Hey Mitchell, I enjoy your videos. Training wise I'm not familiar with how it would mesh with what you're currently doing, but it would be incredibly entertaining.
As a d1 shot putter I’d say you got it in the bag but you gotta practice throwing everyday just about. good luck with the swap sport with Joe k cuz the skill/ distance gap between finals and podium is steep, speaking from experience. ❤
Gotta say as a former college shot putter you throwing over that 15yd line with a half turn after just learning it is a damn impressive thing to see. My PR after years of training was 18.33m in college. Im sure you could become a force to be reckoned with if you went with it.
@ i’m not being funny, but it doesn’t look above parallel? I know the camera angle isn’t ideal, but all of his other heavy squats with good angles are legit depth…What have you seen?
Once i had the pleasure to spot Joe Kovacs on Benchpress at my local Gym in Székesfehérvár Hungary in 2023. Joe was here for some shotput event. Even as a Hungarian top 10, 105kg powerlifter i was feeling puny. Joe was block benching for sets with the same weight as my squat worksets at the time like 200kg. It was mind blowing that after i squatted he repped the same weight on bench. That man is a monster. He also had a shotput ball in his gymbag he showed me 😂. Huge respect to both of you guys.
I bet there accturly is a bigger overlap in shotputting to armwrestling then people think, his fingers and elbows are prop mega strong you have to hit him up, u both are very aware of the physics in both sports
@@homeboy3218I don’t really see a correlation. Not that there couldn’t be some as it’s a strength sport but I don’t see any arm wrestlers being world champion shot putters without years of training specifically for that.
Joe did an amazing job coaching. I haven’t thrown a shot since high school and he explained everything better in under 20 minutes than I’ve seen coaches not be able communicate in a whole season.
my high school did not even bother. they had a few of us toss just to see if anyone had talent but no coaching. Our coaches were high school football coaches so am not sure they bother with shotput for the track and field.
I feel like shot putters would be some of the best athletes to cross over to strongman, they would have the best athleticism and they have good static strength
As a former college thrower, this was fun to watch. I could tell Mitch was a real one when we knew that he couldn't pick up shot put technique at a high level in 3 years. That's an athlete who understands what's involved. As Joe pointed out, he's been at it over 20 years and still feels like he's learning. The shot is so finicky because you have so little time to influence the implement and every little millimeter of position and and timing makes a meaningful difference to how far it flies.
I think Mitch would be good at almost any physical feat he put his mind to. He's coachable, does the research to find out what he doesn't know, and applies those lessons in a structured and intelligent way.
Almost all the athletes that are at the top of their chosen discipline could be really good at other sports as well, the determination, ability and perseverance to do something that much that you are the best at it is extraordinary, if Mitch really wanted to and put all his focus on shotputting I'm sure he would be really good, no idea if he ever would actually get to olympics let alone win because his competition would be as determinated and able, but they have started the sport when they were kids so they have way more experience. But I don't think he will quit strongman to chase shotputting so we will never know :)
Watched the video now - very impressive throwing, Mitch - going to the Olympics is a once in a lifetime experience for any athlete- you are only young once. Joe Kovacs is an impressive human being and his wife is his coach.
Damn. Joe Kovacs. The absolute understanding of physics, bio mechanics and the dedication to the sport. What a wonderful, respectful video. Big thanks for sharing! Also, I think you could make the cut to the Olympics.
Like I've said multiple times, this is is the greatest all around strongman of all time. I have no doubt in 2 years he could make the Canadian Olympic Team. Once in a lifetime athlete. Love the videos Mitchell, they help keep my mind off my cancer I was just diagnosed with in May. I went from a healthy 56 year old man working out 6 days a week to pretty much bed ridden for 5 months. I went from a strong 235lbs to a loose skinned 185 lb man. Keep the videos coming people don't understand just 15 minutes of not thinking about it makes your day much better.
Hmm. Mitch is awesome, and well-rounded it's true, but it's hard to give him GOAT status when Big Z's and Pudzianwski's and Shaw's records far exceed his one win, whilst also being very rounded strongmen across all events. In other news, I hope you're holding up okay. Be strong brother.
@hutchmusician I'm speaking all around in terms of different sports. Every sport he tries he's seems to really excel. The guys golf swing is great, he ran marathons etc... Definitely not talking about just strongman events. Yeah he's got a ways to to to even bevtop 5 in that. Thank you!!!!
I was on the track team with joe back in 2008 and he was a freak back then. I remember him as a freshman sprinting the 30M faster than all the sprinters on the team. He also front squatted 5 plates and was easily able to dunk at 6 foot 1.
The javelin seems to require even more explosive power, just not as much strength. It would be interesting to see an emg reading on the same athlete throwing both for comparison.
@@KTtraintowinAnd even then, being lighter athletes with huge wingspans, for example Thorkildsen benched 180 kg with ease, and I've seen Vetter doing pullovers with some ridiculous weights (120-140 kg)

It's pretty same for every sport these days. Everything is so high level that athletes are forced to specialise for one sport to make it to the top. The days of general purpose men are gone. It sucks and it's great at the same time. It's awesome to see the limits pushed by the top atheletes all the time but it would also be fun to see people be top level at multiple disciplines. That's one of the reasons I like to watch heptathlon and decathlon
This video makes it so apparent why Mitch is one of the best strongman going right now. His ability to rapidly adapt to a new movement skillset is incredible! On top of that Mitch has such a great understanding of things he’s able to ask the right questions and adjust accordingly.
