Nirvana Edgewater Hotel Interview 1993

- “I really don't care what anyone thinks about my past drug use. I could put the blame on that kind of influence, but it's a mixture of rock 'n' roll in general, the Keith Richards thing, Iggy Pop and all those other people that did drugs. I just thought it was just one of those things that you do, you know, to relieve the pain. But, as I expected, before I started doing heroin, I realised that… I knew at the beginning that it would become just as boring as marijuana does. Like all drugs, after a few months, it's just as boring as breathing air, so… I just don't wanna turn… I've always lied about it, because I never wanted- I didn't want to influence anybody, you know? I didn't want anyone to even consider the thought of doing drugs, because it's really stupid.” - Kurt Cobain

Crazy that he said nobody liked In Utero and it's gone on to become one of the most iconic albums of all time and literally their best work
When I first heard it I wasn't blown away. Infact I skipped through it. But ten years later I realised after really listening that it's his best work.
Serve the servants is a powerful song and message. Kurt Was truly a Gift from God.
@@matthewjdouglas6471 kinda how it hit me, the first listen I wasn’t too impressed bc I had already heard nevermind and bleach and then, maybe it was just good timing, but my senior year of high school i was just tired of everything and was just down, didn’t even look forward to graduating, I just remember playing the entire album over and over with my head down, and it just spoke to me. After that, every day in my computer class I’d close my eyes and go into a dream-like state and just enjoy the album on repeat. Great memories looking back, but I thought I was in hell at the time lol.
Kurt was talking nonsense. I was 19 when In Utero came out. The singles were MASSIVE and it was a sold out tour. The normies/mainstream may have been lukewarm to it compared to Nevermind, but the album was loved by the alternative audience right from the get go.
It's not that nobody liked it...it just wasn't Nevermind and didn't have the same type of apeal to the masses that helped Nevermind be so widely popular...It still had a fee very popular radio played songs with Heart Shaped Box, All Apologies and to an extent Rape Me all were very popular...but the album as a whole is by far my favorite Nirvana album and I love all of their albums
Kurt was highly photogenic. Beautiful soul and artist. It just came through the shots, no matter where or how he looked that day. His soul was bright.
His looks made them too popular.
He didn’t seem to know how handsome he was. Neglected kids are like that. Courtney always told him that he was “so cute” but it didn’t stick. You gotta learn self-confidence, self-love, from your mom and dad, or you’ll never believe it, no matter what other people say.
😢💔Nirvana 4-ever
@@sabbracadabra8367 Those looks are why the industry chose him to make music which had already been done in the 80's, popular in the 90's and beyond.
@@Scotty-P I think his great voice and talent for songwriting made them choose him. It had all been done before but most of it was done in an uncommercial way from bands like Husker Du that were deliberately harsh sounding. Kurts songs were liked by rockers and punks and metal heads yet it could go on the radio and sound ok to pop fans too. He was a super talent. But I think he wanted to be about as big as the Pixies or Soundgarden, not become the top music star in the world.
@@sabbracadabra8367 Horrible screeching does not make for a "great voice". Though there were moments when he showed that he could sing.
You're someone else who realises the truth too, and I think that; if he did in fact commit suicide, then it was because he'd had such a major hand in turning the music; and something of the scenes, which he'd loved so much so big.
5:00 you know I can totally imagine Kurt getting clean, getting his life together and become a great acoustic singer and songwriter for so much longer. Dude had some long-term plans
we all wish that could happen :(((
Amen. He had so much to look forward too. He was going to divorce Courtney, move on from the industry, move country and get clean. He did not kill himself
@@digitalsoldier3894 he definitely did, all the signs are there for someone at risk
@@15gamershaven89 bullshit. That's some stuff that courtney made up. Several friends of him say he Was moody, sometimes depressed, sometimes on drugs but it wasn't that bad. Overall he Was quiet but fun.
@@15gamershaven89 all the signs that Seattle police and cortney want you to believe, on the outside of Seattle , investigators believe it was murder
4:58 Teared up a little when he started talking about his hopes for the future as he got older😢
Yep murder is sad.
@@mikewren7532 Suicide, if you were actually paying attention.
He was so fckng nice, humble and adorable. He shoud be alive
I think he is. When u ask yourself is it more plausible kurt did what he wanted. Used his influence and money to regain his anonymity the only way possible. Then u look at the facts surrounding everything makes me positive he faked his death
He was so handsome, so charismatic and talented soul.
what a beautiful soul, a true loss. rest in peace kurt.
Kurt Cobain did not kill himself.
For some reason this is his saddest interview to me ..
I miss you , Kurt..
We all do...
i feel the same way, he looks tired. what a truly terrible loss
Definitely felt that vybe... It is only because we now know his ultimate fate.
Kurt was so pure and honest
honest? Telling the interviewer that he's off drugs when in fact he probably just shot up a few hours before the interview.
@@hom0s4cer that’s unfortunate but that’s probably the truth
@@faithinhumanity3390 so the truth is, he was being dishonest ;)
dead 30 years and therres still miscreants like you nabbing at an interview; and he was honest much more than youd be if you were addicted to heroin and top of the world famous
The world lost an incredible talented person.
25 years later, I still like Nirvana. ❤️
Dude was talking and thinking about his career as an old man yet everyone claims he was a depressed suicidal maniac. Sad what happened to him. Murder is messed up
And astrologically speaking he had non of the critical degrees that would indicate suicide. So weird
he admitted somewhere he had manic depression, and from what i can see, he was insecure, had a temper problem, definitely on the autistic spectrum, plus a drug addiction. all that isn’t a good mix
All I can do is sit here with my mouth to the floor, staring at how fucking BEAUTIFUL Kurt is....🥀
You know he had a scat fetish? A shit fetish
Gorgeous and with the water..❤
3:39....but Dave, ya guys did change rock n roll, at least it's direction with 4 power chords effectively putting an end to hair metal... I would like to thank you for that. RIP Kurt.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I heard him say in a later interview that Kurt was the best songwriter of his era. So I think it just took time for him to fully realize the impact of the band.
a true masterpiece, these interviews are so amazing and interesting
this is amazing thank u for posting it
Crazy how much he was talking about his future and moving on from nirvana for almost the whole entirety of 1993, makes you wonder
They were so young had no idea how much they influenced music
THANK YOU
He was in denial about heroin. A deniaaaaal.
No he wasn’t. Right after he says the comment about “breathing air and it being boring” he says “I don’t want to influence ANYBODY”
As a heroin addict (in recovery) I knew he was lying and I knew he knew that he was lying sadly. Sad bc of how addictive and it is mentally, spiritually (oddly enough) and physically. It’s a balm to all pain. It’s been the hardest fight of my life.
@@geraldinelafayette1838God bless you. Keep fighting.
@@user-mw3dd6ys1u 🙏🏻 thank you!
Do You wanna make me cry? Cause it's working ಥ‿ಥ
I never would have thought I'd hear the name Johnny Cash come out of Kurt Cobain's mouth! THAT'S AWESOME!!
Miss you Kurty
I could listen to him talk all day.
I would have loved to hear a Kurt & Courtney album, one thing for sure he didn’t want to do Nirvana anymore & I believe his stomach-pain issues are overlooked, it destroys your quality of life I know personally from a year of hell with digestive issues some days you just want to lay there and cry/die, god I miss this guy, he was so intelligent & creative,
Kurt said in an interview that stomach pain was no longer a problem as before and that with the help of medications it was improving, I think the press was what exhausted him the most :(
He was healed from that condition a year before he died. He stated clearly in interviews he got a proper diagnosis and healed.
It's the same for migraines😥
@@aikebandmedications yea heroin
He was a really nice guy, wasn’t he.
Kurt Cobain making a come back
This guy Was very special
I only think about Nirvana
Funny how in utero is literally one of their best albums. My favorite, at least ❤️💭 idk how people disliked it so much
He looks gorgeous even when camera is zoomed on his face💗⭐
RIP Kurt
Moderate Rock
I never understood the hate In Utero got. I’ll take it over “Nevermind” any day.
Nevermind is a great album that’s so unique it has no equal. Its the perfect execution of all their influences into a unique package. The problem with In Utero is they tried to make an album like their heroes and it’s a good album but not as good as the albums it’s trying to imitate. The Melvins, Jesus Lizard, Scratch Acid all released better albums in that style. Steve Albini knew that too.
Man I miss this dude.
Yeah you did change the rock and roll dave, you're an immortal rock and roll god
And you are exactly the type of embarrassing fan was talking about. 🤣🫵🤡
He's so hot
so r u xo
Man, I remember my friend who took his life thinking back about Kurt, I may have met a version of him in life even tho he wasn’t that big but still. My friend could show there was nothing wrong with him, but he had his down sides, I was there, and I knew he was living on an edge at some point. I kinda learn a little about Kurt this way too.
I think he might have ended up in a rough place, because suicide is a rough path, I hope he got out of there to at least give him a rest. 🙂
R.I.P. Kurt 🍀
Kurt didn’t take his life.
@@Edith1517 I can’t say for sure, but Kurt did hint to guns and off-ing himself and in interviews there would be hints. My friend hinted to being already gone and talked about taking his life. I think Kurt kinda was gone after the rome incident. And he was like a cat seeking a place to go. I can’t say he did or didn’t take his life, but that’s what the traces seem to suggest. I don’t know Kurt, but I wonder if there’s someone actually around who had a bond with him personally, who could talk without bias. Because it’s obvious courtney isn’t reliable, but there’s people who perhaps seen him in other places or hung out with him who weren’t that attached, that perhaps could tell us more that courtney ever can.
@@Edith1517 Yes he did.
@@Peter-bv9lj Bollocks. If you shoot up H it doesn't knock you out immediately...it takes a minute before you go blank... sometimes even more. There is definitely enough time if he prepared evrything neatly. I think he wanted to be double sure, that's why he chose the overdose and the shotgun. All of the other overdoses didn't work out because Courtney stepped in to revive him..

He was so beautiful..................
Whoa!
Wasn’t there 3 different interviews at this location within a few days? I recall videos and pictures with 3 different outfits

SUMMARY:
"Kurt Cobain talks about his music and life experiences. He discusses the band's latest album, drug use, and his dislike of being praised. He also mentions his desire to play acoustic guitar and be seen as a singer and songwriter. Kurt finds it challenging to connect with the audience when performing and is relieved that they have a new guitar player. He is pleased that people enjoy the music but dislikes the attention he receives. Finally, he shares his thoughts on heavy metal and the city of Seattle."
I’ve all their music!!
Amazing
I stayed at The Edgewater a few times with my family, beautiful right on Elliot Bay. Pier 67, Pearl Jam and The Beatles were there too
And Led Zeppelin.
He was so young
Nothing in this interview screams I want to kill my self. If anything, he’s making future plans. So sad. He seemed so true inside and out. Huge loss!
take a guess at what the number one response from family members is when someone ends their own life?
people act like suicidal people are depressed and down all the time when they are one of the most cheerful people you know. they just get better and better at pretending that everything fine
@@zk-nv2ei no one will ever know. It’s the one interview I’ve seen that he looks really good and genuinely happy. I could be wrong. Either way it’s very sad.
I hope his daughter feels proud and happy for her father. May her mother release her song she wrote just and only mainly for him. As he was more focus on a positive future outcome. As a solo acoustic artist. Like Johnny Cash. It all got ruined by suicide. No. There's no way he took his own life. Time to let him rest in Nirvana's peace, love, empathy. #KristenPfaff #KurtCobain #FrancesBeanCobain #CourtneyLove
They caught on years later
He seems like he was sober here. I don’t think he was ever an actual junkie as he would have never had been sober for periods. I believe he was a junkie on purpose at times when he felt like that’s all he was worth or as a way of self harm and his depression. All the stuff about his stomach pains and stiff is bs and anyone who was there or close to him also says that was all made up to excuse his using. Such a shame he want a classic junkie just needed help or another way out other than joy acting enough to kill himself.

I think he was up and down at this time he was up, but that intervention put him over the edge and the embarrassment sealed the deal for Kurt, from what I heard from people who knew him personally. Kurt could not deal with embarrassment unlike Courtney she loved thr attention of the drug thing, any attention or press she loved. Unfortunately Kurt it was like hell for him.

Here my guy
What happened to OZZY?
4:19 Talking about heavy metal and heavy metal fans.
Let’s hear it for drugs, another life destroyed .
Drugs? That's just the music business dude
never a shortage idiots
Actually Kurt shot himself
Man, Dave was saying this about Seattle in 1993! Seattle was probably best from 1980 to 1995 or so. It was an affordable city! Not unlike Pittsburgh, it was a workkng class, white city. And now its turned into a totally unaffordable, congested, dump where there is no room for anyone in the middle class. You have to be rich or on government assistance to live there.
thanks, whos the interviewer¿?
He seemed sober though .I watch a lot of Nirvana and Kurt seems sober to me .
Kurt stated he never was on drugs for interviews or work on his performances. He might be hung over but he said he was never high.
When your addicted to heroin there's no stopping for appearances... within a couple hours of not using you start getting sick and within a day going without you're in full blown withdrawal. For the last year or so of his use he was just using daily to stay feeling normal...rip kurt
@Edith I have not done any hard drugs, however I can admit I am dependant on weed, and let me tell you, I am a completely different unpleasant person without it. It is almost impossible that Kurt could just be sober when he wanted to be, there is a point of no return where it is no longer your choice, and you need it just to be normal
@@Edith1517I saw a video where he's on heroin and he is like soooo different
