal vocalist. Supporting vocals is where Chris Squire of Yes and Kelly Groucutt of ELO really stood out fantastically.
Chris Squires is/was my favorite rock bassist, period! His baseline is always impeccable and gives such incredible and ingenious bottom to every song he plays.
I remember the first time I heard this song with headphones and the part towards the end that reverberates between your ears....ha, awesome! I think they enjoyed that too.
The bass on *every* Yes song. I remember a Rolling Stone list of best all-time bassists, and for Squire's discography it just said "any Yes song". Well RS got something right at least.
In 1971 my friend played me this Album... it totally blew me away. What musicianship, absolute class and way ahead of its time. I immediately went out and bought it and I still have the vinyl to this very day.
i did listin to this in my teens & 20s.hearing the yes album again is alot like seeing an old high school friend 40 years after graduation.the musicianship is top notch crazy good.
I have listen this song thousands of times and hear something new each time a tribute to the quality of musicianship. No one has this level of ability anymore. Music is not taught in schools. Such a shame . Kids don't listen to classical music either. Bach is crying

I saw Yes in concert several times. The level of craftmanship, musicianship, and creativity is off the charts. There was no one like them out there. Never was and never will be. They're the Mozarts of rock. I've been listening 50 years. NEVER gets old. Never.
Gotta mention bassist Chris Squire's vocals. He was the was choir boy, so he actually came up with the vocal arrangements in the band. Got to set the record straight, you know?
The bass line in this song is just amazing; RIP Chris Squire. The harmony is three singers. Steve Howe, just amazing. "Here I thought I knew about music" - by Nick. Even the drumming in this song is fantastic. There are soooo many great Yes songs and this is really close to the top. Many say CTTE is their best, or Gates or Awaken. I have trouble picking a favourite. I found out about Yes when I was 10 years old when I heard 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' from 90125. Then in the years that followed I discovered all of their earlier records and I was just overwhelmed and amazed. I've been a big Yes fan ever since and am familiar with their entire discography. I'm really looking forward to whatever next Yes song you do; there are many to choose from.
@@MKE_Mike I’ll say the same about Alan White, he didn’t have the jazz chops that Bruford does but he was still a phenomenal rock drummer. When he was really turned loose on TFTO, Relayer, and GFTO he really started punching above what people thought his weight class was.
I’ve been listening to my favourite band for fifty years. As an experiment, try playing this very loud as you drive down a highway and see if you can control the accelerator. Impossible to drive slowly!. Watched them many times and actually roadied for them in the late seventies here in London. Fabulous band.
america by paul simon also alone is wonderful, yes gave fun surfing with rock and prog blues. america by yes should belong to yes album as cover on stage, but it was recorded with sound produced for close to the edge
Hi, I was just a teenager in the 70's and this was the very first song by "Yes", I ever heard. I bought the album as soon as I was next into town and couldn't wait to get home to hear the whole album. The memories today just from hearing this track. Music as in this case, is so timeless and wonderful. Imagine seeing them in the 70's live on stage ? - Their live album "YESSONGS" includes this track and it's note for note perfect. I was 17 and my buddy wanted me to hear the long chromatic slide at the end of "Yours Is No Disgrace" on his new big stereo system. After that, I was (and still am) hooked.
Yup. They do have a pretty similar vocal tone to one another which can make it sound like it is just Jon double tracking, but if you listen to Chris’ solo material you realize he is a little different and a great singer in his own right.
I saw them in Seattle first in 1977 but I started listening to them 1975. My best friend took me to my first one and I met the love of my life there!! Epic!
I forgot how great this one is. It gets overshadowed by their bigger hits. And don't you always feel happy after listening to a Yes song? I do. And in this era, each Yes song was like 3 to 5 songs in one.

I was unfortunat enough to see Yes in '84... Then I saw them in 2003 and 2004 - something COMPLETELY different. No, but seriously, got nothing against 80's Yes really, but them going back to their roots (with a classical line-up) was a completely different experience 😍 (to me personally)
You could have a total YES Reaction channel and never get bored or run out of new discoveries. I discover new stuff everytime I listen to a song, even if I had heard it 100 times before, which I have for most Yes songs.
My son is 34 and I exposed him to YES at a young age! They became his favourite band in his mid teens. I took him, on his request, to their 35th Anniversary World Tour in the early noughties! He loved it!
I found the YES Album in my older sister's vinyl collection when i was 14 (I am 55 now). I was listening to not so great music and by the time the album was over, I was a prog head. I was literally brought to tears by what I was hearing and had not yet had a transcendent experience with music, but this album did that for me.
The reason this is so much fun for many of us watching is two-fold: a) you both are bursting with the joy of discovery at all the things we did 50 years ago hearing this when it was new, and b) you have no IDEA how quickly this band developed over their next two albums - and we do! Get ready and fasten your seat belts!
Yes is the most quintessential Prog band to ever exist. And this is coming from someone who was late to the Yes party, who also loves Rush, Genesis, Floyd, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Styx, ELP, Camel, King Crimson, as well as newer prog metal bands such as Dream Theater, Opeth, Tool, Haken, Devin Townsend, Porcupine Tree, etc. Keep up the great reactions guys!

Want even more perfection? Listen to their Yessongs version of this track to hear how they performed it live not long after this track was recorded. It's insane how amazing it sounds live. Most of their early tracks are stunning with how they pull it off so masterfully in a live setting. Howe is especially awe inspiring.
Way back in the early 70s the coolest guy in our school appeared one day with The Yes Album tucked under his arm . ( he had hippy parents ! ). Anyway The rest of us had never heard of Yes. When I asked about him who they were he gave me a pitying look but next day appeared with a cassette tape of the whole album which he gave to.me. . I took it home and YIND was the first track that came on.....I was stunned. It was like a revelation !! I'm NOT a Yes fanatic but this track is seared into my memories of that time and that place. As only a piece of music can be. So , thanks Doug Johnson. ! I don't know where you are now or how your later Life panned out but I owe you.....
The studio version is outstanding but they do a superb job on YesSongs playing this live - Yes's ability to make their live performances as good or better than the studio amazes me.
Yes improved these songs they. got better as they repeatedly played them live. Listen and compare to the YesSongs live version and you will see. I have always preferred the YesSongs versions to the studio albums even though the recording quality of that was poor. Also while I’m on my high horse please listen to the original vinyl versions. Much better than any digital remasters or remix versions.
One of my all time favourites and I couldn't have expected a better reaction. This was a real pleasure! The good period of Yes and Genesis (before their radio hit days) was not just great musicianship and songwriting but wonderful melodies. You just can't beat a great melody. Great work from you two today, thank you.
yes were my dads favorite band.. he introduced me to them and i still remember beign sat in the car and listening to this song bouncing left to right... Seeing Rick in his cape surrounded by his keyboards.. or watching Jon Anderson just in his element makes me wonder what it would of been like to experience this music back when i was brand new.. In 1971 if I was listening to music that was 50 years old it would have Alexander’s Ragtime Band. I saw Yes in1974 at Madison Square Garden. They played all of Close to the Edge, took a break then came back and played all 4 sides of their new album Tales From Topographic Oceans. Wow.
I saw The Yes at The Apollo in Glasgow Scotland, doing this album in concert when I was 13. I took it with me into the Sahara on an MP3 where I lived for ten years. The nomad who heard this were stunned into silence and loved every note played, even though the speakers I had were tiny and tinny.
My favorite music reactors, (that doesn't do you two justice) reacting to one of my favorite songs. It's so awesome to hear these remastered versions with you two and relive it for the first time. I find that as an older YES fan, the songs seem take on a deeper meaning with each passing decade. Thank you again for taking us on your musical journey.
The reason the group YES was so incomparable , is : they were capable of playing things even more technically difficult than what they put out. They were rare talents as musicians.

I was lucky enough to hear this song played live in concert by Yes at Madison Square Garden back in tbe late 70s. It's good to see people still appreciate thus music. There is nobody making this kind of music today as far as I can tell.
Beatles . . . Lennon did a song where he says "river of sound . . . mirror go round". The river of sound is on the cover of "Topographic Oceans" . . . the mirror go round is on the cover of "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor". (EGBDF (notes of the scale)). A little love tip there. It was a lot about love and true values in those days. Hope you like this.
I was born in 1955 and I DO feel lucky. You are also correct when you mention our disappointment in the later decades. I purchased around 1000 records between 1972 and 1980 (some were used). Over the twenty twenty years, I bought probably less then 50 albums. Not only was there less innovative music being produced, but the good stuff that was there got harder to find. Rock magazines and radio had moved on looking for the next "trend" and unfortunately, imaginative, intricate music began to take a bach seat to hot formulaic cookie cutter 3 to 5 min dance numbers and relatively easy to absorb sugary ballads. Not that there isn't some that were quite fine, but variation was becoming a bad thing in the music from the mid 80s on.
Same story here, tho I didn't have the ££ for 1,000 LPs - but buying petered out in the 80/90's... I thought good music and prog was dead. But it was still alive in the US, not the UK. Was searching for good music on the web c. 2010 and came across Mike Ostrich's "Prog Scape Radio" - a 3hr podcast showcasing major prog talent - and I didn't know 1/2 the bands! Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP etc there.. but so were Spock's Beard, Anthrax, Haji's Kitchen and 101 others. Mike still runs PS Radio as a monthly web podcast - lots of new stuff there and it's quality! For example, Radio Massacre International "Bettr Days" - a Syd Barrett tribute track (a new, Meddle-like might have been) through to Haji's Kitchen "Define the Lie" and much more. My intro to Kevin Gilbert! Well done Nick & Lex! More Yes to come I expect. If no-one has mentioned "Sound Chaser" that very much needs to go on the to-play list... :)

Thank you for posting this reaction video. I'm 69 so I was 19 when I bought this album (on 8-track - ask your parents) and saw Yes the next year performing most of this album. I was also into Genesis and other prog bands from that era. It's wonderful to know this music being embraced and appreciated by people your age. And thanks for playing the Steven Wilson remix. There is detail in the music that comes through that's missed in the original mix. Every generation deserves their own music and I won't criticize anyone's tastes but that was a different era. The proliferation of digital media coupled with the fragmentation of people's time make it very difficult to hold a listener's attention more than a few minutes. There is still music like this being released in the new century...Tool (Pneuma), Nightwish (The Greatest Show on Earth), Therion (Adulruna Rediviva), Dream Theater (Octavarium) to name a few...but it's hard to find it if you don't have someone to lead you there. My vote for most progressive band from the 70s is Gentle Giant. Check our "The Runaway" from In a Glass House. My vote for best Yes song, and it's more like a symphony, is "Gates of Delirium" from Relayer. I just discovered your channel so I'll be checking out other reactions. Thanks again.

I was lucky to see them as a youngster of 16. There was no problem snaking thru the crowd to the front and center and witnessing up close such a powerful tidal wave of music. 72’ was an amazing year for rock.
I was nineteen years old when this was released. As a very good drummer this just blew me away.... many years and many vinyl Yes records later this is my favourite.
I listened to this when it was new, but I envy you that you get to enjoy for the first time now. If it was great then, it's great now. Granted, you can't experience them live like I did back in the 70s. In that, I was very fortunate.
Yes is an example of a band where each member is a pure genious. Their talent is through the roof and undeniable, regardless of whether or not people enjoy listening to their music. I'm in my 50's and grew up with Yes. It's a shame how modern music seems to have lost the appreciation for musicians with inhuman talent who can play the instruments like this where you can destinctly hear each one. It's so great to see young people like yourselves enjoying it.
Sounds BETTER than music from right now. Their overall mastery has never been matched. Bands play faster, harder, with more technique, blah blah, but the compositional and aesthetic completion and organic quality of their work still rules.
My favorite Yes song! It is so overwhelming! So many different parts. My fave is when Steve Howe hits the strings above the nut (13:07 on your video)! Every musician plays their own tune and they all mesh beautifully. Oh and Bill Brufordddddddddd! Chris Squire zooming in and out! The lyrics make no sense but I don't care!!! And the guitar riffs going back and forth in the headphones!!! I'm dizzy!! Steve Howe is sick! Love the sighs...haha! And the end is like the Dolby test in movie theaters! Haha! Tony Kaye on keyboards Pre-Wakeman. He is great on earlier songs/albums like No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Required but he doesn't have the range Rick Wakeman had esp. on Close to the Edge. Come to think of it And You and I is a close second to Yours is No Disgrace!
Your comments about this particular piece of music being 50 years old, are spot-on. And I consider myself to be 'extremely fortunate' to have been born in 1947, and witnessed first-hand the birth of what is referred to as the 'prog-rock' era. And believe me when I say, that it was so SO much MORE than everything that's written about it. Living in the city of Bristol, UK, and coming from a musically active family, I played (Bass Guitar/Vocals) in a local band (Chequers), we were lucky to have been supporting acts to some of what are now 'big names' (The Who, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & Miracles, Ike & Tina Turner, Sam & Dave, Small Faces, Yardbirds, Byrds, Supertramp, Focus, John Mayal's Bluesbreakers, Colin Bluntstone, The Nice... etc, etc). Throughout the 70's, I was to see concerts with the exciting new bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELP, Cream, Led Zeppelin, and countless others who brought a completely new momentum to music. They were without doubt, good times... and it's really nice to reminisce and look back on an era that was so exciting musically. GJ
Great Choice, I saw Yes at the Rainbow Theatre 1971, they played this song 3 times as encores, can still hear the Guitars swiling around the venue...Outstanding.
I first heard Yes on KSHE 95 in St Louis while in high school in the early 70s. Heard Starship Trooper and this one first, and then Roundabout was on the radio for a solid 3-4 years, heavy rotation. That song STILL has legs 50 years later! Wow...50 years. Impossible to fathom that it's gone by that quickly! Days are long, but the years are short.
Back in the 70's I would go and see Yes whenever they came to my city which was usually rwice a year. You would leave a concert with your ears buzzing, your heart lifted and a grin from ear to ear! Great days.
Math rock geek’s dream! The main theme in 7/2 is repeated throughout the song, then the middle bridge has the guitar start a fast 7/8 figure, and then the rest of the band brings the 7/2 theme back in at the same time, so the two melodies come in and out of phase with each other. I can’t imagine playing it live, but they do it in concert! (A friend and I once tried humming the two parts together, but we just couldn’t do it!)
@@JohnBrooking4 not only do they DO it in concert, but this is one where I think the YesSongs version blows away the studio. I do dig the energy of the live Yours is No Disgrace as well, but something about Perpetual Change was made to be played live (whatever reservations one might have about Wakeman as a personality, he could rock the multi-keyboards). And of course "I've Seen All Good People" with the crowd going out of their tiny minds, but that's a much more crowd-participation song.
The Doors were really big and the Beatles were huge. There were all kinds of rumors about the Beatles. It was said Paul was dead and thats why he sang I am the Walrus, and there are flowers arranged like a left handed bass on the cover of Sgt. Pepper and paul is the only one barefoot on the cover of Abbey Road as supposedly people are buried without their shoes in Great Britain.
Hi guys, came across your reaction for The YES Album. Over 50 years ago my neighbour knocked on my door and said "you have to listen to this", from that moment my whole world, musically changed. Next day went out and got my own copy plus their first two albums, been to see them more time's that I care to remember, T shirts (most of which don't fit anymore but are treasured). Just listening to "Yours is no Disgrace", I still after over 50 years still get that buzz I first got then. Great show, shall check more of your reactions.
I saw Yes in concert in 1978. They played on a small revolving stage in the middle of the arena. I was sitting pretty close and got to experience them at the height of their early years. I'll never forget it.
Very lucky to see them live in their heyday back in the 70's, an experience I will never forget, they were simply awesome. I recommend checking out the triple live album 'Yessongs' where all these classics are taken to the next level. Great reaction of a fine band.

The artistry of Yes is impossible to describe and do justice. This is beyond a song; it is a true work of art.
Chris Squire sings harmony for so much of the songs that he’s more like a co-lead vocalist.
Yes! His vocals are so key live. He really stepped up his vocal during the Trevor Rabin Years. His bass playing so extraordinary everyone overlooks how great a vocalist he was. Hard to get recognition when singing with the likes of Jon Anderson.

@@markhavens1153 Bassists with outstanding vocal abilities really help propel a band to greatness. Of course Geddy Lee of Rush is a given, as he was principal vocalist. Supporting vocals is where Chris Squire of Yes and Kelly Groucutt of ELO really stood out fantastically.
Chris Squires is/was my favorite rock bassist, period! His baseline is always impeccable and gives such incredible and ingenious bottom to every song he plays.

In 1971 my friend played me this Album... it totally blew me away. What musicianship, absolute class and way ahead of its time. I immediately went out and bought it and I still have the vinyl to this very day.

I saw Yes in concert several times. The level of craftmanship, musicianship, and creativity is off the charts. There was no one like them out there. Never was and never will be. They're the Mozarts of rock. I've been listening 50 years. NEVER gets old. Never.

The bass line in this song is just amazing; RIP Chris Squire. The harmony is three singers. Steve Howe, just amazing. "Here I thought I knew about music" - by Nick. Even the drumming in this song is fantastic. There are soooo many great Yes songs and this is really close to the top. Many say CTTE is their best, or Gates or Awaken. I have trouble picking a favourite.
I found out about Yes when I was 10 years old when I heard 'Owner of a Lonely Heart' from 90125. Then in the years that followed I discovered all of their earlier records and I was just overwhelmed and amazed. I've been a big Yes fan ever since and am familiar with their entire discography. I'm really looking forward to whatever next Yes song you do; there are many to choose from.
Every song with Bill Bruford behind the kit has fantastic drumming.
@@MKE_Mike I’ll say the same about Alan White, he didn’t have the jazz chops that Bruford does but he was still a phenomenal rock drummer. When he was really turned loose on TFTO, Relayer, and GFTO he really started punching above what people thought his weight class was.
I’ve been listening to my favourite band for fifty years. As an experiment, try playing this very loud as you drive down a highway and see if you can control the accelerator. Impossible to drive slowly!. Watched them many times and actually roadied for them in the late seventies here in London. Fabulous band.

I bought the album as soon as I was next into town and couldn't wait to get home to hear the whole album. The memories today just from hearing this track. Music as in this case, is so timeless and wonderful. Imagine seeing them in the 70's live on stage ? - Their live album "YESSONGS" includes this track and it's note for note perfect. Yup. They do have a pretty similar vocal tone to one another which can make it sound like it is just Jon double tracking, but if you listen to Chris’ solo material you realize he is a little different and a great singer in his own right.
And Howe is sometimes joining in on harmonies as well!

I forgot how great this one is. It gets overshadowed by their bigger hits. And don't you always feel happy after listening to a Yes song? I do. And in this era, each Yes song was like 3 to 5 songs in one.

You could have a total YES Reaction channel and never get bored or run out of new discoveries. I discover new stuff everytime I listen to a song, even if I had heard it 100 times before, which I have for most Yes songs.
My son is 34 and I exposed him to YES at a young age! They became his favourite band in his mid teens. I took him, on his request, to their 35th Anniversary World Tour in the early noughties! He loved it!
I found the YES Album in my older sister's vinyl collection when i was 14 (I am 55 now). I was listening to not so great music and by the time the album was over, I was a prog head. I was literally brought to tears by what I was hearing and had not yet had a transcendent experience with music, but this album did that for me.
The reason this is so much fun for many of us watching is two-fold: a) you both are bursting with the joy of discovery at all the things we did 50 years ago hearing this when it was new, and b) you have no IDEA how quickly this band developed over their next two albums - and we do! Get ready and fasten your seat belts!
Yes is the most quintessential Prog band to ever exist. And this is coming from someone who was late to the Yes party, who also loves Rush, Genesis, Floyd, Jethro Tull, Kansas, Styx, ELP, Camel, King Crimson, as well as newer prog metal bands such as Dream Theater, Opeth, Tool, Haken, Devin Townsend, Porcupine Tree, etc. Keep up the great reactions guys!

Most of their early tracks are stunning with how they pull it off so masterfully in a live setting. Howe is especially awe inspiring.

rest of us had never heard of Yes. When I asked about him who they were
he gave me a pitying look but next day appeared with a cassette tape of the

The Yessongs version is infinitely better. The intro is out there and Steve’s Solo is awesome. And of course it’s Rick on the keys by that time!!
Yes improved these songs they. got better as they repeatedly played them live. Listen and compare to the YesSongs live version and you will see. I have always preferred the YesSongs versions to the studio albums even though the recording quality of that was poor. Also while I’m on my high horse please listen to the original vinyl versions. Much better than any digital remasters or remix versions.

yes were my dads favorite band.. he introduced me to them and i still remember beign sat in the car and listening to this song bouncing left to right... Seeing Rick in his cape surrounded by his keyboards.. or watching Jon Anderson just in his element makes me wonder what it would of been like to experience this music back when i was brand new..

In 1971 if I was listening to music that was 50 years old it would have Alexander’s Ragtime Band. I saw Yes in1974 at Madison Square Garden. They played all of Close to the Edge, took a break then came back and played all 4 sides of their new album Tales From Topographic Oceans. Wow.

I saw The Yes at The Apollo in Glasgow Scotland, doing this album in concert when I was 13. I took it with me into the Sahara on an MP3 where I lived for ten years. The nomad who heard this were stunned into silence and loved every note played, even though the speakers I had were tiny and tinny.

The reason the group YES was so incomparable , is : they were capable of playing things even more technically difficult than what they put out. They were rare talents as musicians.

I was lucky enough to hear this song played live in concert by Yes at Madison Square Garden back in tbe late 70s. It's good to see people still appreciate thus music. There is nobody making this kind of music today as far as I can tell.
Beatles . . . Lennon did a song where he says "river of sound . . . mirror go round". The river of sound is on the cover of "Topographic Oceans" . . . the mirror go round is on the cover of "Every Good Boy Deserves Favor". (EGBDF (notes of the scale)). A little love tip there. In '71 I was 16, and yes is still the music I'm listening now, and gladly sharing with you young ones, and it keeps me alive.
I was born in 1955 and I DO feel lucky. You are also correct when you mention our disappointment in the later decades. I purchased around 1000 records between 1972 and 1980 (some were used). Over the twenty twenty years, I bought probably less then 50 albums. Not only was there less innovative music being produced, but the good stuff that was there got harder to find. Rock magazines and radio had moved on looking for the next "trend" and unfortunately, imaginative, intricate music began to take a bach seat to hot formulaic cookie cutter 3 to 5 min dance numbers and relatively easy to absorb sugary ballads. Not that there isn't some that were quite fine, but variation was becoming a bad thing in the music from the mid 80s on.
Same story here, tho I didn't have the ££ for 1,000 LPs - but buying petered out in the 80/90's... I thought good music and prog was dead. But it was still alive in the US, not the UK.
Was searching for good music on the web c. 2010 and came across Mike Ostrich's "Prog Scape Radio" - a 3hr podcast showcasing major prog talent - and I didn't know 1/2 the bands! Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP etc there.. but so were Spock's Beard, Anthrax, Haji's Kitchen and 101 others. Mike still runs PS Radio as a monthly web podcast - lots of new stuff there and it's quality! For example, Radio Massacre International "Bettr Days" - a Syd Barrett tribute track (a new, Meddle-like might have been) through to Haji's Kitchen "Define the Lie" and much more. My intro to Kevin Gilbert!

Thank you for posting this reaction video. I'm 69 so I was 19 when I bought this album (on 8-track - ask your parents) and saw Yes the next year performing most of this album. I was also into Genesis and other prog bands from that era. It's wonderful to know this music being embraced and appreciated by people your age. And thanks for playing the Steven Wilson remix. There is detail in the music that comes through that's missed in the original mix. Every generation deserves their own music and I won't criticize anyone's tastes but that was a different era. The proliferation of digital media coupled with the fragmentation of people's time make it very difficult to hold a listener's attention more than a few minutes.
There is still music like this being released in the new century...Tool (Pneuma), Nightwish (The Greatest Show on Earth), Therion (Adulruna Rediviva), Dream Theater (Octavarium) to name a few...but it's hard to find it if you don't have someone to lead you there.
My vote for most progressive band from the 70s is Gentle Giant. Check our "The Runaway" from In a Glass House. My vote for best Yes song, and it's more like a symphony, is "Gates of Delirium" from Relayer.

I was lucky to see them as a youngster of 16. There was no problem snaking thru the crowd to the front and center and witnessing up close such a powerful tidal wave of music. 72’ was an amazing year for rock.
I was nineteen years old when this was released. As a very good drummer this just blew me away.... many years and many vinyl Yes records later this is my favourite.
Yes have so many songs where you could say "If this is the only song they ever made, it would be enough"...'Yours is no Disgrace' is no exception. ❤

I listened to this when it was new, but I envy you that you get to enjoy for the first time now. If it was great then, it's great now. Granted, you can't experience them live like I did back in the 70s. In that, I was very fortunate.
Yes is an example of a band where each member is a pure genious. Their talent is through the roof and undeniable, regardless of whether or not people enjoy listening to their music. I'm in my 50's and grew up with Yes. It's a shame how modern music seems to have lost the appreciation for musicians with inhuman talent who can play the instruments like this where you can destinctly hear each one. It's so great to see young people like yourselves enjoying it.
I think today's music is created to cater to the lowest denominator.

Sounds BETTER than music from right now. Their overall mastery has never been matched. Bands play faster, harder, with more technique, blah blah, but the compositional and aesthetic completion and organic quality of their work still rules.

My favorite Yes song! It is so overwhelming! So many different parts. My fave is when Steve Howe hits the strings above the nut (13:07 on your video)! Every musician plays their own tune and they all mesh beautifully. Oh and Bill Brufordddddddddd! Chris Squire zooming in and out! The lyrics make no sense but I don't care!!! And the guitar riffs going back and forth in the headphones!!! I'm dizzy!! Steve Howe is sick! Love the sighs...haha! And the end is like the Dolby test in movie theaters! Haha! Tony Kaye on keyboards Pre-Wakeman. He is great on earlier songs/albums like No Opportunity Necessary, No Experience Required but he doesn't have the range Rick Wakeman had esp. on Close to the Edge. Come to think of it And You and I is a close second to Yours is No Disgrace!
Your comments about this particular piece of music being 50 years old, are spot-on. And I consider myself to be 'extremely fortunate' to have been born in 1947, and witnessed first-hand the birth of what is referred to as the 'prog-rock' era. And believe me when I say, that it was so SO much MORE than everything that's written about it. Living in the city of Bristol, UK, and coming from a musically active family, I played (Bass Guitar/Vocals) in a local band (Chequers), we were lucky to have been supporting acts to some of what are now 'big names' (The Who, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Four Tops, Smokey Robinson & Miracles, Ike & Tina Turner, Sam & Dave, Small Faces, Yardbirds, Byrds, Supertramp, Focus, John Mayal's Bluesbreakers, Colin Bluntstone, The Nice... etc, etc). Throughout the 70's, I was to see concerts with the exciting new bands like Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELP, Cream, Led Zeppelin, and countless others who brought a completely new momentum to music.
They were without doubt, good times... and it's really nice to reminisce and look back on an era that was so exciting musically. GJ
Great Choice, I saw Yes at the Rainbow Theatre 1971, they played this song 3 times as encores, can still hear the Guitars swiling around the venue...Outstanding.
I first heard Yes on KSHE 95 in St Louis while in high school in the early 70s. Heard Starship Trooper and this one first, and then Roundabout was on the radio for a solid 3-4 years, heavy rotation. That song STILL has legs 50 years later! Wow...50 years. Impossible to fathom that it's gone by that quickly! Days are long, but the years are short.
Back in the 70's I would go and see Yes whenever they came to my city which was usually rwice a year. You would leave a concert with your ears buzzing, your heart lifted and a grin from ear to ear! Great days.
Perpetual Change is another gem on this album.
Math rock geek’s dream! The main theme in 7/2 is repeated throughout the song, then the middle bridge has the guitar start a fast 7/8 figure, and then the rest of the band brings the 7/2 theme back in at the same time, so the two melodies come in and out of phase with each other. I can’t imagine playing it live, but they do it in concert! (A friend and I once tried humming the two parts together, but we just couldn’t do it!)
@@JohnBrooking4 not only do they DO it in concert, but this is one where I think the YesSongs version blows away the studio. I do dig the energy of the live Yours is No Disgrace as well, but something about Perpetual Change was made to be played live (whatever reservations one might have about Wakeman as a personality, he could rock the multi-keyboards). And of course "I've Seen All Good People" with the crowd going out of their tiny minds, but that's a much more crowd-participation song.
The Doors were really big and the Beatles were huge. There were all kinds of rumors about the Beatles. It was said Paul was dead and thats why he sang I am the Walrus, and there are flowers arranged like a left handed bass on the cover of Sgt. Pepper and paul is the only one barefoot on the cover of Abbey Road as supposedly people are buried without their shoes in Great Britain.

Over 50 years ago my neighbour knocked on my door and said "you have to listen to this", from that moment my whole world, musically changed.
Next day went out and got my own copy plus their first two albums, been to see them more time's that I care to remember, T shirts (most of which don't fit anymore but are treasured).
Just listening to "Yours is no Disgrace", I still after over 50 years still get that buzz I first got then.

I saw Yes in concert in 1978. They played on a small revolving stage in the middle of the arena. I was sitting pretty close and got to experience them at the height of their early years. I'll never forget it.
I saw that show at Wembley and it was amazing. Like you, I was really close to the stage.
Very lucky to see them live in their heyday back in the 70's, an experience I will never forget, they were simply awesome. I recommend checking out the triple live album 'Yessongs' where all these classics are taken to the next level. Great reaction of a fine band.
I wore the record out in 1971 playing the last 30 seconds of this song over and over.
I absolutely love seeing young people have the chance to discover this music like I did. Kind of brought a tear of nostalgia to my eye
