- In part 2 of remodelling my first floor, we get into the fun part of demolishing a few walls. Oh, and I find ANOTHER FIREPLACE Don't forget at the moment we currently are about 18 days away from my wedding day! In this video, I also figure out why my walls are 12" thick when the cabinets were built, and we get our materials to hold up the rest of the house!

There are easier ways to avoid wedding plans with the fiance
Ha!!! I actually laughed out loud at this one! Nice.
hahahahah dont give away my secret!
Love to watch him spontaneously destroy his house and find random fireplaces. 10/10 content quality 💯
Your helper, Sam, is so laid back... he's a hard worker and goes with the flow of your madness:)
He sure is a patient man hahah
"That's Hank. No, Hank." *closes door* oh my god I love Hank
There's some house in your dust bro
Ahh good look dude .... 😬
Aka asbestos
😂
Are you having a profession chimney cleaner coming out to inspect and clean the fireplaces before you use them?
No, I dont plan on using them for fireplaces without inserts. Its too small to burn in them
Dont know why people would be criticising him for removing certain elements of the house. I personally wouldn't be removing a lot of these things. But its his house ,and he can do whatever him and his fiance want without criticism.
Well, its the internet and everyone is entitled to their opinion haha
Yeah. and it's not like he can't build a quality custom built in himself. Lol.
Weird old house features are sometimes charming, but they’re usually just old and weird.
Nailed it Seth, just old and weird haha
Your personality is really 'Shining' through in this one John! 😁👍🏻👊🏻
Thanks Fred! Glad you enjoyed it
the built in was beautiful. Also the original wooden floors. And the door
Date of filming October 2, which is 3 weeks from the wedding. Upload day 4 weeks after filming... Congratulations 🎉 on the new chapter in your life and I hope you guys are having all kinds of newlywed fun all over that beautifully remodeled home.
Haha thanks Charles, it does take a bit to get the videos edited haha , i wish they just happened like magic
Mr Malecki, you're fast being one of the most entertaining UA-camrs! Usually I fast forward these types of videos to see the end result but you're simply too much fun! Loving your vids atm they are really well done
I wish I was there helping you knock them walls down I love Reno work xx
I hope you saved some of those newspapers, would be pretty cool to find a random local headline with a date and frame it for the house (my parents did something similar in their 1890’s Victorian when they found a date/signature on the old school vapor barrier by the chimney)
I saved a piece, were going to display it in the house!
Ya shoulda saved dem old studs for yer next rustic furniture project!
Rustic furniture is way way behind me haha
That pocket door demo was LEGITTTT!!! I bet you've always wanted to do that. Sweet video, loving what y'all are doing! Keep it up!
It was hilarious mostly because i just wanted to use a huge hammer. Sam had the axe in his car! So we took advantage of the situation haha
Sam for the win!! So awesome!!
just came across this dude yesterday and he is hilarious, loving these videos
Yinz are making nice progress. Your staircase reminds me of the one in my old place in Oakland.
haha thanks! Don't get too used to it, its going here this winter too!
Great energy brother. Keep it up! Can't wait to see how this turns out.
Thanks Josh! 💪🏻
Cool Video John! I like how you are opening up your rooms!
I like how you said dont complain about me knocking out the vintage cabinet out. But it probably wasnt original to the house.
I dont think it was original, but it sure was old.
When the blade pinches mid cut "YOU DONE MESSED UP A-ARON!"
Ya it was about to go thru the wall dude !
Entertainment at its finest!
Dig the content, inspiration and laughs🤘
Well done again on keeping the fireplace yer did right with the silly cabinet and the sliding door looking forward to the next video all the best
Best DIY channel hands down, with priceless comedy haha!
You have great taste
Nice job. Looking forward for more👍🔨
Great stuff guys!
Thanks Adam !
Loved the Ax!!!! Great Video!
Thats awesome Manuel, I am so glad you enjoyed it !
Looks great👍👍👍👍
Lol. I actually thought you were going to keep the China hutch after you exposed the chimney. I wanted to take a picture of the finished product for inspiration. My dads house has the same layout in the dining room and when he bought his house in the 70’s, of course it had been updated with wall to wall paneling and they covered the hutch in it, 🤮, I know, right. Anyways, took a screenshot before you started to demo. It will still be my inspiration. Lol.
The Diablo carbide tipped blades( they're around $15-20, sooo worth it though )are my go-to when stripping a lathe and plater wall. Cuts like hot knife through butter, especially when cutting cast iron pipe in older houses. Give them a try on your next room remodel. -J.
Doing a total remodel in the house I live in. It also had pocket doors but all the wood was oak so the doors with the hardware sold for pretty good money with in a couple of hours.
Another great video! Congrats to you and your fiance! God bless you both!
Haha great video m’man!
The wife may not have been blown away by the surprise third fireplace, but she might be by the gorgeous walnut frame you could make that holds that super trendy, vintage old newspaper nonsense. Easy points with the future mrs. 👌🏽💯
Very easy points there haha good look!
I just found your channel and dude, you are awesome!
Thanks ACCER ! You rock my friend!
Nice!!
Hallo from Germany. I also have a big Fireplace in my Home. The House was build in 1536. The Fireplace is 6 foot wide and 4 foot high, build of hand made bricks. Realy cool, your discovery.
Helped my dad rip a wall out of his house a few years ago. found newspaper in it from 1903. Unfolded it with minimal ripping as well.
Much respect dude , I like your personality 😂😂😂
Hey! Where's the 2nd part of this, where we get to see the whole thing done? Thanks!
Very awesome remodel.
Thank you my friend !
The new floorplan will be so much nicer with much better sight lines. I love being able to see the staircase!
1:30 into clip. Bad memories of my reno, wife, and living with dust!!!!! DO IT!
That looks like balloon framing, a lot of houses in that part of the country were made that way in the early 1900’s. That makes the job soooooo much more fun.
Oh ya ! Its for sure balloon framed. Learned a bit about it when i got into the demo. Never knew it was a thing till i started poking around !
You are crazy as hell! Love the show!
Fyi John, I do that math for a living. (Design engineered wood floor systems) And since you were kind enough to teach me to weld at spring make this year, if you find you need that sort of thing again, feel free to give me a shout.
Hello my friend! We have a project coming up I think we can work on together, send me an email thebuilder@johnmalecki.com !
This is awesome!!! SFC Kenna here, learning all kinds of shit, hahaha!!!!!
Looking good man
Thank you!
Finding fireplaces is fun. House I live in is small only as 6 small rooms and all have a fireplace.
Thats awesome !!
Put a few box fans in windows to get a nice cross draft! Although it would probably look like smoke pouring out of your house haha
Ya I’m sure someone would’ve called the fire department haha
good tip man :)
Comment 1 about destroying that BEAUTIFUL built in!!!!! Also I cant believe that you got ride of that pocket door! My heart aches for the history. I get it, you should enjoy your home in the way that feels best to you, but the history is disappearing from the buildings.
Omg and that paper that is 77 years old! How crazy! Would be interesting to know who lived in house durning that time and what their story was.
Thanks for another great Reno episode.
Glad you enjoyed it Jessica, sometimes you gotta trade the function for the history. We never used the door, it had to go!
But John, that door is sooo beautiful. Why would you throw it away?
Makes for an amazing trash pile !
@@John_Malecki, less doors... more.... FREEDOM!🦅🇺🇸
Nice work! I’ll buy that pocket door hardware if you still have it.
That doorway had sliding pocket doors that went across and slid on the track. Is that wall load bearing
That pocket door was so beautiful, why did you throw it away?! And that built in by the fireplace...also so beautiful why did you throw it away!?!?
😬
15:29: Dog looking in thinking, (future) wife is not going to be pleased...well, I had the same massive deconstruction with my dog watching all the time....anyway, nice one dude!!!
10:12, pst. Hey bro, fly's down.
15:00 Yeah..... He's lost it. 🤣
The ceiling fan running makes for proper distribution of dust.
What brand model air respirator do you use ?
John, that built in was hideous. I'm glad you put it out of its misery 🤣
When is the big date?
Thanks Dan, I agree. It was actually 10.19. This video is post wedding... should give you some hints as to how it went hahaha
Oh congratulations John and this is a good test of how strong your bond is! We built a house just before we got married and 28 years later we are still together. Ripping down walls and destroying stuff is a great release as I'm sure you know. Now...I think I need to go rip something down! Keep em coming please.
Thanks,
DC
John. Common man if Ray lewis was on the other side of that wall i bet you would crush that wall LMAO!
You are hilarious. Love your videos.
Thanks Jeannette! So glad you enjoy my stuff !
I live in Pittsburgh as well. How much for that track on the door?
Its in a dumpster somewhere , sorry my friend haha
Good choice on removing that built in, it looked like someone stuck an old random screen door on the wall. 😁
You looked like a Bengal lineman.😁👍❤️
WOW! Most insulting comment I think I have ever had!😬
Try a scrabbler on the brickwork next time, lot less dust lol
Hey John,
How do you know which wall you can break down, and on which wall is a force?
Greetings from Austria
Weight barring walls will run perpendicular with trusses. Aka trusses crosses over and makes contact or perimeter walls
What's the brand of the respirator?
You should have waaay more subs, amazing content
Well thank you Anne! Tell all your friends!!!
seeing that lathe and plaster, I'd have lit a match, poured a foundation and had it framed before the mrs got back from a random 3 week vacation :)
I literally hate old houses...hate them.
the smell of old death, the sagging, the walls that are like my fupa in the middle.
Biggy boy your sweatin lol
So, how did you guys determine that wasn't also a support wall to hold up the roof?
You should totally redo that beautiful Built-in
We plan on it!
gaaaah. gotta love the lathe and plaster in these old houses... good deal to get rid of all of them and replace with rock.
“Get heavier bro” me when someone talks about how they’re clowned on for not being able to gain weight
Excellent demolish. And even better taking out the door with an axe and that WWII era China cabinet.
Thanks Daniel, any chance to use an ax is alright by me!
@@John_Malecki agreed lol. Best tool in the tool shop. Especially if you have daughters. Nothing like greeting the new boyfriend with an ax over your shoulder. Lol
You have the agility of a cat... A frozen cat but still. Great job
It’s too bad I’m a dog guy.... 🙈
You are unique! How many times have I said this in how many ways?
Are you in Pittsburgh?
Older houses of that era, had POCKET HOLE doors. Very chic in the day.
Perfect work bro
Best wishes for rénovation
Thank you my friend !
@@John_Malecki you're welcome 👌👍👍👍👍🇲🇦🇲🇦
walls like that with all that little bits of wood.. any videos I see that has that I always get a grudge against it. because, I kinda want to get a cheaper house that may need work or just updated, and renovate it. I'd hate to have to have that stuff, if want to take it out then do a normal wall with dry wall on it.. or just take that stuff out.
About that built in 😂😂😂
That looks like barn door hangers
Yeah you are! 😆😍
Well atleast we're on the same page haha
Shout Out to Mount Wershington
We owned a house of the same period for nearly 30 years. That pocket door was made from the same materials as all the doors in our house. Call it cheap - I call it economical, and those doors are still functioning just fine. So, my opinion, that pocket door is (was) original to the house. And making fun of some people who see the VALUE in things like that (such as for people who want to RESTORE their homes, not turn them into something modern) is just NOT COOL.
Your doors may have been of a better quality. But a few things, the smaller doors in our home are the same Doug fir which is a soft and cheap material. You can call the term “cheap” or economical. But the fact is, the price of that door is less than a solid hardwood door, which for the style of home and for resale is a better option. Restoring a home to its traditional features doesn’t always mean keeping what’s in it. The pocket door was maybe original to the home, but the previous owners refinished it improperly multiple times and it was beyond repair. I appreciate the comment, but by calling something cheap I’m not intending to offend. I’m clearly stating that in the spectrum of materials used for this application, this option specifically, is of lower grades
I stink. Smell it! ...this says it all. 💕😁😘
And his name is in fact John! Get it?!
I guess that's why you were on the practice squad. ;) JK, love your stuff man!
Don't do math on camera, lol.
Wowowow I was on the active roster.... gotta practice before you play. That was a good burn tho! haha 💪🏻🤣
You mean don’t do math.... hahah
You might find dead people in the walls....LOL
I like the Next Friday reference in there..haha
Glad you dig it Derek!
Drywall/Sheetrock is so much better than plaster.
Put a big ass fan in the window and blow that dust out.
Thats what the air filter on the floor was for, we did that eventually as well
0:28 „Rediculles thick“ In Germany this is not even average^^
"Don't be an idiot and try and do it yourself"
What if i am an engineer?
Then you’re not an idiot Hahahah 💪🏻
@@John_Malecki hahahahah, Awesome project man. Watched part 2 aswell it turned out good :) lets see if that statement lasts during a windy storm ahah
Did you have any of the house tested for asbestos?
After watching several of your videos, i cannot believe that you didn't refinish those beautiful hardwood floors. That was a waste. But! It's your house
