Amazing transformation, Dave. That truck looks really whethered from the elements and time. For a first attempt, it's gone really well. Your a natural at destruction!

Keep it at it, Dave. That's the only way to learn. It's pretty good if it's your first attempt. Sanding is a good first step on gloss surfaces. To get the acrylics to stick and stay, it needs some tooth to the surface to stick. Apply a light coat of flat primer or dullcote. It needs to be flat. The dullcote will also frost the window glass to look like aged glass. Mask it or remove the glass if it's to be clear. Using multiple colors is the right approach. Really thin the acrylic craft paints and apply thin washes. Acrylics are very opaque paint. Thinning for light washes will give it some transparency. Real weathering occurs over time in layers. Weathering with paint should be done the same way in very tin layers with extremely thin paint. At least 90% water 10% paint. It can always be made darker by adding more layers. It's harder to make it lighter or more transparent. An easy way to make a flat tire is heating up a piece of flat metal like a knife blade with a lighter or torch and pressing one side of the tire tred against the heated surface. Don't overheat as the tire will melt and smoke into a bubbling mess. To age anything, tone down bright colors, and to blend all the other colors together, apply a black wash of 90% water, 10% black acrylic paint. The black wash my apper to dark when applied but will dry somewhat transparent, leaving darker paint in any depressions or cracks that make it pop. If it isn't dark enough, apply consecutive washes for desired results. This is a good technique to use even on chrome wheels to give realistic detail by muting the chrome where it would otherwise be darker in voids. When weathering a surface to get that water stained affect applying the paint in thin waterdowned pools will achieve this look. The good things about acrylics are that they are non-flammable, non-toxic, dry quickly, easily thinned with water to make stains, clean up easily with water while wet and alcohol after it dried, blends easily. I've used acrylics to paint or stain everything on my layout. Fell free to make adjustments on the paint to water ratio to suit your tastes. My guide is mearly a starting point. My formula to acrylic stain any wood is about a 1/8 cup of water, three drops of burt umber, 2 drops of gray, and 1 drop of black. Be careful with black. A little goes a long way. When applying black washes, it should look somewhat transparent going on. Like muddy diluted water and not soild color black.

That is really cool, I use to do that with my hot wheels and Matchbox cars or whatever I had, when I was younger!!

Thanks! When I was a kid I “weathered” my matchbox by beating them with a hammer, putting them under the leg of my bed and jumping on it, or sticking fire crackers in them!

I have a old matchbox Geep that i repainted and weathered using acrylics and pencil led shaving. My dad is not the biggest fan of weathering on locomotives and such…but he told me that he prefers to see it on model cars and scenery. Excellent work Dave🚂

Vola! Great job, using household commonly available kid's paints, Dave! Looks like my '59 Chevy short bed pickup did-- which was an abandoned farm truck from Sussex, NJ and before I spray painted it in school bus chrome yellow in 2005 that I used as a daily driver until I sold it to a friend in Franklin NJ! 🛻

Great vidio, like how you sanded its paint to fade paint. Keep the 32 scale trucks close to front of layoutand sink it in the sand to keep hight correct. Thanks for the morning coffee...

Dave this might sound like an oxymoron but that's beautiful piece of wreckage!
And you just found out something I learned building model airplanes over 50 years ago, it's a LOT harder to model a wreck than it is something pristine!
    Great job!

great job ! you could try to use stainless steel foil to make a copy of one part of the car that you want to dent. Cut out a small piece of the foil and rub a pencil against it until you get a copy of the surface you want. cut out the plastic part and add the foil copy. make the dents you want and there you go. This looks very convincing when you add new very thin parts. Nice video !

Wait, Stop! You could have 3D printed a truck in any scale. Maybe a wire wheel instead of sandpaper? It does look good when done.

    • @dagryffynhobby

I feel like 3d printing it wouldn’t be worth the time and effort. I could try a wire wheel or other tools, I got a cool scrape effect on another truck I did last night with a small file.
