I've built many type 4 (late model bus/vanagon engines) You can make bigger power, but the stock fuel injection is not ideal for the upgrade. Injectors have to be matched for the realistic power gains. Type 4's benefit the most from properly done exhaust work. They naturally have plenty of torque. You benefit from a better header as well.
My favorite combination for late buses and vanagons would be a 96x78 (2258cc). Mild cam, proper head work. They run cool with the stock oil cooler.
A well built 2.0 with a slight bump in compression and good head work would be the safest choice.

Thanks Monica. I ended up going with stock sizing, new heads, new positions. Keeping it as stock as possible for reliability since first motor lasted 40yrs I figured not push it for fuel or thermals. Getting a stock profile hydraulic lifter cam for manual transmission has been most difficult thing to source. I’m awaiting an OEM cam to arrive from Overseas.

Hey, looking forward to the next video. I'm in Ottawa and just picked up an 81 Westy, it hasn't started in 5 years. My project for next summer. All the best, Ed

If you got 40 years out of the original engine that's fantastic. I have replaced mine twice. Seem to get about 150,000 miles before the third cylinder compression goes. I have an external oil cooler which seems to help but...

Did a stock 2.0 rebuild, new pistons, sleeves, valves, camshaft, seals, etc and also needed a new head because valve guides had cracked. Had a lot of delays because of the pandemic. Took over a year, almost 2 to complete but I sourced all the parts.

Not sure how extensive the damage is yet. Top end needs pistons and rings for sure. Bottom
End needs to be checked for bearings and tolerances. Hopefully it doesn’t need bottom end work too. 😬🤞

How much did the build end up running you? I have an 81 westy. She ain't doing so well.

It’a not done yet. Massive delays and missteps but it was about $3600 CAD in parts so far. That is for a full top end replacement and other parts. Labour bill total is still unknown.
