IF by Rudyard Kipling (A Life Changing Poem)

- Опубліковано 1 жов 2020
- Rudyard Kipling was a prolific poet, novelist and journalist and one of the most well-known Victorian writers of his time. In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for his great body of work which included 'The Jungle Book' and his enduring poetic masterpiece 'If'.
In perhaps one of the most inspirational poems ever written, Kipling outlines for his son the behaviours and attitudes it takes to become a man, advising his son about how to perceive the world and life's challenges so that he can both learn from his experiences and resolutely overcome barriers.
This poem is one of our favourites and we hope you find our rendition of it worthy of the words.

My dad gave me this poem at 15, I’m now 31 and without it things could’ve been very different. He’s not here anymore but the lessons he taught live on. Every man needs to hear this
I printed this out for my 15 year old and put it beside his desk in late 2020 as he was starting his second year of high school from home.
Maybe he read it from time to time.
Hope he knows how much I love him.

THE GREATEST POEM EVER WRITTEN!!!!!!!
IF
"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!"
I just wanted to say that this poem appeared on my feed the day I was planning the route of the coward, the loss of my own hope in myself, and now I can stop thinking about it on every second I live, I stopped drinking, stopped gaming, I said no more to my addictions.
I'm studying, trying, fighting for my own place. And I won't give up I promise, but whoever runs this channel on UA-cam; I just wanted to thank you.
I'll for sure will never meet you and maybe this message you'll never read, but to me you're important now, and probably in years to come. You saved my life and my heart is at peace, because I am now facing my own defeat with my head up, and I'm not wearing a crown for doing so.
To you, sir or madam, thank you.
Edit - Jan 12:
Hello everyone, I was surely not expecting my comment to gather so much attention, but I feel that I should share that I am doing way better than when I wrote this original post. I put effort into my studying, and I managed to get a scholarship, I placed effort in my body, and now I am training daily, I am not drinking at all and I wake up with energy to face off the marvel that it's a day. As Kipling will say "fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds of distance run". I may not be doing the whole sixty but it's way better than what I were two months ago, so to whoever reads this, please, I know you don't even know me, but don't give up, life has its own beauty but it for sure doesn't come in a silver plate. I hope you can at least give it another chance with a different perspective.
And thank you everyone for your kind words.
August-11:
Just to keep you posted on how life under a new light can be blissful, what looked grim now looks grey and what looked grey now has light by itself. Be thankful for being here, despite all, you're alive, you're breathing and life can be enjoyed, YOU WILL FALL, TRIP, STUMBLE, that's a FACT, but the important thing is WHAT YOU DO after hitting the ground with your face.
GET UP and keep moving, stop stagnation.
I kept doing that, standing up, now I have a job, I live by myself, my own rules, I have shifted my life 180 degrees and 3 stories higher (my new apt is on the third floor, yes it's a rental but IT'S MY FLOOR), it's incredible what a daily routine and dedication to achieve your own goals can bring.
Don't give up, I didn't, you can't, you're valuable.
Stay safe, and be happy.

Keep studying and improving your life. Always try to see things from the other person 's point of view. Be always kind, honest and truthful not just to others but to yourself. There's a bright new world out there waiting for you to embrace it. YOU can and will make a difference ..Keep up the good work.
Anybody can fool the whole world, but himself. To be really honest with ourselves is a huge achievement. A man who can defeat his addictions, can defeat anything.
Frenchie, my friend, I'm so glad you didn't give in. Don't EVER give in!
I once was in a bad place myself, but I resisted that pain. Now, years later, I grow more determined with each passing day to get up again, and again, and again no matter what anyone throws my way. We get but one life, and if you live 90 years and only know a few moments of happiness, it's worth the wait. Life is good.

Kipling wrote the poem in 1910 as a father's wish for his 12 year old son. 5 years later his only son died during WWI.
I learned about this poem two years ago, and I told my father about it. He told me exactly this. I believe there is a lesson to be learned from it. Imagine being a father and writing such a powerful poem, scraping up what you've learned to give direction to your son... only for it to become so suddenly insignificant. It fucking breaks my heart.
🙂❤️ Never lose hopes
But in those last moments, if these words were not spoken, could he have met death so well?
Death comes for us all. Some run a long race and some run a short race. It isn't about how long the race is but how you run it. I like to think that this helped his son face the life he was given. His words do not lose their meaning because his son's race was short.

My favorite poem. I realize it's from father to son but when my grandfather passed I sent it to my Mom and it helped her immensely. For more than a year she did everything in her power to help him be as comfortable as possible. Your father raised you to be the person you are now. They have done enough whatever they can they did it. Never ever demand more from people who have already done for you. Repay them back and live a happy life. That is what we all deserve. 😊
Forgive and rejoice. Most in this world live spiritually at lower levels of consciousness with increasingly few living at the next higher level. Perhaps roughly 20% of fathers would think to share such a poem with their son. Kipling's work is written at a high level of consciousness, probably beyond reason to love.

I feel that King Mufasa is giving me advice this Christmas.
If you listen to it with an open mind, you will be surprised of its wisdom. ua-cam.com/video/iyIwsilha_M/v-deo.html

"If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise"
This was one of the first poems I had to learn in school. I can still quote it by heart and it is still inspirational.
I wish I could have shared this with my son before he left this world at the tender age of 33 years.
Passing my condolences to you, sir. You did your best to raise him
May God give you comfort with such a terrible loss

I first read this poem as a 12 year old. It seemed to me to be the most perfect description of a way of life with the best reward and I have tried to live it. That was sixty years ago. By the way, I'm female.
Was it difficult to read when you were 12 ? I imagine candle light is not easy to read to. I'm getting ahead of myself here, I don't believe they actually had fire yet back then.
@@thomasmitchell4128 It doesn't cost you anything to be nice.
@@finleygal2490 it doesn't cost anything to be mean either. And luckily for me when I wrote out that comment you responded to it didn't cost me anything to make stupid jokes. Come on now.
@@thomasmitchell4128 You’re being facetious to a 70 year old. Your reply says way more about you than about the living conditions in the 1960s.
Gender doesn't matter...its about the way you live your life...☺
Kipling was a brilliant writer and poet. His words echo through the ages. They are as true today as the day he wrote them. Maybe more so now.
The last time I experienced this poem was in high school. Now, hearing it at 46, I can feel the depth of the words so much more. There is an astute understanding now that just didn't register back then. This realization furthers my belief that anyone who doesn't relish getting older is a fool.
You have to live it to know it. When youre young, you dont know what you dont know.
When my whole world collapsed, I sought out this poem. Every little bit helps to heal. It is one of the greatest poems I've ever read.
This poem is a Titan in the ranks of poetry and a Colossus in all the advice you can ever give a person.... distilled in its purest perfect form.
Really
Damn man run or Kratos will kill you
Titan is my fave, and Rossetti
Described it perfectly!!
I once recited this on Philosophy back in 2018. Now in 2022, this hits so different when all your life you only have your IFs and you just realized.
Some times words travel through time...that's the magic. How words so simple but put together so eloquently, can create a passage for those seeking answers to this crazy world. These words hit so deep and during unprecedented times, just ups the power of his words. ❤
My favorite poem, I read this in the 8th grade. Been with me ever since”If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs”. This comes to me in situations in life, keeps me level along with the confidence of having the Lord Jesus Christ with me, making the journey much easier.
I rather lead a difficult life than have to believe in fairy tales to make it easier.
It's the best poem by far I've ever read. It shows us how to live. It become my anthem.

You are a wise man already. The Lord is with you and if anyone or everyone can’t get deep enough to comfort your soul, He will be right there. That is how I was able to undoubtedly know his Incalculable love for Us all.
"And blaming it on you" has always been something I get hung up on. I've always had the tendency to believe people when they say there's something wrong with me, but I'm getting better about that.
The poem "IF" teaches me the path I have to walk daily !👍🙏👌
The most wonderful, touching, tone-induced, heartfelt reading. WOW. IF!!!
My English Teacher made me read this poem in class when i was just 14 years old and i didn't understand the meaning. I didn't even thought it's this deep. Now, I got to understand it my own.
Life teaches us and makes us able to understand ...
Same with me dear! With every passing experience some line of this poem strikes in head and explains itself!
Hello Ana how are you doing?
I learned it as a kid too, I agree that it goes over our heads as kids.
The poem addresses little, if anything, meaningful to a 14 year old.
Theres a whole lot of self responsibility in there.
Lacking in our current 2020.

@@snowdevil002 or did I?
Totally. Accountability, integrity, ownership, these virtues have been under attack by our decaying culture for decades.
I think it is kind of daring us to live up to our potential....
God, I love this poem! I will never forget the day that I first read it. I was a teenager. It hit me like a thunder clap. I am now in my 40s and every time I read it, I take something new from it. I gain some new insight into it. Kipling was a brilliant man, an absolutely brilliant brilliant man. He actually did write this for his son. He never imagined it would catch on as much as it did. Tragically, his son John was killed in World War I. His lament for him is absolutely heartbreaking. This was a very well done reading.
I taught this to grade 7! They are all in love with this poem! Such stimulating and powerful words!!!
My grandfather shared this poem with my father, and my father shared this to me and my siblings. This has become part of his legacy and I will share this one day with my kids. I’ve been trying to live my life this way for the past 20 years and I’m a better man because of it.
If you’re searching for meaning or in a dark place, live your life one day at a time by these worlds and you’ll create a better future for your family and loved ones
Every word is so deep and worth contemplating. I’ve lived this poem, as a military officer, and it resonates with me.

This is how I fell in love with poetry, 40 years ago. And I still read it at least once a week. And I have it framed 👌
Great idea about framing it. I'll do that for me and kids to read it everyday
Vaše představa, že potřebuju zrovna já nějak překalibrovat myšlení je úsměvná!
Jste zábavný, jediný, co potřebuju, je čekat...
A pak opustit zemi čůráků... Takhle jsem překřtil Českou Republiku...
Pak začne můj život, který jste před osmi lety ukončili...
A buďte rádi, že to tak dobře dopadlo.
Been having really tough long days, my girlfriend has fallen really ill. There are days i just want to cry and give up. Wisdom like this helps. One love to all.
Almost in tears, this poem reminds me of a very special high school teacher of mine. Mr Petty recited it so eloquently, it was put in our year book, beside his picture, and t was read at his funeral as well 🥰🥰
This poem ruled on my heart for 5 year.

I watched this sitting outside in sun and when the Poem ended all I could see on my screen was the reflection of my face.
A copy of this poem is hanged on my reception area more than 30 thirty years after I stumbled upon this gem of a message!
Main points that stick with me: Trusting your self when all men doubt you,Being hated don't give way to hate(Not meeting people on their level) Treating triumph and disaster the same(not letting your emotions get the best of you, continuing on the same way whether you are met with victory or defeat in a sense)
poem is deeper than most can realize.

Agreed. Instruction without standards are just words.
The fact that this poem lives on one hundred years after its conception serves as a testament to how powerful it is.
"IF" by Rudyard Kipling has been a favorite since a child. My father had a copy of a framed "IF" for my brother 75 yrs ago. I had given a couple sm books of KIplings poetry to others yrs back. I still treasure the one that I have. I tried to follow the precepts of Kipplings IF even after maturity.- but failed miserably. The realization as humans we all fall short at times in life. The key is picking oneself up keep on trucking....
Doing the best we can.. ( this poem has such magnitude for all ages, the young ..men and women )
I learnt this poem at the start of secondary school - I was fascinated by it. The depth of meaning it it almost goes beyond comprehension; as I get older, wiser, I discover more. I have read this poem to my three sons. Kipling's works are amazing! The other poem that impressed me as a child was Ozymandias. Why don't school teach these classics any more?
Too busy with pronouns and genders.
This was on our walls in the military academy. Never paid much attention to it then, appreciate it more now.
