- Fans of the 1980s will recall absolutely everything in this Northern Trans-Pennine run from Stalybridge to Manchester in a class 101. Train Sim World delivers the haircuts, the fashion, the dubious strangers waiting in the subway and, of course, the trains. Colonel Failure delivers inappropriate cultural flare. Perfect matchup.
The key for this game was provided to me by Dovetail Games, and I know a lot of the people who work there pretty well. Some of them very well. If that weren't bad enough I'm currently being paid by Dovetail to do some work for them - this video is not part of that work, but even if it were it'd probably be exactly the same because I play it as I find it.
Needless to say, this means that this video is devoid of any critical commentary and you are welcome to interpret that as suits you best.

It was obvious from the start that you were going to fail, that wasn't your train, it said Private on the drivers door not Colonel.
Something from the 80's you forgot: Consumer goods all being marketed with the word TURBO (capital letters essential) on them. Everything from Porches to fountain pens had that word, whether they were TURBO or not.

Brilliant intro, excellent middle and I am looking forward to the end! A little bit of technical info for you to ignore reference your fight with the brakes: If you move the valve above LAP to a percentage then the brakes get applied, the more percents the faster they get applied. so if you set the valve to 10% the brakes will slowly get applied harder and harder until you have full brakery. If you set the valve to 80% you will get full brakery very quickly. Setting the valve to LAP just keeps the pressure constant at whatever it is at, less than LAP, as in RELEASE, lets the air (or vacuum) out of the system and reduces or fully releases the brakes. It's exactly like a bath, but different: open a tap (turn valve above LAP) and the bath fills (brakes get brakier), close the tap (set to LAP) the bath stops filling and stays at a certain level, remove the plug (valve at release) and the level of water (or brake) drops (or reduces). If you look at the brake gauges, the left hand one shows how much brakery you have set, with not brakes at the top and very brakes at the bottom. This has been a public service announcement from Cappen Boidseye.

One of your very best vids Colonel. Loved the intro, and a quick tip, for the real BR DMU experience, as soon as a punter sits in one of the front seats so they can see into the cab you should slam the blinds closed in their faces in an as abrupt and rude manner possible.

Just stumbled on this and that 101 looks ace. I used to work with them back in the day, and rode in those cabs tons of times (never the driver unfortunately). Takes me back a while man.
Is this why there hasn't been many videos lately (ignoring the fact it was new years day) because of all of the editing needed for this masterpiece.!😍😍
What happened at the 39 minute mark:
You never cleared the block that the opposing train required to enter the station (due to not going into the station far enough), so it's stuck at that signal, making it impossible for you to get back out of the station.
To avoid redoing everything: cross a red signal or derail, so you can restart from the last checkpoint. Stopping the scenario manually will require you to redo it completely. The last checkpoint in this case would've been stopping at Manchester, so it would've been a quick fix.

One reason why I subscribed to your channel sir it's good to see I'm not the only one that has calamities on train Sim world..
The platform you came into in Manchester Victoria is now the metrolink tram platforms, if I remember rightly these platforms was also electrified by third rail
Those brakes don't work like a car's, The amount of braking is dictated by the brake pipe pressure. "Lap" means that the pressure is maintained, 'off' reduces the braking effect and 'on' increases it. If you watched a driver working onw of these then you see him jigging the handle as you came into a station --apply a bit, lap, apply a bit more, lap .... and so on. I was surprised that at Ashton you didn't have the passengers piled up against the partition but I suppose the brakes aren't that good.
The weather's a nice touch. Quite authentic.
signals green means go yellow means next signal is red and red means stop
Traffic lights green means go yellow means red is coming and red means stop
Conclusion signals=traffic lights

If you're leaving or entering a depot, you need to set points yourself. On the journey, they're done for you. That confused the hell out of me the first time I played.

Colonel Failure
The red semaphore signals are known as home signals. If raised/lowered, they can be passed, if not, then you must stop before them.
The yellow semaphore signals are known as distant signals. If it's raised/lowered, then it is indicating that the next signal is also clear. If it is down, then it is indicating that the next signal is at Red and you should be getting ready to stop at the next signal.
Where there are both signals on one post sometimes referred to as intermediary signals, the red home signal is the one that immediately protects the block section past the signal whilst the yellow distant signal is effectively the warning for the next section. If the red semaphore is raised/lowered but the yellow semaphore isn't, it means you can proceed but get ready to stop at the next signal. If both arms are raised then the next two sections are clear.
With colour light signals, it's basically traffic lights.
Green - All dandy, next section (or two) are clear
Double Yellow - Only on four aspect signals, means the next signal is on a single yellow so you should start slowing down
Single Yellow (Caution) - Get ready to stop as the next signal is a Red
Red (Danger) - Stop as the next block section is occupied or the signaller hasn't set up your route yet
In some place where signals are hard to sight for example on curves, a banner repeater is provided which is a bit like the old distant signals in that it can be passed anyway but gives advanced warning of the signal ahead. It looks like a black and white no entry sign or old fashioned shunt signal which is raised so it sits like a normal signal and that has the following aspects.
Not raised - Get ready to stop at the next signal which is at Red (Danger)
White disc raised to 45 degrees - Next signal is displaying a proceed aspect, this could be a Yellow, Double Yellow or a Green
Green Disc raised to 45 degrees - This is a new variant, means that the next signal is displaying a Green aspect

Fair point. I'm catering to an international audience however, so am providing National Geographic-style reportage.
Lovely video :) when you have a control you have to drag in TSW, like the handbrake or the brake lever, the line with the dot on it that pops up when you mouse over the control shows you the direction you have to drag. I don't think many people have spotted that yet :)

Red = stop
Single yellow=next signal is red or double yellow
Double yellow = next signal could be single yellow or green
Green = go or next signal is double yellow
Could just be me but use of the word "or" in your descriptions may form part of the problem.

All the percentage does is how fast it can pressure the brake cylinders lap just maintain the pressure and something with release

Honestly? I don't have one. The least interesting are those where there's nothing much to do. I like a goodly amount of faffing around.

The other train had stopped as there was the wrong type of leaves on the track! because us Brits love the wrong trees being right next to railroads!

This is far easier to do on PS4 I should know I got this on the PS4 version. As I can't use the PC version as my works but, I don't use it EVER!!! I got my reasons as to why I don't use it. DON'T ASK!!!!
