I did a project on bleeding fairy helmets once! They’re really cool. When the fruiting bodies are damaged, they leak a red latex that looks just like blood! They’re purple-pink in color, and are bioluminescent, but not an amount detectable to human eyes. Very nice.
Your hat is ADORABLE! Also, I love that you remember about Half-Life. (I'm an Eastern European and I could tell between the edible and the not-so-edible shrooms while you picked them. It's a skill we get from our grandmothers in those parts. The compulsion to scream: "Those would make great pasta sauce, just add onions and cream!" was Strong, ngl.)
Seeing these pictures of Binx (?) and Frodo up on the shelf makes me crave Bag End - ish portraits of them, like Bilbo's parents over the fireplace, possibly Frodo in his cute smoking jacket, and Binx in a Hobbit dress.
My daughter and I watch every one of your videos all snuggled up on the couch or at my work. Truly just a delight to find something we can enjoy together. Thank you for bringing my teen and I a little fun. Love the mushroom hat! The two of us looked at each other and gave a little sqqquuueeeeaa of excitement when we saw the preview.
So glad someone's finally giving love to their local mushrooms instead of doing the generic fly Agaric. There's so many beautiful mushrooms here in the US and around the world that could be done! Love it!
Hope you manage to read this Rachel. Your videos are helping me through a very bad bout of depression, they are all I can watch, all I want to do. Thank you 🙏🏻
velvet might work well as a lining for the head hole--it is fairly common, as it gives the hat a little grip. You may still need a tie of some kind, if you're wearing it with a wig, but it will give more security to hair.
There were so many mushroom hatted people at Washington's Renaissance Faire this year! Easily dozens of them and each had a fun spin on their fungusness.
We had a lot here in California at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire! Seems 2022 was the year of mushroom looks at faires! Everyone was so cute and sadly by the time I found what booth most people bought their hats from (though some were home made), they had long since sold out.
A lot of mushroom hats and mushroom outfits every weekend at the faire in Michigan so far. :) It's always so fun to see everyone's take on the mushroom hats.
Also here in the Ohio Renaissance Festival! I actually asked someone what was going on since I saw so many when I hadn't seen any at previous festivals
Hi Rachel! I have been sick for the past two months and watching your videos have helped me to relax and distract my mind from all the crap. So just know that your floortrolling really, actually helps people❤️
As a Graphic Design student I definitely recommend using spray adhesive outside next time lol. We use it all the time for projects and it's nasty stuff. Loved the spontaneous project Rachel!
I literally got asthma for a week after using spray adhesive, #artstudiolife and I don't even have asthma. I learned my lesson. The stuff works but use it with proper ventilation or outside.
And maybe put out the candles since it’s aerosol and can easily float over the flame behind you!🤯😱 Love the video though and all your little talking and singing to yourself as usual. The outtakes were all very relatable❣️ Thank you for the rain sequence and mushroom hunt. 💖🍂🍄✨
Really! You don’t want those particles in your lungs, much less the chemicals that they float on. I’m just •stunned• that you didn’t read the precautions on the label, Rachel dear! 😜
I'm from one of those European countries in which we pick up forest mushrooms and eat them (the edible ones, obviously) so I definitely recognize yours to be a mushroom and I think it's really cute that you went for a different kind, I really like it this way and I also like the burned edges because wild mushrooms often get some spots. One idea is also to make a white hole on top to make it look like a snail ate part of it! I really love the video, made me smile!
I didn't think it was possible...but the Gandalf transformation video has been replaced as my absolute favorite Rachel video! I enjoy every part of this video so much! The lofi bits and weather shots particularly. I would so vibe to a three hour video of just the rainy window shot with the chill music, haha. Thanks for a pure delight. Helped me on a night I was depressed.
How can you have such ethereal beauty? I swear you are a literal fairy princess. I'm pretty sure I gasped at the reveal because of how much you were glowing.
note on the smoothing process of the paper mache clay: as Jonni also notes in her videos, the easiest way to get a smooth surface is to not sand it, but wait till it's dry and then put on a thin, second layer of just the dry wall joint compound over it! it will fill all little bumps and unevenness without any effort at all and leave a super smooth surface ^^ i've tried it out myself and it works like a charm!
Fun fact! Rachel's mushroom dress video from a while ago inspired me to make a whole mushroom costume for Halloween, and I ended up making a hat like this. I'm so excited and intrigued to see her process! 🍄💜
I love the mushroom hat just as much as I love the casual (but pretty impressive) Jennifer Coolidge impersonation Rachel slips in every now and then. 10/10 content.
Okay, this is so perfect! It's like the stars aligned! I have a D&D character (Druid) who wears a mushroom cap for a hat. It's so amazing to see how the concept would look in real life. You're incredible!
Turned out great ! 2 items you NEED for your craft endeavors are 1) Shop vac and 2) BOX FANS ! [These should be going on sale soon!] Box fans can fit in windows, or sit on floors or stools. By increasing air flow you decrease drying time. Glad you found Jonni. She is SO talented ! 😍
This oversized mushroom hat still fits your new “Borrowers” aesthetic. You could make a whole autumn nature themed “Maksiatures” outfit. Giant acorn bag, giant color changing leaf skirt, giant sunflower sun hat, giant apple skin for the shirt inspiration, etc. 🍂
The fact you keep trying new things AND you do it on camera is so inspiring to me because I have such a strong fear of failure and anxiety about performing something I'm not a hundred percent sure of in front of other people. It shows how to build up that feeling of self assurance, that you believe in yourself to handle obstacles and figure it out. I love that.
And get like a blue wig and long long curly hair extensions that are attached to the hat, along with ruffled fabric. And then the outfit would be like a bright colored tight dress or bralette and massive bell bottom underneath a translucent gauzey frilly dress and holographic accessories. Maybe some of that light up fabric
When I first watched this it was almost 11pm and I legit thought that Rachel just magically transformed her hair… it’s a very good wig. She looked effing magical👌♥️
As an amateur mycologist and biologist, the mushroom collection montage was *chefs kiss* so many good shrooms out there Fun shroom fact: a lot of Boletus species will change color if you poke them/bruise them!
hey, i looked around and didnt see anyone comment this so i might as well. For anyone that wants to pick mushrooms like rachel, make sure you have a pocket knife or some siccors with you, and cut the stem at the base, even if its easy allways try to not rip it out with the little "roots" like shown in the video. These roots grow new mushrooms. If done correctly the same type of mushroom will grow over and over every year on the same spot you gathered them from. (if ripped, you can slowly erradicate all the mushrooms from growing in these places, because they cant properly spread) Source: Grandparents that live in the forest, and that pick mushrooms for eating every autum witha set route with all the places they grow on. Also seen on some norwegian documentaries. Its quite painfull to see the mushrooms being ripped out :"( But i loved the video either way, such a fun and cute craft, you did great Rachel!
Rachel! We do have fly agaric here in Mass! Its not the red color that is commonly depicted though. Here we get fly agarics that are more of a beigey yellow or orange. They still have the distinct white spots though!
I actually went as a fly agaric for halloween once as a kid 😅 my hat was only made from construction paper but that was enough for a 5-year-old. I absolutely loved it 🍄🥰
Me: "What is she ever gonna DO with that hat?" My daughter: "If you think she wont wear that while she just works around the house, then you dont know Rachel Maksy!" 🤣🤣🤣
I love it so much that you made it realistic! It's so perfect and looks a lot like a porcini or just the type of mushroom I would typically see. The burnt rim part is actually what really sells it for me :))
Aww, I'm sure Massachusetts has all kinds of cool mushrooms! I think an inky cap or shaggy mane would make a super cute hat. Fun fact, inky caps are edible but turn toxic and potentially deadly when consumed with alcohol. Even a small amount of alcohol consumed within 3 days of eating the inky caps can make you violently ill!🤗
not kidding, I was planning to be a mushroom for this Halloween. Its happened a couple of times when I thought of how lovely and helpful your videos are and never would I have thought this would come out in such a perfect time! :D
you have to look at the gills of the mushroom when identifying and the stalk. The white one on 17:56 looks to be a death cap, from what I can tell, very poisonous.
At least in this case, none of the ingredients are toxic or harmful substances you don't want to expose food equipment to... or anything that will ruin appliances, as long as it's cleaned up right away.
❤ 9:15 ... you are definitely a tornado ... waaayyyy off the charts!! & who knew mushrooms were so freakin gawugeous!! Surfacing from a long beginnings of a semester! So so happy to break here!! Thank you!!!
I took a stab at identifying some of the 'shrooms because I can never leave a mystery alone! :D Guesses in order of appearance: 17:53 'Yellow Dust Amanita' ; 17:56 'White Dapperling'; 18:01 Boletus innixus (as Rachel says); 18:04 'Frosty Funnel'; 18:30 'Pink Domecap'; and Entoloma cetratum (no fun name found)
the English names for mushrooms sound so fancy and proper while the Russian (my first and main language) sound v simple. for example: fly agaric = мухомор (muhomor) which means "fly killer". some others are сыроежка - "one that could be eaten raw", лисичка - "little fox", рыжик - "little ginger" (as in hair color), белый - "white", подберёзовик - "under a birch tree" and зонтик - "little umbrella". I don't know the English names for these so I'm sorry 😭

LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life. I became a better version of myself This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. A bunch of bad thought / behavior patterns were broken. One of these was pretty bad OCD that made me wash my hands a lot. It gave me a lot of hope that things will be fine, this is the one thing that I heard throughout the trip: Everything is alright. The main reason for the trip was my severe depression and it definitely helped me (although it's not gone). Before all I could do was lay in bed. Same here. I did not see that coming, so funny!
Same same same!!😂
Rachel videos always make my day.
There is a Mushroom book called “Everything the Rain Promises and More” that can be super helpful for identification and the cover photo is fantastic!
That is an AMAZING & poetic name for a mushroom identification book🍄🍄🍄...
Fantastic book! Its focus is the PNW/western US, some crossover, but not the best for New England mycology.
That's the guy holding a random musical instrument on the front, right?
@@lyndseycadoo8133 that’s the one!
i have it and looking up the mushroom Rachel picked right now.
I got super excited thinking "omg Rachel finally bit the bullet and went to a professional to get her hair color corrected, it looks so good!" And then in a shocking anime betrayal you bought a wig. Well played madam. The hat looks fantastic! It was a fun idea to make it look like your every day mushroom. I think it would actually look really awesome with a green dress to mimic grass. Also, I now have this mental image of you has a ruthless business woman who pretends to be a quirky millennial and truthfully I would still support you if only for your dedication to the bit
I did a project on bleeding fairy helmets once! They’re really cool. When the fruiting bodies are damaged, they leak a red latex that looks just like blood! They’re purple-pink in color, and are bioluminescent, but not an amount detectable to human eyes. Very nice.
THANK YOU for making a mushroom craft that isn’t a toadstool. The wonderful world of mushrooms is so so more elaborate 👏
You could even wear this with your borrower’s outfit!
Great idea!!
This will go perfect with Rachel's potato dress. 🤣🥔🍄

Soup outfit!!
Same
I've got it on both sides; Czech/Armenian. (We also overdo it on holidays.)
Seeing these pictures of Binx (?) and Frodo up on the shelf makes me crave Bag End - ish portraits of them, like Bilbo's parents over the fireplace, possibly Frodo in his cute smoking jacket, and Binx in a Hobbit dress.
I feel like Rachel makes every craft project I yearned to do a small child, but does it 1000 times better than I would have. Living the DREAM!
All of Rachel’s crafting give me “whisky grandpa, but make it Jenna marbles humour”
Rachel is single-handedly creating the aesthetic of forage-core with these projects 😍😍
*Bilbo bagins:* "Spread thin like butter scraped over too much bread."
*Rachel:* 0:16- 0:20 😂
For a sec I thought she was gonna do the veggie tales verison "spread like too much pudding over ham"
So glad someone's finally giving love to their local mushrooms instead of doing the generic fly Agaric. There's so many beautiful mushrooms here in the US and around the world that could be done! Love it!
The time of year is upon us for Rachel to be the autumn queen she is
A true artist gives people not just what they want, but what they didn’t know that they need.
Hope you manage to read this Rachel. Your videos are helping me through a very bad bout of depression, they are all I can watch, all I want to do. Thank you 🙏🏻
I feel this, and I wish you comfort and friendliness all around you, until it's better. ❤
Currently 4 vids in into my comfort Rachel time while working... somehow this makes me concentrate more hehe. Thank you for your presence.
velvet might work well as a lining for the head hole--it is fairly common, as it gives the hat a little grip. You may still need a tie of some kind, if you're wearing it with a wig, but it will give more security to hair.
"stereotypical lunchlady in a coming of age movie" made me wheeze! The hat looks fabulous!
The ACCURACY tho!!! 🤣🤣
There were so many mushroom hatted people at Washington's Renaissance Faire this year! Easily dozens of them and each had a fun spin on their fungusness.
I went this year! I loved the mush hats so much I picked myself up one from a vendor this year
We had a lot here in California at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire!
I love that
Hi Rachel! I have been sick for the past two months and watching your videos have helped me to relax and distract my mind from all the crap. So just know that your floortrolling really, actually helps people❤️
Not the mushroom hat we asked for, but the mushroom we needed
As a Graphic Design student I definitely recommend using spray adhesive outside next time lol. We use it all the time for projects and it's nasty stuff. Loved the spontaneous project Rachel!
And wear a mask
I literally got asthma for a week after using spray adhesive, #artstudiolife and I don't even have asthma. I learned my lesson. The stuff works but use it with proper ventilation or outside.
And maybe put out the candles since it’s aerosol and can easily float over the flame behind you!🤯😱
Love the video though and all your little talking and singing to yourself as usual. The outtakes were all very relatable❣️
Thank you for the rain sequence and mushroom hunt. 💖🍂🍄✨
Oooh, she could make a snail to go on it!
... and then put a little snail on it! 🐌🐌🐌
😍
Or a mouse 🐀🐁
I didn't think it was possible...but the Gandalf transformation video has been replaced as my absolute favorite Rachel video! I enjoy every part of this video so much! The lofi bits and weather shots particularly. I would so vibe to a three hour video of just the rainy window shot with the chill music, haha. Thanks for a pure delight. Helped me on a night I was depressed.
How can you have such ethereal beauty? I swear you are a literal fairy princess. I'm pretty sure I gasped at the reveal because of how much you were glowing.
note on the smoothing process of the paper mache clay: as Jonni also notes in her videos, the easiest way to get a smooth surface is to not sand it, but wait till it's dry and then put on a thin, second layer of just the dry wall joint compound over it! it will fill all little bumps and unevenness without any effort at all and leave a super smooth surface ^^ i've tried it out myself and it works like a charm!
watching rachel spread paper mache on a mushroom hat is my kind of asmr
Fun fact! Rachel's mushroom dress video from a while ago inspired me to make a whole mushroom costume for Halloween, and I ended up making a hat like this. I'm so excited and intrigued to see her process! 🍄💜
Oh cool! My friend did that too :)
My kiddo loved watching this video with me, and she wants a mushroom costume now. 😊 This was lovely!
"I don't need the gym, I do craft" must be the truthest words ever spoken.
Need that on a t-shirt! 😂
The way I need “I don’t need the gym, I do crafts” on a shirt is dire. Lol
little fabric paint and you can craft it up yourself haha
I absolutely ADORE your little hairpiece during the day 2 morning segment. It’s so cute!
The mushroom hat is adorbs, and you wear fungus well, my dear. But hear me out: make it a jellyfish.
We NEED a jellyfish hat sequel!!!
Princess Jellyfish!?
@@FeralFelineFriend I mean... Super Mario *does* have that underwater level....
It works.
Well now I need to see a jellyfish hat.
As an amateur mycologist and biologist, the mushroom collection montage was *chefs kiss* so many good shrooms out there
Fun shroom fact: a lot of Boletus species will change color if you poke them/bruise them!
the design, combined with the simple dress is soooo beautiful!
No overdoing, just... It is what it is and I LOVE it!
"It doesn't have to be perfect...except skyscrapers."
I love going out in nature and foraging for naturally-growing Skyscrapers :D
hey, i looked around and didnt see anyone comment this so i might as well.
(if ripped, you can slowly erradicate all the mushrooms from growing in these places, because they cant properly spread)
Source: Grandparents that live in the forest, and that pick mushrooms for eating every autum witha set route with all the places they grow on. Also seen on some norwegian documentaries.
Its quite painfull to see the mushrooms being ripped out :"(
But i loved the video either way, such a fun and cute craft, you did great Rachel!
From what Ive read that is mostly a myth. Cut or pluck it doesnt really matter in terms of regrowth as the mycelium is in the ground.
@@TallTeenTurtle Yes, this. The research suggests it doesn't matter much.
Rachel! We do have fly agaric here in Mass! Its not the red color that is commonly depicted though. Here we get fly agarics that are more of a beigey yellow or orange. They still have the distinct white spots though!
I'm absolutely screaming this needs to be my Halloween costume
I actually went as a fly agaric for halloween once as a kid 😅 my hat was only made from construction paper but that was enough for a 5-year-old. I absolutely loved it 🍄🥰

My child decided they were going to be a mushroom a couple weeks ago! Great timing
Me: "What is she ever gonna DO with that hat?"
My daughter: "If you think she wont wear that while she just works around the house, then you dont know Rachel Maksy!"
🤣🤣🤣
I love it so much that you made it realistic! It's so perfect and looks a lot like a porcini or just the type of mushroom I would typically see. The burnt rim part is actually what really sells it for me :))
Mushroom hat video gives me so much serotonin in these dark and trying times. Thank you, Rach.
Sounds like the setup for a murder-mystery novel.
There are all sorts of mushrooms in Massachusetts (including the fly agaric) lol
@@corgiw7281 And Shauna, the OP, be the villian. I just find the 🤗 emoji kinda suspiciously placed. 😂
@@mlck24 Ooh, I've always wanted to be a villain! You know, in a book or something, not real life...😏😅
not kidding, I was planning to be a mushroom for this Halloween. Its happened a couple of times when I thought of how lovely and helpful your videos are and never would I have thought this would come out in such a perfect time! :D
the matching of the sound of tape to the music is fantastic
That's so cute! You could make fabric covers to change it up whenever you want to, they'd look like large shower caps
you have to look at the gills of the mushroom when identifying and the stalk. The white one on 17:56 looks to be a death cap, from what I can tell, very poisonous.
The look on my face when she made the goop with her everyday cooking utensils. Girl, (please) get thee a crafting kitchen set secondhand! 😮😅😂

At least in this case, none of the ingredients are toxic or harmful substances you don't want to expose food equipment to... or anything that will ruin appliances, as long as it's cleaned up right away.
Okay but now, we need wings, and an ethereal dress. Mushroom fairy please 😍
❤ 9:15 ... you are definitely a tornado ... waaayyyy off the charts!! & who knew mushrooms were so freakin gawugeous!! Surfacing from a long beginnings of a semester! So so happy to break here!! Thank you!!!
I love the way the “burned” part looks! What a fun project ❤
I took a stab at identifying some of the 'shrooms because I can never leave a mystery alone! :D
Guesses in order of appearance: 17:53 'Yellow Dust Amanita' ; 17:56 'White Dapperling'; 18:01 Boletus innixus (as Rachel says); 18:04 'Frosty Funnel'; 18:30 'Pink Domecap'; and Entoloma cetratum (no fun name found)
the English names for mushrooms sound so fancy and proper while the Russian (my first and main language) sound v simple. for example: fly agaric = мухомор (muhomor) which means "fly killer". some others are сыроежка - "one that could be eaten raw", лисичка - "little fox", рыжик - "little ginger" (as in hair color), белый - "white", подберёзовик - "under a birch tree" and зонтик - "little umbrella". I don't know the English names for these so I'm sorry 😭
Looks like the frosty funnel may actually be a russula?
No, definitely asked telepathically. So kind of you to oblige
YESSS I LOVE THE MUSHROOM PROJECTS thank you for fueling the cottagecore vibes Rachel 🥰🥰
Psychedelic’s definitely have potential to deal with mental health symptoms like anxiety and depression, I would like to try them again but it’s just so hard to source here
Psychedelics are the reason why i didn’t take my life when i was at my end. I was stripped of my ego and saw the beauty of life and interconnectivity and even though i still battle anxiety and depression, I’m doing better everyday and will never think in such a self destructive way again.
LSD and mushrooms completely changed my whole outlook on life. I became a better version of myself
This experience gave me a lot of confidence about my self and my body. Now I am trying to rebuild my life one step at a time which wasn't possible before."

I remember tagging you in an illustration of little forest nymphs in mushroom hats! Your followers did demand it!
I DID ASK. I rewatched the mushroom sleeves like a thousand times and wished for more mushroom content
Thinking things should be easy and having them take 10x longer than they should is me most of the time, so I feel you on that. The finished mushroom hat is so cute though, so the time definitely paid off!

Genuinely love how she made this so much harder than it needs to be 🤣 Of the tutorials I've seen for making mushroom hats, they just make the frame/base of cardboard and then cover it with fabric. Quick (ish) and easy
Never have I even seen such a whimsical, adorable presenter as you. I've spent 83 years being an extreme introvert and now I see the error of my ways through you. I guess it is just something you are born with or not. Thank you for a delightful half hour. Your mushroom hat is fantastic, but way too involved for me.
