Great for upgrading an earlier GM AD230 or AD244 alternator from a 4 pin voltage regulator to a 2 pin for use in place of the DR44 on later vehicles.

Can you do the exact opposite of this video? I have the DR44G with the 2 prong plug and I needed the 4 prong.
alternatorman !!! you are the man . i had bought a 300 amp alternator 6 years ago for my 2007 nbs votec max silverado. and just life happened .so i plow with my truck and my batteries finally failed and i fiured since i have the whole truck apart to do the batteries and the bigger power wire for my stereo i installed this would be a great time to install my new high output alternator..when i opened the box and saw the 4 port ad style alternator and i know my truck is the DR style alternator my jaw dropped.i thought i would have to buy a new alternator or stick with my factory 145 amper..finding this video saved my life and alot of coin. thank you so much for your knowledge and experience and for sharing that with us and ME!!
Hahaha similar story here
I was wanting to do the opposite. 2 pin to 4 pin regulator. Thanks for the visuals! I'm amazed this info was out there. You're a good man Randy!

Thank you for this information. What is a good brand regulator? Thanks.
@pinoytat93 Changing from a 4 pin regulator to a 2 pin regulator allows you to use the earlier GM alternator in a later application. I like the AD series alternator (4 pin) better than the 2 pin (DR44G series) The 4 pin AD series alternator has a replaceable bridge rectifier where the DR44G has imbeded diodes, so if the diodes burnout you must replace the whole rear housing, on the AD series you just replace the bridge rectifier. The AD series is best for HO and you can't just change the plug
This can be done in reverse?
Great demonstration, I wish they had youtube 20 years ago when I was working on my cars all the time.
UA-cam has the pontential to advance education to the next level. free education to everyone for life!
The wires are usually Pulse, Light, Field Response, and Sense.
Man your contents are very very academic level , very useful , I have so so many questions that can't be answered just by typing it need a face to face communication .
where did you get the kit to change them 4 pin to 2 pin ???
I currently have a 4 pin 145 amp alternator and would like to put a 160 amp alternator that has a 2 pin connection. Can that be done also?
Check your connection. My Hummer h2 has a 4 pin oval connector but only has two wires going to the center two pins so I'm guessing all you'd have to do is change the plug.
I would be using dielectric grease at the battery regulator to rectifiers connection to prevent any future corrosion, but that’s just 50+ years of a service tech in me, coming out. I know it’s 2020 almost 10 years now since the video was posted, but my question goes to this AD244 four terminal regulator that supplies 0.7 volts to the brake assist pump mounted on the booster. It would be the “D202XHD” regulator sold on your website as this is only an “Alternator Working” signal, as if engine vacuum drops below 10.5 volts, a switch inside the cylinder shaped pump turns on, using ignition #1 amperage to run the pump. This is a family vehicle and my question is this will work. Using a Fluke 87 type 5 DMM.
Thanks. ASE Master Tech since 1978 - Retired (Note, reading taken in an open circuit running/working alternator) with out codes.
Hi I'm not very good at all this alternator stuff but here is what I got a 96 Chevy truck with the cs130D and I want to put the 4pin AD244 on it will it just be a plug and play ???🙁
Do they make an self exciting regulator for this alternator?
Yes they do
Im looking to add a tachometer to a 2000 gm alternator(AD series) . Is there a simple way to to add the w wire to connect the tachometer to?
I just bought a 4 pin alt off line and my car is a 2007 chrysler 300. Which only has 2 pin harness. So how do i get it to work i. The 300?
Thank you sir!
Can I put a 4 pin in place of the 2 pin?
Dr44 is a 4 pin and my DR37 is a 2 pin.
Very very nice explnation
But u did not show pin terminals identfication
And it is better if u attached with schamatic diagram
I would not reassemble the black plastic housing until after I pushed the brush back.
One can move the brush back and use a paper clip to hold it in the retracted position.
Once this is all in place snapping the housing in place is easy.
Unless all alternator openings (vents) are screened over so as to contain any arc flash to prevent any possible ignition of fuel fumes in your boat, it is not advisable to use any automotive alternator in a marine application.
People have burnt their boats making swaps like this.
Im doing a dual alternator setup on a cadillac escalade. Im using one wired up so it can get all the stock signals and I want to do this to the other one. How do I wire up the plug?
@altman - Do you know the range of voltage the regulator expects to see to produce various outputs?
Is it PWM or just straight voltage?
What I'm getting at, basically, is this: If I used an AD244 on a utility engine, for, lets say a small tractor; would I be able to connect a plain battery feed to the VR's expected input and have it regulate voltage properly so as not to overcharge the electrical system?
The AD244 is already a one wire alternator. Only one pin out of the 4 is typically used in automotive applications, which is a battery voltage feed [more often a PCM feed that senses battery voltage and responds].
The other 3 pins have other uses, one of which is a tach feed.
alternatorman, just wanna ask wire color code for 4 pins regulator (AD series alternator) 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th pin connection?
Can you make me one with 300 Amps with the copper sink with 4 pins? I want it for a high performance audio system.
6 washers= they used to call me "tim the shim" ha ha good for you and us...thank-you
you better choke it down or they'll send you fake mail
anyway you can make it so you can have the 4pin and the 2 pin work? lol switching on the fly would be awesome
that alternator does not have an OE rectifier. i need to know an easy method for removing the hot post sleeve from an OE rectifier.
What 2 pin regulator would I use for a 253 amp gm alternator
also this is a TERRIBLE alternator to be putting on a boat.
does anybody know what the mechanism 370a alt is? I know it's not an AD244 or a DR44, WHAT MODEL DO THEY USE? I'm trying to change it from the 2pin to a 4pin so I can use mechmans external digital voltage regulator, I don't want to have to send it in to them to get changed and charge me a bunch and take 2 weeks to get it back.. I also have a 91102R external reg, will that work on the stock 2pin GM alternstors?
Why not just ask them for the parts and a price.
does machine learning have the right to work ? lol
Hi all. what do I need to convert a AD244 for a one wire setup on a boat?
Excellent job explaining conversion. Now I’m heading out to the garage to convert my own. Thanks so much for sharing your experience.
Where you able to convert it?
will this work on the mechman 370a? I just bought a 2 pin for my truck to use right now, then eventually I'd like to switch it to the 4pin so I can add the mechman digital voltage regulator.. I also have the external voltage regulator I might not keep, I may send it back. then just do the 4 pin conversion
and do u sell these parts to convert to the 4pin? I'm very tech savvy, I'm just new to the high output alternator gang, but I'm very interested in all of this, I definitely subscribed to you.. your a very knowledgeable guy it seems..
thanks for the awesome videos
You still see any of these comments..
why 4 pin? And why 2 pin? which is +ve which is ground?
I need a copper heat sink what would it cost me
i know this is a older video but can this be done from a 2 pin to a 4? i have a 300 amp alt from a 05 yukon that i would like to put on my 98 gmc jimmy. everything fits except the jimmy is a 4 pin 1 wire plug and the yukon alt is 2 pin 2 wire plug. is this able to be done?
hi =)
Cuban missile isis 101
how to know bad voltage regulator
this helped me out so much, thank you!!!
If you get a 4 to 2 pin harness would it work right?
No
Goes into limp mode
