Is there a way to save the Materials Test Generator setup so that new materials could be run without having to set the rows and columns etc again for each new material?
Great video Rich - but I have a question. I downloaded and loaded your library for the Ortur-20W - which is also what I have. Your menu here looks nothing like mine. As a for instance - I don’t see the Dollar Cut Board. Corrugated, etc. Did I miss something?
Good eye! Yeah, that's my library, customized to my materials & environment. The libraries I make available for download are the manufacturers suggested materials, cut & engrave settings.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy thanks! Where is your forum? It’s astounding that ikier and atomstack have unprintable pdfs (one giant file with no page breaks) and can’t put all that info into a lightburn library file. Would make using the lasers 10 million times easier
Excellent tutorial ( as usual ) Rich. My only (ha) question left is the # column in the Cut/Layers menu. Is that associated in any way to the material library. If not, is it useful to use? Thanks again.
It's a descriptor column. You can name it whatever you want. For instance, I have layer #29 named, "Ebonizing Iron Acetate" and the settings for that layer are 2000/50. So whenever I want to run a job of this kind, I just put it on that layer. Once you name it and set the settings, click Make Default at the bottom of that window and it will save all of that info for that layer.
Rich, Excellent Video!! I had already downloaded the library you provided from the bb so I just made some changes to the existing files. I added the new ones to the existing plywood and cardboard. I did do the metric to imperial conversion so was working with the right thickness. I’m telling ya,, this almost seems like drinking from a fire hose. Did my first 3 burns today on plywood today and at 80% power and 3000 they were great! Only problem I had was centering the art on the workpiece; took several frame attempts to get it close. Then went through your vid on cutting board family tree to get a tip on using laser at 1% so will try that. Your videos are a very great help! I will get myself set up to help support. Thanks again!
Rich, your videos are really helping. I’m new to Lightburn and engraving. I have the atomstack 20. Would you tell me what settings you use for MDF board?
Hi, Rich, I am very new to laser cutting and I do enjoy your videos. I started my Art Library and I have a question. I named my first library Lightburn and I would like to know if I can change the name or do I start a new Art Library?
Great job Rich. Thanks for all your time and effort. Not sure if you have already addressed this question, but as a rookie how do we know what power settings and speeds we are supposed to assign to our project. And how does line, fill, etc. affect the final burn? If you have already addressed this in a video, let me know which one it is please.
hi rich i have a material library but when i assign it to a layer and try to start the project i get a communication error but if i manually enter the details into the layer it works fine any ideas
Wow! Great video! Thank you for taking the time to show us. I haven't ordered my laser yet 1 week to go but I've been studying a lot. This will definitely help me.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy ok, I just know in your videos you kept saying 20w...and I was leaning towards the newer 40w, but I wanted it to work with your programs after joining...which I have.
I am new to your channel. I have been using Lightburn for a couple of years and was thinking that i might not continue to use it as i really couldn’t see the relevance and things were just too hard to use. Wow was i wrong! After three days of watching your videos you have opened up an entirely new insight. I am now setting and learning the correct and easy way to use this software. Thank you for all you are doing. There are a lot of people out there that know how but they are hard to listen to and they don’t know how to teach. You sir are easy to listen to and you teach well. I heard you make a statement in one of your videos about using Lightburn to run the CNC? Did i misunderstand? I will look to see if you have a series on that also. Again thanks from Midlothian Texas!
Hello, I love your channel, nobody explains like you. I congratulate you for helping people like me who have no idea how to start on this topic. Could you help me, how many mm are there from the laser to the mdf wood to be able to cut it. I have already more than a month with the Ortur Master 2 20w and I only manage to burn the 3mm mdf, it does not cut it. Thank you
The default focal distance for the LM2 is 29mm (from the bottom of the lens to the object) for engraving. To cut, you deduct 1/2 the thickness of the workpiece. So, for example, if you want to cut 6mm, you would lower the focus to 26mm Joaco.
While learning, I created a Material library and then saved it as suggested by you, but when tried to load it, the saved file didn’t show in the folder where I saved it. I am running the Trial version, is that the reason the file didn’t save in the correct format, which can be accessed by Lightburn. When checked in the explorer screen, the saved file type is CLB File, whereas the software is looking for *.lbart format, is that so. Please help! Thanks
Man, this really helped me out! I am preparing for my laser experience right now and soaking in a ton of information. In my head, I look forward to building my library with my own laser settings for as many types of materials I can get my hands on. That way, I don't have to run test files or examples except on new materials! Thanks!!
Excellent concept. Trying to learn all of the ways to be efficient and get consistent. I can see this is an excellent concept and one I will start immediately. Just curious, why do you have so many machines? Is it intellectual curiosity on your part or is there certain advantages that you are making use of? Just curious.
Originally, I had an Amazon store, selling slate coasters and wooden signs, so I had four dedicated machines running 8-10 hours a day. Now I want to keep up with all the brands for when people ask questions, so I accept the offers from the manufacturers to review their machines.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy sounds like a good way to stay on top of what is going on in the industry. Must’ve been stressful running that hard to keep up with Amazon store.

Hey I like you tutorials very much I learn a lots from you tks again. I have a question I am French living in south of france, what is the difference between Etching and engraving and cutting I look on line, a bit confusing to be honest, can you explain with a tutorial if possible .thanks again
Bonjour Stephen, etching is a chemical process, usually done on glass and metals, while engraving is a physical process done via a machine with a router or a laser; both are actually CNC machines. Laser engraving is a process that vaporizes materials into fumes to engrave permanent, deep marks on other materials, like wood, metals, leather, cardboard, etc. The two terms are used interchangeably by hobbyists though they are completely different processes. Cutting is exactly what it sounds like; you set the intensity higher and the speed lower to cut all the way through the material. Thank you for the question! 👍
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy thank you thank you .........I try I try like to get setting right before saving then to library. I do specifically on leather but other materials will be for later
Fairly new subscriber, even though I do not yet own a laser or lightburn I was able to follow along and understand exactly what you are doing. Going to join your forum as well.
I wish the name of the library entry selected populated the Name of the layer you assigned it too, so you can see later which option you have assigned to which layer without having to compare the settings, or reapply to be sure...
Hey Rich, do you share your material library as well? I know each laser is going to behave different but might give me a head start on figuring these out and entering all their values. I'm also using the OrturLaserMaster2 pro so some settings would likely be the same. Thanks for all you do for this community!
how far off are these for bmaking the material list from when you did them win 0.9.1 i think it said to 1.4.00? I know when i was trying to follow along i was getting so mad at myself for missing some small something. i had to have missed it. when you went into the fill parts my brain was either shutting down and taking a rest or my eyes were playing tricks on me. then i realized you might be doing from older version. so when you make the second set in fill it does like a second subsection if im saying that right.😁🤣
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuybut you give a great starting point as soon as i figured the difference out it was spot on from then on. thank you for all you do my friend
There is a type of person who makes these types of comments. No, I’m not attacking you, Steve, but I happened to have been involved in a project at Bose where they decided to play music in all of the cafeterias. The overwhelming majority of people were happy about it and many people had suggestions for the type of music we played, some folks didn’t even notice the change. However, there was a small number of people who were ANGRY about it. One guy in particular repeatedly went into the room where the music server was and DISASSEMBLED it. Security became involved. Cameras were setup to try and figure out what was going on. The guy was caught sneaking into the room and disconnecting all of the cables etc. A different guy was caught on camera messing with the external volume controls. He would turn the volume all the way down and then lock the controls, since he was involved in designing them, he knew how to do it. So yes, there are people who are so bothered by the presence of music that they’ll protest and eventually take matters into their own hands to eliminate it. What I can tell you with certainty is that it’s you. I don’t know why, but I know that it’s only a small number of people. Those types often believe that everyone feels the same way, but they don’t. Most people enjoy music in the background. Some people lose their shit…
@@michaelkeymont501Jesus, took you all that time to write that ridiculous reply. I can tell you there are people that think they know it all and have everyone figured out. Typically they are engineers, which I'd be shocked to hear if you aren't one. Either way, you are one of those ridiculous people. He was spot on, the music is distracting and annoying. That's why Rich eliminated them a while ago. NOBODY likes background music in how to videos, except one lonely, long winded engineer that worked for Blose

How do you make your text so nice and visible? I can barely see mine, especially the lighter colors
I burn the text hot.
Wonderful video and as always very informative. I think we all needed this for us that use LIGHTBURN. Thanks. I think I am watchin all your videos backwards. I jump around watchin them. hehe
Thanks for watching Karl!
Is there a way to save the Materials Test Generator setup so that new materials could be run without having to set the rows and columns etc again for each new material?
Yup, just hit the little floppy disk icon right next to where it says PRESETS and name it.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy OK, gotcha. Thanks for the clarification!
thanks for all your videos, do you know anyone that has downloadable lightburn library files for the Ikier k1 or the R30 laser head?
No, not yet, they're too new to the market. As far as I know, my forum is the only place you can get libraries.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy thanks! Where is your forum? It’s astounding that ikier and atomstack have unprintable pdfs (one giant file with no page breaks) and can’t put all that info into a lightburn library file. Would make using the lasers 10 million times easier
Links are in the description of all of my videos.
Super useful! Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thanks Rich. Great answer
*Great to hear Elmer!* 👍 I have a new FAQ video coming out in the morning that you'll want to watch as well. Thanks so much for watching!
What is the link to the on the "bb", please.
Rich, your videos are really helping. I’m new to Lightburn and engraving. I have the atomstack 20. Would you tell me what settings you use for MDF board?
I don't have the Atomstack 20W Becky, but settings are gotten from running test cards. See my latest video to learn how.
Hi, Rich, I am very new to laser cutting and I do enjoy your videos. I started my Art Library and I have a question. I named my first library Lightburn and I would like to know if I can change the name or do I start a new Art Library?
Yes, just go to the folder where you saved the library and rename it Dan.
I LUV YOU MAN, This is amazing.
Thank you! 🌞
Great videos! These really help save a lot of time for us rookies.
Glad you like them! 👍
Another great information video 👍
Thanks 👍
Great job Rich. Thanks for all your time and effort. Not sure if you have already addressed this question, but as a rookie how do we know what power settings and speeds we are supposed to assign to our project. And how does line, fill, etc. affect the final burn? If you have already addressed this in a video, let me know which one it is please.
Hi David, try this video, it will answer your questions: ua-cam.com/video/VPuBrrhRedg/v-deo.html
hi rich i have a material library but when i assign it to a layer and try to start the project i get a communication error but if i manually enter the details into the layer it works fine any ideas
Never heard of that one! Post it on the Lightburn forum. They'll be able to answer it!
Thank you so much for this video! It helped me with a major mistake I was making. I didn't realize I could keep my settings separate from my layers!
Glad it helped! Thanks so much for watching! :-)
i love your video. easy to follow and understand. it helped me a lot
Glad it helped! Thank you!
Wow! Great video! Thank you for taking the time to show us. I haven't ordered my laser yet 1 week to go but I've been studying a lot. This will definitely help me.
I just did a more comprehensive video today! Check it out!
I don't have libary in windows
I show you in the first 2 min of the video.
What big difference are there between the 20watt & 40 watt laser Neje offers?
One has 5.5W of optical output and the other has 14.2W (supposedly, manufacturer claims)
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy in your opinion for a 1st time laser buyer, what would you recommend?
Hard to say Tom. Depends on what you're using it for. For a beginner I would probably recommend a Neje model with the 30 or 40W laser.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy ok, I just know in your videos you kept saying 20w...and I was leaning towards the newer 40w, but I wanted it to work with your programs after joining...which I have.
@@tommybrannon When I say 20W, that's 5.5W output. 30W is 7.2W. 40W is 14.4W.
How do I create a layer for an image, I want to use gray scale? Thanks.
I don't know what you mean Mike.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy In lightburn, library?
I don't understand the question. You can put an image on any layer you wish and import any image into your library.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy when I have an image on the screen in lightburn how do I create those settings into a new layer in library?
I'm still not getting the question Mike, sorry. The library saves your images and vectors. Settings are on the Cuts and layer tab.
THANK YOU SIR, BEST EXPLANATION.
You are most welcome Orlando! Thank you for watching! 👍
Thanks! Yes I do use it for my Prover in 2D.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuy Thank you
While learning, I created a Material library and then saved it as suggested by you, but when tried to load it, the saved file didn’t show in the folder where I saved it. I am running the Trial version, is that the reason the file didn’t save in the correct format, which can be accessed by Lightburn.
When checked in the explorer screen, the saved file type is CLB File, whereas the software is looking for *.lbart format, is that so. Please help!
Thanks
You're on the tab that says Art Library. Switch to the tab that says Library and then you can load the clb file.
You are right, you know this software extremely well. Awesome, regards
Man, this really helped me out! I am preparing for my laser experience right now and soaking in a ton of information. In my head, I look forward to building my library with my own laser settings for as many types of materials I can get my hands on. That way, I don't have to run test files or examples except on new materials! Thanks!!
Great to hear Jason! A library and tested settings makes this hobby so much easier and more satisfying!
@@RobSandstromDesigns That's why I stopped! Plus too many customers making returns of the exact item they saw on the website. When you stock on Amazon Prime, you never get the item back but you still get debited the profit! Only the personalized ones come back.
Great Video...Thanks !!
Glad you liked it Darin!
Fairly new subscriber, even though I do not yet own a laser or lightburn I was able to follow along and understand exactly what you are doing.
Going to join your forum as well.
Welcome to the obsession Dan... you'll have one soon enough 😎 Enter my monthly raffle and maybe you'll get one for free! lahobbyguy.com/m40laser
I wish the name of the library entry selected populated the Name of the layer you assigned it too, so you can see later which option you have assigned to which layer without having to compare the settings, or reapply to be sure...
I have a long wish list for the libraries. You can suggest it on their website.
Hey Rich, do you share your material library as well? I know each laser is going to behave different but might give me a head start on figuring these out and entering all their values. I'm also using the OrturLaserMaster2 pro so some settings would likely be the same. Thanks for all you do for this community!
Yes, of course! They are available in the Member's Only Download section of my Forum. lahobbyguy.com/bb/
how far off are these for bmaking the material list from when you did them win 0.9.1 i think it said to 1.4.00? I know when i was trying to follow along i was getting so mad at myself for missing some small something. i had to have missed it. when you went into the fill parts my brain was either shutting down and taking a rest or my eyes were playing tricks on me. then i realized you might be doing from older version. so when you make the second set in fill it does like a second subsection if im saying that right.😁🤣
Lightburn keeps upgrading the software, so some of the older videos no longer apply.
@@TheLouisianaHobbyGuybut you give a great starting point as soon as i figured the difference out it was spot on from then on. thank you for all you do my friend
I love your videos which are really helpful, the background music is very distracting though.
There are only a couple of very early videos with music. I eliminated it a long time ago Steve.
@@LetsDIYIt Um, that was 2 paragraphs. It probably took me under a minute, maybe 2.
I told a related story, I didn't claim to have everyone figured out, but we literally conducted a study of the topic, with real people.
Relax. You're clearly one of the people that loses their shit.
