This was exactly the info that I needed. I didn't have a clue how to bring out the contrasting metals, and I was just accepting for years that my Damascus blade would just keep looking plain. I didn't have access to sulfuric Acid, so I heated some Acetic Acid ( Vinegar) and soaked it for 3 minutes. It came out perfect on my knife blade. Much appreciated !!!
Thank you much. Honestly I really didn't want to get Ferric Chloride to make Damascus. You have done me a world of favours by making this vid. You have earned a new sub
I sand to 2000 grit, polish with pink compound on the buffer. Etch with a 1:1 Ferric Chloride and White Vinegar, four times in five minute intervals. Neutralize in baking soda water, then I let it soak in the Coffee bath for 24 hours. lightly polish with a jeweler's cloth. Finally I seal it with a Carnauba Bee's wax mix. This gives me the most contrast. I have taken a little from all the greats: Rob Bonifavio, Fire Creek, and Neil Kamimura!!
@@OregonBladez Awesome, thanks for the reply. I've only worked with damascus once in the 6 years I've been making now. About to etch some stainless damascus on a gyuto I've made for myself. I'll use those intervals you're suggesting and see how I go with that. Cheers -Jye
I use diluted ferric chloride for several short cycles then I do a nice long coffee etch to darken it up. I really enjoy your videos man! I have been meaning to ask about your hilarious thumbnails, what kind of click through rate are you getting? Any how, thanks man. Cheers!
So cool. Didn’t know you use coffee. I love coffee. Would Starbucks coffee make it darker if I get the dark roast espresso? Also, does it smell like coffee if you hold it up to your nose? That would be awesome!!

Your welcome
What kind of vinegar did you use?

Thanks for watching and subscribing
Looks great
rob your the man cool video bro gonna try the coffee on my damascus i just made
I like using hot vinegar for 1 to 2 hours. Clean with soap and water then buff it.
Gorgeous
Can you re use any of the solutions after an etch?
Great video
Great video! I have a damasteel blade that I rounded the spine. Is there anyway to re-etch the spine without etching the entire blade?
Knife_Enthusiast_ Lover thanks , you could try just submerging the spine in the coffee etch only
Cover what you don't want etched with a good quality tape before etching
Qtip
Awesome damascus,he sounds like woody harrelson

Is there a reason why you soak in intervals in the ferric over say just leaving it in there? Cheers
@@j_edwards6075 the ferric tend to leave a carbon buildup as it etches. I find I get a better or more uniform etch by doing it in intervals.

@@OregonBladez Do you neutralise between each soak?
Dear sir can you tell what kind of acid h do to highlight damascus pattern please share full process
It’s just sulphuric acid
It's going to rust?
What is the acid name
Interesting with the coffee. Gonna try this when i etch my next damascus blade
What is the concentration of sulfuric acid?
40%
Does the coffee need to be hot?
It doesn’t need to be but it does work faster when it is hot
can you make a pattern on the blade of KERIS (Indonesian keris)
Why the baking soda step? Can you not simply wash it off with water?
You need to neutralize the acid or it continues etching
@@BonifabcustomRobBonifacio Understood, but wouldn't just rinsing it off with soap and water do that?
Ya probably just rinse it for longer that’s all
can i use olive oil for the final touch instead of linseed oil?
You can but keep in mind olive oil goes rancid after a while and boiled linseed and pure tung oil , dry keeping a thin coating on to prevent rust
😃👍🏻👊🏻
You look like Heidi, that disturbed me and put me off concentrating on the process.
😂
Dijual nggak bro
Safety glasses dude
I never knew it was a four step process. Forged in fire makes it look too simple to apply a good etch.
What is the acid name
Excellent video. Thanks for taking the time to film and edit it and of course for positing it for our benefit. Keep up the good work! -Migs
Migs your welcome and thanks for watching
Wouldn't you want to do another dunk in the baking soda bath to stop the etching reaction from the instant coffee as well?

Aleeknives thanks brother the crazy thumbnails have really helped get my videos seen . Any ideas on a collaboration project? Thanks
Great demonstration.
I have not used sulfuric acid so far. What percentage do you use it for etching?
Dejan Pesic thanks 🙏 i but it in bulk for battery refills so i think it’s at 60%
That coffee step was the one I was missing. I have a nice pattern in my steel, but didn't know how to make it 'pop'. Thank you!
I have a store bought katana and was wondering, will this work to enhance the pattern?
It might
Fantastic video! Very educational. I hope it catches on and you get a ton more views.
Boiled linseed is definitely not food safe. But great vid and info besides that.
hmmmmm nice

Mike Bonifacio no just crappy coffee , if it can etch hardened steel imagine what it does to your stomach
Reminds me of dying anodized aluminum. I wonder how ritz dye instead of coffee would hold up. A red blade would be sick.
It's doesn't dye, it activates nickel and carbon
Don't let La Senora find out you took off with the Espresso!
tacticalconcepts 😂😂😂
Tried it, worked nicely. Thumbs up!
Awesome
hi , thanks for for this tutorial , i'm wondering if this method will also working in stainless clad damascus san mai?
how long it will stay on the blade ?
A very long time
How did you get that pattern on the metal?
Check out some of my other videos on how i make the pattern
@HowToExcel lookup Damascus steel
