    All those people commenting with an uptalk intonation are equally annoying.

    Naomi Wolf doesn't get it. These young women copy the speech patterns of dumb celebs like the Kardashians who use vocal fry in everyday speech. Then other girls copy those girls and now all of a sudden you have an epidemic of vocal fry across the entire country.

      Nail on the head! Like tattoos. EVERYBODY's got one now or you're not part of 'that' crowd. All because of a TV show that got wings.

    Maybe this speech affectation (especially, it seems, among younger women) is a way to be a part of the crowd--as (not "like") in high school years. Once outside of those years, this way of speaking becomes such a habit that even into their 20s and 30s, it remain a part of these peoples' speech patterns. Speech inflection is contagious: think of someone who is an American who moves to Australia or Brazil; after about 2 to 5 years of being around different speech inflection, this person takes on certain speech attributes particular to the region in which they live. I think this is what happens with the generation whose school years practiced a certain speech pattern that denoted acceptance by the crowd, being cool, and speaking like peers so as not to be apart from anyone. Unfortunately for those of us who hear them on-air in the media, they are so habituated in that pattern that the listener is just expected to accept it. This way of speaking has also become popular as media personalities draw from a younger demographic. To me this pattern sounds amateurish, self-centered and tiresome.

    It is a bizarre and highly annoying affectation that some (mostly younger) women have taken to these days. Not sure what that has to do with “feminism” though, unless it means that being an insufferably shallow twat with a grating manner of speech which veritably broadcasts one’s blithering idiocy can be detrimental to being taken seriously.

      Linguists have a technical term for this hideous personality defect: "creak." As in a creaky door. But the creak is in the ear of the beholder. Creakers themselves are unaware of their gutteral deficiencies. Personally, I always have the mute button handy whenever there's the possibility of a chance encounter with a creaker.

      The superfluous vocabulary you use in your comment to sound intellectually superior is not only ironic, but unbearably smug and pompous to a point that I would prefer a valley girl accent and vocal fry in all woman rather than see another one of your comments .

    It’s bad in the business world because it nauseating to listen too and is distracting... Men do it but not as much, the deeper voice lessen the noticeability of the fry.

    How come Naomi Wolf uses vocal fry twice in that short speech of 5sec????

    • @kahlesjf
      @kahlesjf 2 роки тому +1

      That is nonsense. Vocal fry is naturally occurring for most people at certain times and for some people as their natural speech. Naomi Wolf sounded completely natural. And you are equating her voice with the examples at the beginning of the video?

    Guaranteed, no woman is going to allow another woman with overt vocal fry advancement. She had to give up certain casual affections to get ahead and she’ll be damned if she lets another get away with it. Stop labelling this as male oppression.

    All it tells me - and I fully understand this may be an odd, unpopular _opinion_ - is that the speaker either has not yet learned to control their voice (doesn't know how to speak), does not appreciate clarity (doesn't care) or is trying to appear as something they're not for all the wrong reasons.

  • @kahlesjf
    @kahlesjf 2 роки тому +5

    Yes, men do it too and that is even more cringe inducing. And many women also cringe when they hear it in other women. Consider if men across the country started speaking like Jeff Spicoli, and then complained they were not being taken seriously and wondered why they couldn't get a date with women who wear suits to work. Even if vocal fry was not an exaggerated affectation as a result of watching too much reality TV, the cringe it evokes is naturally occurring also. And it is not like there hasn't been time to get used to it. It is difficult to focus on the content of what someone is saying, man or woman, if you are cringing every other word. Imagine trying to focus on content as the speaker is chewing and popping bubble gum throughout their presentation or lecture. Falling back on the feminist refrain of "male dominated societal persecution" is lazy and lacks insight.

    The vitriol is strong in this thread. *insert the word feminism* and guys start hammering at their keyboard as if it is an attack on them.
    Calm down, just a video and a point of view that suggests perhaps *how* a person talks does not exactly measure their intelligence.

    Vocal fry is EQUALLY IRRITATING whether it's done by a man or a woman!
    I don't get the pushback offered by a speaker or 2 here. They seem to classify the problem as one where the criticism of vocal fry is only made against women; i.e. as for example the nonsense pushed by the women seen here speaking on Skype.
    The current worst case example of what I cannot stand in the way of vocal fry comes from a man who is repeatedly a guest on MSNBC and especially on the Deadline: White House Show with Nicolle Wallace. That master practitioner of vocal fry is Andrew Weissman! His fry is so bad that I often find his points lost as he speaks and fries away!
    Please drop the 'fry' whether you are a man or a woman!
