      There's that, but mostly it's because the vast majority of people who are willing to pay a professional in any trade to do a job would still prefer to pay them rather than do the work themselves, even if they knew they could do it themselves fairly easily.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 6 років тому +40

      They charge so much because that's how much it costs to maintain a business - the wages alone for this job might be $300, but then there's leases, amortisation, insurances, overheads, idle time costs, taxes, management costs, tax management costs, tax management management costs, tax management cost management cost...

    A tip: Cutting/ripping the original fabric off before removing the staples can make removing them a lot easier. When you remove the fabric it will leave its thickness as a gap between the wood and the staples making it easier to insert the tool to remove them.
    I recommend cutting the fabric with a carpet knife exactly where the staples are before ripping it to make sure that no small piece of fabric will be left stuck on them.

    I was an upholsterer and on the whole i think you did okay, nice corners, sometimes you need to pleat them but not here. Also a tip for removing the fabric (or cover) is to get a screwdriver behind the staples and lever upwards pulling on the fabric and the staples at the same time. You then remove the loosened staples with pliers or wire cutters, though there is a knack to using the cutters so as not to cut through the staple, has a sharp tip which is handy for removing any part staple left behind. Though we also used a chisel designed for the job too. Thanks for your videos.

    I think I'm a sucker for fixing and refurbishing videos. I highly enjoyed watching you work and the result turned out really nice. About the crazy glue: if I were you I'd cut the unwinded part and hit it with a little bit of flame from a lighter. That material must be some sort of plastic stuff so it would close and melt a little.

    I once had a $50 office chair break at the metal plate that holds the seat. (Heavy metal plate split in two! Yeah, I know I'm fat, but not THAT fat!) I spent about $600 on welding equipment (Harbor freight flux wire welder), and watched UA-cam videos to learn how to weld and welded the plate back together. Totally worth it! It wasn't the proverbial "stack of dimes" weld, but it was a nice "stack of oddly shaped coins"! And it lasted at least another couple of years.
