- Jessi takes Cayenne and Chili Pepper the Patagonian Cavies for a walk outside on 20' leashes. It's no easy feat to keep them calm and focused so they don't get tangled but also ensure a good time is had by all. Watch how they make it work!

Jessi, it gives me great satisfaction to see two maras, since they are one of the protected species that we have here in Patagonia. I admire you for your great interest and passion for wildlife. Best wishes from Patagonia Argentina.
These animals are lucky to be able to live in this beautiful place among people who take good care of them.
I agree with that
Omg!!! The Chinchilla in the same enclosure is so cool!
"They know that I deliver treats!" Oh, sounds like my cats! lol
They're adorable!!! I was inspired by you, Jessi, and I created a channel about animals! I've not uploaded any videos yet, but I am gonna upload one this week. Thanks, Jessi! 😊😊😊
Good luck, I’ll subscribe.
@@chickensandguineapigs669 Thanks for the support! 😊
@TheKitkat825 What is creature feature?
@TheKitkat825 Oh...ok
It's weird that they are called guinea pigs, as they are neither from Guinea, nor related to pigs. But these deer-like cousins of the guinea pigs are so different from other rodents, yet extremely similar in the essential ways. They look and act like deer-pig-rabbit-rats. Yet, their evolutionary lineage is closer to the rat than any of these other animals. Convergent evolution and physical distance (the Atlantic Ocean) drove them to become so different from your average rat.
I thought guinea pigs were well, guinea pigs.
I love when you take your animals on walks!
Jessi, I love the way you always promote animal enrichment!
That was a very pleasant walk! It's always nice to see the animals getting to enjoy the outdoors just as much as they enjoy their indoor habitats. I am consistently amazed and impressed by how hard you all work to take such wonderful care of your animals. Just wish more folks could (and would) do the same!
i have two guinea pigs at home, & it's interesting to see some of the similarities between my tiny cavies & their tall cousins! the cavy family is such an interesting bunch
And I love the birds to. I LOVE WHAT YOU DO FOR THE ANIMALS, I WOULD LOVE TO DO WHAT YOU DO .
The cavies are so adorable ...so glad they have a wonderful family to take care of them too:)
How cute!! Imagine driving down that road and seeing a woman walking 2 giant guinea pig/dog looking things haha I would think they were aliens.
I love to see how great care is given to all of your animals. All of u must work super hard each day. Love this channel 👍🏻
Looks like Bambie and Thumper had a baby
😆
Love the cavies!!! Giant friends
I have one myself. Milo is about 6 years old and he has been handled since he was a baby which is amazing. I showed him in 4-H for 4 years and won many different awards and ribbons! He loves his life here in Oregon!
That's also such a pretty area to be at in general! Mountains are always spectacular.
Basic training= learning human is a treat dispenser. I love that the Cavies are able to enjoy the beauty of fall like the rest of us! Do you have to worry about cars when you walk them along the road? Or is it quiet enough to know what times of the day no one will be coming?
I always love patagonian cavies! 😊❤
And I understand now that they're not domesticated animals.
Gorgeous video and the best video I've ever seen of Patagonian cavies up close. Very cool mammals.
They look so much like bunnies, over which I obsess!
Love seeing the maras (^^♪
Glad to see chili pepper doing well and that him and cayanne got to liking each other!

Love me some cute cavies! Also..EVELYN!!
thank you
They're like burro-bunnies 🐎🐇
I love animals
great video !!! I am 14 years old and me and my friends want to rescue birds around the city but I am not ready to start a organisation. I have taken care of few dozens of birds of a couple of species but my experience is only up to birds from pet stores.... can you give me any suggestion to be a bit successful in my attempt?
I love your passion! I would recommend volunteering at already established animal facilities that rescue birds because there is always so much to do. You'll be directly helping the birds and you'll be building your skills with experience. Then, when you're ready, you'll have years of knowledge built up to really make your organization thrive! Thank you so much for loving the birds!
@@animalwondersmontana I thought of that idea, but due to the covid virus my city has been marked as a red zone, and thus all the rescues and shelters have to closed to public, they do not even adopt or take in new animals in this time.
We have no chance of getting any physical exposure, and me and my friend are not sure whether this will work out life long. I've always had a passion for birds... Few years ago when I was growing finches (37 of them) I just thought finches were awesome, that time a nest of an Indian ringneck fell from the tree, there were 6 baby birds (fledgling) but their mum died, people in my locality thought of giving it to me hoping that it gets a good home but unfortunately I didn't get it. In a year I learnt that parrots are so unique...
If I decide to rescue birds in the city ( ther are mainly pigeons, crows, ravens, mynahs and few more) what bird is the best to start, I can wait for long enough to find a bird you suggest and I am ready to help any in need
@@gunasundariganeshbabu7169 even though you can't go volunteer in person right now, contacting them via phone or email might still be a good idea. They would have a better idea about the local needs and ways you can help on your own.
@@sarahstardust thank you Sarah for that suggestion. But unfortunately rescue services in India don't work like that. They call themselves non profit organizations yet the money given to them as donation are not being used for the purpose and the money goes directly to their pockets. And if we call them and ask for suggestions, they say us not to rescue animals ourselves but give the animal directly to them
I imagine long leash walking is a real mental workout and juggling act. Hats off to you Jessi!
They're just. Guinea pig bunny dogs. I love them so much.
They're a species I've never heard of obviously. They're like a pair of *Not A Capybaras*
They are relatives of the capybara and guinea pig

We own 4 maras and this gave me some great training ideas! Thank you so much!
Also, are there any specific harnesses you recommend? We have used a few that work well but I really love the fit of the ones you have.
Cavies are like ever-grown capabaras
Hey Jessi, I am watching your videos for a while and I am writing my first question to you . I love animals a lot and I can not live without one of my own . We have decided that we are going to have a dog, but its my first time so I know that you posted some videos of the dogs but I want you to post some more just because I know some more about dogs and it would be really nice if you posted some more videos and made a play list of all of them . THANKS JESSI
You're an excellent and enthusiastic teacher! 👍
How are Cavies different from Capybaras?
So that's what blue skies look like. We here in WA state have not seen beautiful skies like that in who knows how long 💨💨
Clear sunny skies today in Olympia, Washington :)
I love ur voice mam, it feels like asmr
What a fun afternoon!
I was wondering if you have a any pikas at animal wonders Im really interested in them and think they are very interesting animals. Theres not much information on them and I was wondering if you could do a video about them.
I LOVE THE CAVIES!!!
hi! I’m also called Mara and will fist-bump you in exchange for treats.
It’s so nice to see these two out and about.
Didn’t even know about this type of animal until now 😭😭 from the thumbnail I thought that they were hares.
Hi How come you don’t use retractable leashes?
I wonder if using one leash with 2 3 foot splitters at the end would be easier. I have my dogs on a Y rig and it keeps them well controlled while still having fun.
Thanks for thinking about it! Your suggestion wouldn't work in this situation since I couldn't use slight pressure from the leash to communicate to just one of them at a time. And if one took off running the other would get yanked on and both could end up seriously hurt. I've seen the Y method work with dogs, but cavies are a very different challenge 🙂
Which harness do you use?
Hey, me and my friends have decided to take courses for avain vet, animal training and ornithology. Will we be able to run a organisation like yours?
Hi to everyone at Animal Wonders!
Your mara are so fun to watch! They seem very friendly and interactive, and a lot like their little cousins, guinea pigs. I know they are wild animals and not pets, but do you think mara overall would be a good candidate for domestication? Or are your two just particularly calm, outgoing, and well-socialized individuals?
What do you recommend about a retractable leash?
They are both so cute!!!!
I've never heard of or seen these things before. Like a kangaroo deer.
They're related to guinea pigs and capybaras 😊. They're cute, yeah?
@@sarahstardust ooh the capybara!
How do you keep a puppy from jumping
Sad question but if one of them passes away would the other one be okay? Would you get another one to ease the loss?
We'll have to assess the situation and make those kinds of decisions depending on what the whole picture is. We've definitely seen that Chili Pepper has a much better life with a companion, so that would playa big factor in how we moved forward. But we have to keep in mind that it's not a straight forward easy thing to just get a new animal as a companion and having everything work out perfectly every time, so lots of thought and due diligence has to go into every choice that's made.
TREATS TREATS TREATS GALORE!!!!!!!!!!
Distant relatives of my guinea pigs
🖤🖤
I'm curious why you don't use retractable leashes. They really help me keep the leash from tangling around my dogs' legs.
Thanks for asking! Retractable leashes may sound like a good idea for keeping the leash from drooping and being stepped over. However, they can be dangerous and counter productive when trying to teach leash etiquette. I want the cavies to stop when they feel pressure on the leash and feel free to move forward when the leash is slack. With retractable leashes they are taught to pull harder when they feel the pressure because that's how they pull the leash out of its spool, they often never feel slack since the cord spools back up. Feeling pressure on their chest from the harness because the leash is pulled tight all the time would also make a wild animal, especially a prey animal like a cavy, would make them very nervous and the walk wouldn't be enjoyable. Retractable leashes are dangerous because it's so easy for them to get stuck or malfunction. If I used them with the cavies and this happened then I have a very dangerous situation where a long thin cord is not able to be quickly wrapped up and out of harms way. On the other hand, when I use the flat 20' leash looped over my hand, if one of the cavies does get a leg tangled I can quickly drop a loop and immediately give them more slack to get untangled or bide a few seconds of time for me to call them to me or walk to them and adjust the leash. I hope that makes sense in text.
@@animalwondersmontana that makes a lot of sense, thanks! I've only ever dealt with domesticated predators, dogs and cats, so I didn't think about how a wild prey animal would feel about the pressure or occasional jams of a retractable leash.
@@SpeakShibboleth also the thin cord would be easy to bite through, lots of the animals there could probably bite through a cord of the size a retractable leash uses in seconds.
Cute looking capybaras
Hello. We would like to send a ups/fedex package to you as the usps quotes us almost 80$. Do you have an address we can send to?
Are they making that sort of..."purring" or "thrumming" sound I keep hearing? Does that mean they're happy?
I wondered that too
They do purr! It's one of their vocal communications and in this context qith the gentle tone and volume it means they're happy. They can also use a louder more forceful version as a way to communicate their upset or aggressive.
I normally watch you on epic
During the Hreat Mammal War, the Cavilry was key to winning!
ive been wondering to have a cavie🙂
Are these critters purring like cats, or am I just hearing things?
Am I hearing little cavie communication grumbles?
Yes, isn't it adorable!? Happy cavies 😊
they jump like a kangroo
Hay Jessi, who was the little black critter following behind you?
That's our tiny pup, Tinker. She loves joining in on any walk with any animal 😁
@@animalwondersmontana. I could not see her well enough to tell. She was quite a ways behind you, like my cats used to do when I went for a walk.
Jessi, have you ever had to defend animals from Animal Wonders from predators? How would you do that? I know it's not good with wild animals of course.
I need more context to be able to answer this. Are you asking if while on a walk outside another animal tried to go after one of ours? Or are you asking if wild animals have ever tried to get into one of the animal enclosures?
They look like capybaras 🤔
Can u take in my wallabie?
Oh, look at these bouncing cuties!

Are they rodents or ungulates? They look kind of like small land based capybaras...front feet are not cloven... I'm guessing they are rodents...
Confirmed rodents
Do they taste like 🐇???
