Great tutorial as normal. Is there a way to block network’s from showing in the available networks list ? I know you have to click on them to engage, but some public networks that are not trusted or just don’t work, it would be nice to use stop them popping up. It’s not that crucial but annoying. Cheers

Congratulations on having the absolute best Apple-specific channel on the internet.
Ventura's System Settings provides no way to manually prioritize network choice. That automated "learning" system is fine most of the time, I'm sure, but I miss being able to simply see all my known networks in a list and reorder the list any way I like. I have three wifi networks in my home and I need to use a specific one for work while a second is for use by "the kids". My Mac loves connecting to "the kids" network because it seems to detect that it has the strongest signal or the best throughput or something. But I only want to use my "work" network and sometimes my "other" network. At the same time, I don't want to "forget" the "kids" network because every now and then I need to get on it for a quick maintenance task or other (such as remote-restarting their router) but that seems to be the only option in Ventura for preventing a connection to that network when a more-preferred network is available.
On my M1 iMac, wifi drops out about once every three days, despite the fact that my phone is still connected, my Macbook is still connected, and Hulu on the TV never stops streaming. I have to turn wifi off, wait about a minute, and turn it back on again and hope it reconnects. I don't see anyone else complaining about this issue, so it's likely some weirdness between the iMac and my router, but it's genuinely frustrating to be working and suddenly no wifi. I know it's nothing to do with this video, but it reminded me of this rather annoying issue.
On My Mac - Limit Address tracking is an available toggle even when iCloud Relay is off. Is it possible these two settings are unrelated? Also has Ventura removed the ability to randomize MAC addresses when joining Wi-Fi networds?
I believe you can switch it on or off for the network so you can then control which networks use it if you turn the main switch on. At least that is according to one Apple doc. As for a random MAC address, I'm pretty sure that is an iOS/iPadOS feature, not a macOS feature.
I hope Apple makes a permanent low data mode option for a network instead of having to turn it on every time I connect to that certain network which is annoying to do.
For some reason my Mac would many times join my slower 5G network rather than my main one that my iPad and phone were using. Maybe this feature of my manually changing it to the better one will eventually stop this behaviour but it’s a nuisance.
I recently retired my 11 year old Windows PC for a MacBook Pro. As an iPhone user for years there was very little learning curve since the System Settings from iOS is already so familiar.
In your 2018 video "How To Use Location Services On Your Mac Without Wi-Fi" (ua-cam.com/video/hY_z1_0RUSM/v-deo.htmlsi=aXYXQEDfoYqDPoUp&t=175) at time 2:15, you discuss the "Disconnect from" wifi network option available when pressing the option-key while opening the wifi menu. In Sonoma, this option is no longer available. Is there a workaround for those who want to use Location Services without joining a wifi network?
The router IP address being displayed in WiFi settings is the Local address of the router itself on your home network, in a private IP range, it IS NOT your outside IP address on the internet side of the router, so at 3.43 where you say, 'this is your IP address to connect to the rest of the internet', this is plain wrong! That is the local address you would use to log in to the actual router itself through a web page, where you could then find your outward, internet, IP address in the routers own config settings.
I have found a problem with ventura. Connection to open network seems doesn't work properly. I have WiFi network at work which is not WPA2 or anything protected. (Personally I don't see much benefits from protected radio path other then someone may steal somebody WiFi password. Since no password nothing to steal. All other traffic is encrypted by server-client anyway. Actual network I am talking about is well protected because access to WiFi is by splash screen or by preregistered mac-address, radius server is involved and firewall. Just there is no WPA at the AP points. In practice, nobody can connect network if not registered user or mac-address of the device.). Ventura gives me clear warning that network is "unsecured" and it not really work. Actually it goes outside, but very slowly and never finish to load web page. I end up connecting wire instead. I don't remember I had similar case before Ventura. Had no time to explore this case deeply. Just quick google the problem, nothing found yet about. Any idea?
Keep in mind that bad actors don't need to connect to the network to "sniff" unencrypted data from it. Not at all. This sounds like a problem with that particular network and I don't have any advice, sorry.
Hello Gary and thank you for the tutorial. I have an issue in my apartment. Walls are made out of concrete so although my modem is not far from my iMac my Wifi single is weak. What do you suggest besides using Ethernet cable? Thank you
The advanced Wifi area for me was an eye opener. I had something like 30 unused Wifi networks which I must have collected from various iOS devices over the years - some of the names in there are my own old SSID names I haven't used in years. Cleared that crud all out - now just two. My current home networks' 2.4 & 5Ghz. That's it. Shocked at how much nonsense was in there.
Hi Gary. I have a sort of related question. I have been having problems with my current VPN provider providing me less than 50/1000 of the speed I have when not connected to their vpn (both with and without dedicated IP). And I've noticed the same thing with other providers. They tend to not limit our speeds when we first start using them, but then over time, d/l speeds decrease more and more. Is it possible to create our own VPN right from our own MBPs without the need to pay someone else (and thus trust someone else)? And if so, can you teach us how? And would it be possible with and without dedicated IPs? Thanks!
Not easily, no. You'd probably need a specific type of ISP service and a dedicated computer/server/router to handle it. What's your use for a VPN? With almost all web services being SSL today and almost all apps using secure connections too, plus Apple's private relay service, most people don't need a VPN most of the time.
@@macmost Hi and thank you! I just posted this question on another of your videos about VPNs. But I'll ask it here as well. If I'm away on a trip for weeks at a time and I need to check my financial accounts at different institutions, but I don't have a VPN, is it safe to use the hotel's wifi (or coffee shop's wifi, or whatever else) to connect to the different banks and or other financial accounts from a browser on my MBP? Or maybe I should ask, if I haven't got a VPN, then how do I know when it isn't safe for me to perform those kinds of necessary activities on my MBP?
@@reallifelegend4781 That's exactly when I DO use a VPN. But it is double-protecting you since the connection to a bank or such would certainly be SSL anyway (https). Nothing wrong with double protection. Apple's private relay would work too. But in these situations running at 50% of the speed isn't really an issue. I mean, how often do you need to do it, and it isn't like you are watching streaming video or uploading a huge file with your bank's site. The hotel/cafe Wi-Fi speed is probably not great anyway. I usually just avoid doing any online banking or such when I'm not on my own Wi-Fi. Not many other things need double security protection unless you work for a company where this is needed (and then your IT department probably sets things up with rules).
@@macmost It isn't 50% of the speed. It is 50/1000th the speed! In other words, I am anywhere between the mid 800s and just over 1GB when not connected to the VPN, but often less than 50 Mbps, and always less than 150 Mbps when connected to the VPN! But okay. So I'll assume it is safe to do without a VPN while at home on ethernet or wifi, and try to avoid any financial activity as much as possible when not at home. Thank you once again!
@@reallifelegend4781 Usually you can switch servers on those in the settings. Try doing that. Of course if you are in London and connected to a VPN in California, and the server is in Michigan, then you have a much longer route for your data to travel with many more steps.
Incorrect statement at 3:34 when talking about IP addresses. The router IP shown isn’t the external internet address of the router; it is the router address on the internal network
For most people their router address is their IP address. Only if you have a separate wifi router from modem (like me, and I suspect you) then it would be the wifi routers address on your internal modems network. But even then you can set this up differently.
Not planning on talking about firewalls. The vast majority of Mac users don't need to turn on the firewall because macOS and apps aren't just "listening" to incoming connections like Windows (used to, I don't think it does it anymore? Not sure).
What does the error message say, exactly? Try things. Try turning Wi-Fi on and off on your Mac. Try restarting your Wi-Fi network. Try deleting (forgetting) the network and signing back on again fresh.
Great informative video. You made one error. The router IP is your gateway and it's internal to you. The internet doesn't see that because it's natted just like your IP. The internet sees what your service provider uses for your internet connection.
Hi Gary. My ipad is showing an incorrect service providers name.Where as my iPhone shows the correct one. Would you happen to know how to change it on the iPad?
You mean a mobile service provider? Like AT&T instead of Verizon, etc? Maybe you are roaming and using a different one? Go to Settings, Cellular and check there.
@@macmost Solution was that I bought the iPad second hand and it had an old SIM card in it from other provider. Took that out and restarted iPad and has solved the issue. Thanks for the reply Gary. Keep well. Still enjoy all your tutorials.
No. I think you need a special router that would combine them into one connection, or perhaps some third-party software would offer it. Is your Wi-Fi coming from a different Internet connection than your Ethernet? Otherwise, it wouldn't make any sense anyway.
Great information as always. Can you do a video on fixing the issue of a MacBook with Ventura not connecting to the internet, even if the WiFi is working. My MacBook Pro is having this issue.
Hard to say why you are having that problem. You need to work to diagnose and fix it. Step-by-step is more for how-to. Fix-it need investigation. If you can't seem to fix it on your own, you'll need to call Apple Support, go to the Genius Bar, or take it to another expert who can help.

@@MyDogSteppedOnaBeee Interesting. I don't think I've ever once had to reset my Bluetooth like that on any Mac over all of the years. If it is a constant problem, maybe time to take it in for repairs? Otherwise, if you can do it in the Terminal, then maybe set up a Shortcut for it.
@@macmost Hi Gary thanks for the answer. Great video, thanks. One question though - why do Personal Hotspots show up even though the Hotspot feature on the corresponding iPhone may be switched off? Is this an Apple ID thing, i.e. the Mac knows the same Apple ID is being used on your phone so shows it even though it's not enabled on the phone? If not then it seems like poor security to be advertising a hotspot that's not enabled?

Sounds like you installed something from a site you wouldn't have trusted. Installing something like Malwarebytes (free) for a one-time scan and fix is hit-or-miss. Don't know if that is going to work for you. I'd take it to an expert for a firsthand look and have them thoroughly examine things.
If possible, please explain to utilize BOTH wifi and Ethernet connections on a Mac. Wired connection is faster but I need communication with iPhone, iPad and other peripherals in a different network segment at the same time. If I set either one on and off I need to try resetting Ip address for Ethernet side or network error occurs.
Not sure what you are dealing with. You can't use both at the same time. But if these are the same network then you shouldn't need to. There's no issue connecting to the same router with wired or wireless, as long as it is the same network. But if they are different networks you need to switch to talk to the devices on that network. But I don't know what you are doing when you say "communication with iPhone" -- what sort of communication? You can "communicate" with devices on different networks (in other locations) just fine. Everyone does it all the time.
Hi Gary, I’m very glad you do these videos ,as Apple always seems to release a lot of info that I need guidance to navigate. I find Ventura really great. Stage Manager can be very useful but not all the time. You have to play with it to learn its full benefits. The main thing is that it's so easy to turn on and off through your control centre. I say try Ventura you will love it.
I have a network drive that seems to have disappeared on Ventura. It is a MyBook Network drive I have had for years and used on Monterey without a problem. Now it doesn't even show up. Any suggestions?

Gary, you got me on this video. Normally when I watch your youTube vids I will watch it in full screen mode on my iMac. Today while not paying attention I freaked myself out. I was watching the video and following along but at first forgot I was watching in full screen mode. Your video while full screen mode fits perfectly on my iMac screen to where it looks like my desktop is being controlled by you with your picture in picture over in the right corner. I cracked myself up trying to click on something I could not do and thought my iMac had screwed up LOL
🤣
Hi Gary, thanks for the video. It was very resourceful. Did they get rid of the option for a reset Bluetooth module because it doesn’t work anymore for this macOS do you know how to do it?
Not sure what you mean.
@@macmost Resetting the Bluetooth module to fix constant Bluetooth disconnections. It's on the apple website discussion forums if you google it. Pre Monterey you used to be able to hold down the option key from the menu bar on the Bluetooth symbol and select under debug then click on Reset the Bluetooth module, now I believe it can only be done with terminal correct me if I am wrong? I am trying to see if there is a way to do it from the menu bar like the way you showed the WiFi info at the end of this video with the option key in Ventura because my Bluetooth is so horrible! Thanks
I have been to the genius bar for an appointment apparently it is a big problem with M1 Mini's constant Bluetooth connection interruption and random disconnections, and tried what they suggested still the same issues. I was asking you thinking maybe you knew of some troubleshooting because you are very knowledgeable and that maybe you knew something else that apple didn't offer as a tip. I learn a lot from your videos. It looks like I may have to call apple again, but I hear from other Mini users of M1 this is a problem along with random HDMI disconnections where the screen goes black all of the sudden.
What do you mean by "switched off?" There is a setting for "Allow Others to Join" but no hard off switch. The important word there is "Others."
Hey Gary, ur videos are always helpful. Can you make a video on the sharing settings in system preferences and clicking into general. Thanks boss
I'm not sure what you are asking.
thanks and querry...hi garry love your content. they are helpful in doing so many things this cannel is my go to for most of the querries regarding mac. What if i already have malware or any bug? whenever my computer connects to internet some betting website and chillsearch opens up what i should i do please help....
Excellent tutorial. Many thanks!
what about changing the wpa?
Not sure what you mean.
Very informative. Thanks
Megadodo......LOL!
A sci-fi book reference, if you know it...
@@macmost I didn't at first but got it now.
Hi Gary, I’m very glad you do these videos ,as Apple always seems to release a lot of info that I need guidance to navigate. I’m curious to see if you think the upgrade to Ventura is a good idea right now. I think the info regarding the password stuff is what is holding me back! Many thanks to you for what you do!
I always update when the new version is released. Sure, there are bugs, but the old OS has bugs too. All software does. At least you get the latest features. Not sure what you mean by "regarding the password stuff."
So a drive connected to a MacBook and then shared from that MacBook? Just check your sharing settings for that MacBook and for that drive in System Settings/Preferences. Make sure the other Mac you are trying to connect with is on the same exact network (not a guest network or something).
Sorry Gary, I restarted the drive and it came up. Dah! That old re-boot trick still works.... LOL
@@macmost It is a WD MyBook drive on the same network. After a reboot of the drive it came up and I could connect. Thanks for the quick response. Love your channel. So helpful.
I did wonder why I couldn't rearrange the known WiFi order as I want in Ventura, but now I know better... thanks as always-- If Apple as a Company is not directly contributing to you (Financially) it'll be a shame-- Cos your contribution to Apple user's experience is unmatched elsewhere.
FYI --I'm not supported at all by Apple, but by my viewers (macmost.com/patreon)
@macmostvideo Am scribed to Apple channel here and I can't remember the last time I visited... Sad knowing no support to Macmost by Apple
@@lawrenceatkinson Nothing sad about it. I don't accept "sponsors" and I can't imagine having Apple as a sponsor as that would give them some influence over what I do. Much rather have direct support from viewers.
@macmostvideo I agree with you there... Bcos I got to know about Blackhole (Recording the screen with voice) from you and Apple's policy on privacy would rather not agree to that, Thank you for what you doing for us once again and a Big thanks to the patron supporters on your behalf. It's was yesterday it done on me there are no adverts on your channel going through becoming a patron member.
Great tips thanks.
