Weber Workshops HG-2 vs Weber Workshops Key vs Craig Lyn HG-1 Prime

  • I had the Weber Workshops Key first, but got the HG-2 used and already seasoned.
Been liking the HG-2 coffee quality, for espresso it's always smooth and good, even when it looks like it's going to be a poor shot. But not a fan of the extra physical work (it does take some energy!) and the extra space it takes up since the handle needs to rotate. I'm either going to be selling the Key or the HG-2 since having both are a bit redundant. I wonder if the Key will eventually transition to being as smooth as the HG-2 after more seasoning. It's a slight difference but noticeable when comparing between the two, the KEY still produces great results.
If anyone knows lemme know in the comments.
Also if anyone has compared the Weber Treated 83mm Mazzer burrs to the HG-1 Untreated burrs let me know if I was right about the differences! The HG-1 Prime may be a better value! But I haven't tried it myself.
Like the Lagom P64, think I prefer the silver / anodized aluminum look to black, even though I generally prefer black. The diffuse silvery finish and the way it reflects light is just really pretty!

I've compared the HG-2 with the Weber titanium coated/treated burrs now with the HG-1 with the same burrs, but without the Weber treatment and titanium coating. It was previously believed that burr coatings didn't affect the grind quality or taste but only affected the longevity (giving you much long burr life, but also potentially extending the seasoning period as well!), but I believe more people are noticing that most treated burrs seem to reduce the fines, giving you more flavour clarity and sometimes less body. With these 83mm mazzer conical burrs, we indeed noticed that the uncoated HG1 grinder produced more body and more blended flavour notes, more of a traditional conical burr profile, while the HG-2 had more clarity and less body, more modern flat burr like (sometimes I will get a silky body, but coffees are generally thin from it).
I thought the original HG1 burrs were good too, but the owner of that grinder who mainly does lighter roasted coffee preferred the higher clarity of my HG2 burrs and ended up purchasing a set for his HG1 for himself!

Got the slow bean feeder / anti popcorning add-on for the HG2 (The key got sold) and it was a pain in the butt to install and I'm afraid it will fall apart and end up in the burrs but it might actually make hand grinding for espesso a little easier and maybe improved flavor clarity even further with a slower feed rate also does basically completely eliminate any popcorning.

    Nice comparison Ben.
You can definitely swap the inner and outer burr on these two to check if taste difference is an alignment thing or due to seasoning.

Good idea swapping the burrs around to test... but I don't want to mess with it and end up with two badly aligned or broken expensive grinders :D

Would you recommend upgrading to a HG-1 Prime? Currently have a Eureka Oro SD

You got the first version or the updated 1.1 version of the Eureka SD? I liked the 2nd / updated version of it (Bellows still didn't work very well so I suggest not using the bellows with it since retention is luckily low enough not to be a problem anyway).
I still haven't tried the Craig Lynn HG-1 Prime, so I don't know how different it is from the HG-2 with the treated / coated burrs, it would be cool to compare if I ever get the chance, but I don't want to buy another grinder right now, I have too many and more coming :D
Feature and price wise the HG1 Prime is looking good, but the non coated mazzer burrs MAY be higher body and lower flavour clarity which may be good if that's what you're looking for. I though the HG2 and Weber Key were pretty flat like in their taste profile, with decent flavour clarity, not so high body but it does tend to have a richness that flat burrs don't usually.
Anyway, I don't think it's necessarily and upgrade from the Eureka Oro SD but likely a different experience and different flavour profile, so I think having both would make a good combo.

Most definitely man. I have a 2022 Cremina so I have an affinity to manual and would like to compliment the two.
It’s odd enough I like the look of the wheel on the HG-2, but I also like the smaller footprint of the HG-1 Prime. Go figure 🤷🏽‍♂️
Price-wise the Prime is definitely more appealing considering it’s an enhanced version made from the original creator and it’s nearly $600 less than the HG-2. Think I’ll get the Prime.. we’ll see 😂

@@tusokpoweru Nice, Yeah I think the price difference may be due in part to the supposed pre-seasoning treatment and coating on the burrs on the Weber version.
I do have my HG-2 listed for sale in Toronto, although not sure I really want to sell it yet :D I'd like to compare directly with the HG-1 Prime first!

Yeah the cost of preseasoning, the flywheel, added materials for the base and its transmission. If the HG-1 Prime works just as well while cutting out unnecessary pieces and switching out to a 2.5:1 great ratio that’s a win. Feels like Craig knew where to cut cost to make it more reasonably priced. Nice chat man

    Worst review ever

Haha thanks. I'm not sure I ever claimed it was a review just sharing my experiences and also comparing theoretically with the HG1 prime which I still never got a chance to try.

Im curious, How is it bad and what would you want to see or know exactly? If you're going to criticize be constructive and descriptive. Otherwise what's the point besides making yourself look like an ass.

    Do your homework first,! Rubbish!

What is rubbish exactly? Did I say something inaccurate? Because I've since tested my HG2 against the original HG1 and confirmed my thoughts here along with someone else. Others have also noted that the burrs coatings do seem to affect taste / grind quality. Previously it was believed the coatings just affect the burrs usable life (greatly extending it, which is good for commercial use not super important for home use), even a slight change with coffee gear seems to sometimes make a dramatic difference!

Still waiting for your reply, or did I guess what you meant correctly and it was YOU who needed to do more homework and are rubbish leaving rubbish comments :D
