Regarding the "manually setting the volume": This screen is only necessary to get all the speakers ROUGHLY to the same level (to prevent you from having a too low or to high volume while measuring the speakers). Dirac will calculate the final level gains of each channel automatically, of course. :) Furthermore, there is the recommendation to have ~30 db SNR between your room's background noise and the actual measurement sweeps. I.e. if Dirac shows a background noise of -50dB for the microphone, the volume level of each speaker should ideally be at roughly ~20dB.
I’ve really enjoyed this series so far, thank you. What you said about heights/sound localisation was especially interesting as I just recently garnered some fascinating results of my own: I own the RZ70 and have been tinkering with Dirac Live (2x subs, no DLBC) for about a year now and just recently purchased a Sony AN1000 to test out their 360 Spatial Mapping tech. What I found was the RZ70 clearly had a tighter, more precise and impactful front stage, especially regarding the subwoofers… however the Sony clearly had better pinpoint localisation of sound effects in the surrounds and heights… actually the first time I enjoyed Atmos and felt that envelopment others speak of. I think there are other factors at play here, like the heights being in-ceilings not optimally placed and zero room treatment (yet), however it does raise an important question about how the algorithms compare (360SSM vs Dirac vs Audyssey vs ARC Gen) and like others have mentioned already, I think you’re in an excellent position to compare some of these in your ‘perfectly speaker placed room,’ especially with regards to which of the softwares/receivers better localise effects around the room? Thanks again, absolutely loving this series…! Nickolas
Thank you so much!! I have plans to use the small theater as kind of a lab to do the sort of testing you’re describing. Will be interesting to hear how different receivers and processors compare, with all other factors being equal. Glad to hear you’re enjoying the videos. Thanks for watching!
My opinion on ATMOS and localized sound - to me it is the subtle additions to the soundscape; it's the cherry on top. It should not be over the top, and you should not be localizing the height speakers at all. Room treatment is key here. On my second theater build I hired Home Theater Gurus for a sound treatment build, and during the build I blasted 2-channel music at the main L/R positions on cheap DIY speakers - and even without carpet they sounded great. Room treatment + DIRAC Live = sound bliss. Add to that your height speakers and you get the dazzling sound stage, but you never can pinpoint exactly where the speakers are - you just know Maverick has been underneath Rooster the entire time until he rolls inverted over the top of him. The tomahawk cruise missiles are blasting over the Dagger attack formation, but the F18s remain the star of the show.
That's a matter of opinion. I personally, enjoy being able to hear my Atmos speakers. I want them to stand out. Luckily, we can set up our systems to where they sound best to us, which is all that matters.😊
Man. I’m soo envious of this setup!! This is exactly what I have envisioned for when we move into our next rental house if I get a dedicated space/room in the basement. 🎉 Please make some demos!!! 🎉
Thanks for the video George, the mini theather has come a long way!! Would love to see a video comparing your theaters based on speaker placement. I know that this mini theater has optimal placement of speakers so it would be interesting to hear how much of a difference that actually made as compared to your basement theater.
Hi....just did Dirac on my RZ 70...really brought sound to another level....my SVS ultra system..and dual Def Tech DNS subs... Chane 4.5 height speakers are much much alive👍
This has been a good series. Your comments about our ears and height localization abilities as something new to you makes me guess you never looked into Auro3D. It definitely lost the format battle but the science behind it is based on the what you heard from your height speakers. I've never had Auro3D in my system, just read about it and heard enough interviews so im only conceptually aware of how its different in approach from Dolby Atmos. I was on team HD DVD so no need to blow money on a loosing format again even if it has some technical merit.
Thanks for the video. It says that it does not equalize in the entire frequency range, only up to 500 Hz. In the graph that appears at minute 6, a fairly pronounced valley can be seen from 1.5 to 2.5 Khz. Does the Central channel and the other frontal channel also have that valley? Written with a translator. Greetings
@@GeorgeTheaterAtHome Well, do the test by raising that valley (final ear test) between 1.5 to 2.5 Khz and it will count if you notice more punch in the final sound. Can you upload the REW .mdat file and see the acoustics of your room?
I have an Onkyo RZ50 and when I put in my account on my pc says I don’t have a license. The microphone that comes with it is sensitive and you need a quiet room
It could be your internet when running the software. I have the Onkyo rz50, and it only takes around 3 or 4 minutes to load. Thanks for the video! P.s. when are you gonna update the mini dsp video?
If you're still semi interested in direct live bass control they do Black Friday sales and it's currently 25% off, still kind of expensive but best time to buy it
We only localise elevated sounds well up to about 30 degrees and mostly can't at all above 40 degrees. Though it's worth remembering speakers have a radial pattern so you may receive some sound off axis to where you've actually placed them. The ideal setup for a single row is x.x.4.2. 4 heights and 2 tops. But additional tops can help for multiple rows as their angle narrows between rows. But that's only for objects that will actually use all of those speakers spatially. Unfortunately a lot of Atmos tracks aren't the best and are rushed jobs often only giving overhead sounds if you're lucky.
Great video!! Please go into detail on those acoustic panels!! Did you make them? Why did you choose the locations? Do you need ceiling panels? Etc. 🎉 Never heard Dirac but always wanted to experience it and incorporate someday. 🎉
Nice video! I plan on trying out Dirac Live soon so I enjoy hearing other people's perspective on it. How would you compare the sound vs ARC Genesis? Also, just curious what wall mounts are those for your surrounds and height speakers?

Luckily, I did not have any issue connecting to my onkyo 7100. Laptop was on wifi. AVR was wired. I just bought a laptop for like $800, so I don't have the best laptop but exporting the calibration took like 1 minute or so. To be honest, I was shocked how much better my system sounded (to me) when I turned OFF the calibration. lol It's kinda hard testing with regular movies but it's better to check this with music. I was listening to Hans Zimmer Live in Prague dvd and it was so much better without the calibration
How do you define theater? I have a TV and surround sound speakers in my living room and I wouldn't tell people it's a theater. I see this term get misused a lot on the internet, to me a home theater describes a room specifically constructed for that purpose and has little to do with the electronics. Double layers of drywall, floating floor, in wall wiring runs, theater style lighting, etc are hall marks of a home theater and it's not cheap.
“Theater” means something different to different people. I’ve seen this topic debated endlessly online. At the end of the day there are infinite number of ways to build a setup for consuming media. It’s tough to nail down where the line is to say one way is legit and another is not.
This video was fascinating... its a shame they limit the purchase to the receiver and not the account holder... I need to find a detailed video explaining curves and frequencies and cross overs (hint hint) :)
Oh man that’s a tough question. I’ve only run Dirac a couple times so it’s hard to say which one I prefer. I do love my Anthem AVM70. Either one is going to be a great choice. Hard to go wrong with either one.
@ thank you outside the Dirac/ARC which unit do you prefer overall. I’ve heard people complain that Anthem doesn’t have the output they would like and that it seems to have a lot of bugs at times.
I have the AVM70 so it’s all external amplification. I’ve got really good amps so the output is huge. But I also use all external amplification on my RZ50 😁. I think Anthem has mostly got all their bugs resolved. I haven’t noticed anything significant. Have you considered getting the MRX740 and using external amplification?
@ yeah I have considered it as well, I don’t recall why I was thinking of the 1140 over the 740 maybe it is the number of outputs. I’ll have to look into all options again, I’m looking at a 7.2.4 setup so maybe the 1140 over the 740 due to number of outputs and I don’t recall the rz70 outputs either. I think the 1140 has separate sub outputs over the 740
Great videos and love how the theater has come together. Just curious, are you using a powered sub? If so, what do you use for the receiver sub level and what are the sub gain and crossover Hertz settings at? Thanks
Great video. I also have a small room (3x5m) 7.4.4 setup and I'm considering Dirac live on my Marantz cinema 50. My question is, knowing what you know now, would you be willing to pay for it on your receiver for this room?
That’s an excellent question. And a tough one! I think you’re probably good with sticking with Audyssey on your AVR. The less expensive upgrade would be to buy the $20 app for Audyssey if you haven’t already. That is something I definitely recommend.
I know it’s maybe not what you’re planning to do with this specific bill but I’d be curious since you have all external notification if you could do an ANB comparison to AVM 70 with arc calibration. Reason I’m asking is I want to set up a office system just like you’re showing here and considering moving my anthem MRX or getting the Onkyo like you have here

Dirac live is not good for theater. IT nutters the bass. My Anthem with Arc Genesis did that too. I have a Denon 3800 and Cinema 50. Stay away from Dirac for home theater. Many people are just trying to make content

because it's most probably you are used to midrange being like 5db high
100-400hz
so it feels wrong because you are used to that and you like that type of sound but dirac doesn't know what you like
it just tries to level all the frequencies
but you could go in there and try to increase the midrange to what your speaker measurmenent was
maybe decrease the curve a bit by 3 db
you can tinker around and try different presets
you don't have to only use harman curves etc
you can create your curve that sounds the best to your ears

first you need to change the mode to adjust the target curve
by default its on a mode where you don't have much control
if you set it to another mode
then you can add control points
and that's where you can do what you want
its in the right corner
there are 2 small logos
you just need to press the one that allows control points
you can also add front right and left and center all in one group
or seperate them if you want
you can also control the curtain
which is the range the software will let you add controls
for example if you want the software to only allow correction for 100-400hz
u can use the curtain to only allow that range to be corrected while the other freq range will be untouched
i also didnt like how dirac live sound flat
i increased the mids and lows a bit more and boosted the high a tiny bit
i can't believe how good it sounds just using the puck mic

Tears of the Kingdom OLED Switch Dock. 👍
Eagle eye viewer! 😉
Dirac is a game changer it changed my sound for the better in a big way I had no bass at all coming from my speakers at all did Dirac and now it sounds like I have a small sub running and that’s without dlbc . Speaking of dlbc it’s on bf sale for 239
Dirac live is not good for theater. IT nutters the bass. My Anthem with Arc Genesis did that too. I have a Denon 3800 and Cinema 50. Stay away from Dirac for home theater. Many people are just trying to make content
Not true at all in fact the complete opposite in my room bass went from weak and anemic to sounding like I have a small sub
It seems to work well in my space. The bass is quite pronounced and impactful despite only having a 10” sub.
@ if you say so. I’ve never heard Dirac live having impactful bass. You get more mid bass but impactful I would beg to differ.
@ ok. Pronounced ? You mean mid bass? Onkyo doesn’t give low end extension well unless Dirac is disabled. I wish you would try an anthem. You would never go back
@PIPERBOYWILLIAMS I have an AVM70 in my regular theater. Love it!
