  • In Dungeons & Dragons, we all have our favorites. And we all have our least favorites.
It's just that most don't have a least favorite class that will get them drawn and quartered by the gaming community!
So this is my least favorite class in all of 5e and the reasoning behind my dislike. I think most are going to disagree with me on this one.

My hot take is I never cared for the Wizard. As someone who started playing with 5e, I feel like the Wizard depends on some outdated mechanics to be fun.
    1. More work for the DM. The wizard can learn any spell on a scroll that they find, but this means the DM has to choose which spells the player gets access to and how often it happens. As someone who primarily DMs I just don't like having that responsibility. It's hard enough to keep a game (and a party) balanced without having to decide how one player essentially levels up out of sync with the rest of the group. Yes, I suppose you can use random tables, but you're still having to decide how often this happens.
    2. My table doesn't put a lot of focus on gold and building up loot in general. We don't use loot tables. I don't run modules. My campaigns are more character/story focused kind of like NADPOD or Dimension 20. Since one of the wizard's primary abilities is to turn gold into spells, that doesn't really do it for me.
    3. They don't have a lot of fun mechanics. Besides the necromancer (which has never been my thing), I feel like all the subclasses are pretty similar. They're all dependent on which spells you can take rather than innate class abilities. Every time I create a character, I take a long look at the wizard and move on.
Anyway, I hope I'm wrong and that there's more to the wizard than I think. What do you think?

I think the thing that makes Wizards fun is something that many don't talk about much. And that is Rituals.
A lot of classes get access to rituals but most don't make use of it because of their limited spells prepared or known.
But the wizard's spellbook gets around this as long as the wizard has the book on their person.
Rituals aren't much use in combat but can really enhance exploration, investigation and role play. I love them and the wizard for making it easier to use them.
That's my hot take on them anyway.

I love the idea of a lawful Good pallie that is really taking his religious fervor too far and is really just evil. I think this wont jell well with parties but maybe for BBEG it would be an interesting final battle.

Any character that is so zealously LG that they've gone all the way around into LE make great dictators.

In my campaign I combine the 4e Anointed Knight and 5e Oath system for traditional "paladins" chosen by the Church
    Then
My Paladin is inspired by a line from 3 5 where the class is a "calling not a choice"
From there the character is/was essentially "tapped" by a Diety to be his champion.
    Player can be devoted faithful
    Or reluctant/ free spirit
Or straight up angry at having their destiny chosen for them
The paladin powers are channel divinity
    Blessings based on diety
    Spell like abilities replace spells

The idea that paladin smiting with every slot is optimal is straight up goofy. Bless, Shield of Faith, Aid and Find Steed are all way better choices than smiting all the time. Many of the subclass Oath spell lists are also good options. Smiting all the time isn't even a possibility if you run more than 2 fights per long rest like you're supposed to. Paladins are strong, but they're not stronger than like...most spellcasters.

Unless you're playing 1 encounter days you should NOT be blowing all spell slots on smites. There are much more useful spells. Also, I'm sorry if I skipped it, but how did you not mention Aura of Protection, when talking about the Paladin's strength. That's literally their strongest key feature.

As I mentioned in the video, I don't deny their strength as a class. I just think some of their features and concepts are problematic.
But if I were to consider the aura of protection feature, I would say the aura size is pretty small and encourages the entire party to be a nice, juicy AOE target even if tge feature helps protect them from it.
Having said that, it is something that seems very thematic to a Paladin so I don't really have issue with it, though I think it's a little overrated.

I agree with your criticisms. That being said, I have an oathbreaker paladin pirate going right now. His original oath was to protect his crew until they all tragically died. The undead flavor is all explained by his crew's ghosts not being able to move on until he can let the pain go.

That sounds pretty cool. I recently played a Paladin in BG3, My oath lasted 2 hours (including all the game intro stuff) before I broke it and became an oathbreaker. It was hilarious.

I wonder. Would the Paladin be considered suitable to be a Gish character. A proper blending of sword and sorcery. Maybe thinking about it that way will make me like it more.

I have never been a fan of the Bard and the Cleric. They are both very powerful, but my ability to latch onto their core and subclass features for roleplay and mechanics purpose is lacking for some reason.

  • @jeffreybond9327

Lack of roleplaying oaths was always a pet-peeve of mine when it came to Paladins. Oath of Vengeance has to be the worst offender by far. People play Vengeance Paladins like they are corrupt cops who uses threats and violence against anyone who doesn't kiss their ass. You are supposed to be punishing those who have done wicked things (like the Punisher), not smiting the shopkeep because they didn't want to give you a discount.
And I also dislike them mechanically for the opposite reason that you like them. They have TOO many split resource pools to the point that they get to have almost all of their cake and eat it too. Smites, Lay on Hands, Channel Divinity, and Aura of Protection all pull from different resource pools. Spell or Smite is the only difficult decision they have to make. Compare that to other classes like any caster and Monk, who are constantly having to weigh which option to use resources on for almost all of their features. Do Paladins have to do that? Nope! Just Smite, get free usage out of your aura, pop your Channel Divinity, then heal yourself and cure some diseases with Lay on Hands. Paladins almost have to make zero decisions. The class is TOO braindead.
