- The third part of my introduction to Train Simulator 2019 and we're off to Soldier Summit to take the GP9 on a shunting mission. As this one is at low speed there should be no opportunity to foul things up. That is, once I've tackled the track layout.
Train Simulator 2019 was provided to me at no cost by my friends at Dovetail Games.
This video was sponsored by Completely Average Gaming. You can see him in action in Train Simulator here: • Train Simulator 2019! ...

I have seen in a few of your videos that you are not sure which brake controls what on our American locomotives, so I will explain. The automatic brake is the air brake for the entire train, it will still stop a single locomotive but not as fast as the independent. The independent brake is the locomotive brake, to be used when you have no cars, also is always fully applied when the locomotive(s) or train is stopped. The dynamic brake is a type of brake that dissipates the generated electric power as heat in brake grid resistors. Dynamics should in real life always be used to slow down a train a few miles per hour or to maintain the current speed, since it uses heat it reduces wear on the brakes and wheels. Dynamics should not be used to stop without also using the automatic, and unless you have the newer AC traction locomotives the dynamic is pointless below about 20-25 mph. Sorry I wrote so much but it can get confusing, and for the record for everyone out there, I am a licensed locomotive engineer and currently work as a conductor on a class 1 here in the southeast.
And it should be noted that the dynamic brake generally is engaged by putting the throttle in notch 0, engaging the dynamic brake, and then moving the throttle back to the desired notch. This is because it uses the power of the engine to work against the direction of travel. Its like throwing the car into reverse while driving forward, but actually works since there is not a mechanical connection between the diesel engine and the motors on the trucks.
The dynamics are mostly used while descending a hill since you can make smaller reductions than the train brake when the hill isnt as steep
I have a question, every time I go out with the locomotive I have to use sand on the rails or not necessarily?
Stuart Harrod a lot like an engine/exhaust break on a truck right
+viniaugusto13 Sand is used to prevent wheelslip -- so you should use it if you're pulling a heavy load and/or if the rails are slippery, but not if you have a light load on a dry track!
Basically Zac is correct about the Dynamic brakes, except that they use the motor windings to control train speed by changing the polarity of the motor. For them to work you need both the dynamic brake handle and the throttle on at the same time to induce a magnetic field into the motors which slows the train.
just ordered my 1st TS 2019 simulator game as we are on lockdown & watching your video was very interesting & fun.. i think i will learn a lot from this & will look out for more video's.. keep on rolling..
I'm quite familiar with this particular switching yard, as I used to live in Provo! In fact, I used to walk around the yard and among the various things I used to do was to drive the train crews to the trains in this yard (as a taxi driver... sort of weird at the time). Geez this brought back a bunch of fun memories for me!
Honestly, what you showed from the video in the game is mostly accurate to how it really looks in Provo, minus some obvious short fall since it is just a game and not 100% matching reality. The businesses you dropped cargo off at even exist too.
You definitely live up to your name in terms of knowing what you’re doing! But I mean that in the best way possible, hilarious commentary all the way thru! I loved watching this!
Thanks George :)
Nice! I like shunting-then-delivering scenarios like this! It really shows what makes a railroad! You also didn't use your horn as much as you should. You should sound it when you're changing direction, passing a sign with a large W on it, and at most railroad crossings!
And you should also set the handbrakes on freight cars before unhooking them! (Lac-Megantic, anyone?)
I enjoy your wrong optimism lol but you have a great energy behind you I absolutely love it.
BTW: the little “W” sign indicates you should blow the whistle (or horn) for a grade crossing; in the U.S., it’s long-long-short-long and hold until the first car/engine passes the grade crossing. A little more authenticity won’t hurt. 🤠
The problem with simulation is afterwards i want my paycheck:)
I've literally been in American Trucking Driving Simulator A LOT recently. I'm for real about to go get my CDLs now and do it as a job... I can't get into this game, I can't get into this game...
I would be happy to see you drive any old thing Colonel!
GP9 cab is very Spartan. Colonel, you are the goods maiestro!
The dynamic brake is only useful at speed (i.e. it can't bring you to a full stop). Applying the dynamic brake turns the electric motors into electric generators (converting dynamic energy - the trains motion - into electric energy). Since it removes dynamic energy, you will slow down. This is more effective at higher rotation speed, as you can imagine. If you apply throttle with the dynamic brake on, the dynamic brake is ignored (in TS at least, not sure about real life).
Purpose:
On electric trains, the dynamic brake can reduce energy consumption by converting the train's motion into electricity again, basically returning some energy into the grid, instead of dissipating it as heat. On a diesel-electric train, the electricity is still dissipated as heat through some elements that can be heated up by passing electricity through them. This is still better than using the normal friction brakes, since dynamic braking doesn't heat up the friction brakes (reducing their effectiveness) and doesn't wear the friction brakes, saving on maintenance.
How about on a steam train? J/k!
It has to be either the full Soldier Summit run up through those horseshoe bends in charge of 3 or 4 huge American diesels, with mile after mile of breathtaking, wild, untamed scenery and curvy views of a massively wonderful freight consist Or you could just shove that knackered old waddler down to Portsmouth with 5 folk on board.
I second a good run from Provo to Helper via Spanish Fork Canyon and Soldier Summit. I live in SpringVILLE (you kept saying SpringFIELD in the video) and watch Union Pacific trains run these tracks daily. They are very busy tracks in real life.
I enjoyed that one mate :) just the right length I think, I do find some of the train sim vids too long. Just a constructive comment, I really don't want you to change anything! The end of video face sign offs are a very welcome addition :)
'I am only a casual enthusiast' - I like that. I would like to see you try steam :-D
As for what to drive badly next, it's all good to me - TS19, TSW or even the new Trainz 19...
Yep... I like trains and I like watching you trying to drive them [correctly] but I don't have a clue what the various engines are or where they drive. In real life I live on the Prairies in Canada and I've seen some really big trains and I've driven many times through the Rockies and seen some pretty big trains and I've lived in Northern Ontario and seen some big trains. So you just take your pick (well, don't actually take along a pick because that wouldn't do you any good really, at least not for the driving of a train) and drive and I'll watch and that way we're both doing our jobs [correctly]. :)
I would recommend driving the Gas Turbine over Sherman Hill, or WP in the Feather River Canyon as future driving adventures.
GP40 somewhere in the Rockies of Canada. Great job today Colonel. 8.9/10
they never recreated the gp40 soo better luck next time pal
Oh yes, if the big boy is available please drive it!
OH MY GOODNESS. the railroad I help model and switching with my favorite diesel locomotive. This makes me happy. To bad it couldn’t be a little to the east and be in Colorado
TBH I think we have loco 5903 on the layout. Might be wrong also might not be
That was great. Thank you.
Colonel, I would like to see you try another Steam Train.
Something like the Castle Class on the Riviera Line in the 50s (I like that line, I used to go on holiday across the river from a stretch of it, although not in the 50s).
I know steam trains are complicated, and your last attempt at one didn't end well, but I'd like to see you succeed at a route with one (although it might require some practice and research). I believe in you.
Also, if you get more in to using keyboard controls (or, I guess, splashing out on one of those fancy train controllers), then a headtracking solution like TrackIR or the much more affordable EDtracker make games like Train Simulator more immersive to look around the train's -bridge- -helm- -captain's chair- cab freely.
he needed to use the horn.
Anything freight in the Americas would be fine by me, it's a nice change from the European passenger routes.
California Zephyr through the Feather River Canyon! :)
Drive any old thing, I'll be happy.
I hope they will add huge trains like they have in Australia or Dubai where you drive hours trough the wilderness.
Is Halsmere to Portsmouth available?
How about the West Highland line out to Mallaig.
Colonel can you see if there are any maps in train sim that are in Colorado, especially west Colorado, especially grand junction
My little son and me, from janis trainwolrd, are huge fans of your awesome train videos. Fantastic shooting angles and super cut of the video material. We are always happy about a new series of you. Please continue with the great work. You have a subscription from us for sure.
Your followers of janis trainworld.
J&S
im not sure whats in the game, but a norwegian BM73 from Oslo to the airport would be fun, or somet french TGV stuff? Or something along the dutch lines. Amsterdam to Rotterdam or somethign :D
Can you try a bullet train route, preferably the Hayabusa Shinkansen route from Tokyo to Hokkaido
Can somebody please help me. I just downloaded TS2019 and it wont launch :-( Neither 32 bit or 64 bit will start :-(
Cant wait
This is why I wish I had more money: I have sweet bugger-all when it comes to Train Sim content, but I can’t afford any more.
Where do you get the extra content. Im looking for 60's grey and maroon CPR
Quick question: Is the Ductile Iron Pipe Factory a factory producing ductile iron pipes, a pipe factory producing ductile irons or an iron pipe factory producing ductiles? Okay, it wasn't such a quick question...
I live near the real factory. They make sewer/under street pipes made of ductile iron. There was an episode of Top Gear filmed in their storage yard a while back of cars racing around the stacks of pipes. P.S. The "Frozen Food Factory" at the end of this video is a Nestle plant that makes Stouffer's frozen meals in real life.
North East Corridor USA. Nothing beats the NEC for passenger service in the US.
Colonel Failure, you might want to try the FEF-3 by smokebox or even more of a challenge, the 4-4-0 or 4-6-0 by smokebox.
so basically you want him to light his computer on fire...
Also something for in the near future. A couple of guys are working on the first New Zealand route for TS2019/2020. It's looking really good so far. They haven't got too much more to do I think. Check it out here:- m.facebook.com/NZTSWorkshops/?ref=page_internal&mt_nav=0
Can you say from where you got this dlc
Sure, Steam.
What screen recording software did you use?
hay great video im going get this game for christmas is this route in the game??
It is indeed.
@@colonelfailure awesome and you did good job
As somebody said in another episode, how about the Doncaster Works route. Plenty of places for you to get lost. store.steampowered.com/app/24095/Train_Simulator_Doncaster_Works_Route_AddOn/
Or maybe the West Highland Line Extension with a Black 5. It's got plenty of hills to climb up and down and the scenery is great 👍 store.steampowered.com/app/277748/Train_Simulator_West_Highland_Line_Extension_Route_AddOn/
There are some good scenario's on the workshop using the Black 5 from that Western Lines of Scotland route you already have.
guy runs like 3 or 4 switches on the lead lol
At about 19:25 you didn’t blow your horn for the crossing! In North America the sequence you should blow the horn when approaching a grade crossing is 2 longs, then a short, then a long, and you should finish that last long blast right when you roll over the crossing. This video will tell you more info about horn use on North American railroads/railways:
ua-cam.com/video/eI6xSjkcXTY/v-deo.html
Do a steam loco. Nobody does it quite like you.
Hey Colonel do the Norwich Wherry rout
Hey uh... colonel... um just by the way... is Steggy dead?
Sir what are your pc specs
Herambh Runthla lol his graphics are so bad
Please give us compressed file of this game sir.
what? lol
Entertaining video, simply smashing...but I got a headache screaming at the screen. Learn to blow your horn at road crossings Mr. Failure or Colonel if you prefer...the cartoon people you could have killed in the last 40 minutes is astronomical. 2 long blasts then a short blast then another long blast of the horn as you cross the roadway.
I employ the element of surprise.
In the US it's called switching not shunting
u reckon? thats a American Southern word :3
not really lol
train sim world 2018 is far more better in graphics
First like and comment
2nd - and first like on your comment 😎
This is the acknowledgement comment and like. Move along.
I didn’t expect the first two comments not to be hate comments
Welcome to the channel :)
What is it with American train speed limits being so incredibly low? American routes have never appealed to me due to this, they're so incredibly boring. You've got miles and miles to go, and can only go at a snails pace, even though most of the track is straight as can be.
Safe Working in industrial yards is rather different from main line runs...
Jeez, you don't say.. It seems like US yards extend over pretty much everything then, especially freight-wise.
Speeds are low on US routes because of 1) the terrain, quite a bit of the US is hills or mountains, if you are driving across the plains, you can go like 60-70 mph. 2) Track condition, most of the track in the US was laid more than 50 years ago, and does not allow for high speeds such as in Europe. 3) Prioritys and Tonnage, Although passenger service is prioritized over freight, the quantity of freight being transported by train is much greater in the US than in Europe, and bigger trains usually mean slower trains.
He never actually got on the main line in this episode. the main line was right next to him, and has a higher speed limit. In real life I see trains going at least 50 mph down it, and the limit may be even higher.
