You can hear the 40+ year old maturity and strength in her voice now. I dig it. She still sounds like herself but just matured in the bast of ways. I haven’t listened to an album of hers in a long time and I just listened to tidal, so very interesting to compare where she was to where she is now
She has said that the reason she likes the piano is that it’s percussive. She likes banging on it! She’s equated it to drummers take out their aggressions on drums. I’m a drummer and have always loved her drum tracks. Once I heard her explain that, I started listening from that perspective and it really explains how she writes and performs. And why I was always drawn to her music. This new album definitely shows her passion for percussion! Even being a fan, I had to experience this album a few times before I appreciated the genius of it. It’s different, she had some fun with it!
FFS sake lads. Don't judge an album by one song. The album is so incredibly percussive and the piano takes a back seat after the first 2 songs. It's like hearing the first song on side 2 of Sergeant Pepper and thinking, 'Oh my god, it's all Indian Music'.
you guys are musicians??? wow, close-minded ones apparently. maybe do a little homework on the artist. your analysis was very amateurish. i bet you could do better.
You should have reacted to the whole album. It’s quite a dense and idiosyncratic work. And this song, despite being good, doesn’t really represent the album as a whole. While people in general should stop obsessing with how critically acclaimed it is and stop focusing so much on her former 90s star status and embrace the album as is.
Cosmonauts is my fav of her new album.Every single night is just another one of her awesome songs. And a amazingly creative music video too, nothing I've heard from others
It’s not really experimental, it’s just her latest album. If you listen to all of her albums consecutively, you’ll be able to hear that she’s been building up to this sound. You can hear it on Idler.
@@sethskiles7262 Ladies too melodic for that. Title track good but too quiet and still. Additionally Relay has distinctly repetitive lyrics that Fiona uses first in her discography.
Fiona broke out big with her first album in the 90s as you said. And that song Criminal got played a lot and the video was played on MTV & VH1 a lot. Her first album was more in line with singer songwriter albums, although even on that one she'd do some weird things here and there; she'd add more dissonance than you'd expect on that kind of album for example. But her first album was really the only album of hers that acheived MAJOR success; at least in terms of the popularity of the singles. She's found some success with her other albums as well, but I don't think anywhere near the level of popularity as the first one. But she also doesn't churn albums out either; her second one was like in 99 I think, and then she didn't release another til about 2005, then 2012, and then just one this year. And I think she experiments more and more on each subsequent album. Her latest album isn't anywhere near being a traditional poppy songwriter album. This is the first song off it and its probably one of the more tame ones tbh. But even with this you see her playing around with dissonance and weird vocals etc. The rest of the album is heavy on percussion and is really kind of out there in a lot of ways. Its almost as if Frank Zappa decided to write a folksy jazz singer songwriter album. Idk what you'd call it - Prog Folk?? lol It's def diffferent.
I haven't listened to her new album yet. It seems like you weren't sure what to make of this track. If you're not familiar with Fiona Apple I can see how it might leave you feeling a bit confused.
That bunny was feeling the music
Even he can tell this is phenomenal.

There’s reason why the title doesn’t say successful musicians though…

We'll maybe include another song from the album when we do some suggestion episodes. A song each makes the most sense for us format wise at the moment
@@MichaelMcCabe43 Newspaper or Heavy Balloon are good examples of the more aggressive, visceral side of the album.
I think I hate your douchey nature
Easily her most experimental album, and this is probably the most "normal" song on it.

React to the whole album!
Shoulda done paper bag, do the more accessible early shit before jumping to the most recent most experimental project of hers

The most representing song of that album is Relay.
i disagree i would say either ladies or the title track
