When I got my chinchilla,Ollie his previous owners were feeding him super cheap chinchilla food that had a bunch of the unhealthy treats in it and he hardly ever ate the actual pellets. I ended up switching him over to oxbow, after watching your videos and now he eats all his pellets all the time! I'm so beyond glad that you have this channel! It's been a HUGE help for me :)
VanillaChinchilla most of them like the taste of Oxbow (it smells sweet like chocolate, which helps a lot lol), but even ones that are very stubborn will eventually eat the oxbow if you only give them food and hay for a week or so (no treats at all for that time). They will act like they are starving for a couple days, so you can measure the amount of food out each day to be sure they are actually eating it (they will usually sneak it, and act like they are not eating it when you are watching). some are smarter (sneakier? LoL) than others, and will hide the pellets under hay or bedding, so look out for that.
@@vanillachinchilla5106 what I did, was I slowly transitioned him until he was out of the old stuff and now he eats all his pellets every day. Sometimes he eats more pellets than he eats hay! I've learned that hes not a huge fan of Timothy Hay, he LOVES alfalfa hay, so I think that's why he likes the pellets so much. Ollie hates sweets though, so that's what makes me laugh
Kristjona Daniels they make lots of other types of hay too. I have some chins (I have 14 lol) that won’t eat Timothy hay but love meadow grass, and some that like oat hay. I usually buy big bags of several and mix them every day. I also noticed when I switched from one brand of Timothy hay to another brand (American Diner brand-drs foster and smith sell it online and it’s much cheaper than the big pet store stuff) they liked that one better.

I just started getting Interested in chinchillas and I’m doing a ton of research rn, i just subscribed and hit the notification bell, I’m thinking I’ll do research for the next couple months and maybe I’ll get a chinchilla around Christmas. Thank you for this video😊, I’ll be watching a lot of your videos, btw your chinchilla is adorable! keep up the awesome 😎 chinchilla videos!
I’m relearning how to take care of chinchillas since I had one when I was in middle school and i was thinking of getting a pair. I feel so much guilt watching because I didn’t provide enough for him and now i know this. Although i was only 12 at the time and I’m 27 now, i feel like I should’ve had better judgement with my chin, i still feel like i made him more lonely than he already was, i’m glad he went off to a good home when I realized I couldn’t take care of him and he even met a partner and had chinchilla babies. He was so much better off in that home and now I’m much more aware and conscious of what I’m doing now to provide the best care for my new girls. Thank you for the humbling videos
I have two chinchillas, Sugar and Pepper, and the two cannot be separated. Sugar is a rescued and we think she's around 5 or 6 years old, and Pepper is a year old. We are about to redo the cage entirely, just to upgrade it and I've been looking at a few different setups. I'm in love with yours and your chinchilla! Also, we've been giving them WAY too many treats, so we are trying to cut down on those and add in more chew toys. New subscriber ❤
Ok I was looking at purchasing a chinchilla and this girl does an amazing job at explaining everything I needed to make my new pet a safe and happy pet. Thank you a bunch !
I have a 3 year old chinchilla named Walter. He has always been on his own so I brought two brothers to try and bond them all so he’s not alone. They don’t get along while they are out but their cages are next to each other and they will all talk together, something that Walter had never done when he was alone. So I think it’s definitely worth getting another chinchilla so they can socialise and it’s lovely to see even if it’s not in the same cage 😁
Molly Bennett Yeah, that’s why I’m considering getting another chinnie and of it doesn’t work to live together they can at least try besides each other to have that kind of social interaction😉
We always do our Christmas early but I just got a chinchilla for Christmas and I was absolutely clueless about how to get her tame and used to me but I've been watching your vids the past 2 days and I feel like she is already getting used to me so thank you, you are very helpful ❤❤❤
TY for the excellent information!! I've always wanted to house a chinchilla (don't want to say 'own') but needed to know what is best for THEM. I had to rehome my red slider because he deserved a better environment, my husband got him for my daughter & Simon became mine so I don't want to do that again. Luckily Simon won the turtle lottery w/his new home but my next friend is for life!! So I have to know the specifics. Thanks again!!
I’ve had my chins for over 5 months now and I’ve done so much research but still watching this to make sure I’m still doing everything right❤️ my chinnies go psycho at exactly 6:21 pm every night 😂 chins are SO smart and definitely can understand humans, but they DON’T listen to anything 😂
joe blanton Merlin poops anywhere he pleases (which is pretty much throughout the entire cage) and I have to sweep up the poop everyday. As far as pee, he mostly pees on the very bottom in the corner and it goes through the bars and onto some fabric I have below to catch it. If he pees on the fleece, which he does occasionally, it’s okay because I have an absorbent layer beneath and wash the fleece every week😉💕
When I first got my chinchilla I used to get him cheaper chinchilla pellets because I didn’t know what was best for him, but after taking him to the vet they recommended Oxbow and he loves it! I also just recently got him Oxbow Timothy Meadow Hay!

I’ve been struggling to find a good chinchilla wheel for my chinchilla, but I can’t afford a chin spin, could you maybe tell me how you made your homemade one? ❤️
As long as their cage is large enough and is filled with accessories that encourage running, jumping, and climbing, they do not need a wheel. Many breeders actually suggest against a wheel because chinchillas are very susceptible to heat stroke. Also, many times a chinchilla will become obsessed with running on a wheel to the point where they lose too must weight; however, you can still use a wheel if they are in a cool enough environment (72 degrees Fahrenheit or lower), and you make sure that they are not consistently running on it. If you decide a wheel is right for your chinchilla, make sure that it is 15" or larger, that it is not plastic, and has a solid bottom running surface.
Hi chinchilla notebook! I’m thinking about getting a chinchilla but t I have a question. I have no problem having the temperature at 60-70 but my mum won’t like that! Can I have the temp at 67-75 and have a little fan in the chinchillas cage or would that not be good?
I had a chinchilla when I was 5 or 6 years old and I'm thinking about getting another one but I kinda forget how to take care of them. It's been long since I've had one.
I wanted to know more about chinchillas and i watched this INTIRE video just to know more🤣. *i found out about chin chillas when i was gonna feed my guinea pigs timothy hay*
My Chinchilla only peed in hus hay. He never ate any of it. His friend didn't either. They were just weird that way. One super shy and never left his cage, the other was allowed to roam free as much as he wanted.
What kind of wood do you use for your chinchilla shelves and if possible my cage came with plastic shelves before I get my chinchilla I want to make sure his cage is safe. Am I able to cover the plastic with the fabric you use for your cage?
Micayla Snyder I recommend using kiln dried pine wood. It’s easy to get and easy to use but make sure when you buy the wood it needs to be kiln-dried pine wood and not fresh pine. The fresh pine has sap in the wood that is toxic to them. And if you can cover plastic with fleece and ensure your chinnie doesn’t get to it, it’s perfectly fine 😊
also do you think I should have a chcinchilla cage close to my hedgehog( not able to touch eachother) cage so they can have a different interaction besides me
Hi! My chinchilla is a bit timid and bites a lot, how do I gain her trust and make her feel more safe with me? She eats from my hand some times and I don't force her to do anything. She is much of a free roamer but at night she stays in her cage.
Sami Jacobson I just sewed two pieces of fleece together and stuffed it with fleece scraps and basically he just likes to play with it and move it around his cage. Sometimes he’ll sleep on it and its sooo cute when he does that!💕💕
Katie _41408 It’s up to you and what works best. Personally I’ve love fleece way more. I’ve tried both in the past and have found fleece to be easier to clean, neat, and all around better. But sometimes fleece doesn’t work for some people and that’s okay too😉
Do they make saucer “wheels” for chinchillas like they do hamsters? If they do it might be easier on their back o.o it would have to be wooden obviously and huge
I’m going to have my tortoise for another 35 years so I feel like the 15 years for a chinchilla is pretty acceptable lol

What kind of wood do you use for your chinchilla shelves and if possible my cage came with plastic shelves before I get my chinchilla I want to make sure his cage is safe. Am I able to cover the plastic with the fabric you use for your cage?
Micayla Snyder it’s best not to use plastic, if you are sure your chinchilla can’t get to the plastic then maybe, it depends if he or she is a chewer.
Do you have anywhere where you have links to the products you recommend?
also do you think I should have a chcinchilla cage close to my hedgehog( not able to touch eachother) cage so they can have a different interaction besides me
@zoo holic ok Thhank you for responding I won't but my hedghog has around 69.5 degrees and is that aceeptable for chins?
Hi! My chinchilla is a bit timid and bites a lot, how do I gain her trust and make her feel more safe with me? She eats from my hand some times and I don't force her to do anything. She is much of a free roamer but at night she stays in her cage.
do the ledges come with the cage or can you get them separately?
Separately.

how did you make your chins pillow and what does he do with it?
Sami Jacobson I just sewed two pieces of fleece together and stuffed it with fleece scraps and basically he just likes to play with it and move it around his cage. Sometimes he’ll sleep on it and its sooo cute when he does that!💕💕

I’m going to petco to see chinchillas tomorrow :)
Are we allowed to take them outside to play on the grass? :o
Daily_Tea Its best not to as domesticated chinchillas don’t have strong immune systems and are susceptible to many kinds of illnesses 💕
@@TheChinchillaNotebook Oh okay! Thank you! :)
I have a wooden rabbit hutch it has 3 layers
Hello! I have a quick question. Do chinchillas require pet insurance? If so, how expensive is it?
Would you recommend fleece or chinchilla bedding???
Katie _41408 It’s up to you and what works best. Personally I’ve love fleece way more. I’ve tried both in the past and have found fleece to be easier to clean, neat, and all around better. But sometimes fleece doesn’t work for some people and that’s okay too😉
I was wondering do you need to have a bigger habitat if you have two chinchillas, if so how much bigger?
Thank you for posting this vid! This really helped :3 tysm!
alien potato I have a UA-cam account about chinchillas you might find mine helpful too!
Do they make saucer “wheels” for chinchillas like they do hamsters? If they do it might be easier on their back o.o it would have to be wooden obviously and huge
I am thinking of getting a chinchilla for my daughter so I am seeing if a chinchilla is a good pet for our household
Also can we give them hamster bathing dust bc I can’t be bothered to get chinchilla dust
Me and my family are thinking about getting a Chinchilla and there is one thing I’m wondering how big does the cage have to be
I convinced my mom that when we move to Hawaii we can get Chinchillas so here I am doing hours of research 🤣🤣
