  • Rudyard Kipling's "If" (sometimes subtitled "A Father's Advice to His Son") - 1895.
    Published in the book "Rewards and Fairies" (1910)
    following the short story "Brother Square-Toes"
    If you can keep your head when all about you
    Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
    If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
    But make allowance for their doubting too;
    If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
    Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
    Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
    And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
    If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
    If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
    If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
    And treat those two impostors just the same;
    If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
    Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
    Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
    And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools:
    If you can make one heap of all your winnings
    And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
    And lose, and start again at your beginnings
    And never breathe a word about your loss;
    If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
    To serve your turn long after they are gone,
    And so hold on when there is nothing in you
    Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'
    If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
    Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch,
    If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
    If all men count with you, but none too much;
    If you can fill the unforgiving minute
    With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
    Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
    And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!
    My favourite poem to this day. A must for any actor.

    Thank you for your kind comment, Fenete. Yes indeed I like this Spanish version of yours very much. This is the very reason why I've sent you a video response. Thank you for accepting it. I think your interpretation is very sensitive. Besides, your diction is excellent and you make people like the sound of Castilian (I wish I had this language). I think you have a very good voice for poetry.

    I'm working on a German translation (with the assistance of my friend Janet). One verse is translated so far. I'll keep you informed.

    Unfortunately I have unpleasant news concerning the "If & Amazing Grace" video. I have received yesterday an em@il from a young lady who acts as the "animator" of the Gospel for Hope choir. She demands that the part concerned with the singing of Amazing Grace should be withdrawn from the video. Which of course is technically impossible once the video is uploaded.
    What I'll have to do is make a new editing from the elements I have used and produce a new video restricted to my reading of Rudyard Kipling's 'If'.
    That means the older video including 'Amazing Grace' will have to be privatized, i.e. no longer accessible to the public. Only my own circle of Google+ friends will be able to. I will do so as soon as the editing for the new video is ready.

      Is it possible to share the version privately? I would love to hear it?

    Je viens de terminer le sous-titrage en français. Vous le trouverez dans le menu "captions". Il faut sélectionner «French (OAC)» - si on sélectionne «English», on a une transcription du texte original de Kipling.
    C'est la première fois que je traduis "If". Je vais sûrement être durement critiqué. Je n'ai jamais été très fana des traductions françaises qui ont été publiées; je les trouve ampoulées.
    J'ai donc adopté le vers libre; pas d'alexandrins, pas de rimes.
