great video. been trying to get control over the bass im using in a song im mixing and this fixed the problem. bass isnt all over the place now and taking over the mix. thanks devvon!
As Usual awesome tutorial bro! 👏🏾 I also really love how the studio looks. You did great work on the design. Harmonic Saturation is a great illusion for the ears.
Heard about you through a close friend of mine…have been watching and following along with my mixes (as well as adding my own bells and whistles 😅) and you have helped so much.
Great tips here from Deyvon!! Let me also add that 1. Be careful with the shadow hills because it can get really distorted really fast if you’re not careful so just be aware of that! 2. Rbass algorithm actually includes a resonant high pass filter so instead of putting it on your bass as most do try experimenting with it as a send just like a reverb this gives you more of an additive effect with more control!
@@shaferproducergodSo are you saying he should send less than 100% of the Bass to the Bus he sent it to already? Not being funny. Just trying to learn.
@@coldskoolbeatz No im saying use Rbass like. Reverb and put it on its own seperate bus and blend it in instead of putting it directly on the bass. That makes it additive and not subtractive. Rbass adds a resonant high pass filter so if it’s directly on the channel its doing more than you probably think its doing. Look up videos of Rbass and plugin doctor it will give you a better idea if what it’s actually doing to your sound
I've really just got into it now and i must say i am starting to enjoy the process behind everything i really like how you teach with reasoning and explaining those frequencies a little bit but controlling those harmonics and low end for most my years i had issues controlling my bass frequencies my mixes always sounded muddy and me look like an amatuer in front of my peers
For getting the harmonics out and for nice saturation try adding Unfiltered Audio Dent2 and Elysia Phil's cascade to the chain. You can do a lot of this work with just those two plugins.
@@j.r.a.inthacut8148 Yes me too. I use it all the time. It's very versatile and usefull in many situations.I'm a big fan of Unfiltered Audio. I have a lot of stuff from them. The way you can modulate anything and everything is just crazy usefull.
The sustain on the Shadow Hills is mad solid but that Black Box really made the bassline angry. By the end your ears will almost start to see that brick waveform.
I love what you did here and it's all good. But how all these stuff you did interact with other instruments in the mix. I would have loved to hear these moves while listening to your mix and how it affect it. Thanks
Very interesting my take on this is some plugins are just used to add the character of analog gear while in the box not necessarily just for performance will definitely be adding this trick to my arsenal
Even on phone you could hear the puigchild give the bass some weight and liveliness, when it comes off the bass it sounded flat like no life or character to it.. wonder if this also works for an 808
i juz wanna ask this question i hope you answer this or anyone reading if u can help im juz curious to know if an artist has his own laptop and wants to hear the audio through the speakers by using his own laptop what is the way that he can connect his laptop and use the ssl counsel too cuz I have seen videos where producer will bring their laptop and hook it up with the counsel and literally they can use the whole counsel and even rec to it too....I dont know how they do it there is no video of it too that's y I'm asking you I hope this makes sense now. Please these information would help alot
Nice video..question does apply also for two basses running the same time..this is now for amapiano?e.g the log drum, plus sine bass together in different keys
Great content, as always!!! What are your main studio monitors? (I know its the yamahas and some other speaker that you got next to them) And I'm curious what your recommendation would be for a set of nearfield studio monitors (thinking barefoot footprint 01, KH310, etc) Currently I'm on the Genelec 8040b. Appreciate your time and effort to make these videos, they're extremely helpful. Take care buddy!
I’ve stopped using black box on bass. I don’t like how you lose the sub. Noticed it in your example too. The harmonics can be nice but it always pulls something away that bothers me.
You can try multiband versions of this or sending the signal to a parallel process then filter that down to the bass with a linear phase EQ, then blend it back in.
Compressors have attack and release. The attack is for the transient and the release is for the tail. If that’s not enough, use two or more compressors, just as you would had you run out of bands in an EQ.
Amazing! This is super helpful for me! Out of curiosity, do you still use the 808/Bass Chain you've used from previous videos on top of the 808 Parallel Compression with this 808 Bus as well?
@@HelpMeDevvon Super dope! I've been following your Engineering Channel for the past 2-3 Years and they've helped my mixes TREMENDOUSLY. HMD yo bro, I see you're using JJ technic on ya bus, can you explain that, like when to add them (NLS Buss) Like should we add them before mixing or mix all the bass and drum and then later add?
In case you have several bass tracks. Saves CPU and helps them sound more unified because they interact mutually with the shared nonlinear processors (compression and saturation).
Bro I’ve learned so much from these videos.
It’s crazy, my mixes are now sounding pro level.
Thank you Devvon, you’re the truth!
definitely! thank you Devvon!!
Can't wait for Mix with the Masters with Devvon!
Ahahahah not yet I gotta start mixing for more than just myself and close friends I need to open up the flood gates

your new studio is fire did you find the bad spots yet?
What’s good bro have you ever tried adding Looptrotter SA2Rate at the end of a reverb bus?? 🔥🔥🔥
is the fundamental frequency or note is the key of the song? please enlighten me thank you
that pugichild defaults to adding 0.3dB on the output. that will influence your perception of what its doin!
I still like what it brings. At the end of the day adding .3db along wont give me that color that i want so im not stressed on that small bump

Good video bro.. question… how can we control that bass in a master?
The way you knew I was skipping that part 😂🔥
Nice high top
Try melda eq at the end and your vu won’t vibrate.
I LOVE YOUR CEILING 🤯🔥😂
I’ve stopped using black box on bass. I don’t like how you lose the sub. Noticed it in your example too. The harmonics can be nice but it always pulls something away that bothers me.
I love this
So basically serial saturation, compression, then saturation again?
Wow! Thats a lot of plugins on that song!!
What if I’m working with a 2 track from UA-cam and the bass is just out of control? What would you recommend doing?
Multi band compression would definitely benefit you heavily in that scenario
Coulda swore I was already subscribed 😂 thnx for the reminder
Jaycen Dropped Some Gems There 🤣🤣🔥🔥🔥
Fire Bro 🔥🔥🔥you’re a killer 😉
can i use this process to add girth to anything else?
any advice on how to do this with bass that you don’t have a stem to? such as youtube beats when there’s only a single file
You can try multiband versions of this or sending the signal to a parallel process then filter that down to the bass with a linear phase EQ, then blend it back in.
Can you accomplish this with the waves maxxvolume (upward compression plugin) ?
When you were using the RComp, were you targeting just the peaks with the threshold or were you also trying to target the tail?
Compressors have attack and release. The attack is for the transient and the release is for the tail. If that’s not enough, use two or more compressors, just as you would had you run out of bands in an EQ.
I click just because I wanted to see how you will use Jaycen Joshua's techniques 👀even if I do know you befor him. great content

Love the content! Hand movement when speaking is a little em distracting though.
Oh this approach is jaycen joshua from mix with the masters. Rcomp rbass and shadowhills
Actually that rcomp setting from jaycen joshua works very well. And helps in terms of gain staging, overall mix.
Is it better to use a buss for the bass ? Why not putting the pluggins directly to the bass?
In case you have several bass tracks. Saves CPU and helps them sound more unified because they interact mutually with the shared nonlinear processors (compression and saturation).
do you ever soft clip your bass
Saturation is soft clipping
The only thing missing here is some hard clipping in the end! ❤
It woulda been nice to hear it in context of the total mix.
ur the man
Hallaah 🙌 to your Barbara
😂I use the puigtech eq on my master's to add weight similar to how you used the puig compressor
