- Just a short series of 2 or 3 videos showing the process to tear down and modify your own alternator into a 320amp unit!
If you have any questions or comments, feel free to post in the comments section, as I'd rather have all questions in one place, so I don't have to answer them 10 times.
Happy Bassing!
Part 2, The Modifications, is here!

Thank God. This is why explanation or narration is so important. There is a wealth of knowledge that just will not get imparted on the viewer of its just shown with music and no words. Like how, why what happens if... Etc. Thank you so much. Liked and subscribed.
Fkng outstanding! A lot of these alternator shop people that charge an arm and both legs do this very simple modification😞 Damn good info friend!👍👍
Not realy, problem is even stock alternators can overheat with highload at low RPM like engine ideling, that is not a problem in a normal vehicle.
But for RV that can be an issiu if you want to charge the battery while ideling. You realy need to change the whole alternator or you might get bad luck, get stuck in traffic with a nearly empty RV battery and toast your alternator to death.
Lol❤
Very nice video thankyou for the upload!!!!!
Then you change the pulley size to compensate for the need for higher RPM
Pully is too small as it is.. Thats why the mod is made 👍.
Make sure to remind people not to damage the enamel of the coils when removing the stator assembly, if that enamel gets damaged they get a short and the coil is ruined. Not saying never to remove one the way you did, just remind people not to be brutal about it.
i fr can't believe this video ain't got millions of views
Talk about a cliffhanger! You really had me going. I was sitting on the edge on my chair and then BAM... in the last 15 seconds you say, "that is for another video". Seriously though, great idea. Thanks for posting. Now on to part 2.
that music is driving me fking mad.why people bother putting music into videos better no music so can hear what's said and going on
Boo hoo cry about lol maybe read a book or sub titles if sound bothers you 😜
you make this look easy ,thanks for your time and in return i hit the like for ya, 808 gone now
AHHHHH WHERES THE OTHER VIDEO???? I WANT TO DO THIS. DONT HAVE 600 FOR A 300 AMP ALT
ua-cam.com/video/FikKJLwK1gc/v-deo.html right there :p
Yup, but in a daily driver is not a good idea. Usually drops idle amps on doing this. Pretty annoying sitting at a light at night and your headlights dim only to brighten when hitting the gas as the light turns green.
I've been running a 320amp daily for over 5 years now. If you're not charging at idle, then your pulley ratios are wrong.
But what about the wire section will withstand that current?
Safety squints😑😆
If you could figure out a way to do gm v8 alternator's you could make BIG money man you would be backordered, you should seriously consider this
Agreed
It's a Flux Capacitor! GREAT SCOTT!
A project like this would be nice for building your own car welder :)
Wait did he just draw a flux capacitor?
Damn dude, I cant believe you drug out that cheap cheap China made 3/8" ratchet to use in a video. Let me know if that is the best one you have. I'll mail you a decent one
They also work as a hammer, but only once ;)
If you connect the windings in series, the power is increased at a higher rpm. At lower RPM, especially at idle, the alternator lacks power and at high power demand, the alternator can burn out. For this reason, alternators are not produced in this way.
In other words, it's not spinning fast enough for adequate cooling
At idle, low output = low current = low heat.
good job
I’ve got a “70a” alt factory, it puts out 35a at idle, how high can I push that stock casing?
At 7:25 you said this is where the modification happen... I'm confused, don't you have to change the rectifier as well, for higher amps or resistance as well??? Cuz usually diodes are 40 amps o I'm wrong.?
Can i do this on a denso Dan 1041 alt?
You "are" the Alternator-Whisper! I know lots of stuff.. but I DIDN'T KNOW THAT. Subbed like the S.S. Nautilus. Cheers!
Very good except I'm hung up on something you said... And I could b wrong bug I don't think so but, it seems that with the wye, or star, configuration, the coils are in parallel with each other, while the coils in the delta configuration are in series.. Further evident by the fact that components in parallel with each other typically hold the same properties, I. E. Voltage, while those components will add on to each other when wired in parallel.. With this principle, I can see how changing it from a wye configuration to a delta configuration will net more power. If I'm wrong then i apologize.
Hi I was wondering how can I talk to you about fix my alternator or selling me a alternator for my car
Where would you buy new rectifier?
Or regulator
Do you think that alternator would be enough to power a EcoFlow Delta. Im cooking up a concept to use the standard Alt to power the Classy Delta or Larger electric generator. Thanks for the Vid. Your Know How is greatly appreciated
before and after what is the volt what is the rpm before and after pulley change (pulley size also ) your forgot to show the reading .Thank you bro
The voltage is the same before and after the modifications, about 14.4 volts in this case.
@@TwistTapeTechnology thanks bro
Can you do it on any alternator with the same winding's?
As far as I'm aware, if it has the same stator, and rotor, it can be modified.
Help me out and rebuild mine.!
Can this be done with a 170 amp heavy duty truck alternator
Where do you get a or find a different rectifier to handle the output
Is that drill caming out on those screws or is there an impact feature built in to it to shock the screw?
its an impact driver...
Can you do this to any stock alternators or just this model denso alternator
TwistTapeTechnology do you have a car model list that has this alternator in it ? Just so i could find one at a local junkyard? is the 2013 acura MDX 3.7l v6 alternator ok ? it looks familiar?
Can this only be done with specific alternators? I need a Hi-amp alternator! I would love to know exactly how to do this but with a model that will fit my 1st gen fucus , With so many different alternators, It is mind numbing to think of just how many different alternators there are! I have a 1st gen focus & I have priced both a 160 amp alternator & a 300 amp,,, If I remember correctly, In order to purchase an alternator that produced more then 300 amps, (at least for my car, & from the company's that I have found,) the cost is much greater! $500-600.00... I need to watch all of your video's & absorb all of your info!!!!!! I am hoping that you can assist me in building a Hi-amp alternator that will fit my focus? When I look at different alternators online, I often wonder if one from another vehicle would fit my car because, I have seen some which appear to be of the same design but, They push 30-40 amps more then mine...but, If you can assist me in achieving 300+ amp's, y meddle over 30 or 40 but, an additional 30 or 40 can mean a good bit!!!!
Small case, Denso, Hairpin. They all look the same, as described in this video.
Others can probably be modified, I don't know how.
And this is a wavey washer loool
but how to reprogram car computer? to make sure there are no problems
Sorry, I'm not sure
what was written on your hand at 1:47 if you don't mind me asking ?
JLC PCB, and something else I've forgotten now? haha
Can you tell me what type of alternator is used in a 2008 saturn vue xe 2.4l xe model ??? What is the standard amprage and what can the max be modified to amps size ??? Thanks
using mulitermeter how did you find the alternator amp
I have watched this series a few times and although I dont know much about cars I am good with my hands and enjoy fiddling. I have a Vauxhal Astra H 2010 1.8 Sri. I need to get more power to my car audio system. I have looked at buying an alt but cant find any. The one I have is only 100 amp but can get a 120 amp. Is there any way I can modify it to double the output? Thanks
@best butter I have looked high and low. My Vauxhall Astra has a 100amp alt. I can get a higher 120 amp but that's it specific to my car. Not sure if you can get a 160 from another car and make it fit. I have emailed Mechman and Singer and they don't do Euro car alts. The only options that I think I have are to fit a dual alt so would need to find a mounting kit and longer belt or to modify an alt to put out 200 amp (240 if I can get a second hand 120 amp and modify)
Hi there, I have a 128.5 mm hairpin stator with 6 leads and 3 connections (metro# 27-82018 for pics reference) from an orginal 105A denso alt.
Could you please let me know how could I turn it into a HO stator? Connections differ from the ones in your video and I can't figure it out, although already researched about.
Million thanks in advance for your return on this.
I've dismantled a similar alternator, and while it looks like it can be modified in the same way, I haven't personally tried it, so can't confirm that it will actually work. You might be better off finding another alternator and swapping the stator into your alternator.
Can this be done on a Bosch alternator as well?
Hi there would this also work in the off roading scene when winching where the battery and charging system is under heavy load? And to charge the battery up faster after a long winch pull? Also for what i could tell you used all the parts out the alt and only changed how it was wired? If it would work could you please tell us the part number of the alternator you used thank you
This alternator was for an 05-15 diesel Toyota Hilux.
@@TwistTapeTechnology i have found that 3l range rovers use this alternator 150amp do i need any over parts apart from the alternator?
The flux capacitor!!!!!
Do you know of or plan on uploading a video on how to convert a 110a alternator into high output?
well set out video, informative and clean.
thanks
Can you make a video in rewinding a alternator for a 2017 Nissan Maxima SV. 3.5L? I need at least 300amps for my audio system. Most companies don't make a HO Alternator for my vehicle but one company told me $899.00 + shipping/handling and $89.00 for big 3 upgrade wires
No
Can you upgrade 145 amp alternator?
Is there anywhere in Victoria australia i can take my mazda 3 BL 2.5L Alternator to do this upgrade? If not, can you list the parts needed to do this upgrade?( I.e 4:10 what regulator did you use, also other parts upgrades. ) I will attempt the upgrade on a used alternator 😊
what happened to the wavy washer?
I have an older style alternator from a land rover 88-92 that I want to increase the amp output.
Is this possible?
I hear people saying the alternator needs to be 1990+ because its different tech
You don't do a lcose up of the terminals you clipped and your finger blocked the view. Anyway to get a shot iof what and how much you clipped??
"If you are not sure....????
I'd love to do this with a a Bosch 160 amp alt I just purchased but I've only seen you do it and don't know where to buy the higher Ambridge stator like you were saying where can these things be bought I have a car audio system and l8ve not to have to buy a $600 h/o alternator
My alternator was sparks.
I take it you don't know how to do basic 3 phase math. You don't get double the current form going from a Wye to a Delta configuration. You only get 1.73, in theory. In reality due to over driving your diodes, plus other current carrying circuits in your system, you will be lucky to see a 50% gain in current and with the trade off of likely having your system voltage dropping off badly at idle.
That and with the now theoretical 173% of stock output the odds are your diodes will live rather short lives too.
Not a bad video how to modify a alternator though. well done, but just a bit of math mixup common with working with 3 phase power systems plus solid state devices being overdriven.
This was a 160amp alternator, it now does a measured 320amps.
320 is double 160.... I'll stick with my maths thanks ;)
@@TwistTapeTechnology Just pointing out basic three phase physics of an idealistic system. www.allaboutcircuits.com/textbook/alternating-current/chpt-10/three-phase-y-delta-configurations
Odds are your alternator was capable more than 160 amps to begin with if you managed to double its output just by switching your internal connections from Wye To a Delta configuration. :)
Believe me. I've worked with 3 phase power systems and generators for over 2 decades, and modified enough alternators as well, to know that more often than not you don't get lucky like you did.
Alternator did 160 amps before the mods, 320 after.
Why ? Heat will eventually shorten the life of the alternator.
Ok
I have a Denso TN121000-3760 I want to bump this up to 240a.. it has a 7 grove pulley that I need to go down a size at least, Would you know the best or any place to get a smaller pulley from for this one?
Mine ohms out at 3.4 does this mean it's 90 amp alternator?
Also if I did the same mod as you did to the stator (which looks identical to yours) would it make it 180 ohm mod???
Please 🙏 advise Sr. Thank you!
Joe Silva
Im not sure if I can do this to an Nissan pickup alternator. I have an 95 Nissan pickup XEV6 and I got an extra alternator I'd like to try this instead of buying a 300$ alt. Any tips for me I am pretty mechanical.
Great video! I have a GM AD244 alternator. How do I tell if it’s wound delta or wye?
Hello mr. ! I really want to speak with you ! This process is the same for all 12v alternators?
Which rectifier do you get?
Chi Town Customs Yea big subwoofers and amps need one of these one day
@@lkjyuiop1987 I appreciate all the info, but, you didn't answer my question about the rectifiers.
Is there a way to do this with a 4 wire stator? Trying to figure out how to do this for my 2007 Nissan Murano
Is there a way to upgrade a 100 amp alternator it's from a 2015 Mazda 3
Wish I could understand what he's saying...
i want to do this upgrade to my 2003 eclipse v6 stock is only 85 amp is the process similar ?
I have a 240amp alternator i bought for my 1994 chevy camaro its a 5.7L V8 could it be modified to make even more amps ?
if its a small case hairpin alt like in the video, then its had one half modified to do 240amps, meaning the second half can be modified to do 320amps. It will do slightly less output at idle though as a result.
@@TwistTapeTechnology will a smaller pulley help at idle?
@@Mr.boxxchevy yes it will but if you are redline'ing your car then the alt will be spinning to fast and can come apart and or blow the bearing out of it
@@NightshiftCustom thanks for the input 👍
And for 120A Bosch alternator, any solution ?
What brand is the Alternator and where can it be purchased? Please Advice
I cant find any info on how or where to get a 320 amp rectifier.
ho alt assemblers use rectifiers with twelve, 50amp diodes in their 320amp units.
I have a 180 Amp can it be modified in the same way?
I love all the knowledge but damnit do I hate the sound of cheap ass ratchets. I can gear the slop with each turn lol
How do you modify the alternator that reads 2.2 ohms
Once he started drawing, I knew he was making the " Flux Capacitor" But with out 1.21 gigawatts your not going Back to the Future!!!
..
Ok you have me excited here.
Can this be done to any and all alternators and what will i need?
My current one is about 140amps from a caddi deville 94, 4.7L.
Also how safe is this, don't want to burn up my car lol
Holy shit!! You made a flux capacitor!!! 1.21gigawatts!!!!
Can you do this to a Toyota tundra alternator
I'm fairly sure they're a 130-160amp Denso small case hairpin alt, so this is exactly what you're looking for ;)
THANKS
Do you know if this procedure will work on the newer 180a & 220a hairpin alternators?
Is there any difference between a regular stator and a high output one?
High output alternator "manufacturers" generally just modify the stator, and use the original, unmodified rotor.
Thanks
High output stator (the part of the alternator that stays still) has larger copper windings, thus it can take on more current than a smaller one.
@@OtherDalfite No one makes "high output" stators.
@@TwistTapeTechnology check your previous comment according to you they do. Not like they sell just the remanufactured stator though
Can you do one for a 02 mx5? Do you offer this service?
I don't offer this service, you'd have to find an alternaor that fitted your engine.
What part do I pee on to get the biggest shock?😅
Change from a Wye to Delta configuration.
Hello,,,,i have a 1998 grand cherokee laveredo...ive got a problems...with a battery voltage meter...the pointer os all the way up!....and at a desame time ive got a it says ...check gauges indicator light...what do you think...this kind of trouble shooting....?
Check it with a multimeter, if its really that high, the alternator regulator has probably failed.
How can I convert a Bosch alternator??
How would you do this to a ford 3g alternator. Large case I have been trying to find a. High output stator and the most I can find adds 40 to 50 amps and I need more
I don't know large case sorry.Tear it down and work it out for us! ;)
Woooah... Wait... I think your series and parallel concepts are backwards... Great video, and I was able to glean some great stuff from it, but, am I wrong? Looking at the drawing of the delta configuration, it looks like a series drawing.. Heck, you obviously know what you're doing tho. So really a slip of the tounge, or misinterpretation through semantics, you still showed me something I didn't know and now I do. Keep it up bro. I'm digging it.
I rewatched my video.
Star (or WYE) only has a connection to one end of each winding, with the other ends connected together. So effectively, any current flow has to pass through two windings, which are basically in series with each other.
@@TwistTapeTechnology I see. That makes sense. I was actually thinking about it wrong I think. I was treating it like ond of tgd many diagrams I look at every day where it starts in one place and travels basically till it can't travel any further as per the drawing.. Thinking of it like this, with a rough drawing of the delta configuration, they would b in series with each other. But since my heads screwed on, I see that each end is tapped, and I guess the current doesn't travel through each coil consecutively before going to ground. I'm with ya now lol
My Alternator is off a 1987 Pontiac TA 5.7 GM 1 Wire I thick 108 Amp I’ve already tore it down washed the Stator in vinager , lemon juice & baking soda to remove any oxidation off the stator windings clean inside of the cases , now hoping to be able to do it you’re doing now my alternator ?
no
It will deliver same current.
It delivers twice the current.
Hmm u learn something everyday... Do you do rebuilds?. I have a high output alternator that stopped recharging.. And was wondering it someone could rebuild it to output 320+ amps?. Its made to do 250Amps at the moment.. If you can help me or know someone who can. I'd be grateful for any feedback! Thanks
I'm in Australia, and generally don't do rebuilds. If your alternator looks like what's in the video (internally) then I would assume it could be modified to do 320amps.
can you do this with any alternator? i have a 93 accord and i'm looking for a high output but cant find any that don't need me to modify anything on the car. can i do this to one of my alternators?
nope
Js alternators
Thank you sincerely for making and sharing.
They sell high output alternators, it's pretty freaking important that yours always works, don't mess with factory..you'll be walking
Yes, they modify and sell stock alternator parts to do higher output. That's what this video shows... The same as they sell...
Hello, i own an old car “citroen traction avant” amd is going on 6v but the old dinamo is not enough for the charching process, i wish to modify an alternator from 12v to 6v can you make an video please? Of this modification also? Thanks i need like 80amps from it at 8v thanksss
A standard "12volt" alternator with a different regulator should do what you need. I'm not sure if there are any 6volt internal regulators, so you might have to use an external one.
Can this be done to a 2008 trailblazer ss 6.0l alternator?
And the big case alternators can it do the same?
Does the delta configuration impact voltage? Instead of 13.5 would it drop to 12 v?
trades volts for amps along the rpm curve
I need to rean more about alternator so can you halp me about that
