I often tell people that keeping a parrot is similar to having a child in that you need at least a rudimentary support system to help you care for them effectively. I always tell people to join online forums and groups dedicated to keeping parrots (including species-specific ones) so that they can always get advice and support from other parrot owners. And also to look into their local avian vet, aviculture specialists, bird behaviorists, and parrot-specific shelters to see what kind of support services they might offer (e.g. boarding, emergency medical care, assistance recovering lost or stolen birds, classes and seminars on training and enrichment, etc).
Congrats on your new Grey! Romeo is so beautiful and healthy looking! I've been living with a Grey named Smokey for the past 30 years. She's a cuddle bug and loves to be held and cradled like a baby. She's a great talker and mimic too. I'm 56 now, and am so worried about what will happen to her if anything every happens to me. I don't have anyone in my family who I trust to take proper care of her. People don't understand how much work goes into keeping a bird safe; no paint, no fumes, no cooking with no stick frying pans or self cleaning ovens, no toxic house cleaning supplies, etc.
BirdTricks (another UA-cam channel) has at least one video on how to make provisions for your bird if you can no longer care for them. Apparently a lot of owners leave financial bequests for the bird's care in their will, for example. If this is something you're worried about, you might find the video worth a look. Though at 56, you'll (hopefully!) have at least another 20 years with her yet.
Wow, I didn’t know about these allergies that pop up so frequently in bird owners. Your responsability in caring for these animals never cease to amaze me
It is more common in birds with powder based feathers (think cockatiels and African gray). They make a very fine white dust that can irritate with asthma or stuff, people Other parrots have oil based feathers. The difference is in how they waterproof their feathers. They use different types of oil that make different types of dandruff.
While "pigeon fancier's lung" is pretty commonly known, any dry-climate bird is going to have dander. If you're keeping a bird indoors, it may be better to research wet-climate birds or invest in a high-end air purifier.
I've heard that the same can happen to beekeepers! They get stung so much relative to the average person that it's not uncommon to develop an allergy. Which is a real bummer since anyone who goes into working with bees usually loves them a lot
I absolutely love how gentle you are with your animals, and how respectful you are of their boundaries. I definitely inspires me to be like that too with my birds and it really works, I never get bitten by them.
What a little boy! I also very much appreciate your candidness in regards to taking new animals in. As much as a person might want to help every animal in need, noone has infinite time or resources. We can only do what we can.
Romeo is absolutely stunning! Thanks for sharing his story - I love how honest you are with your experiences with rehoming and tricky situations (him not getting off of your leg!)
He's a lucky boy to have found such a good home. One of the vets I worked for kept an AG in the practice. He loved to perch near reception and watch the other animals come in. When he was feeling naughty he would bark at a cat going by. To distract him from that sort of thing, we'd start singing Row, Row, Row Your Boat to him LOL. The clients loved him.
How's his grip when holding objects or larger bits of food or something? I know when one of the birds I was looking after didn't have the best grip strength (she's missing a toe from when she was at a previous owner's place), we introduced bits of food that weren't too big but were still big enough she'd rather hold it than eat it from her bowl or something. Within a few weeks, that seemed to help her recover at least to the point of being comfortable on fingers
Amazing! I had a cockatiel growing up that would call for my dog. He would run into the room and get angry there wasn't a human with treats there. My pionus now is a quiet guy who just likes to hangout.
Awwwww so adorable! You are awesome! You're always helping animals in need🙂 i would like to see a video on parrots "bluffing" and what to do. Im currently on that stage with my young ringneck and oohhhhhh my gosh his bites HURT!
Always glad to see more education about African Greys! I have a similar problem with my rescue Grey, she loves the floor and will not step up on my hand, but has no problem hanging out on my lap. Can't wait for updates!
So excited to see an African Grey join the flock. Some general feature, or perhaps behind the scenes training sessions would be lovely. Maybe an instagram account, I love the Zeema content so much. Absolutely loving the content lately!
I knew an African Grey once who didn't say much (it had been abused when it was young) but she could still do a perfect imitation of a car alarm (with the sunrise 😂), door slamming, zipping a coat, saying hello, barking, and meowing.
Can you please do a video on the difference between oil based feathers and powder based feathers. I know that powder based birds like cockatiels (and African Grays I think) can bother people with asthma.
What a lovely boy! I would love to hear more if his vocalisations, I always think they're so interesting! My great grandparents had an African grey who learnt how to call my grandparents dog, sending her running down their corridor whenever he wanted 😆 Can't wait to see more of him!
Yay! Romeo is looking and sounding great! Are the birds at Animal Wonders flighted? When you have them outside they aren't on a harness or anything, but I know that you work to strengthen their muscles when you rescue them and they can't fly.
Aren’t CAGs the best? They’re so amazing! I wish I could have a CAG and maybe in the future I could care for my own when I can provide the proper care, but for now I have a lovely budgie named Sokar (Sugar in Arabic) and he’s absolutely adorable 🥺❤️
Ever since I learned about Alex the African Grey, I've been so curious about this species. They're amazing! I look forward to future videos of our buddy Romeo.
Going for a stroll seems to be an African Grey thing! My local pet store has a rescue one, he pretty much has free reign of the store (well supervised, even by regular customers like me). He loves going for a trot around his perches, and it's not uncommon to here him say hi from the floor to get your attention XD
You’re not worried about him as a new bird outdoors and fully flighted? He seems happy to be hanging out near you! I also don’t clip my birds wings but I was wondering how you’re able to already trust him outdoors. Thanks!
It really sounds like every bird you rescue had a poor diet in their previous home. How can this happen so often? Is it just that appropriate diets are expensive, or people just not knowing what do feed their birds? Anyways, I am really excited to finally get to see Romeo! African Greys are just marvellous, and I can't wait to see him again once he's become more comfortable around you. He'll be such a fun guy at public presentations.
It's both of the reasons you suggested. A proper diet involves fresh fruit and vegetables, and that can add up in cost. Also, there is so much misinformation out there. Tons of people try to feed a majority seed diet. If you're interested in birds in particular, I would highly suggest Bird Tricks. AnimalWonders actually did a video with them once! :)
Not meant as a suggestion, but perhaps you might be interested in the article in the link: www.bl.uk/the-language-of-birds/articles/alex-the-african-grey-parrot Best of luck with Romeo, I know he could not have landed in a better place! :)
Can't wait to see how training goes with Romeo! Maybe he's afraid of going on your hand cause it doesn't look wide enough to him? Would giving him the option of stepping up on a perch the same diameter of your finger be an option, or is it too narrow without having a thumb there to secure his foot? Just thinking if he gets the confidence to do that, then your hand may not be as scary, or perhaps even better.
My god they are gorgeous creatures. My nan used to have one and he was quite vicious and plucked his feathers out, I've no clue why he was so stressed but eventually he flew away. :(
Romeo is a beautiful bird! I don't really know anything about birds but it looks like one of his rear toes wasn't always sitting behind his perch but kinda laid on top. Not sure if that's just what happens when African Greys move though! How confident is he flying? Do you think he'd be braver about perching on your hand if he was more confident in flying? Have you found his favourite treat yet? 🥰
Wow first comment haha :) HELLO ANIMAL WONDERS! Love your videos, am studying to be a vet and I find your videos very useful! I have also though due to own research haha got a pied pearl cockatiel last week! An absolute sweetheart!! My mum also loves African greys, if you could reply to this comment it would mean a lot! Thank you!!
Hi animal wonders! I hope you can read this comment, as I'm in a bit of a pickle. I've gotten so stressed and worried about ABV because we plan to start a breeding buisness next year or in a few years. And I would definitely feel guilty if I raised parrots like these. I've always thought that birds carried the disease their whole life once they get it. But I think I heard you mention in the video that 'Romeo (The African grey) was infected with the virus at some point in his life, and right now he shows no signs of PDD, so his immune response to the virus went well." If I'm understanding correctly, he is immune to the virus? Like his immune system knows how to fight it off? I've done a bit of research on this virus and never knew this. Would this mean that it's safe to breed birds just like Romeo? Last question, what lab do you guys use to test for ABV? The lab I was recommended doesn't seem to be good. Thanks guys! Romeo is adorable!!!
ABV and PDD aren't the same thing. ABV is a virus that is super contagious between parrots and once they have it they always have it. Some parrots have a normal immune response to the virus and are able to continue living a normal life. While other parrots have an abnormal immune response to the virus and they develop PDD. Those who get PDD don't recover, but some can live longer with supportive care. All of our parrot type birds test positive for ABV but none of them show any signs of having PDD. We have had a few birds pass away from symptoms of PDD in the past, though we were never able to get confirmation that's what it was (the lab we sent them to messed up). I don't have a lab recommendation at the moment.
I remember teaching a skittish gray to target training I figured with him being so skittish it would take a while but no 1 minute and it was his favorite activity
Hi.. Thank you for the helpful info. I need help with a pink Australian cockatiel. She is about 5 years old. I got from my mom. My mom has bad lung issues and she had 4 big birds. Causing her to get very sick. We ended up giving the birds away to family. I have Daisy a pink cockatiel. And I really want to be a good owner. Can you tell me what these birds are about? What they eat? How to train them? And more helpful information.. PLEASE help.. I love this bird and I want to give her a good life..
He is so sweet. I wish people would leave animals in the wild and not make them pets. It's not good for most animals emotionally to be housed the way they are. I hope the best for this handsome guy.
Who is stronger? leopard or jaguar? (Jaguar I guess but I still want to confirm. Plus leopard is a lot stronger than we think and also very aggressive)

AnimalWonders Montana hi
Fully flighted, still prefers to walk around the floor? Sounds like every grey I know! What a cutie!
Floor shark!
Maybe they wanna fit in with the rest of the flock since we have serious short comings in the self propelled flight department...
@@howHumam Many rescue birds do and the flock at Animal Wonders are all true rescues.
African Greys are partial ground feeders; only natural to expect them to visit the floor!
@@SeabassFishbrains that's the perfect description!
