the entire record was recorded in her living room (hence the dogs in the background and rough sound overall) and amazingly produced entirely in Garageband using random household objects to create the percussion. she's an absolute genius and one of the greatest talents to come from the 90s.
Glad you liked this one! Fiona Apple is one of my absolute favorite vocalists and has grown to be one of my favorite artists of all time. When the Pawn... is an incredible singer-songwriter jazz-fusion album, would love to hear your thoughts on it if you get to it.
I consider WTP to be more trip-hop and alt-pop infused. All her albums have elements of jazz. It’s typically the other elements she uses that differentiates them from each other sonically. For example, this album has more blues and punk elements than any of her other albums. Extraordinary Machine has more baroque pop. The Idler Wheel is more folk-like and stripped down jazz. When the Pawn has more hip-hop and alt-pop.
“Newspaper” might be my favorite song in Fiona’s discography. The way it builds tension and menace throughout and the catharsis at the end- it’s just fantastic. Though it did take me a few weeks to really appreciate it because it’s a very “uncomfortable” track and almost impossible to sink into on the first couple listens. Anyways, this is perhaps the best album of the last several years at least: very bold, challenging, chilling, intimate yet epic stuff. Despite its extreme acclaim, there are fans who don’t appreciate it, but for me it’s almost the exact album I wanted from her. You can’t really stick a genre to it, but I like to call it punk-blues-free jazz. Although ‘Fetch the Bolt Cutters’ might be Fiona’s magnum opus, I find ‘The Idler Wheel’ and ‘When The Pawn’ to be great records as well. While ‘Extraordinary Machine’ is a very good transitional album and has some of her best tracks. Fiona definitely has a discography worth diving into. Her acclaim and her influence on many modern artists can hardly be understated.
For Her hits hard, and that was an appropriate reaction. Hugs ❤️ It's the story of a friend, who was raped by her boss after he did drugs and then apparently had no memory of it. Fiona herself was raped at 12 or 13, accosted outside of her apartment. So it was for her, too. She wrote "evil is a relay sport" in her journal at like age 14 or 15. Look for the 2 Vulture articles for this album. She goes into each song into detail.
Yoo. Check out her album The Idler Wheel. Her best album imo. Emotional, playful, and EVERY single part of it is great (vocals, vocal phrasing, lyrics, melodies, instrumental choices, groove, songwriting, chord progressions, production, harmonies, etc).
I would love for Fiona to do a Tiny Desk. But she doesn’t like promoting and doesn’t have social media. Hell, she claimed she was asleep when she won her couple Grammys for this album. She did say that she still plans on touring for this album. But I wouldn’t count on it. As someone has mentioned she did perform the first few songs of the album for a quarantine-based festival. It shouldn’t be difficult to find on UA-cam.
13:41 - It really surprises me that her and Tricky never did any collabs. They both like evocative minimalism with eccentric instrumental tangents and Sleep To Dream felt like an American blues version of trip-hop.
The lyrical wordplay and instrumental unpredictability on this album are on another level, I find myself picking a new favourite song, lyric and moment every time I re-listen to it
5:29 - That vocal drift she's doing... I wonder if that's something that influenced IAMDDB (I can already hear 'IAMDDB... you already know...' popping up in my head).
i first heard this album a couple months ago and it was gorgeous from start to end. i was drawn in as soon as i heard i want you to love me, and i actually also had an advisor named Shameika that encouraged me to become more involved at school and so the song really hit home for me as well.
I believe several of these songs, particularly Newspaper, are about her relationship with a movie director who left her for Maya Rudolph. She doesn't say that, but it fits. Also the "won't shut up" song. I don't think Ladies is sad. She wants these ladies who are now in relationships with her exes to be friendly with her instead of antagonistic. Perhaps it is sad that she can't convince them to come around to her point of view, but Fiona herself is just wanting to not be on bad terms with someone just because they're dating one of her exes.
Have you read her interviews? 🤣 It seemed obvious to me. "And you're wearing time like a flowery crown, sitting that big cat down" Married for a long time, making Mr. Fancy Pants settle down.
@@sidhedanu Fiona and PTA broke up a few years before he met Maya. He cheated on her with another actress. While Fiona directly said that none of these songs are about Maya. It’d be nice for y’all to not most assumptions as facts. Fiona has had a few relationships after PTA. Not everything she writes about him.
Source? Everything I have read contradicts what you say. Especially that he cheated on her with Maya and then left her to marry Maya. That always seemed to be the inspiration behind Window to me. I also said it's my theory, not that it's gospel.

New subscriber here, very thorough and in depth. Fiona Apple is my all time favorite artist. Love her! Fiona is as important as Bjork and Kate Bush, just as creative and unique and individualistic. Look into PJ Harvey, early Tori Amos, more Fiona…., also GARBAGE & Goldfrapp
at least one of the songs on this album (relay) was influenced by the Brett Kavanuaugh hearings as well, she claimed that he let her anger see the light of day. I think another person in the comment section mentioned it but she goes in depth about the meaning behind every song in some articles which I think is really interesting if you want to look into it!
This is my favorite Fiona album. I didn't like it the first time, just sounded like random noise to me, but around the 7th or 8th listen it clicked and I reacted similarly to what you did here. But I HIGHLY recommend you watch the video to Criminal, from her first album released in 1996. One of the best videos of all time and was a big hit. She was marketed as a teen-pop singer then and the video was extremely controversial for its sexuality (but fairly normal by today's standards). She got more experimental with each successive album, but that's where it all began!
I wanna suggest Hey What by Low. may not be the best record for a reaction because it’s somewhat repetitive, slow, and the progressions can be somewhat subtle sometimes (other times it explodes tho), but most songs had me feeling like how you probably felt hearing Whatever I Want (Fuck Who’s Watching). Probably one of the best sounding albums I’ll ever hear. Some of the Sonic directions taken on this album are unlike anything I have heard or will ever hear

The Idler Wheel more difficult than FTBC.
@@brandingdesign6593 oh wow, interesting. I found The Idler Wheel to be more accessible, but also more rewarding.
This was the first (of four) 10s I’ve given this decade. Incredibly powerful album.

Dude i found her this year and her lyrics have made me feel so understood. When the pawn is literally gold
Truly a masterpiece. Arguably one of the best experimental albums of modern music…
For Her is such a fantastic song

When the pawn... is one of my all time favorites
Sling at the back, love that album
clairo slaps
I love the way you value this album like no one else :)
You should give her song “Never is a Promise” it’s one of my favorite by Fiona Apple. It’s from her debut album Tidal
I hope more Fiona reactions are coming.
The bassist is Sebastian Steinberg from the band Soul Coughing. Check them out!

Yeah, I'm sure she's still holding a grudge against him after over twenty years and that Hot Knife collaboration

The whole point of the album is to be unsettling. To have no regular resolution. Because that’s how she feels.
You got to react when the pawn
Shameika and For Her are next level tracks.

A few of these songs were performed live for an online event in 2020 or 2021. Very entertaining.

already listened to it so there won't be a reaction unfortunately
React to Perfume Genuis! Ugly season!!
I've already heard it. easily a top 5 aoty for me.
Fiona is great, each album better than the last.
You should try the Tori Amos album Little Earthquakes. Nothing quite like it
