    The leaf node is always on the opposite side of the root. Also you can seal the cut areas on the plants that are going to be sold by using beeswax, this prevents rot if you’re propagating in water especially.

    Very well explained and demonstrated. Loving it! Wondering, the air layer cutting which potted into soil with the stem sitting on the soil bed, where’s or which part of it will grow new leaf? Appreciate it so much to enlighten me. Thanks.

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  2 роки тому

      Hi! The new leaf will grow from the leaf node. There is a small bud at every leaf node where the existing leaf meets the stem. If you look close enough at any aroid, you will see a tiny bump there. That’s where a whole new plant will grow! 😊

    Just discovered your channel; wonderful! I purchased an albo cutting and didn’t know to ask what type of a cutting it was. It is a mid cutting that was air layered. What I don’t understand is how a mid cutting ever ends up able to be a vertical plant since it has to be placed sideways. I have Googled and searched UA-cam and Reddit and can’t find an explanation/answer.

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  2 роки тому +1

      Congrats on your albo! If you think about it, almost all albos you see probably came from a cutting. The original node will stay sideways on the soil, while the new growth will be vertical, as long as it is growing up towards the light. Kind of like a vine. Hope that makes sense! ☺️

    • @sterlgirlceline
      @sterlgirlceline 2 роки тому

      @@SuchPlants Thank you! But how will I ever get a fully vertical plant from this and not one that is partially or fully horizontal/sideways? Will I need to chop it to achieve that?
      Right now, it has to be supported to be suspended above the soil which would not be sustainable long term. I want a regular plant that is upright that has downward roots that can be planted directly into the soil and I don’t know how to achieve that.
      I haven’t ever see any plants that are partially sideways and I can’t find a single UA-cam video about this or discussed anywhere else. If you have any resources where I can learn about this I would really appreciate it ⭐️😊

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  2 роки тому +1

      Interesting point! I have a video on my Albo playlist where I combine cuttings to make a bushy pot. Maybe that will give you a better idea on how it’ll look? 🧐 All the cuttings started off as sideways, except one was a top cutting. Alternatively, yes, you would have to take another cutting (preferably top cutting) and train the new roots to grow downward.

      ua-cam.com/play/PLG16f6HVDfeczjBYENOZqiwBOwEuhUnIj.html
      The Syngonium albo is a different species from the monstera albo. In terms of care, the Syngonium is much easier to grow; for me, it propagates and grows much faster than the monstera albo. It’s also cheaper and easier to find than the monstera albo as well. Hope this helps!

    thats a nice sound when it cuts. so sharp! I have an albo in some water now with an airstone under 24/7 light with a commercial COB grow light. $170 cutting with a nice variegation. Already seeing some new roots! One of the sides of the cut started to turn black and spread upwards so I have that area totally out of the water now to stay dry. Has me worried but hoping it doesnt spread more. I think as long as the aerial roots are in water it should continue to root. Have you found that to be true? (vs the whole node in the water)

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  Рік тому +1

      Yes as long as the aerial root is touching water, it will root. If you can keep the rotting node above water while keeping the aerial root under water, you should be good to go!

    • @silenc3x
      @silenc3x Рік тому

      @@SuchPlants Okay awesome. Thank you. I have been keeping the other side of the cutting in the water, but I think to prevent that side from rotting as well I will totally remove it and only have the aerial roots in the water.

    So I want to get a monstera albo and I planned on putting her in water and putting and air stone and a heating mat under. Can I still put the Dr.Q platonic? And do you have to change the water frequently? Also do I put the full node in? Or should I leave out the top part of it to avoid rot? I had a lot of different advice from others and I don’t want to do it wrong in the future.

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  Рік тому

      Yes the plant tonic provides micronutrients that support plant growth. I would change the water once a week. Put enough water to cover aerial roots-you don’t need more than that. It takes about a week to see signs of new root growth, and a few weeks to see a couple inches of new roots! 😊 Don’t be discouraged if you don’t see new growth, sometimes it can take longer.
      Keep a close eye for any signs of rot. If there is rot, remove all rot and you can rinse with a mixture of 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 3 parts water on the affected area.

    • @janetgutierrez2157
      @janetgutierrez2157 Рік тому

      @@SuchPlants do you let it callous once you dip it in Hydrogen Peroxide? I had a past experience where my Albo not having an aerial root grown out or any roots that’s why I asked if I fully submerge it in water.

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  Рік тому

      I usually let it callous for at least 4 hours or overnight. If there is no visible aerial root, it will take longer to root, so its a good idea to let it callous completely and it’s even more important to keep up with water changes.

    • @janetgutierrez2157
      @janetgutierrez2157 Рік тому

      @@SuchPlants sorry I’m asking so many questions I have had a horrible unsuccessful time with the albo. So I’m trying to make sure I don’t ruin her. When doing water changes do you still add Dr.Qs platonic as well once it’s calloused out? Or should I just avoid that and keep it in that HP solution?

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  Рік тому +1

      Haha no problem! Yes I add a couple drops of the plant tonic every water change. You don’t want to let the plant sit and grow in the HP solution, that is just a treatment to kill any remaining rot. As long as you’re providing bright light, good humidity, and changing water frequently, you should be in good shape. Just need to be patient and watch for rot.

    Hey would you recommend terracota pot than plastic pot?

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  3 роки тому

      Yes definitely terracotta pot. It helps to dry out the soil so it doesn’t stay wet too long. Because of this, you will find that the soil dries out MUCH faster, which is great!

    • @marymiller5824
      @marymiller5824 3 роки тому +1

      I just got SO lucky when I spotted amazing variegation in a large Monstera at a local nursery. They were totally oblivious to what was actually in their shop. 35 dollars I paid for a huge monstera with one of the plants being an albo, aurea or whatever! It has amazing yellow in the 4 leaves. I couldn’t find terra cotta cuz I was frantically out shopping for it and I went with a ceramic type that the inside is somewhat rough to the touch. Do you know if this type is not good for the plant? I’d have to repot if you think it wouldn’t be the right fit

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  3 роки тому

      Omg that’s amazing!!! As for the pot, it seems like it’s glazed on the outside, but unglazed on the inside and the bottom. If that’s the case, the moisture will wick away from the bottom where it’s unglazed. Do you find that the soil still dries out after about a week? Terracotta will thoroughly dry out within a week. If it dries after about a week you should be fine. Generally, one week is like the magic number for roots to be happy.

      How long did you keep your air roots wrapped in sphagnum moss, to get secondary roots?
      Do you think it would speed up the growth, of the secondary roots, if you soaked and drained the sphagnum moss in a small amount of superthrive in the water that you soak and squeeze the water from the moss,, then wrapping it in foil?
      I will try a controlled experiment, on two air roots, on my Monstera Deliciosa, one with superthrive in the moss and the other without it.

    Will these cuttings grow new leaves of their own?

    • @SuchPlants
      @SuchPlants  3 роки тому +1

      Hello there! Yes, as long as you cut about an inch above and below where the leaf/petiole meets the stem, you are almost guaranteed to have a leaf node and aerial root, which are essential to a cutting’s success. At 9:55 I briefly talk about the leaf nodes; you will see the leaf nodes on the stem kind of buried under each existing petiole. They appear to be small bumps. Over time, the cutting will push energy to this bump and that is where the new leaf will appear! The same goes for the remainder of the mother plant. In fact, she has already pushed out a new leaf. An update video is planned! Hope this helps! ☺️
