1965 COMET BUILD, PART 1: TEARDOWN
Вставка
- Опубліковано 13 жов 2024
- We tear into the 1965 Comet Caliente engine bay and begin prepping for head gaskets and water pump repairs. However, after seeing the state the engine is in, we begin to second guess if all the work needed is really worth it in the end...

The Coming Storm
Looks like the previous owner thought they said to change the oil every 30,000 miles instead of 3000.
Lol looks more like 300,000! 😆 lol
Was thinking the same thing
Looks like Quaker state oil from back in the day I have seen alot of those old ford engines look like that
@@RayBenson45 I remember avoiding using Quaker State oil back in the 80s for that reason.
@@RayBenson45 I think you mean Pennzoil, my uncle raced local nascar and nobody used Pennzoil some used Quaker state,
289 all the way! It is such a classic engine, it needs to be saved. Just disassemble and clean it. reassemble and enjoy.
Another tally for 289!
@@Theoldcarchannel. I owned a 65 Comet Caliente (with factory drag bars?) during my junior high school year(1979). Having a true frame instead the usual pasted together unibody, it was a bit heavy given its size, but its 4bbl 289/4 speed transmission it would routinely smack down the smogged-up auto transmision 350 Cameros of that time from street light to street light.
@@lostcat9lives322 those little 289s sure could scoot pretty good! I've never heard of 65 Comets with factory drag bars, maybe an over ride Trac bar like the Shelby's had? The 65 comets were also unibody cars. Sure your car wasn't a galaxie?
@@Theoldcarchannel. I stand corrected. Yes it had unibody construction. It all happened some time ago.
Love the little 289, you tore it down pretty far might as well do the timing chain while you are at it
May as well pull the engine and do it all the way.
5.0 up grade. You will thank God for doing that.
Yeah your favorite 289
Hey bro. 289 is a keeper. Wow, worst mess under the valve covers and intake I’ve ever seen. She deserves to stay, she ran like that, she’s a survivor. She wants to run. Great video. Big Al from Connecticut. Be well.
Mine was red, 65 comet caliente, 289 auto well appointed, nice and loud!!!
Numbers Matching keep it that way
Many thanks to our Northern brothers for keeping our old classics going. The more we can save, the better the world will be. Looks like they used the old Quaker State oil.
I grew up riding in a 64 comet my dad had. It was blue with a 289 and had air shocks in the back. I loved that car cruising listening to ccr and black sabbath 😆
Those sure were the good ol days!
Those heads looked so much better after cleaning!
Many years ago I helped my friend work on his chebby safari van wit a v6, in the lifter valley was over 2 ice cream pails of carbon chunks the size of charcoal briquettes! It had over 600,000 kms on it and never been opened, it used 2 litres of oil daily before we rebuilt the poor thing. Lol. I know how you feel when you see that mess!
BRUTAL!!!! THAT'S CRAZY!
I like the old school 289
If the block and crank in the 289 are sound a total rebuild is what I'd like to see. I know, that's not on the table. But I understand the old 289 had far superior metallurgy than the 5 litres. More nickle content for better strength. I love the old 289. (I'm 72 years old) I has a '68 with the 289 and a mild cam, headers, Offy intake and off the shelf 4 barrel. It ran like a raped ape and was stone cold reliable. Stock pistons and heads just cleaned up and valves ground. The old 289 loved to rev. (for the era) But the oil and filter were kept clean with regular changes, and it never overheated. That made a world of difference regardless the name on the icon. One eye on the tach and NEVER over rev it. Solid old iron. Good stuff. If ya don't rebuild it go with the 5 litre. Half way isn't the way to go.
You should post the pics of the lifter valley EVERYWHERE, can you imagine what the oil pan looks like, DANG, people, change your oil!!!
I have a 65 Comet 45 Years got it when I was 19 Still running it 289
Pull it out and do it right. You'll be better off with the peace of mind. Just imagine what sludge must be in the pan clogging the oil pickup plus that's a good time to thoroughly clean the engine bay. (keep the 289) that's a cool car!
"Oh Boy" pretty much says it all, maybe add a "Wow"
I'm all for saving the original stuff as much as possible. I did swap the single brake master for a dual on my '65 Falcon. An on my '52 Customline. Safety first!
Love the 70s hole in the side of the air cleaner trying to get more air into the motor to get better fuel mileage
People in Phoenix are complaining about 55* F and sunshine
Ran small block Frods since the 70s and have never snapped a water pump bolt
Last year I did much the same to the 352 in my truck- tore it down to short block and spent 3 days cleaning- it was a good runner but it leaks lots of oil out of intake- put it back together and it still runs good without the leaks- throw it back together-
302 all the way roller the way too go!!!!!
Absolutely loved the new video. Keep the 289 would be my vote. It would be easy enough to change out in the future. I say that because it's not me doing the work. Lol. Any choice you make I believe will be a good one. Cheers.
My first car in 1986 was a mint 1965 comet cyclone. Black on black. I would do anything to have it now. After I had it for 5 years, my uncle and I put a 300hp 289 in it and a borg Warner T10 in it. It was a very fun car and fast by the standards of the mid 80’s. I really miss that car.
That's a killer car! Black on black too! Dream ride/colour combo right there! And 4 spd! I'd miss it too!
Dude which ever direction you go ya can’t go wrong !!!! But cheap is cheap n 5 speed roller 302 is a sweet option !!! Maybe dress it up as a 289 n ya got beat of both worlds !!! Love that comet
The Drill Bit is used for removing the voices from your head that keep telling you to keep the engine. Growing up we had a 65 Comet until the floor boards evaporated in the late 70’s . Good channel, you got to love those southern cars. Spent several years up your way near Winnipeg
Thank you for the support! Haha no kidding, can't believe the amount of 289 votes after showing how bad it is!check out the latest video, I think you'll be happy with the choice!
Awesome, unfortunately these cars didn't stand a chance one they met winter/salt.
302 for sure. Love the 289 but 302 rollers give me the warm and fuzzies inside.
One thing I love about old cars is how simple they are to take apart. Looks like the owners ran a paraffin based oil which leaves the chunks of stuff behind. time to scrape and dig it out and vacuum it out. remove the valve train and vat it all to clean up things. Then run lots of Sea-foam in the engine and lots of short oil changes to clean it up. Have faith it will clean up. If it ran good just do what I advise than do a 5.0 swap. Even rebuilding the 289 would keep me watching more... Its nice to keep old cars original or close.
Good luck on this project.
It does look bad, but you’re nearly there with the clean up. Spend one more da on cleaning and run the old motor. From a viewer point of view would be interesting to see how well you can get the old junk to run without a rebuild. Love the channel
5.0 is the way to go!!
These 5.0L tallies are starting to add up!
@@Theoldcarchannel. I’ve had both. 65 mustang with 289 and a 88 convertible with a 5.0 and I would rather run the 5.0.
I'd like to see you just clean the 289 up. Maybe hot tank it? It seems like it could use a hot tanking.. Clear out the water jackets/passages and get that BAKED oi off!! LOL.
Great video!! Peace my friends in the North!!!
I look forward to theese videos alot
Thank you for the support!👍
I love the 289 and would love to see it kept. Maybe drop the pan and see what the bottom end looks like before making a final choice.
Put the 5 liter in but keep the 289 if it’s numbers matching. Nice cleanup keep up the good work.😎👍
I had one of these years ago. I wished I never got rid of it.
If you use the 289, with the lack of oil changes, you will need a timing chain too, so a 5 liter might be the way to go. You can check the timing chain by reinstalling the distributor then turning the engine to line up the timing marks, then turn the engine the opposite way until the rotor starts to move.... Ford's spec. is 3º max.
I love the old 289’s
Slap her back together ! Perfect year for a classic
It’s almost like someone ran it off of wood!!!! All that tar built up.....wow! And hey.... you did find a chunk of wood! Lol
Pretty car
we always watch your videos there interesting educational and very entertaining glad your back it's been a long time
Thanks for the support John, glad you are enjoying the content. Lots more to come!
5.0 all the bud. Cheers from Ontario.
You'll have to stay tuned to future episodes to see which route we take. Cheers from ontario as well!
Ehh cant wait to see more videos of this from Ontario as well
In Kitchener. Love this show.
@@josephhead8345 I am in kitchener too man 😂👋
Watching too!.... from kanata (ottawa, ontario)
Love your builds I'm also in Canada in British Columbia i have two stangs a 1966 coupe and a 1968 fastback both have very similar storylines like your cars like the 68 fastback sat for 40 years and i got it ready three days before my wedding which i used it in and my 66 i got from the original owner in a way keep up the good work
289! 💪😎
17/32 drill bit is for upper control arm relocation aka 1" shelby drop. I would keep 289 in if it was hi performance 289. I would put in a ford create engine that is a boss 351 bored out 427 ci. When putting 5 speed in a falcon or comet you will have to use a tail shaft housing off of a chevy S10 because it moves shifter further back to stock location if the car came from the factory with a floor shifter.
Keep the 289. Make sure the oil pan and pickup is clean and slap it back together as originally planned.
Can't deny it. This is a good looking car. I really like the way the grill and headlights look. I think this car has good lines. 👍
Ford's version of the '65 G.T.O.
Which do you like better.???
@@joebozzelli969 I like the GTO but I think the front of this one looks better. But that's just my opinion.
@@icerazar713 I agree.
cool project! the drill bit is probably needed for the shelby drop. I'd vote stick with the 289 but you really need to pull the oil pan to clean out the sludge and debris and also get those heads in a parts cleaner and wire brush to clean them better.
Man that looks like a Pennzoil motor. I say rebuild it and throw it back in. It should be a nice little cruiser motor.
Awesome!
Definitely the original 289 in the fastback, with the 5 speed. Go old school with the comet
Oh boy. Great Project. More coffee for me.
Hey Robert, thanks for watching! Pour me a cup aswell, I'm gonna need it with all the work that needs to be done
Always good to see another video Mike. I vote for the 5 Liter change
Junkyard Digs was working on a early Bronco from Arizona, and I believe he ran across the same issue with the water passages in the 302
65 Comet was my first car. I had big plans for it even though it had giant rust holes behind the front seats. Straight six with a 3 on the tree. I loved that car dearly but was talked into selling it after the fourth time it tried to murder me.
Go for the 302👍
I'd be interested to see you take the engine apart and clean it up and get it running again, keep it to the original engine.
MOPAR linkage, and electronic ignition near the radiator. a few steps in the right direction.
Love this Comet!! This will be a great series, because it's different from a Mustang (not that there is anything wrong with a Mustang, but you see a lot of them) but still uses a lot of available Mustang goodies & parts. Did you have a video on getting this car? Didn't remember one, and looked back at all your videos and didn't see one right off.
Thank you, yes the Comet I'd definitely more unusual/not as well known as compared to the mustang. Hopefully people enjoy the series. I did not make a video in regards to us getting the car, we bought it in 2016 (well before my UA-cam/video days, so really only have photos of the trip).
Old School is the way to go if its a numbers matching engine to the Comet. Swap in a 5.0 Temporarily and slowly build that sweet 289.
Sick video Mike!!!
Thank you😎🤘 she'll be at some shows this year
Keep that 289 but give it a quick refresh. Cyl hone, valve lap, rings, bearings, etc.
They're only numbers matching once.
This seems strangely familiar.....I needed an engine fast for my Studebaker, bought a 71 350 off of Kijiji...and it was just as caked up with sludge. I tore the intake, heads and pan off, yanked the cam and cleaned as much of the crap out. Threw a used cam in it and a clean set of smog heads (Still terrible heads). Did 3 oil changes and the oil is staying clean now, runs fine but smokes a little bit. Worked to get me going for summer 2020!
Man those heads looked a lot better after you cleaned them. Those things were bad!
Still weren't perfect, but yeah WAY BETTER than before. Oil will actually be able to flow now 😅🤣
Pull the pan and clean it and the oil sump.
That will be shown in a future episode👍
take it apart, clean it, once the pan is off ball hone if necessary and carry on with the aforementioned Plan.
never saw a sbf water pump like the new one you have, odd. 64-65 comets are probably one of the best looking 60's cars ever made
That's a good candidate for putting the top end outside in the snow, throwing gasoline on top, and setting them on fire for till they possibly clean up a bit. Good luck!
🤣🤣 that would been good
Yea.... someone didn't change their oil very often.... sad.
My grandfather worked for ford from 55 to 67 and my father worked for ford from 77 to 92 so long line of ford family I helped them both as a kid working on motors and trans from 272 to 312 and then 332 352 392 360 390 427 429 and 260 289 302 351w and on and on I do love those old fords
awesome job
Well I think that after looking at the lifter valley you gotta pull it, I've NEVER seen one that neglected, and I worked in a couple old wrecking yards!!!
Nice work
As for the clogging, I like to wrap some screen material around the necks of the radiator and then put the hose on top, then if it starts to run on the warm side I know it's time to drain and clean the screens.
Keep the 289 if the bores are reasonably worth honing and there is no ridge ....Replace rings if yes , pull the pan , clean up oilways etc , maybe inspection and replacement of rod and main bearings oil pump , seals and timing chain assy...
Save the 289, just sayin....greetings from Niagara.
Port those 289 heads and put on the 5.0 bigger roller cam and 4 bbl intake and carb and have you a fun hot rod while looking like a 289 then send me your 289 so that I can have a backup 😁 everyone is happy
Keep the 289. Since it’s a runner and especially if it’s the original engine. I’m a fan of keeping it original whenever possible.
For some reason, I just love those. Not 13 a dozen. Do you have the front hood moulding? Mike, buy a GALLON of Seafoam from CDN Tire, you'll need it!
Yeah don't see them that often at shows, so hopefully it'll catch people's attention/make them wonder what it is. As for the old moulding I'll have to check the trunk (loads of trim in the trunk).
@@Theoldcarchannel. Keep the auto trans in it. My take would be to get the 289 as clean as you can, run it with seafoam in the crank and make 2-3 oil changes after about 300km and many heat cycles. Then run to failure. Cheapest and easyest. Love the car, really a nice design.
302 definitely
👍
Dig the Comet content, looks like it could be on my channel
Notifications on and ready for this video. Happy weekend!!!
Appreciate it! Should be a good build series, hope you guys enjoy!
@@Theoldcarchannel. if it was a mustang I would try to save the 289 but the value of a Comet just ain’t the same so I would knock the dust off the 302 you got and go with it. 😉👊🏻💯
@@jasonwells7246 😎👍
That’s going to be nice
I'm always onboard for a Mercury!
😎👍 I wonder why lol
Love these cars...
I think it's perfect, I'd drive it just the way it is, so I can piss off my neighbors...
If the bores are within spec, I'd go with the 289. Strip it, boil, pump Boric acid through the water passages to flush out the built up calcium. Crosshatch the cylinders. Put it back together with a basic rebuild kit Lap the valves by hand and away you go. That block must be flushed. Otherwise go with the 302.
Kevin and Mook of "Junkyard Digs" had the same issue with an Arizona Bronco that they revived a few months ago.
17/32” drill is for the pivot ball for the 5.0 block for the clutch bell crank.
Nope, check out the next video to see
Greetings from sunny SW Florida 🍺🩴🩳🏖

@@joebozzelli969 That's why I'm here brothers!
@@lukeallen6444 lucky dog! I try to make my way down there during the winter holidays but covid kicked that plan this year unfortunately!
@@Theoldcarchannel. look me up if your ever in Naples.
I'd love to see an engine rebuild but I also understand that it's your time/money and it's a factor when doing this kind of stuff.
Keep the 289. Clean it up. Flushing the cooling system and cleaning the oil gallies seems in order.
derek from vgg said ebay motors has a refresh kit pretty cheap for the feller lookin to save a buck
It'll be fine.......eventually!
289 would be more entertaining to the audience but I would swap in a 5.0. So idk lol
I had a 65 Comet 289 ended up putting a 4-barrel on it a different hydraulic cam and the mechanical distributor from the 289 271 also a set of headers the car really round good till I missed your shift luckily my Ford Motor Company the 289 271 the car really ran good after that I never saw a 289 painted yellow most forgery there gold or blue I've never seen a yellow one
As far as the engine, you do what you think is best money wise. Yeah a fresh build would be great, but if you plan on flipping it then well you know.
My 65 404 had the same engine combo. Now it's upgraded a bit. Mine has the same paint, except bench seat, no Air, it's a C4 automatic.
Did you check compression prior to pulling it apart? If it had good compression I would keep the 289. If it were mine I would do a mild cam, lifters, and timing chain. And I would keep it 2 barrel, stock exhaust manifolds with dual exhaust.
Well, I'm five months late but for what its worth... I would buy and install the 5.0 and do an overhaul on the 289 as I could afford to. Once completed, I would reinstall the 289 and have a 5.0 sitting around for when needed.
it is your car do what is best for you after all you are the one who has to live with it.
