Carbon Cleaning - How To Scrape and Walnut Blast your Intake Valves Audi 3.0T B8 S4/S5, A6-8,Q5,SQ5

- ►One major drawback to all modern-day direct-injected cars is that carbon deposits build up over time and need to be removed at regular intervals. Carbon buildup is due to the fact that fuel is not injected over the intake valves like in a traditional port-injected car, but instead injected directly into the combustion chamber.
In this DIY, Cory Calvin shows us how to clean the intake valves of the detrimental carbon buildup on a 2013 Audi S4 with the 3.0t engine. This DIY is generally the same for other B8 model S4, SQ5, S5, or any Audi with the 3.0t Engine.

video has been posted 3 years ago, but i just want to say thank you for taking the time to post a video like this. You and your channel, along with a few others have saved me thousands and thousands of dollars, enabling myself to DIY. Also, im learning so much and having a blast in the process. Thank you!
Just to let everyone know.
The video on Pcv valve did not tell you to hold the intake flaps slightly open as you install the intakes or the flaps will get stuck closed.
Try to actuate your flaps after the intakes are down on the injectors.
Make sure they move freely.
This is better than watching Netflix
Good time to change out the thermostat, water pump, PCV valve and supercharger oil and get it all done and out of the way since everything is off. Keep them coming FCP!! 👍 great video
We may or may not have a few of those videos coming out within the next week from this job haha
@@fcpeuro yes
@MattCitro That may or may not be coming out next... ^.^
@@fcpeuro PCV replacement next PLEASE! Mine is due and I've been procrastinating and researching how to do it.
And coolant crossover pipe...
If the lifetime guarantee and the fast shipping wasn't enough to keep me as a lifelong customer, these fantastic videos are what absolutely seals the deal.
Every part of the video is such high quality - the camera quality, the editing, the presentation - 5 stars guys, keep it up!
We appreciate that Neil, and are grateful for your support!
So far I'm enjoying these videos. For the b8.5 of course
more to come mastalee!
Awesome video with really detailed instructions. Thanks FCP as always.
You're very welcome, b8Addict! Glad you liked the video!
@@fcpeuro When closing the valves and they are fully shut are you going till you see them shut, or do you go to the very end of that last 10 degrees to where they’re still shut but turning it anymore and they’ll start to open again?
Excellent video! Very informative. Maybe one of the best videos I've seen for this platform!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Appreciated the detailed info captured in this valve cleaning process
I don't see how any shop is going to take the time and do all the actual cleaning steps that this guy does to get the job done right. Repair shops are about production. Great video for a very involved job that shouldn't be needed in the first place if these things were designed correctly. I am close to buying one of these Audis and I am now rethinking it. I love the way these drive but don't know if it is worth it. If anyone knows a shop in SE Michigan that they would trust to do this job right, please let me know.
I loved that job , cant wait till i get to do my timing chain .
Great walkthrough thanks
That Zip tight idea is great!
Comparing this to my first car, the only wires on the engine were: Starter power, ignition, oil pressure sensor. Only hoses were fuel, coolant, crankcase vent. Considerably easier to work on :)
I think OD deserves reward for Designing the engine that needs to be worked on 24 hours and how they allowed the front end to be easily bolted off that's the front clip so you can work on your Audi 24/7 Now That's What I Call real engineering
this vid is encouraging, makes me feel like a shade tree mechanic like myself can handle this on mine
Great video, as always! Any plan on a walnut blast video for the 4.2L V8 FSI?
Wow... Insane job. Congrats 👏
I love the support for this engine, thank you this is spoon feeding at its finest.
Glad you enjoy it!
Great video and solidified my decision that this task is out of my diy skill set and will be making an appointment with a professional!
Agreed. I'd have to buy a ton of speciality tools and items just to be able to tackle this. With so many little things to remove and reinstall and remember this is definitely more suited to a pro and hopefully one who cares like the guys at fcp euro do.
its going to cost around 1000$
😅
@@Taydrum or 40k if you screw it up
It looks like the b9 V6 turbo motor is going to require the motor to be dropped out of the car to clean the carbon off the valves. A reason for me to now look for a b8 that has this job with the motor still in the car lol.
Very good video, many thanks.
Valve plumber - we reach where no one else will! 😂
Good stuff mate!
Great video couldnt have done mine without it
Will you be making this video for the A4? I know it’s basically the same thing but it would be nice to have a walk-through
Thank you for this video.
No problem joe, happy to make it!
These extremely useful videos on this platform is what keeps me a local customer. Now please make a video on PCV replacement so that I can buy more parts! :)
Really happy to hear that, Ajna! We just made a video on the PCV, you can watch here: ua-cam.com/video/xOT5cIt_Btc/v-deo.html
@@fcpeuro Buying parts from FCP Euro right now! I'd also like to buy the aluminum skid plate. Could you tell me if it fits 2014 SQ5?
@@ajnanyc unfortunately according to our fitment guide the Skid Plate does not fit right up to an SQ5.
This looks much easier than the TSI 2.0 on my VW CC. That engine made me never want a German made car again but I'm glad I got my A6.
Thanks, that was good. Can you make a video on cleaning the airflow sensor in Audi A7 3.0 V6 TFSI.
Fantastic video and perfect timing! I plan on doing this in the next month or so.
Thanks, Michael! That's awesome, glad we can be helpful!
Get ready to be cussing and throwing tools. This job is a PITA. Highly advise doing the extra work and putting the front end in the service position. If you have an SUV, you already have the extra room. S4, A6 etc have the front of the engine jammed up against the radiator and you MIGHT be able to get a finger and a half in between it and the engine.
You can put the s4 in service position they recommend it when you go to do pulley changes especially the bottom crank pulley 😅
thanks for the video!
No problem talat shah!
The aluminum I love. You know that protects from snow ❄️🌨️
What was the miles in this amazing machine ?

Love this
excellent video
Glad you liked it!
Thank you!!
No problem tmtoplak222!
Excellent
Good job
Can you do a video of this procedure on a B9 with the 3.0 turbo motor?
Please do a video on walnut blasting for a 2017 VOLVO XC60 T6 with the 2.0 supercharged and turbocharged engine. I’d also like to know how to find and clean the throttle body. Thank you
Great video also how many valves are closed at ones
It is at this point after running the gauntlet of removing the charger, that the PCV valve, thermostat, water pump, and a new set of injectors would be installed.
would of flow tested the injectors whilst the chargers off given the usual VWAG historic tsi/tfsi failures. Good video though with great detail
Do you guys offer this service at your shop? I have a MK5 GTI with 120k miles that am thinking of doing that to. How much would it cost??
Whats the best solvent/chemical to use to clean the carbon buildup manually?
What is the Cost for a complete walnut cleaning. Also how long does it take?
Will you guys have the 2011 audi a6 3.0t OE Intake pipe on your website sometime soon?
What is the part number for the gaskets for the flaps? You didnt list it in the description
Isn’t it usually recommend to replace the fuel lines once removed cause they can leak at the fitting?
will u notice before and after cleaning? does the car runs better?
Thanks your for This Video also I Have same car.
Why do you take off the coolant lines underneath to the heat exchanger?
That Zip tight method will clean perfectly?
I heard I should do an oil change just after blasting, is this true? What is the reason exactly?
I've found reports but no confirmation that the B8.5 CREC engines also have port injection which helps clean the valves, anyone know if this report to be true?
At 15:20 you said we can use that bottle if we don't have access to air or even the walnut blaster right? So can I do this job without actually buying the walnut blaster ?
After rotating and closing the crank, when I'm done, should I rotate it back counterclockwise to reopen them?
How well dose this work wish u would of tan it before the clean
At 17:26 how do you take out the port dividers ? Should I use a pair of pliers ?
Will this fix the P2006 code? Or should I look at replacing the sensor? Vacuum lines? Thanks
@fcpeuro, pls confirm is it a good idea to clean intake valves by spraying throttle cleaner with car at idle start , will it clean valves and throttle, and combust everyrhing from exhaust ?
Why do you take off the lower coolant hoses? Is it necessary??
Can anyone confirm that North America did not get the revised 3.0T engine model CREC? Over here in Europe the 3.0T Supercharged engine was replaced by a new generation engine supercharged engine? One of those revisions being low pressure fuel injectors sat in the inlets in the old school way. This would alleviate this carbon build up on the intake valves!
The later gen CREC engine had 12 injectors! 6 DI high pressure injectors and 6 inlet low pressure injectors. Plus many more upgrades.
Good job Cory!!!
I have an s5 2014 with less than 30.000km Same engine.
How much will cost this in average? And when ?
I have a 2014 S5 as well and had it done at the dealership for about $1400. If you play your cards right with Audi, about 85% was covered under an extended warranty. Done at around 85,000km
@@DaTT78 I could be wrong and correct me if I am but the Audi coverage I think you're referring to is a different carbon cleaning and has to do with the secondary air injection system which does not include the intake valve cleaning. I believe in order for Audi to cover this, you must get a "hard fault" which triggers the check engine light and 2 codes must be present upon diagnosis, this requires bumper to be in service position to get to the two ports...very common issue and coverage I believe is 10 years or 120,000 miles whichever occurs first
Also don't bring to Audi for this unless you have the coverage...$1400 is far too much for a simple walnut blast/chemical cleaning....you should be able to find a good indy shop to do it for about half that and if you're hands on just DIY and save more of your hard earned $$$ 🤙
@@audis5512 Yes, you are correct, it was the secondary air injection system cleaning...I thought it was tied to the same thing. I was throwing only 1 code, but the mechanic made it show both for coverage. Also,, the $1400 is Canadian dollars.
If the intake is a different cleaning, maybe I will look into getting this done as I have 140,000 KM's
@@DaTT78 I thought so, I'm in Canada as well, more specifically Toronto area and all the top Audi indy shops are in the $700 range for the cleaning, some shops use walnut shells and others use chemicals. If you haven't had that one done yet it would probably be worth looking into as a preventive measure! If you're in this area I can give you the name of one
Also worth noting: the cleaning itself should be in the 700 range but keep in mind that the injector seals, upper and lower manifold gaskets, oil change (due to possible contamination) should be done in the process and if you have not yet done thermostat, PCV, water pump, supercharger oil especially at your mileage it really should be done, especially if you are planning to keep the car for awhile!
@@audis5512 I'm in Burlington. If you want, you can drop your email address in my channels discussion box and I can reach out to you for some more info.
Can the GDI spray cleaners be used, or the supercharger will have an effect on using those sprays? If you are supposed to clean the inductions every 20k miles this is a lot of work to do every other year
We suggest doing a service like this really every 60k miles, the only thing that really effects the teflon coating on the supercharger screws is long term meth injection. Those sprays aforementioned would be fine .
Please help with any reccomendations if any, i did this carbon cleaning along with pcv replacement and after am now getting a cylinder 5 misfire. Switched packs and coils to make sure it wasnt a cpincidence and they could of went bad. What do tou think ciuld be going on? Injector issue or evap leak maybe ? Getting codes p0305 cylinder 5 misfire and p0310a cylinder disabling ( injector fixed this issue for anyone else that might have it come up
Can I do this without a special tool for the crank?
would love you to do my car looks like my car would be in good hands
My injectors came out with my intake covers. What the heck did I do wrong. I ended up simply vacuuming around and putting them back. Can anything bad happened because of that?
I miss my hondas. This is.. an insane procedure, even compared to a 100% nut & bolt honda engine remove, rebuild, and reinstall. Is there any fuel cleaner, or aftermarket kit designed to minimize the carbon buildup on this platform? Is there a specific culprit other than just direct injection?
The simple lack of fuel passing thru the valves in all direct injected engines is what causes the buildup of carbon. An oil catch can and slow the process but not prevent it. Methanol injection, however, will help keep the valves clean.
Awesome video! Where is the carbon introduced into the engine? does the supercharger have carbon in it? or is it introduced below that?
Thank your government emissions standards for forcing crankcase ventilation to be routed back into the engine gumming up the valves because direct injection doesn’t clean off the valves with gas like port injection does
@@CrowdHunters right but where in the intake is it introduced? pre or post supercharger?
Do u see power gains after carbon cleaning? Talking about the power that is lost due to dirty ports.
yes, restores lost hp
Is this related to codes P0491 and P0492? Man I’m trying to find the answer to this problem, I have a 2012 s4. It says (air system insufficient flow bank 1 and 2.
@FcpEuro Can you guys please do a front and rear brake DIY For the B8.5 👀👀👀👀👀
We can definitely add that to the list, DeeJay!
@@fcpeuro much appreciated love you guys, Making German cars not a headache in the U.S.
Are those port divider install incorrectly?
Number 1 tip fit a catch can asap I made one up for 30 quid
Yes!
Catch cans are ok but MPI is the real answer for carbon buildup
I have a Audi A7 and it has 104k miles I have CarShield..will this process be done at the dealer🤔
For DSG cars, to turn the crank over to close the valves does the car need to be in neutral or any specific setting? Does anything need to be reset after turning the crank over?
Nope, just make sure you only crank clockwise like your tightening the bolt
I have a 2010 a6 3.0 . Are the steps the same?
Hi, After how many km we have to make this cleaning process? Thanks for the answer
The first time you should do this is at 150,000km. Or 90,000 miles.
@10:01 that vacuum line. That comes from the solenoids under the SC. Where is the connected too where you disconnected it? Please this could save me SUCH a headache
I'm thinking they go to the tumble flaps, in which case could those possibly throw a Secondary Air Injection insufficient flow error code. Specifically bank 1?
at what mileage will these engines need to be walnut blasted?
Does a car need to be in neutral when rotating the crankshaft?
Just a heads up. When tightening the nuts to secure the supercharger down. It’s not 20nm, that’s to much. Ask me how I know 🤦🏼♂️
would a carbon clean fix my P0492 issue ? i just got that code this weekend
This engine is completely different to the v8 4.2 assembly wise.I’ve seen people soaking the ports for 24hours and gives the same results as a walnut blast
At what intervals should one carbon clean? I have a 2015 S4 with 104K miles. Thanks in advance.
Am wondering the same thing! Got a 2013 S4 with 106k km
how many miles was on the s4 you filmed?
How many miles did this 2013 s4 have??
What sort of tool did you use to suck up the liqui moly chemical?
How much would it cost to get this done
Ah yes Audi AG (as well as other DI engine manufacturers). The dealer did my 2.0T A4 valves at 70 KM under warranty. Then did them myself again at 135KM before any codes (Pictures to prove!). Along with the timing chain tensioner, chains, guides, balance shafts, etc as preventative "service". Honestly if you're adverse to high dollar dealer maintenance or if you don't trade your car in every 4 years you might want to avoid these cars. They are definitely not buy and forget. Don't get me wrong I still love my 2012 A4 - 6 speed manual, 220 hp, awd - what's not to like - except for perhaps a little bit less "maintenance". And yes I would probably buy again - If I could get a low mileage manual when I retire. They drive like nothing else. Period.
Not only for Audi. All German cars are prone to be broken down. They need frequent periodic maintenance
Would opening a shop and specializing in audi cars a bad idea?
i hope you can give some advices for the audi s6 v8 twin turbo c7.5 2016
what kind of advice were you looking for?
@@fcpeuro i have the s6 2016 and i would like to have more exaust sound but i dont want to replace the all mufler, what i can delete to have a better v8 sound but not crazy. thanks
Walnut Blast or Dry ice is better ?
I'm in Georgia where are you located I want you to do my carbon cleaning
Just disconnect the battery and you can close and open the doors while working on it am i right?
Should we pull the fuel line fuse in the drivers side fuse box?
It can't hurt!
If changing valve cover gaskets should we use new bolts?
Disconnect the battery please, before disconnecting fuel lines. Then it won't 'squirt all over the place' if someone opens the door. Another options is to remove the fuse to the fuel module or disconnect the fuel pump/sender connection.
What does he mean open up door n prime the fuel injectors??
there is nothing out to avoid this carbon build like using catch can or using better fuel (like bp active technology they offer clean engine like remove carbon build up ) ?
Nothing aside from adding port or methanol injection will completely prevent carbon buildup. A catch can helps delay the buildup but not prevent it completely.
@@fcpeuro does driving style and the kind of journey the car does, like motorway miles vs town driving make a difference to carbon build up ?
That's one of the inherent drawbacks of the gdi engines. The fuel doesn't spray over the intake valves so additives to the fuel do nothing to help.
So can i bring my s5 to you guys? 🤔😵💫
Is that b5 S4 behind him ?
