another Beautiful piece...love how much time, effort thought...u put into knifemaking...plus u share it all...so great..thx for that...u can never learn enough, see n hear new or different ways...didnt knkw about the coffee edge afterwards...always just used ferric chloride...thx for sharing.
Well I appreciate the kind words ! Thank you!
Great information. I’ve not been soaking in coffee long as you but I’ll kinda like the grey colors. Alabama Damascus is great to work with
Absolutely! Yea the coffee etch has been a game changer for me!
but why do you possible the coffe turn the damascus still ?
Excellent! Great teacher! Thanks!
Thank you! Glad it was helpful
Good job friend that pattern looks awesome…thanks
Really appreciate it!!! Have a great weekend!
I just finished 2 blades tonight using exactly this method the way he described, and they came out freaking beautiful! I will do it again in a heartbeat. Thank you young man for your information!
Nice!
Informative! Will try this on my next knife
Hopefully it helps! Thanks for watching!
Really helpful. Thank you
👊👊👊
Thanks. Good job man
👊👊👊
great video. Thanks.
Thank you! Hope you picked up a couple tricks!
Great video! Have you made one on how to finish/attach grips once the blade is etched without scratching it? Thanks for the great content!
I have done a few handle install videos! The trick with Damascus blades tho is re etching the spine once the handles are finished! I normally just use a qtip with a little ferric on it.
I accidentally touched a finished damascus blade on the grinder, and hand sanded the spots, and then re-etched using Nescafe Clasico, and it worked like a charm. A bit of work, but truly worth it to save the blade, if anyone is interested. Sand with rhe grain of the damascus in the blemished spot, so it's surface smoothness matches the rest of the blade, try to even out any peaks or valleys, gently, and then clean it well, and etch it. Like it never happened. 🤷♂️ Good thing to know, if you're in a pickle.
What if its polished beforehand
Is it possible to use the same etching mixture with vg10 stainless damascus steel? With similar results?
Always very clear and informative.
Im just about to etch some Dama steel for the first time. Does the coffee work for that to?
No coffee on the damasteel! I think I have a video up on that aswell
Thanks for the video! I’m curious about using the apple cider vinegar. What is an advantage to that? I’ve mostly heard of a 4:1 distilled water to FC mixture. Thanks.
I’m not sure I just know it works really well for me
I see this is old but I'm sure someone will need it one day. Alabama Damascus doesn't work on the 4:1 distilled as good as this mixture. Alabama Damascus is 5160 and not 1084
If the damascus wasn't then care of properly, would I go through the same process of etching again to bring it back ? Thanks, Bob
Yes!
Do you bake your oil or wax on? Or let it set at room temperature?
I just let it sit at room temp for about 24 hours
Does it have to be instant coffee? Can i just boil up a super strong pot of regular coffee grounds and get similar results?
Good question and I honestly don’t know
I need to bring life back to a customer's blade. Will the coffee stain stabilized spalted maple? I sealed it with boiled linseed and beeswax.
I probably will discolor it .
@@gentrycustomknives8008 Dang. I was afraid you might say that.
Just a question, can you do this with a victorinox huntsman knife ?
I’m not sure if they have Damascus blades for those
Coffee snobs say that life is too short for instant. At least instant coffee has has some benefit. I've heard a lot of knife makers say that only Nescafe brand is useable for etching. Makes me wonder what chemical is in it and what it does to our stomachs.
Off brand works just fine!
Can i use any metal / knife for this process?
It varys depending on steel
What ratio of vinegar to acid?
50/50
