Honestly, if your gaming, I'd stay away from this considering there are cheaper OLEDs out there that still surpass this display and have decent brightness (like the G3/C4). I personally bought the QM851G thinking it'd be great consider all I've heard, but in gaming mode I just couldn't stand the black crush in local dimming high. And it's only other options are local dimming low and off (and both look horrible in dark scenes just due to almost no use [or none in off] of the dimming zones). Not to mention, at least in game mode, the TV has really bad color banding on dark colors. I tried Vivid picture mode with ALLM (there's a sort of hacky way you can get both so you have decent input latency with decent picture) and it fixed the black crush mostly, but did nothing for the color banding and motion clarity. I just think the other TV brands have much better processing for lower quality content and for color gradation. And another thing... the motion on the QM851G is god awful. Lots of smearing and ghosting which no one wants during gaming. Bravia 9 (my replacement display) has almost none of that on a similar VA Panel tech stack, but obviously is way more expensive. Only two things I think the Bravia 9 still does pretty poorly is BFI and VRR (although it's not terrible). That may be a flaw in VA Panels, but it ghosts pretty badly on both settings. I do think if they ever improve processors to even faster chips it may be solvable at 120Hz, but not sure. So realistically, if it were me and I was gaming, and money was an object... I'd just go for OLED, due to better motion clarity and still amazing picture for game mode. Thing is, imho, I just don't find most VA LED panels to have acceptable motion clarity and picture quality for the price. Maybe I'm just too strict, but I really prefer deep blacks, good shadow detail, good color saturation (while still having color detail visible), and good motion clarity. If I can't get all of these in one package, I kind of feel like the TV shouldn't even be $1000 at that point, especially at this point when so many other panels that for a couple 100 dollars more do all of this (and more some times).

I have the 98" version of this TV. Most of this review seems to hold true for it as well. I haven't had issues with VRR tearing or input lag, though. Also, EOTF tracking and 24Hz playback latency is much better in game mode, so I've been using it even for movies/TV. Currently on the 097 firmware.
My 85 B9 is amazing with no DSE it’s needed a little bit of a break in and rub down but that is my number one problem is DSE and Blooming. Man did I get lucky because it’s amazing
My 75 inch Bravia 9 has no DSE. I gave it 4 weeks of use/break-in before finally checking yesterday and there was no DSE. It’s as close to oled as a mini led can get.
Great review , also of the U8N you did previously . In comparing brightness to the U8N you state that the QM851 is brighter , but show that the U8N gets to to 3691 nits @ 10% , while the QM851 gets up to 3467 nits . Nitpicking aside (😂) , which one is truly brighter ? I have the U8K 75" with ADS Pro Panel and am mesmerized , but I may consider the QM851 or U8N for another room .
We bought the 2023 55" C805K in the UK from Amazon which is a QD-Mini LED model. Whilst the picture quality was crazy good, the implementation of Google TV was truly dreadful - not responding to the remote half the time and forcing multiple hard resets before we sent the TV back to the retailer. TCL's support were also really poor and pushed back against the return. I would not recommend any TCL TV regardless of the series and buy Hisense or Samsung instead.
Hello can you tell me if the nintendo switch would look on this tv? Also whats a good distance to sit in front of this one? I usually have 43" tvs but this is only aviable in 50" so i'm not sure.. Also, i watch movies only connected to my pc on the tv (these movies are downloaded and 1080p quality) would they look good too?
I have a the first gen TCL 8 series tv (75 inch) and I love it, the issue that I have is when you plug Apple tv to it, certain movies, you get weird artificing in certain scenes, with certain Dolby vision settings (like a scene will drop to 1080 broadcast tv quality and no upscaling for no reason and it happens the same scene it certain movies every time, but I don't' have that issue with a Roku Streaming Box) and the Dolby Vision flickers in certain scenes as wel, It looks like it will flicker between dolby vision and HDR through a series of scenes and then stop, its always the same ones each time it happens, its noticeable enough that my next tv I don't think will be TCL, I can't get a direct answer from them, but see a lot of complaints in the forums about the same issue and they never have addressed the complaints.

You said the VRR motion bugs seem to happen at 65hz, does that mean at that mark or above and below 65? If it’s below, that’s the golden range for 40-60 fps for consoles so it’s pretty much a no go as a gaming TV. At 65hz, it would affect frame rate unlocked games that push over 60hz. Still a pretty significant issue that almost negates the benefits of VRR over a locked mode. Also when VRR fails to kick in, does the TV indicate that it’s falsely in VRR mode?
VRR still works down to 40Hz as far as I can tell. The issue they're referring to here is that the overdrive behavior changes at a specific refresh rate threshold (65Hz or so) rather than scaling with the refresh rate which would improve motion picture quality. Overdrive is used on all LCD displays to compensate for pixel transition times. It primarily impacts the leading and trailing edges of moving content. Bad overdrive can lead to smeary looking edges while good overdrive keeps things looking sharp in motion. At a fixed refresh rate, it's pretty easy to manage, but with variable refresh rates, it can be tricky. I'm a PC guy, so I'm usually running 90+ fps on anything whenever possible. This TV looks great at those above 60Hz frequencies, but when it dips it can cause some mostly minor problems as illustrated in the video. If you're a console gamer, running a fixed refresh rate of 60Hz for games that only run at 30/60fps may be better. For 60-120fps gaming, I'd still go for VRR. Your sensitivity to overdrive issues may vary, so VRR below 60Hz might not bother you, either. Your mileage may vary.
@@paulbmiller24 Thanks for the explanation - sounds like it's more pronounced at a particular range. VRR is a huge part of buying a HDMI 2.1 TV since it's able to help with varying frame rates or games that can't hold a particular frame rate. Surprised that TCL hasn't fixed those on their higher-end models.
@@techsamurai11 Absolutely. Yeah, it's surprising they don't have a better solution in place. That said, I actually hadn't noticed any overdrive issues at all, but I'm also not a console gamer, so that's probably the difference.

Hi folks, does anyone here own the QM851G? How do you percieve the viewing angles? Acceptable? Or more like aweful? It would be great if you tell the size of your TV and at which distance you watch, and if you watch in a dark room (in bright rooms the blacks and blooming and viewing angles are percieved completely differently than in dark rooms, that´s why I like to specify-get specified). Hi everyone, I'm searching for the rewiew of the model c765 (TCL), maybe has another code name.. but I can't find it anyhere. I'm interested to buy it, could you help me?
I’m interested in how this compares to the Sony Bravia 7. No surprise the B9 is the better tv but the B7 is the actual competition for the QM8 I’d think?
Yeah agreed. I was watching the dimming zone tests of the X93L, X95L, Bravia 7, Bravia 9, and QM8 and the Bravia 7 on Rtings seems to do a weird thing where it lights up adjoining areas (blooming I guess) despite having more dimming zone than the X93L and the same as the X95L and supposedly the new lighting control of the Bravia 9. It’s definitely not the same as the X95L. Maybe the new lighting control needs more zones than Sony anticipated… Now you can’t really see it until it’s a dark scene but it’s a bit strange. Rtings also talked about the issue in the description but scored it fairly high given that strange behavior - maybe the camera’s exposure was lifted to pick the effect up. I don’t understand why this TV isn’t closer to the X95L especially given the competition. It seems that brightness was the main concern at the expense of angles, finish, and contrast.
If I had a nickel for every time I saw Bravia 7, 8, and 9 shortened to B7, B8, and B9 I’d be able to drop out of university. LG already uses those for their OLED TVs
6:32 Here you say that this is the brightest TV that you've tested. Yet, a few minutes later you show the Hisense that you've tested, with a higher brightness.
The HDR brightness metric seems to depend heavily on the hallway lights, skyscraper and landscape pool images in which for the hallway lights, the qm8 has the brightest record for that metric
Depends on the scene my guy. Overall the TCL is the brighter set. In most windows sizes the TCL either matches or has a higher nit count than the u8n. In either case both TV's are incredibly bright and unless you set the thing outside in the summer to watch tv you shouldn't have to worry about brightness from either of them.
It only shows the value for a peak 10% window, if you compare both TVs in multiple scenarios, the QM8 is the brighter TV overall! Sorry for any confusion, but you can compare for yourself using our table tool: www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/hisense-u8-u8n-vs-tcl-qm8-qm851g-qled/50406/60898?usage=1&threshold=0.10#test_179
Brightest isn't just a peak. Its about its ability to maintain high brightness all around. I believe Rtings is the best they've ever been at reflecting this fairly.
I don't understand your ratings on a given feature. Nearly always (always?), the rating is far higher than the percentile data vs. other tvs re the same issue shown at the bottom of the same slide.
I have last years 85” qm8 and haven’t had a single issue with vrr or screen tearing and I play multiple hours a day on it. Also the viewing angles great. You have to try to get on an angle to mess up the picture. Most of this stuff is way over blown just to have some differences so they have something to take about.
Typical of many brands, the ones sold in the USA are not the same as the ones sold in the EU/UK this makes it very difficult to compare them. My own experience of Hisense has put me off buying any of the Chinese brands, their customer service is very poor. The TCL's don't come with some of the important apps installed and you can't add them forcing you use an external box. I will wait until next year for the 2025 models with the new SoC.
I saw the brightness measurements. The 3 is bad, it has the same brightness in all window sizes so highlights must be the same brightness as other content. Essentially, in a bright room with brightness maxed the TV is running out of juice.
@@techsamurai11 Yes there is no local dimming but the screen uniformity and excellent color gamut makes the picture look sharp and detailed. Also brightness seems to be decent if not great.
@@BhavinnTrivedi Yes, it has all the great things that a Sony has including decent viewing angles. The lack of highlights though are a killer assuming it's not able to do them. Plus it will have a gray image at night but that can be reduced with bias lighting.

Just a matter of time before it comes back. I walked into Best Buy this week and all the TV's, even the worst of them were amazing and then some. Sure the +$3000 TV was better than the $500 one. while China TV push boundaries in certain areas, they are lacking in reliability, many TCL Hisense broke down within in 3 years in Chinese forums. They adopt an all and burst design approach.
Why do you only refer to the 10% brightness when 100% brightness is what is actually important? This is also reflected in your weird scoring system that has no relation to reality and is inherently OLED biased. Your test images also make no sense. If this TV has an HDR score of 9.7 OLED should be at around 4 with their low brightness and insane ABL issues.
I mean, depends how often you sit off to the side of your TV. In most real world situations, it doesn't matter and if I'm THAT off angle, I'm probably not super concerned with the picture quality considering the perspective is already warped. Maybe if you have a lot of parties where people sit close & off the side a bit it could be a problem?

At the 75" size - U8N or QM8? I don't really need a wider viewing angle and other pq.

I wonder if the numbers would be consistent if five TVs of the same model were tested. I'm betting they wouldn't.
Who's the competitors are you talking about oleds or mini leds or something else or what
We bought the 2023 55" C805K in the UK from Amazon which is a QD-Mini LED model.
Where can I find the newest firmware update for the 2023 QM850G??? Not OTA. Need a link for the version 295 that RTINGS has.

how can you find out your hdr peak brightness for your tv which own not getting a accurate answer my tv lg c3 git to be over 700 nits???
You said the VRR motion bugs seem to happen at 65hz, does that mean at that mark or above and below 65?
If it’s below, that’s the golden range for 40-60 fps for consoles so it’s pretty much a no go as a gaming TV. At 65hz, it would affect frame rate unlocked games that push over 60hz. Still a pretty significant issue that almost negates the benefits of VRR over a locked mode.
Also when VRR fails to kick in, does the TV indicate that it’s falsely in VRR mode?
So the TV says that VRR is on but it’s actually not? That’s a significant issue.

Hi everyone, I'm searching for the rewiew of the model c765 (TCL), maybe has another code name.. but I can't find it anyhere. I'm interested to buy it, could you help me?
please review the 2024 TCL QM7
Maybe the new lighting control needs more zones than Sony anticipated…
Now you can’t really see it until it’s a dark scene but it’s a bit strange.

@tracer073 thanks!
That metric includes brightness at different window sizes too.
Better than the Sony Bravia 8 ?
You guys rated the hisense u8n at over 3600 nits why does this have a higher brightness rating???
It only shows the value for a peak 10% window, if you compare both TVs in multiple scenarios, the QM8 is the brighter TV overall! Sorry for any confusion, but you can compare for yourself using our table tool: www.rtings.com/tv/tools/compare/hisense-u8-u8n-vs-tcl-qm8-qm851g-qled/50406/60898?usage=1&threshold=0.10#test_179

Except for one feature left behind, passive 3D. Then things get interesting.
