F10 M5 - S63TU Engine Seized

  • I'm very sad to say the engine on my M5 is dead. With only 33K miles on it, it's extremely disappointing. Having the engine on your car seize is probably the worst thing that can happen (besides it getting wrecked).
I'm making this video to share my experience to all who own or are interested in owning an F10 M5. I do not mean to scare anyone away from purchasing this car since it is absolutely amazing. However, I think it's important for everyone to know what they're getting into.

I own a 2016 F10 M5 LCI and I’ve owned it from the start when it was new. I took care of ever since and have had no issues so far. It’s my only car so I have over 60k miles on it already. Im sorry for what happened to your engine, it seems they learned a lot from the mistakes they did with yours and applied it to mine. I’m glad to see yours out of the garage in your newer video.

Sorry to hear this man. I seized my 14 m5 comp last June with 41k miles on it, which is also kind of early for this to happen too. My car is also completely stock, oil change every 6k and always only done work at BMW dealer. I replace the longblock in BMW dealer, but it just felt like I've only reset the timer on the bomb. I'm sharing your feelings man, hope it will be all sorted for you as well!

It's either injector stuck open or rod bearing, fix it (acl bearings), care for it (fuel cleaner) that's literally all there is to it.

I had this same engine oil pump issue on my SRT Jeep. It went out on the highway, i pulled over immediately and the motor died from oil starvation. Luckily i had a warranty but it happens to a lot of performance vehicles brother. Hope you can get yours fixed soon🤙🏾

That's crazy. 4 years ago when I was cross shopping my E63 AMG & M5...I came across lots of threads on M5forum where owners reported their S63TU engine seized without warning. Didn't think there would still be so many cases of it happening 4 years later. I know you said you contributed to the problem, but it sounded like the engine was going to go out sooner or later. I wouldn't say you contributed to it at all because a modern performance engine that can't stand being near the redline for 2-3 seconds without seizing is just ridiculous.

Sorry to hear the news. Being a 92 M3 owner, I am in the market to add a F10 M5. Almost all the cars I come across from 2014 and onwards has 2 to 3 owners. Rarely I have seen someone owning for more 3 yrs. The frequent visits to the dealerships on carfax between oil changes is a pattern too. I am rethinking the entire purchase and your video may help me greatly. Thank you.

well i am driving the early F10 M5 , based on the Vin number , my production year stated in 2011, but received in 2012.Its my weekend car and car age is 10 years by now. Engine running stock till now and only mod was exhaust changed to full GTC Meisterschaft exhaust for better deep V8 growl after the warranty ended, have drove till top speed of 270 kmh (soft limiter) cutoff and hitting red line occasionally, car is 57K miles on it, always change my Engine oil every 6K miles, was using Castrol Edge 5-40 , and since 2018, been using Shell Power 0-40. Never had any major issue except had water leak, changed the hose, spark plug, ignition coil , other then that, regular service. I had a friend using E92 M3, and his car had reach 124K miles and still running ok, never change the Rod till now. My takeaway is maybe some car has tighter production tolerance; some might be looser. My local BMW manager told me as long u keep your stock,, your car should be able to live longer without any major issue. And i only feed her with premium fuel .Just my sharing.

I took my Lexus RCF on the tail of the dragon, and for hours I was banging redline in 2nd gear and shifting to 3rd, then downshifting into 2nd to engine brake for turns and then going right back to 3rd. Then I drove it home 3 hours away without a single issue.
I LOVE what the M cars are capable of and truly they drive like nothing else on the road. Stuff like this scares me tho. The Lexus falls short in some performance categories but I bet the hell out of it with no worries.

The car can be put in neutral in emergency if you bother to read the manual, you will have to remove several trims surrounding the shifter, and it’s right under the soft pad. You will have to move the lever to the right and that will put the car in N.

I killed my 2015 M5 Competition about a month ago. Rod bearings on cylinder 4&8. Was running great then I heard the noise on a drive. 82k miles. Pure Performance in Houston did a full rebuild. Picking it up this Friday. Cylinder 8 piston was really clean, so the shop figures excess fuel diluted the oil.

Killed my 2014 M6 gc last November. Only 25,000 miles... regular maintenance and everything. Happened out of the blue doing like 100mph cruising nothing crazy. Crazy part was I was driving my friend to the shop to check on his engine rebuild (Range Rover) lol.... Mind you I did tail of the dragon a few months before and really pushed the car...
Thankfully, my local shop helped to get my third party warranty to approve after a long 6 months just last week. $29K out of them. Lowkey had DME stage 2+catless DPs too.
I can either go OEM spend $8,000 more and get factory engine + 2 year warranty or I can go forged....
Basically, I have $31,000 to spend since I had to pay a $2,000 tear down.
I reached out to Pure Performance last week too.. what package did you get and what did you pay? Forged or just rebuild?
I need to decide this week so I can get back on the road!!!! I don’t think I want to go factory because I feel like I will run into the same problem again.
Forged with stage 2 dme tune should be my ideal option? Agree? Disagree? Why?
      Thanks!

Redlining it like that shouldn’t have been what broke the engine. That was almost certainly just the straw that broke the camels back. These are performance engines made to be driven hard. This is clearly from either a significant defect in the oil pump, or the prior owner absolutely destroyed it.

First, I am sorry you had to go through this.
Second, seeing as though BMW continues to have Rod Bearing issues from the e92 and e60 Gen to your current but not new Gen, I do not understand why some of you continue to buy these cars.
At what point do all of the die-hard BMW fanatics come together and start demanding more reliability from BMW's products.
I am here to tell you, that this is not normal. All of you (BMW M) owners have been programmed to think this is acceptable. I am here to tell you, it is not...
This is completely unacceptable. You cannot claim to be the 'The Ultimate Driving Machine' when they are constantly in for major and I mean MAJOR repairs...
Just look at the e60 resale value...
The regular BMW N63 engine is no better either. All of you need to start boycotting this company, and I am really avoiding them. If you can do all the maintenance and repair work yourself then hats off to you because you will be putting those skills to work.
You said it best, the issues you mentioned are widely known, and BMW only offers to cover half of the repairs?
No thank you. BMW is playing all of you for a fool.

Certainly, same thing applies to the AMG engines. Having owned both the M6 and CLS63 I've accidentally done this on both cars and this never happened. 2-3 secs at redline won't blow the engine. This was due to something already being wrong, and it probably just decided to go at that particular time. It definitely sucks, but it comes with these performance engines.

I asked the head mechanic if he has heard of M5’s seizing and his response was he had but he thinks the owners are running way too thin of an oil inside the engine. M5 engines are great but they like what they like. I decided to increase the viscosity of my oil just a bit and I can actually tell a difference in performance...... Messed up by hanging at red-line for 3 seconds? I used to hang at red-line all the time on my old turbo stock block Honda. Shit never failed and I beat on it for like a year. BMW engines have become increasingly more complex in this race with other manufactures to stay ahead of the curve on specs. They've become obsessed with the numbers. The cars have all these weird plastic fucking bits and t-hoses and bizarrely routed plumbing. Then you run with a v-mount turbo and all that heat is not being sucked out. None of that stuff is built to last. They want you to buy another one in 1 year. That's their business model.

So you drove the car cold, in first gear at high revs for many seconds and you act surprised your engine blew… its not the engines fault or BMW’s. Own it, you blew it.
Many modern cars have tight tolerances that need to be fully warm (oil not just water, that’s why BMW’s have oil temp gauges and changing rev counter red line limits) because its so important) before reving the engine hard.
