As a jet engine technician, we relay a lot on oil analysis as we can monitor the wear trend on the engine. That has saved many engine failures during flight.....you do not want to have an engine shut down during flight.

Superb video mate, huge amount of informative content, thanks! By taking the occasion, I have a question - are you familiar with how this engine behaves with the latest M5 F90 from 2018/2022? I'm really interested in owning one as a daily in a long term, but after some research, I'm quite scared that it's going to spend more time at the dealer rather than on the road 😅

I am driving my F10 M5 for past 7 years , this is my weekend car , my only issue is I had is oil leak in rear differential axel , transmission oil leak from the pan , numerous coolant leak so prepared to change the hose , but engine wise I would say no major issue , been changing oil every 8k km and always topping up if you drive hard , she does burn Oil , overall it’s a great car 🚙

Most of your points here are due to infrequent oil changes.
In my opinion these long oil change intervals are a con.. I get the feeling that BMW has a brainwashing scheme going here.
After a year or so in the sump the impurities in it will harden seals and generally mess things up.
The people I know who build performance engines always recommend very frequent oil changes. They would change their oil 4 to 6 times as often as BMW CBS indicates.
I refuse to leave oil in an engine on anything for more than a year.

I have a 2016 B6 Alpina Gran Coupe, 52000 miles, always serviced at the dealer. NEVER NEVER ABUSED. Driving 30 mph I had an engine seizure. BMW is putting a brand new engine in. The estimate was $40,000 and I got them to pay for 75% of it which is a blessing considering the car's been out of warranty for just over 40 months. The engine should be coming in this week. I love BMWs but the more I research the more I see the same problems. Is that particular engine prone for failure? Because the car is rare theirs not much info available.....

I can’t believe BMW now make cars with these sort of major issues. I have been a BMW man for over 45 years. Owning E21 323i, E30 325iS, E24 635csi, E46 M3, and E60 530i. All of these engines other than a few small issues have been fabulous. I have been thinking about getting an M6 originally an E63 and now an F10. I was scared off by the V10 and the V8 in the E92 M3 and now the latest S63 engines have got me scared off too. Where does this leave me? I am not a Merc man nor an Audi fan as this would seem treacherous. I can’t afford to buy a new one, and buying secondhand is the only way I can afford this luxury brand. This has turned me off this once great marque. I will keep my beloved E24 and perhaps M3 but I will be buying Japanese from now on the thought of it just makes me feel bland, but The consolation is I won’t be broke either. BMW pick your act up !!!

    Hello Doctor!
Hope you are keeping safe and healthy during these difficult times.
I was not sure where I could ask and see if you have come across anything like this, so here I am asking.
I have a 2005 BMW X5 3.0i. The past few months the following lights have come on EML, 4x4, Emergency Brake, and Engine light. When the engine light is on alone the car still drives fine. But when it is accompanied by the aforementioned lights, the car still drives, but acceleration above 50 Km becomes hard and the gas peddle becomes harder to push on. I have nooooooooo idea as to what the issue could be. I have taken the car into my amazing mechanic, but unfortunately the lights went off by the time it got there. They go on and come off at the most random of times. Sometimes they don't come on for a month and then at other times they will come off and on three times a day.
If anyone has experienced this very random and weird issue before, I would sincerely appreciate you sharing with me your experiences and most importantly solutions as well!
    Most sincere regards,

Rod bearing advice was spot on!
My X5M (e70) s63 engine just failed with only 49,000 miles. Multiple rod bearing spun causing catastrophic failure. (It Looked as if the bearing disintegrated!) The BMW dealership wanted $36,000 for a new engine & install. Currently having the engine rebuilt at half that price.

I guess after a certain amount of time heating-cooling cycles will put high stresses on the material so that the tolerances intended by the manufacturer cannot be kept. Remember that heating the engine up causes thermal expansion. Different parts, especially if made of different alloys/materials will expand at individual rates. The mismatch between different expansion rates causes thermomechanical stress.

why are you talking about a m5 v10 when the video is about s63 2021 models?!

Not one mechanic suggested checking/replacing rod bearings on my 2012 X5M S63, dealer or bimmer shop. Total engine seize at 108k miles. All maintenance done on a regular basis, and did not ignore any issues. Oil always changed 5-7k and topped off every 1k miles. BMW failed when they engineered this engine! Later changes were a bandaid to a failed design. Stay away from this car, and for me all BMWs.

I'm a 3-time BMW owner (E36 328, E46 M3, F39 X2). BMWs are notorious for design defects, in particular, the M cars. On the E46 M3, the VANOS and the RACP are flawed. There is no other way to describe them. The S54 engines also go through rod bearings. The N63 / S63 are probably the most flawed engines ever built by BMW. If they weren't so flawed, there would not have been "customer care packages" and class action lawsuits. Some people had to spend thousands on repairs, even people who took care of the engines. You covered most of the issues, but you downplayed the valve guides and valve seals and you also didn't mention timing chains and chain guides. For you to say no BMWs are unreliable, I'd say you have a bad case of stockholm syndrome.

Sorry to tell you and correct you here, In the Uk there was never ever any of these said issues on ANY of the S63 OR the N63, because people are responsible owners and we ain’t given all the crap like you are over there. There was only ever a customer care package given to the USA as they didn’t realise there was so many imbeciles buying there cars, let me tell you before you come up here like the rest of your folks do, do not compare OUR UK BMWS to your American ones. We do NOT suffer ANY OF THE ISSUES you guys face believe me. BMW is literally one of the cheapest and most realisable cars in the Uk and even people on a £500 a month income can afford them there that cheap and garage costs well even cheaper. Why is that because we have something called the good garage scheme which means garages and main dealers cannot charge what they “Want” it’s set by the goverment and they set the prices. Your coming up here like there unreliable it’s the way you lot drive them over there and the way you maintain them, most in the USA maintain them on the cheap when they can’t afford them and that’s why they fail. It’s not the brand that’s a failure it’s the USA people which is said by Germany themselves many many times. This is EXACTLY why you don’t get certain BMWs like we get here, that have a very very reliable reputation because you would destroy that reputation, when people here know 150% these other models you don’t get don’t have issues. It’s no wonder Bmw wanted to pull out of your country. All these things you have mentioned here it’s all s**t as none of this happened in the Uk and many many many people are driving around in F10 M5 here for many many many years without a single issue since the moment they purchased it. How about go look on the Uk forums and the Uk Facebook pages maybe that will shock you how “Real” owners look after there cars. And give you a shock to see how reliable they are over here. And IM CORRECT NO BMW IS UNRELIABLE FOR ME ! And I state that as I have a trade account with BMW which means any parts I need I get them at 65% discount from BMW which I fix them all myself electronically and mechanically therefore not making it unreliable for me and the rest of the people I fix there cars for free which is 1000s in the Uk.

@@BMWDoctor If you think every N63 or S63 that failed in NA is because of the owner, you are mistaken. Of course there are people that treat their cars like crap, because they are leased, but there are plenty of enthusiasts that took care of their cars because they bought their cars to appreciate, who had their engines fail.
S54 VANOS fails around the world, because BMW uses crap buna seals. The E46 M3 RACP fails around the world because it's a shitty weak design.
Anyway, there is no point arguing. Keep up the great videos.

@@BMWDoctorOne final reply. It's BMW that sets the service interval, which is not sufficient. If there's one thing that any performance engine needs, it's frequent oil changes. For my M3, it's something ridiculous like 22000 kms. It should be half of that. Another difference between UK and North America is the climate. There are places in Northern USA and Canada that have huge temperature differences between summer and winter (e.g., +35 C to -45 C in Edmonton). Temperatures can hit well over 40C in the summer in North America. The UK has much less variation and less extreme heat and cold, which likely has something to do with there being fewer problems with these engines. Anyway...

    • @BMWDoctor
      @BMWDoctor  2 роки тому +4

No bro your very wrong, I speak to Bmw in Munich and many other manafacturers. Let me tell you it’s not the climate ! Have you ever removed a part from a BMW warranty car ? If you ain’t you wouldn’t know. BMW send China faulty parts to the USA as what Bmw have said themselves it’s because THEY CAN. As they said Americans are rich and will pay out there pocket for anything that needs doing or can get loans very easily to pay for it. Here in the Uk that’s not the case we have a thing called “Quality Control” which every part is checked at the factory by someone in the Uk and they are watched with everything they are doing and fitting to there cars. Why do you think we have BMW engine factory’s in the UK and you don’t have any in the USA ? They have already said the Uk cannot afford big prices so no point in them making the cars unreliable for here and the rest of the EU and why do you think they only send you all the crap models ? We we get all the reliable diesel models and have hardly ANY issues. This isn’t just about climate believe me on that I speak to (A lot) of people in Germany. It’s a known fact what is fitted to your cars engines , suspension , and the chassis is not the sane which is getting sent over the world. But that’s because you are there biggest contributor and money maker because you guys py through your nose to own this car. The big difference here is WE WONT and they know that like many many celebrity’s here have done gone over to Mercedes and so has many people I know and BMW learned from that. You contribute for BMW to make cars exclusively for the Uk and America get nothing in return everything you get we get and even more. And why do you think they do that ? Mate when you buy BMWs there abd you pay HIGH HIGH prices it’s because your funding for us. Why you think we get all m sports from factory easy here with all options ? It ain’t a added extra and we don’t get cream interior ? Every car here is m sport Bmw is one of the cheapest cars in the Uk and that isn’t a joke. You can pick up broken F10 for under £1000 here. But in the USA Jesus you guys are still paying $6-7k for a E46 I would never ever give that and for a piece of s**t model aswell !! Not even a m sport or 330i convertible I mean I would only give £900 for a 330i convertible m sport E46 I have never seen a car market for BMW so strong. But you also have to factor in a lot of you guys over there seem to think you can ALL own these cars and when they go wrong you wanna blame the manafacturer as I said I don’t blame BMW I blame you as a owner ! That’s just it I blame the owner. Sorry that car never asked to be picked go and buy a Chevy or dodge, I don’t know why many of you buy a BMW like you think it’s some race car I mean you have people buying 328i like it’s a race car. Go and buy a Honda you wanna buy Bmw to look good and BMW will make you look like a 🛎 end by the time it’s finished with you. Because your a idiot to own it, one thing I learned with these cars some have more bad luck then others which means one thing the brand don’t like you ! And the car don’t like you ! So don’t go back. That’s why I never went back to Ford as that was more unreliable for me then a BMW. Everyone I got broke it means that car wasn’t for me.

@BMWDoctor failed rod bearings have nothing to do with a UK or USA, your comment is absurd. Part of the problem with the V8 M3 was BMW idiotically calling for 10W‐60 when owners running 5W-30 have few problems.
As far as oil testing, use oilanalyzers
Finally, and high boost engine needs a catch can because they all have blowby (especially bad with DI engines)
