everytime i listen to this i love it more. i love the lyrics "a sound is still a sound around no one" its a play on the "if a tree falls in the forest and no ones around, does it make a sound?" but my personal interpretation is that a lot of women are disregarded and seen as invisible but we're strong, intelligent, capable of anything regardless of if other people see it or acknowledge it :)
to me, it’s about how, as an atheist, we view our lives as objectively pointless as they aren’t permanent, and we are the only ones that can fully bear witness to everything we’ve live through, so once we die and all the people who knew us died, we get forgotten. but that’s okay, we still existed. our existence doesn’t need to be remembered, capsulated, or serve a higher purpose. it’s okay to simply have lived and tried to make that life as beautiful as possible without any specific purpose.
Her voice is so raw, gentle, hard, beautiful and unique. She can go through every possible emotion in just one song. She's a creative genius! A timeless classic!
Fiona's work has haunted me since childhood-- loved her work since Tidal. It's been amazing to watch her evolution as an artist. She's one of the few singers that I feel "gets it" when it comes to being a highly sensitive person in a bizarre and complex and magnificent world. And this song helped me to keep my focus on what was most important to me while under lock down-- my loved ones

The whole point of everything, of humanity, of civilization and art and life really doesn't get any simpler or more perfectly expressed than this: I want you to love me. It's why we wake up in the morning and drink coffee instead of blowing our brains out. I want you to love me, and I want to love me, and I want you to love you. As an atheist, it's just finding what is so important to you alone. It doesn't matter any other time or to anyone else, that's why you make it yourself. Some people can't handle this and turn to religion for answers, but to quote one of my favorite atheists ever: "If you need a purpose-driven life, you are an actor in someone else's play. You are following a script and it's not even a good one. If your life only has meaning when directed in someone else's movie, you have no life of your own."
My new favorite Fiona Apple song! What a progression in her song writing. Her past lovesongs allways came with a warning label against being too attached to her cracyness and an ambivalens to love. But here she is belting out that she wants somebody to love her and she is loved in return. Powerfull transformation when you have listened to her music since the beginning. Fi Fi 4ever❤❤❤
The lyrics here... when everyone we know is dead and gone she will be remembered for generations to come. When the dust settles, this album will be history.
I lost a platonic but soulmate like friend may of 2020. I knew him for only 2 months but we grew very close very fast, I had never had a friendship as delicious and understanding of each other. We joked about death and dying alot it was our morbid humor and our aching death wishes from the pains we didnt know how to heal that made our relating so parallel. We shared music and he sent me playlists of the music he had saved of music I turned him on to. Music was a big part of our Sharing and time together. Couple times when he show up he asked me if I had listen to Fiona's new album "heavy balloon reminds me of u".... We listened to cosmonauts and a few tracks. I didn't get to really listen to the album till after he was gone.... First time I heard this song it felt like it is was word for word a gift he wanted me to have.... The bounty of beauty he left trickled along the way for me after he was gone was art. Missing someone who I knew for what felt like just a moment held do much weight.... So much impact, so much depth, the kind you hope for in all potential relationships. I could go on all day about the magic of Patrick Day, and the cool coincidences that came along like meeting him in my favorite Park on St Patrick's Day, when I think about energy I want my life to feel like it's definitely a Patty laugh. I miss my friend but I just remember him and how he would respond to everything. I can shut my eyes and feel his air. I'm so thankful for the little bit I got. I move with the trees and the bees I know that time is elastic. And I know when I go all my particles to dispand and disperse and I be back in the pulse and I know none of this will matter in the long run, but I know a sound is still a sound around no one and while I'm in this body I want somebody to want and I want someone and I want you.....to love me. Get that fetus, kill that fetus
My eyes closed, focusing on the rough emotion in her voice and piano just feels like being in HEAVEN oh my god
Feels like a punch in the gut a lump in the throat and a warm embrace from a dear friend all at the same time... ya know, the old familiar feeling she captures so well in her music, that good hurt... dammit it Fiona if only you knew how much we indefinitely do love you!
Your voice and the piano are absolutely meant to be together ❤️
Anyone else been listening to this entire album on repeat every day since it came out?
About three times a day
Yes. Can’t wait to see her live. 🙌

Nice.
I adore this woman! I hope she sticks around for years to come. Her perspective is unparalleled.
I've been listening to the live version of this since 2013 and now the studio version is finally here. Mind blowing.
Album of the year period. A gift to get us through, every track is strong as usual with Fiona.
She is just too much. I think she is the best artist putting out music today. I mean the first 30 sec alone, I could never say enough.
Riff starting at 0:20 pays homage to Adrift and At Peace by Nine Inch Nails
Being a Maladaptive Daydreamer and hearing this part brings me into reality and start experiencing existential dread that I've wasted my whole life being the observer and narrative of fiction. This body doesn't belong to me. It hurts, loves, cries, tastes, and touches. 1:25 - 1:55
greatest love song ever written
I must say this entire album is gold. The story told through out and the sounds and transitions are just.... first time i was like "whaaat am i hearing" i only get excited when 2 artist have new music out and that's Radiohead and Fiona Apple. Love the album

Eight years sincie her last album. The timing of this couldn't be any better. We need more like Fiona Apple.
Thanks Fiona! You are a national treasure. Thank you for putting these out online on youtube; we are all going broke/bankrupt right now and this is like a national holiday/sonic parade from one of the best living artists that's keeping us all afloat right when we need it. It's a bad, bad, bad time and your artwork is really a bright, honest, meaningful an unforgettable contribution to this moment.
"Once more, with feeling" said no music teacher to her. Ever. Damn. A bolt to the spine.
This really could be the most amazing/ unique/ irritating:) /sensitive/ bizarre/ most need at this time/ lyrically and musically mind blowing album of the 21st century. Good God!
Wow. I had a huge Regina Spektor flashback while listening to her piano and singing style. Love this!
Exactly what I was thinking.
Give this woman every award possible for this song sheesh
Your Voice, that peculiar vibrato, that impressive and unique range... It's just delightful to listen to this music... Thank You, Ms. Fiona Apple! Timeless, since the very first time ever, almost 30 years ago..! Much LOVE!!
The best album we've heard the last two years, at least! Passionate, original, soulful, melancholic yet uplifting, there's no words to describe what masterpiece this is. Brilliant is an understatement! Thank you very much.
Fiona, your lyricisms hit harder, and burn brighter than any booze. Therapy for my calloused heart
I can not express how much I love this. So damned raw and beautiful. Perfect.

I'm so glad she released more music. She's crazy talented. Grew up on her in my teen years back in the late 90's/ early 00' s. I love her lyrics and that voice....
Wow, do you guys understand how intricate the music is on Every Track she records. It probably takes forever to arrange all of that talent.
