It sounds like you're holding a key down when clicking each shape after they are grouped and before they are negated (one from the other). After it's grouped, I can't seem to select an individual item, no idea what you're doing here.
How can I keep my laser from cutting pieces of my text out? Please help! I followed these instructions but I guess my text is so thin it’s cutting it out with the background.

Great video but the background music was distracting.
If you don’t connect the center triangles (with a line) in the letter A you will loose them in the cut I believe.

Actually that is no longer the case as the updates have superseded this instruction set. But still lots of good information
