    you can change the gears when not using the throttle. either get their gear change sensor that cuts the throttle when you shift gears or use the brake sensor and add some play in your brake lever, so that the first part of the lever pull acts as a clutch to disengage the motor and allow you to shift the gear(without actually engaging the brake) and use your pedal to complete the shift before releasing the brake lever to engage the throttle again

    BBSHD is the best! Yes, chain line is important, but with spacers, chain line can be gotten in line. I have 2 bikes that I installed a BBSHD on and both run fantastic! Fat bike for me and mountian bike for the wife. We are both 66 years old. Running 52volts on each, BBSHD programmed to 1500 watts. Love it.

    With the PhaseRunner controller other bikers have gotten 2500w out of the BBSHD and use 52V and 72V batteries. Opens up the possibilities to great power output. You have a great bike build.

    I used two hose clamps joined together, one around middle cross section of the bafang and the other around the down tube and the other hose clamp to ensure the bafang doesn't drop... Works really well, extremely sturdy. I take it mountain biking down drops and rocks without any issues. I also put epoxy putty between the bafang and the down tube so there is a larger contact area with the frame and less chance for bafang of denting the frame under high torque. You could probably do this too, your set will become a problem in the long time.

      Why are people so quick to doubt?! He actually said 100km (62 miles) range, at 30 km/h average speed, (which is 18.6mph.). If he's physically fit, and putting in plenty of his own pedal power, not using the throttle, etc, then a 100km range at an average of 30km/h is certainly do-able, on level one or two out of nine, with his battery! If he was just 'ghost pedaling', and not putting much (or any!) effort in, then I'd agree, his range would be far less. But range does depend on lots of different things, like rider fitness and exertion, weight, tyre pressures and type, what sort of terrain (on or off road /hilly or flat), warm or cold weather, headwind / tailwind, etc, etc. I think a young fit bloke could happily get over 60 miles out of that particular bafang battery & motor set-up, at 18.6mph, as long as he put the effort in. Either way, it's a great motor, and I hope to build a hybrid bike with one in time for the English 'summer' :)

    rim brakes are ok for road use if maintained...but a pain if there is mud. Have you tried a bafang middrive with a nuvinci 360 rear hub? One chainline, shifting seamlessly standing still or moving....constant power transmission to rear wheel, without clunky gear changes....the two go together like peanut butter and jelly. I think you would be amazed with the performance. One of my favorite builds was like this. I used a nuvinci 360 with the auto shift module. It senses wheel speed and shifts the hub automatically as speed increases. You select your favorite pedalling cadence. With the middrive, it works the same, except better. Torque is phenominal, because it is always in the lowest ratio when at standstill. Battery life extended as well, because you avoid the high amperage on starts. I only run a 48 volt 10 amp/hr lion battery...and it lasts for hours of any terrain I throw at it. cheers!

    • @eBikeaholic
      @eBikeaholic  5 років тому

      Yeah I really want to try the nuvinci harmony auto shift it sounds amazing. I'm hesitant though how well it will hold up to high power - over 1000w. How many amps do you pump to the nuvinci?

    • @jimhofoss9982
      @jimhofoss9982 5 років тому +1

      eBikeaholic hi, I use a 750 watt bafang mid drive @48 volts. Put a smaller than stock sprocket on the bafang to add some more grunt on the hills. It will throw you off the back of the bike before it quits turning, no hill too steep! No hickups with the nuvinci 360, or the shifting interface after putting it thru intense riding up mountain trails, climbed to the top of Mount Reesor...35% grades, over 2500 ft elevation change! 2.6” tire on back for good traction. If that isn’t a good stress test on nuvinci, I don’t what is....I believe it would stand up to 1000 watts, tho recommended for 750 watt or less. I know they have a newer nuvinci380, bigger spread on the ratios, but unsure of all the specs. All I know, is that bafang and nuvinci work VERY well together. The single chainline is priceless, simple, no bent derailleurs. Try it, you’ll like it!

  • @TimpBizkit
    @TimpBizkit 4 роки тому +1

    I got the 52 tooth sprocket but not sure if it's too big. I wanted to be able to take advantage of extra speed downhill, the fact that I can add pedal power (up to a further 750 watts or more on a sprint) and in cyclist kit. I have a 28/12 cassette on the back with the 750 watt motor. I can always pedal and help the motor out a bit on a steep hill, or upgrade the cassette to 34/11 if it turns out to be a problem. I just don't want to bog down the motor, but the amount of really steep hills near me is slim.
    To be fair legs + motor I don't think I'll have trouble with a 52/28 gear. You cease to need the low gears unless the battery runs out on the bike! If I end up in the alps I can get a 44/34 haha.
    One thing that is worth noting: petrol engines are more efficient at converting fuel into power when you can give them plenty of load. Electric motors are better with a relatively light load and not struggling to turn.

    • @eBikeaholic
      @eBikeaholic  4 роки тому

      Truth. I ran the Bafang Ultra (1500w) with a 60T/17T single speed setup for a while and it ate hills for breakfast, the BBSHD should be fine 52T/28T.

  • @Floydarn
    @Floydarn 6 років тому +3

    I just got me a BBSHD, id say it's important to grease that up with the recommended mobilgrease or aeroshell 22 on all cogs rightaway, just remove whatever is there now! And when you put it together, make sure not to use any kind of sealant, just put it together again, I tried using silicone and sealing the thin connector with many pins on it and got an error since it got gunked up and it sucked fixing that...
    Then put some good silicone on the outside of the engine, wherever water can get in and you're set!
    I got a fatbike with a big frame battery and I commute 40km daily using full throttle a whole lot and charging it to 90% since that's recommended if you want the batteries to last as long as possible. When I get home there's about 30% left. With normal bike tyres and driving fast instead of real fast I'm sure there would be about 60% left after my 40km of daily travelling.

It's only a $200 dollar difference and when you're spending over $1200 for that whole kit, $200 shouldn't stop you from getting this beast. It's illegal to have a 1000w where I live, but they pay absolutely no attention to that around here. Cops in this country bumpkin county has probably never even heard of an Ebike.

    The samsung and panasonic battery packs are popular.
    I would imagine the banfang mid-drives will be popular in Australia as we have limited off the shelf options.
    The new M625 kits in 750W and 1000Watt are very professional looking kits and very easy to install...
    The only issues on the old style kits seem to be if the motor starts tilting...
    Also hydraulic brake levers with the built in sensors would be nice...

      Thanks for the tip Michael, I haven't tried it yet. The last I checked it's very difficult to get a straight belt line with the BBSHD. I've seen a forum thread where someone was able to make a custom pulley to fit a belt drive to the BBS02, but the larger BBSHD has a very tight tolerance for an offset pulley. Rohloff is the only igh that provides a close offset but it's still questionable depending on the frame geometry. California ebike has a good write-up on it but I'll do some more research and maybe give it a try. california-ebike.com/thinking-adding-bafang-mid-drive-belt-drive-bike/ . The frame would also need to be belt drive compatible or modified to allow the belt through the chain stay. If you've seen any posts or videos of a successful BBSHD belt drive build, please share!

    Correction the BBSHD cannot do 24V or 36V battery. The voltage cutoff (minimum you can make it) inside the controller settings is 39V. a 36V fully charged battery is 42V. In theory it will work with the 36V but only until you hit the 39V cut off. 24V is out of the question. Please do not tell people wrong things... Then again it's your channel do what you want...

In the UK we're supposed to be limited to (I think) 15-16 mph from motor assist, but I can't be doing with any of that nonsense. Cool vid. I have a bunch of Sixthreezero Evryjourney bikes I'm making electric. Almost the same bike, but with much more forward peddling. You may want to check one out for your lower back pain.
    So far I've installed two different Tongsheng TSDZ2 500W mid drive motors on them to make a his and hers pair. Eventually I'll be putting the BBS02B and a HD on them. So far I've been using those motors on a more sporty style beach cruiser model (Sixthreezero In The Barrel) for my personal daily ride to and from work at the bike shop, and need to get my 2000W and 3000W Cyclone motors adapted to those same model bikes before I do any more with the EVRYjourney's. I'm also waiting for the three speed EVRYjourneys to come out. I like how the BBS02 and HD work much better with the Shimano Nexus 3 speeds than with a 7-Speed setup. With the Nexus IGH, they are twice as fun to ride.
    I'm also planning to offer the EVRYjourney's with 500W Bafang and 800W Q128H rear hub motors.

      I no longer have the bike from this video, but it depends on the gearing and power level. This bike with 7 speed, 1000w bbshd I mostly used the PAS then just hit the throttle to clear intersections and whatnot. My latest build is the Bafang ultra 1500w. It started as single speed which only gave about 5 pedal revolutions until I was just ghost pedaling. It now has a Nexus 3 speed IGH with 56T/16T gearing which gives a good balance of low-end torque but still allows my legs to contribute to the power at cruising speed.

      Laurie Allan there are different chainrings that can bolt onto the bbshd, however they are specifically designed for the bafang mid motors due to the offset chainline. Luna cycle sells a few options. I had to use the oem bafang chainring to keep a straight chain line. Also consider your gearing since the motor might overpower your legs in the highest gear causing you to ghost pedal at top speed. I like to use the sheldon brown gain ratio calculator for that.
